Pesky mod accepts blame and closes this split-off thread temporarily while sorting out some of the behind-the-scenes flak.
To avoid further potential embarrassment, discord or whatever it is we have witnessed here, there'll be no further other-member-referencing name changes.
My thanks to all here who have eloquently made their points on behalf of the members at large.

And on Vibiana's name change, I can only offer this. It's not so much the sad creepiness of it that bothers me, it's the fact that the joke was never funny, and certainly isn't by now, despite the endless amusement it seems to give her. The insult to the world of comedy is far worse than any of the other effects it has had here.

Part of the solution, or...
I hope it is clear that prompt notice was taken of an issue raised by a part of the overall membership of this site.
Notwithstanding that the member referenced in the changed name stated more than once that he was fine with it, ultimately the decision was that this was not the path to take going forwards.
The matter is now somewhat academic given my understanding that the name-changed member in question has permanently ceased posting here following a series of hostile posts. That is her right, of course, but it seems unfortunate that events took this turn.
Although she is not BANNED, if we are truly considering what is fair, it does seem somewhat harsh that here and there she is still being discussed/"called out" by those who remain. It seems to me that it is time for the public denigration to cease...
As always, YMMV.

On a separate note, for the avoidance of doubt, and appreciating that most of the references will have been made in jest, recently discarded names are not available for "transfer".

Re: The one and only "discussing other people's name change" thread
Some of the name changes just seemed weird:
Formerly known as... Shiny new moniker...!
Sierra Disc The Antipodean --- funny and weird
Mister Peepers The Man with the Golden Doujinshi ---- funny and really weird
Vibiana RunBandoRun - controversy and drama, oh my!
Thor Simpson Th0r S1mpson ---- weirdo... he regrets it!
cwwallace CapRockBrewingCo. --- You are a company?
TLwizard tlwizard --- you did that just to mess with peoples' OCD, didn't you?
missflores Formerly known as missflores ---- the weirdest one of them all - I guess she doesn't need the formerly known as in her location?
dogmatica story - huh?
pedagogue NotThatGuy - both names weird, but interesting...
John Slider JohnSlider - removed the space? odd
Enormous Genitals TK ----- where the hell did you come from?
mcfly My Other Self ---- interesting change
Todd B. TheBang - The Bang?

The Man with the Golden Doujinshi
Is way too long. It screws with the forum when he is the last poster in the thread. Isn't there a limit on how long a name can be?

Re: The one and only "discussing other people's name change" thread
In general use I don't see any "forum-screwing" effect i.e for me the names simply spread over two lines looking at the end of this thread which (at the time of my posting) features the member you have cited : http://forum.dvdtalk.com/store-forum...l#post11747840
However, checking what happens at sign-up, there is a board-imposed limit of 15 alphanumerics and maybe this is why.
From what you've said, Gizmo, you have encountered a problem manifesting only when a long-named member is the final poster in a thread. I will flag this with Adam and IB. For the short-term, I will commit to one further change at the request of any member from the name-change thread whose new name is greater than 15 alphanumerics (including spaces). The two other obviously long names from that thread are "Formerly known as...." and "Rex Power..."
Had I known that this would present an issue I certainly would have included a limit in the opening post of that thread, or later if someone had flagged it while the exercise was in progress. And, when I come to think about it, we've had "D.Pham4GLTE (>60GB)" for a very long time and I don't recall anyone ever mentioning there being a problem of this particular nature.
A quick screen capture - not from a thread end but presenting exactly the same as the link in my initial paragraph:
This may end up being a needs of the many/needs of the few kind of situation but, especially given the apparently isolated impact, I'd like to be clear that I'd not like this to develop into something that will cause discord amongst any of the parties involved.

I checked the end of the thread referenced above in FireFox 22, IE and Chrome and did not see any issues.
I can only see an issue if there were no spaces in the name, like: CapRockBrewingCo. - but that only expanded the user column for that user... I have not seen a post by him at the end of thread yet.

Um, so apparently my profile now redirects to someone else's. I can only guess this was caused by something in the course of the name change?
You can see the URL clearly shows that it should be my profile, but the page just as clearly is not!
