Sound & Vision interview of Mark Cuban

Decent article. What was very interesting was his take on Blu-ray vs. HD DVD. He said, "They could be surpassed very quickly by new optical technology or hard drives. If prices fall fast enough, it's over."

I have followed the optical disc he is talking about and it looks amazing. Looks mainly like a CD/DVD but has a holographic layer, and it holds 1 terabyte of information, which is leaps and bounds ahead of either BR or HD.

Here is the developer. http://www.optware.co.jp/english/what_040823.htm They mainly seem to be going for the data backup market, but markets tend to find a way to use the best things available.

It got me to thinking about the Sega Dreamcast. And I can see how it could happen that BR and HD share that fate. You have a better PQ that many people won't see the huge leap in. You have a format war that will confuse J6P. With all the possible things that could stifle this next leap, it seems very possible that it will never get enough of a foothold by the time a far better technology is introduced.

Just food for thought. Personally, the idea of a 1 terabyte disc is freaking amazing. Hell, it's overkill for the most part. But imagine the possibilities, and imagine needing no compression of the movies, extras, etc.

I wouldn't count on Holo discs replacing optical media anytime soon. Maybe for 4K resolution stuff someday but not for 1080p HD. It's overkill at 100+ dollars a disc.

That's why Cuban said "if prices fall fast enough."

Obviously these discs will be no threat for a few years at least. But if the format war (or general consumer apathy) keeps HD-DVD or blu ray from being more than a Niche market item for 5 or more years, then you could see these (or another format) come out and overwhelm them in the future.

I don't think that's super likely, but it certainly a possibility as I'm not convinced Joe Six Pack will snap of HD or Blu Ray players or discs very quickly.

That's where I sit as well.
