Maybe the view is clouded from where you seem to be watching. From 6 to 9% in market share during the summer sales in Q4 have been on the rise:

Who'd a thought that The Incredible Hulk would sell so well? We sure didn't, as we predicted sales to be down more than 1.26 percent, on this week's Nielsen VideoScan chart courtesy of Home Media Magazine. Thanks to the Hulk, Blu-ray managed to net $17.71 million this week, which makes October the biggest month in history. In fact, consumers spent $76.86 million in October alone, which is more than all of August and September combined -- it will be very interesting to see if Blu-ray can keep this up through the last two months of the year though. For whatever reason the green monster was a hotter seller on Blu-ray than DVD, as it outsold Indiana by about 4:1, which is about twice as much as the DVD version managed against the same competition. This showed up on the Blu-ray title share chart, as the Hulk stole over 18 percent away from its DVD version, which to our memory is the best of any day-and-date title ever. The fun is over next week though, as there are only so many comic book movies around, and the next one isn't due for about a month. But when the latest Batman does hit the shelves, watch out, as it should easily outsell every Blu-ray title to date including the mighty Iron Man
Furthermore, we are on track to have at least 2 million $ sellers come January 1. Also, I would say that with current numbers for specific titles showing well over 10 % percentage share in relation to DVD we are in for a lot of first ever in regard to Blu-ray sales. Do you disagree?

Then we can tally the results (in percentages, mind you) and use them to establish once and for all the true viability of the Blu-ray format!

Thats great, lets make Blu Ray the format for comic book movies!! Yippeee, maybe once they establish a market share for comic book movies, we will finally be able to get Masters of the Universe on Blu Ray!

And they're now expected to either hook up their Blu-ray players to the internet and update their firmware, or even worse download it to CD and then do it manually.

I have a Blu-ray player, and I love it...I'm just really worried about it being too much for the masses. I'd be happy if they made it so that enthusiasts could update firmware to get better features (since we're putting the extra work into it), but it shouldn't be required to simply play a movie.

If you haven't noticed, comic book movies sell well on dvd as well. So should dvd also be called the lower resolution comic book format?

Is that the Blu-ray equivalent of somebody yelling "we won!" after a game when they had nothing to do with it?

So you're saying that anyone who buys BD's has nothing to do with contributing to the advancement of the format?

Not in the least, the quote was "Furthermore, we are on track to have at least 2 million $ sellers come January 1."

I bought Iron Man, Incredible Hulk and will buy Dark Knight the morning it's released.. but I'm not seeing any of that scratch. That's all the studios and the BDA making that money.

EDIT: Oh, and I also bought Zombie Strippers, too.

I own a bunch of HD-DVDs but never bought into BluRay and have no plans to do so.

I think you are misinterpreting the quote there. If you are a supporter of the format, you are happy that these discs are selling more and more, because you actually invested in something beyond a $200-$500 paperweight and many coasters to go around that lovely centerpiece.

Pro-B is enthusiastic about the future with two movies both breaking 1 million discs sold in the near future, saying "we" as format supporters are going to see BD records being broken in the very near future.

Then you sir, are a large part of why October was such a great month for BD sales. I personally bought roughly 18-20 in the last 30 myself.

You disagree I take it? TDK will destroy that 1 million mark IMO. I won't be surprised if Iron Man beats it, but if not it will be soon after. I go into my local Wal-Mart (city of 12,000, rural) and there are two slots dedicated to the Iron Man BD, every time i go there it is packed full, then two days later, almost empty and two days beyond that, they are completely empty. This movie sells like crazy and i'm loving it.

I guess I wasn't informed that Transsiberian needed to sell just as many as Iron Man or even the Bond movies to be considered viable.

Every format is going to or has put out movies people rarely buy.. You should know, you bought Zombie Strippers.

I haven't seen the point of buying the same amount of discs in BD (or HD DVD) as I did in the past with DVDs. The prices are simply much, much higher. I think 80-90% of my purchases were during DDD sales, first week sales, or once the title had reached the sub-$10 bin. Not many movies are worth $20, let alone the $25 to $40 you sometimes see at Best Buy, etc. I mean, give me a fucking break. Remember the Titans for $30? Best Buy is one of the main B&M stores where most people who are coming into the format are going to be seeing the selection and prices.

The economy certainly isn't helping, and if anything will make sure DVD retains its popularity as it is super-cheap right now.

And no matter the Blu-ray, it doesn't and can never compare to a great theater experience.

I just want lower software prices. Catalog titles should carry a max $20 MSRP unless it's something like Blade Runner where there's more than two discs.

It doesn't, but I'm not going to declare that Blu-ray is dead because a movie that nobody is expecting to do well, doesn't do well. Just like I'm not going to believe in 2 years that Blu-ray will overtake DVD, because a Blu-ray that everyone expected to sell well, actually sells well.

This thread isn't about Blu-ray taking over DVD, it's about whether it's dead or not. All formats thrive on those large sellers, and the more they have that appeal to the consumer, the longer studios, the BDA and stores will consider the format viable, hopefully eventually cementing it in places as a niche format at the minimum.

On release week? Doubtful. Iron Man sold 500k and TDK might hit 750k. I can't see it being a 1 Million week for it. Maybe a week or two after, sure. (My opinion of course). December is a busy month for people and with the Holidays + poor economy they may spend on other people first before thinking of themselves.

Iron Man and TDK will be 1 Million sellers by January for sure. But we can't count on two titles to carry the format either. After TDK we don't have very many big titles announced.

That's a good point. There's been a big run-up lately due to Iron Man, Hulk, and KOCS.

TDK will be a monster, as everyone expects, but other than that, there's only Wall*E, and maybe KFP that will show any legs.
