Beyond the Lights (2014)

Really liked this movie a lot. Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker were really good in their respective roles and there was a pretty decent supporting cast. Really dealt with how fake the music industry can be and how 2 total opposites can overcome that and fall in love. Had some really sweet moments. A total chick flick and I have a soft spot for movies like this.

Nate Parker kind of reminded me of a young Denzel Washington. Not necessarily the looks, but he has the charm.

I'd give this movie a solid B

The Homesman. Got sucked into that one by a pretty good cast. OK movie but seemed more of a (Producer) Tommy Lee Jones labor of love.

Nightcrawler (2014)

Really awesome and dark movie. Gyllenhaal was super creepy. Part of it felt like I was watching a snuff film. Rene Russo was also really good as the news director.

I personally don't think this movie is worth owning, so I won't purchase it because IMO it really has no replay value. But it was definitely without a doubt worth seeing at least once. When this appears on cable later this year I might watch it again if it happens to be on.

My thoughts exactly. Crazy good performance from Gyllenhaal. When it was done I was impressed at the performance but didn't feel particularly entertained. Glad I saw it, no need to see it again

Lolita (1962) This film can't be recognized by Kubrick's style.

I bought Nightcrawler but have not watched it yet. Saving it for a rainy day which means in CA it will never happen.

Whiplash

It was good but I would not buy it or watch it again unless it appeared 10 years from now and I had the urge to revisit it.

The Humbling

Al Pacino mumbles his way through this uneven film about an older male actor getting into a relationship with a far younger lesbian.

It is. It's one of my most valued imports. This version has been OOP for several years already and commands a high price on the secondary market.

Can't say I wasn't entertained but holy shit was that thing crazy. I think you'd have to watch that thing 10 times to get the nuances. I had trouble following the recordings he was making for himself.

I remember the 1996 Showtime remake with Jeremy Irons and Dominique Swain.

Predestination was a trip. I am not sure if I understood what happened but if what I think was suppose to happen at the end somebody might say I was wrong. Some guys from Australia made that movie and they must be smoking something funny down there lol.

The Last of Robin Hood.

Is it me or was Dakota Fanning a better actress when she was younger?

It seems wooden performances are her specialty now.
