Between the visuals, the characters, the themes, the performances, the craft tying them all together, along with the taste exercised in the storytelling, I'm easily reminded of why for so long I've considered these two my favorite films of all time. Great to see these again after so many releases that left so much to be desired.
An imperfect, but perfectly serviceable presentation that is still a HUGE upgrade over the anamorphic flipper release from 7 years back- and at $16 from Amazon, easily the steal of the year so far.



Slickly mounted Ross Hunter production is slightly dated (as to be expected), but less than most people would think. Especially after years of parodies and low rent sequels and rip offs. The big daddy of the all-star disaster movie is still enormously entertaining, juggling it's disparate subplots, and tension, pathos, and comic relief all with ease. Even when it's hokey it's still fun to watch.
Watching it again this time I was struck with how well it uses the 2.35 AR. Perfect entertainment for the next 'historic' snowstorm.
One of the rare A/V winners from notoriously unreliable Universal.



First ever viewing. Was surprised how much I enjoyed it. The lions share of that was due to Sellers. Wasn't sure I was going to be up for 100 minutes of an East Indian impression, but the character here is a complete charmer. The only real false note is Steve Franken's drunken waiter bit, which like the slapstick complications late in the film becomes too protracted, predictable, and flat out stupid- which is always a danger with Blake Edwards and his love-is-blind affection for slapstick.
Still an overall winner, with a beautifully delicate and understated ending.

Impressive production values, with what I am sure is some seamless CG, conveying Victorian London in spectacular detail. Not quite into the vibe of the series yet. It's looking a lot like another 'League of Public Domain Characters'. I will probably confine it to a couple eps at the end of each week rather than binge watch it.

I'll missed watching TV shows on Blu-ray when studios begin to stick to DVD releases only as the PQ and AQ cannot be matched by DVD and streaming when they are encoded properly.

I usually prefer Blu ray however for TV shows, DVD's are more convenient. I like to bring season sets with me on business trips. It is a great opportunity to binge watch and I can watch DVD's on the laptop.

I bought Chuck on BR and the quality is only marginally better if at all. Should have stuck with the SD

The audio is fantastic as well. My only issue was a minor quibble with off-screen dialogue. It tended to have a slightly muffled quality that resembled radio chatter. Not staticy or hissy but it didn't sound natural and kept taking me out of the moment. For instance, when the guys are riding on the tank early on (the scene when Jon Bernthal messes with Shia LaBeouf's moustache), whenever the camera switches away from Bernthal and LaBeouf, their voices sound slightly off. Same for when Jason Isaac's first appearance. Listen to his voice (which starts out to the front right) until it ends up anchored in the center (when he is finally on-screen). There's a world of difference from one to the other. At first he sounds like a voice on a radio and then all of a sudden he has a natural quality to his voice. I've heard plenty of movies that employ such panning and steering of audio but there's usually a uniformity to the sound quality of the voices, unlike this movie.

I have the Chuck season sets and I think the reason was the way it was filmed plus there's no lossless sound too. But then you have TV shows like Arrow, The Dick Van Dyke Show and the Twilight Zone on Blu that are absolutely phenomenal in both PQ and AQ. Heck even a comedy like The Big Bang Theory with the lossless sound is superior on Blu. When I travel, I use the digital copies found on the combo sets. However not all TV shows comes with the digital copy.

I have cut down on my Blu-ray and DVD spending a lot since last year. Streaming is a big reason why and I'm okay with it, even with the lower quality specially for TV shows. However, I purchased Arrow S1 on Blu-ray when it was on sale this past Christmas because I loved it when I watched it on Netflix. Watching this set made me see the improvement of the Blu-ray compared to streaming and thus why I commented about it.

I have a crappy sound system anyway, I just run SRS through my HDMI, so it's pretty difficult for me to judge the audio on anything. DCP I saw at the cinema look gorgeous though. Apparently a 2K DI from a 35mm anamorphic film prints. Wonderfully gritty and grimy.
