Suggestion of new category for dvdTalk coverage
Just something to add to your suggestion box to read when you're bored, it's a rainy day, the cars don't start, all your TV monitors and dvd players are dead, and the pin-the-tail-on-the-Jules boardgame hasn't been released yet:
-- dvdTalk could have a alpha-version webpage that lists the various flaws, out-of-spec, mis-published, or miscellaneous defects of various DVD releases. It could be similar to the anime versions mentioned in my post in the thread at http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...0&pagenumber=2. Or is there another major DVD webforum elsewhere that has started coverage of this topic yet??? It is a new frontier, but as DVD starts to become more prevalent, it is another item that might be of importance to people visiting your website to determine which DVD to choose, which to wait for, etcetera.

A great idea. I have wondered if there was one resource for this kind of information. It would be extremely helpful for potential buyers of used DVDs.

The item below was extracted from my prior post's referenced thread.
One problem with DVD is the automatic herd instinct of the public to accept a DVD disc as being perfectly made or that the show even meets average technical DVD standards. Just because it has been stamped out on a dvd format platter doesn't mean it is all you expect it to be, right? The manufacturer might not even have included everything advertised. Generally, studios don't issue factory recalls for mistakes and hope that the buying public just buys the darn thing and never realizes until it is too late (past the return date to the store). EXAMPLES OF DVD PROBLEMS FOR WHICH STUDIOS KEEP MUM: DVD Bug List are listed at this website with examples shown for anime DVD. Re-releases on DVD sometimes may have slightly edited footage or cuts from the VHS/priorDVD/laser version are mentioned at this website with examples provided for anime DVD. Web forum discussing DVD flaws and glitches for various anime DVD. Sometimes, studios quietly offer replacement deals for those who complain and mention the appropriate forum. |

Possibly the best idea I've heard on here in a couple of weeks! It is nothing pressing but very cool.

Todd's above dvdTalk URL expired, but there is a newer discussion of DVD defects in the current thread at "Collective list of defective DVDs and further information"
Another potential problem area is the presence of Macrovision. Sometimes, if you string a signal through other equipment, that signal acts funny. Anime discs with or without Macrovision described HERE
