If you would use the PS3 to play games, then it is probably a great value for you. Look at the PS3 as $200 for a Blu-ray player and $200 for an HD game system. Since you're looking at a standalone model at Costco, the Panasonic BD35 Costco has for $199.99 is a better deal right now. The BD35 and the Sony standalone you're looking at are roughly equivalent models. Both will likely be quieter than the PS3. The PS3 can have some fan noise depending on the luck of the draw. The PS3 will be faster in most operations than either of those 2 standalone players. There are a few audio differences between the PS3 and the 2 standalones that may or may not be an issue depending on the receiver you plan to use (if you use an A/V receiver). All three are great choices depending on your needs/wants and/or budget.

There are many advantages to the PS3 as Jim pointed out. I think if you will use it for gaming at all, it's a no-brainer.

Haha.
I'd personally go with a Playstation 3 because not only can it play BRD (Blue Ray DVD) but because it is a killer media hub (does streaming, plays x264 with some minor modification). As a gamer I've been a bit disappointed by it, as a media enthusiast I've loved it.
That said, the PS3 is a little louder and a bigger power hog than standalone Blu Players, and can't be turned on by universal remote. Standalones can also be had for substantially lower prices and are a bit more to the point... There's a sale going on at Amazon.com where you get $100 off a BD Player w/ the purchase of 4 WB Blus, so quite a few folks have been getting the Samsung BD-P1500 for around $175 w/ 4 movies ($101 for the player, $74 for the movies, after rebate).

Since you mention that you have a PS2, keep in mind that none of the current PS3 models will play PS2 games.
You might not care, but want to make sure you're aware of that up-front.

I'm not a gamer at all, but I bought the PS3 because it was the only 2.0 profile player at that time, and it was cheap at $300 through the SonyStyle deal.
Since then, I have learned it can do a great deal more than play Blu-ray. If you have a home network set up, you can stream content from your computer right to the PS3...no more messy burning DVD-Rs. As a Blu-ray player, it can be considered a "reference" player; great PQ/AQ and pretty good upscaling to 1080p.
The only thing is, if you need 5.1/7.1 analog outs, you should look at another player.

many movies are shot in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, widescreen tvs are 1.77:1 which is what hd tv shows are shot at. as such, you get bars on the wider movies, even on widescreen tvs since the tv isn't cinema scope wide. you can zoom in to fill that space, though you'll be losing some picture on the sides.
If your tv has a qam tuner, it van get some hd over the cable line.

In nearly all cases you'll need a cable box for any HD channel that you have to order. If you plug the cable directly into your TV and use the QAM tuner you may get the local broadcast HD channels, depending on your cable system. They're not supposed to encrypt those, but some do. They won't show up with the same number as your cable guide has. For example, CBS HD may be on 708 through your cable box, but you may find it at 8.1 or 103.8 (just an example) with your QAM tuner.
