How do spammers make money on the forums?

With the recent bombardment of spam to the forums, I always wonder how they make money by doing this? Do they honestly think someone on here is gonna click on the links they post? Is that how they make revenue by a few people opening the links? Seems pretty stupid of them when they spent all this time on the boards only to be banned fairly quickly.

I'm not sure how they do it, but then again I'm often too busy to ponder that while drinking a refreshing Coca-Cola™ brand beverage.
