Hmm, is this the first Blu-ray double-dip? I think it is! Casino Royale is being re-released on Blu-ray, finally using BD-Live — like “Taking full advantage of the interactive capabilities offered by advanced Blu-ray technology, Casino Royale Collector’s Edition also offers exclusive material found only on the Blu-ray version: a Bonus View picture-in-picture visual commentary with Director Martin Campbell and Producer Michael G. Wilson, as well as “Know Your Double-O,” a BD-Live enabled multi-skill level, multi-player trivia game that pits Bond fans around the world against one another in a game that will entertain both casual fans and experts alike. “

Here’s the full news:

The most successful James Bond movie ever gets a first-class upgrade when Casino Royale Collector’s Edition arrives on DVD and Blu-ray™ High-Def October 21, 2008. Daniel Craig (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Munich) transforms himself into the urbane and sophisticated Agent 007 for this adrenaline-filled adaptation of Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel. Audiences revel in the heart-stopping action of Bond’s initial assignment with his license to kill. A box office smash and home entertainment chart-topper, the Collector’s Edition of Casino Royale offers a “Double-O” dose of extra features, plus free e-Movie Cash to see the next Bond installment, Quantum of Solace, in theaters November 7, 2008.

Craig and leading lady Eva Green (Kingdom of Heaven, The Dreamers) breathe new life into the Bond saga, as director Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, The Legend of Zorro) captures all their sizzling chemistry on film. The complex action-thriller also stars Oscar® winner[1] and six-time Academy

Award® nominee[2] Judi Dench (Die Another Day, Shakespeare In Love), who returns to the Bond franchise as “M”, 007’s steely superior at the British Secret Service, and veteran actor Mads Mikkelsen (Exit, Prague), as Le Chiffre, the devious mastermind behind a terrorist banking scheme. The film also introduces the audience to former Miss Italy finalist Caterina Murino, making her steamy American film debut as one of the latest Bond Girls.

Casino Royale Collector’s Edition is bursting with over seven hours of spectacular extras not featured in the original DVD and Blu-ray release, including new documentaries, never-before-seen footage and in-depth profiles of the filmmakers. Taking full advantage of the interactive capabilities offered by advanced Blu-ray technology, Casino Royale Collector’s Edition also offers exclusive material found only on the Blu-ray version: a Bonus View picture-in-picture visual commentary with Director Martin Campbell and Producer Michael G. Wilson, as well as “Know Your Double-O,” a BD-Live enabled multi-skill level, multi-player trivia game that pits Bond fans around the world against one another in a game that will entertain both casual fans and experts alike. This can’t-miss deluxe edition will be available October 21 on 3-disc DVD at a SRP of $29.95 and 2-disc BD at a SRP of $38.96.

Casino Royale Synopsis:

Casino Royale introduces James Bond (Craig) in “00” status. “M” (Dench), head of the British Secret Service, sends Bond on his first mission as 007, leading him to Le Chiffre (Mikkelsen), banker to the world’s terrorists. In order to bring down the terrorist network, Bond must beat Le Chiffre in a high-stakes poker game at Casino Royale. Bond teams with a beautiful treasury official, Vesper Lynd (Green), as he risks millions of Her Majesty’s money, all too aware that should he lose, the funds will strengthen and embolden the very terrorists they hope to stop. As Bond and Vesper survive a series of nearly lethal attacks by Le Chiffre and his henchmen, a mutual affection develops, leading Bond to a terrifying confrontation with his own mortality. As Bond becomes closer to Vesper, he questions his desire to remain a secret agent, leading to a heart-stopping conclusion unlike any Bond film before.

I ordered the 3-pack that contains FRWL and Thunderball from Amazon. A day or 2 later the 3-pack with Die Another Day, etc showed up in my Amazon Gold Box for $59.80. So, on a hunch I cancelled the first order and ordered the DAD 3-pack (which I didn't want). The next day the FRWL/Thunderball 3-pack showed up in my Gold Box for $59.80. So if you want to save a few bucks, it might be worth a try to order one and then start checking your Gold Box the next day.

The new BD would have to offer a pretty hefty A/V upgrade for me to switch. I barely watched the special features on the first release as it is.

So, I was surfing around the Blu-ray titles at http://www.nulime.com and came across the Bond titles and noticed that the artwork they had looked a little bit like steelbooks. Is this what is going to come out? If so, I need a fresh change of underpants.

The pictures of the Bond Blu-rays at foxstore.com are very small, but best as I can tell they look the same as the ones at nulime. I would love it if those were steelbooks.

To be honest, I really wasn't considering getting these, but if they come in Steelbook packaging, I might just give them a second look.

Fox are fans of steelbook packaging. I can't think of a better way to introduce BD steelbooks in the US.

Buy.com has the same photos for the Bond singles. Is anyone here expert enough to definitively say those pictures are of steelbooks?

The images look like Steelbooks. However those are not photos. They could just be temp art pasted onto the wrong Photoshop template. I wouldn't count on these really being Steelbooks until the studio announces one way or another.

Two different posters over at highdefdigest have said that the Bond steelbooks will be exclusive to Best Buy.

Steelbooks? Ouch. I just got punched in the wallet.

Note to Fox: If you're going to start this, you'd better go all the way. I'll be pissed if I pick these steelbooks up and then the others don't follow.

since i'm not a fan of those cover art images, being on a steelbook doesn't make them any more compelling to me. if they had exclusive cover art on the steelbooks that looked better, then i'd consider them.

Good call. If I buy these, and the next batch are regular cases, I will be pretty angry.

Why is so important to get a movie in a steelbook case? If Fox releases the Blu-Rays with VHS quality but on a Steelbook case, people will still buy them? I mean, isn't buying a movie the reason of buying a movie, not a case?

u have a point but this is after all a forum for DVDs and to many people here, the packaging matters.

Yeah, I was responding to the post above that said HDF users said they were BB exclusives but I don't think that came across.

Oh, of course not, and nobody here implied such a thing. But all things being equal, who wouldn't want a limited-edition Steelbook over a regular plastic one?
