HDMI from HD-A1 straight to Projector?

Okay, so I've had my HD-A1 for a few months, and have had it hooked straight into my Panasonic projector via HDMI to HDMI/DVI adapter ever since. The cable and adapter are from Bettercables, and I've calibrated the whole setup using Digital Video Essentials (the DVD version -- haven't had the chance to upgrade yet). Anyhow, this evening, I was experiencing some "HDMI ERROR" issues (as is wont to happen when your HDMI/DVI adapter isn't securely fastened into place . . .), when I decided I was going to try hooking the HD-DVD player first through my receiver (also Panasonic) with the HDMI cable that came with the player, and then from the receiver into the projector. Well. I was most interested to find that the picture was, of all things, a lot brighter. I didn't have time to try recalibrating, but -- what the heck?? I truly think the optimal setup would be from the A1 to the projector, but I'm really surprised by the difference . . .
