A Great double feature night

First up- the 1.85 AR version of

Spoiler:
Like the '56 and '78 versions of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, this is a rare case where I appreciate all the thoughtful alterations and enjoy alternating viewing every few years with the original (which is one of my top 3 Film noirs).
Ironically, Don Siegel was the director of the original Invasion and also the director of this divergent take on the very embryonic Hemingway short story. Lee Marvin, Clu Gulager, John Cassavetes, Angie Dickinson and a vicious as hell Ronald Reagan among others. Even today, the mean spirited tone of some of the scenes is startling.
Spectacular looking disc that is color saturated in the way all those mid to late 60's TV productions were. A real eye popper.

then

Spoiler:
Lovely low key thriller with a baby faced William Hurt playing the likable, love struck schmuck who tries to leverage information he doesn't really have of a murder to get close to a TV reporter (Weaver) he's long been infatuated with.

I used to have some quibbles about the third act and the identity and motivation of the killer. But watching it last night I realized how tightly constructed it all is. Some of the relationships are convenient, but the script goes to lengths to justify them and the motivations all around are logical and supported. It's a character piece as much as anything, and everyone is well delineated- even down to the minor supporting ones.

Another under the radar charmer from Steve Tesich and Peter Yates, who two years earlier did Breaking Away.

Strong effort from Signal One. Solid A/V plus a modest selection of bonus features. I recently sold off the AB DVD which I remember looking fine. Probably not a huge upgrade, but I'm happy to have a finer copy of it nonetheless.
I'm guessing Twilight Time will eventually kick this one out in the States.

I picked up a copy for a dollar at one of the Blockbuster closings a few years back. It's generally forgotten, though the Guy Ritchie film has brought it to mind. It's interesting that so many filmmakers over the years have told this story and every one of them changes it so much. It's much the same with Robin Hood.

Spoiler:
The kind of inane, youth pandering movie I turned my nose up to back in the day.
Viewed 30 years later, through nostalgia tinted lenses, it's an adolescent resistance fantasy whose inanities seem more charming than insulting now. And it really makes me melancholy that Helen Slater never had more opportunities to headline back in her prime. Fun to see Keith Gordon get a chance to be a romantic lead at least once, though.

I definitely enjoyed it more than the feature that proceeded it (The Hearse on dvd)

It is not that bad and not the worst movie in the world and maybe a decent rental.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

La La Land. I thought it would be boring and not into musicals but it was alright. Kind of sad after all the singing and dancing how it turned out in the end. Maybe it is one of those movies you can watch the music sequences again but not the full 2 hrs and 7 minutes.

A Bronx Tale

Still don't understand how this is not available in the U.S. on Blu-ray especially since they did a musical or broadway play based on the source material.

Excellent movie and still holds up after all these years.

Rogue One. Been sitting on the Bluray since release date and finally made the time to watch tonight with the wife.

It still feels like a slow burn to get going, but hot damn that last third is just amazing.

The Fast and the Furious- still one of the most entertaining action flicks
The Shining-honestly once Jack goes nuts the movie IMO isn't as good as the first hour or so

I remember seeing that in the theater or maybe the drive-in with my brand new girlfriend. Always thought this was over-rated. Will admit to not being a big fan of horror. There were a few that I liked (like The Changeling) but all in all not my favorite genre. Thought this was kind of stupid. That whole now infamous "Here's Johnny" line seemed completely out of place and elicited a laugh in a place where there shouldn't have been one.

The Girl with All the Gifts...what a fresh take on the zombie genre. Creepy and scary and different, but definitely elements from other zombie movies. Day of the Dead certainly. Really good stuff and I love Gemma.

Expendables 1 Got this bare bones 3 pack this week. Forgot how much fun this was with all the cartoon fighting and different names on screen. Beautiful picture and great sound.

Spoiler:
Entertaining sic-fi/horror hybrid with an appealing cast and good chemistry between leads Cushing, Ed Judd, and Carole Grey. Cancer researchers on an isolated coastal island inadvertently create organisms that feed on calcium (the bones in living animals), and which multiply at an exponential rate.
Sure, the rubber monsters look a little hokey, but the premise is approached fairly intelligently.

Absolutely blown away by this movie. Loved it. Apparently pretty close to history however in the extras they said Kevin Costner's character was a composite of 3 people. Although I was a child of the 60's I was too young to remember the segregation of 61.

Don't usually collect many dramas but this one is too good not to own. Those sets looked so much like what I remember from my childhood. All that olive green and gold.
