I am looking for a DVD player that ignores the directives from the DVD to disable certain buttons. Generally this is the menu, chapter advance, etc. that would allow you to skip intros, previews, etc. There is nothing worse that throwing in a Disney DVD and forced to suffer through 20 minutes of previews first.

Do such DVD players exist? If so, what are the good ones? I'd love one that can upconvert.

Thanks for the info

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California regulators have adopted the nation's first energy-efficiency standards for televisions, a move that will eventually ban power-hungry sets from the state's store shelves.

Wednesday's action by the California Energy Commission could lead the way in a general reform of standards for an industry increasingly focused on wide-view, flat-screen, high-definition sets.

The 5-0 vote by the California Energy Commission is just the latest effort by the state to secure its place in the forefront of the environmental movement.

California represents such a big consumer market that environmental groups hope the new standards will lead manufacturers to make energy-saving TVs for the rest of the nation, just as California's stringent fuel standards for cars and trucks forced automakers to produce more efficient models for all of the U.S.

"Once again, California is leading the way, and we hope others will follow," said Noah Horowitz, senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Some manufacturers warned that the regulations will cripple innovation, limit consumer choice and hurt California stores, because people could simply buy TVs out of state or online. The industry also complained that manufacturers will be forced to make televisions with poorer picture quality and fewer features than those sold elsewhere in the U.S.

"Instead of allowing customers to choose the products they want, the commission has decided to impose arbitrary standards that will hamper innovation and limit consumer choice," said Jason Oxman, a vice president with the Consumer Electronics Association. "It will result in higher prices for consumers, job losses for Californians, and lost tax revenue for the state."

Californians buy about 11 percent of the 35.4 million TVs sold in the U.S. each year, according to industry figures. The industry group said it was already working with the federal government to promote more efficient TVs through the federal Energy Star program.

"We have every confidence this industry will be able to meet the rule and then some," Energy Commissioner Julia Levin said. "It will save consumers money, it will help protect public health, and it will spark innovation."

At least one TV manufacturer has said it could meet the standards — Vizio Inc., the largest seller of flat screens.

The regulations requiring televisions to be more efficient will be phased in beginning in 2011.

The new standards will apply to new televisions up to 58 inches. Those larger than 58 inches, which account for no more than 3 percent of the market, were left out in a concession to sellers of high-end home-theater TVs. But the commission is expected to regulate them in the future.

The commission estimates that TVs account for about 10 percent of a home's electricity use. The fear is that energy use will rise as people buy bigger, more elaborate TVs, put more of them in their homes, and watch them longer.

The average plasma TV uses more than three times as much energy as an old cathode-ray tube set. Liquid-crystal display, or LCD, TVs use about 43 percent more energy than tube sets, according to Pacific Gas & Electric Co., the state's biggest utility. LCDs now account for about 90 percent of the 4 million TVs sold in California each year.

Under the rules adopted Wednesday, all new 42-inch TV sets must use less than 183 watts by 2011 and less than 116 watts by 2013.

That is considerably more efficient than flat-screen TVs placed on the market in recent years. A 42-inch Hitachi plasma TV sold in 2007 uses 313 watts, while a 42-inch Sharp Liquid-crystal display, or LCD, TV draws 232 watts, according to the Energy Commission.

The energy commission previously set aggressive energy-efficiency standards for refrigerators, washing machines and other household appliances, paving the way for more efficient models sold nationwide.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091119/...rnia_tv_energy

I find that 10% figure hard to believe, even with gas ppliances. But I don't watch much tv anyway.

So I remember one poster saying the Samsung LED LCDs use far less power, so I suppose there will be more demand for them which could be a good thing.

Please help with an HDTV suggestion for bedroom.

I did this last year and the consensus was the entry level 42" Panny. I think it was the 80U or something like that and it went on sale over the holidays, I believe it was cyber Monday, for $599 and I was stupid and thought I'd do better. I never did, the price went back up, and I've regretted not buying it. Big time.

We do not use our bedroom TV much at all. 5 hours or so per week now. Yes, it will go up some if we upgrade, but not a ton. We do plan to add another HD cable box and will add a BD player. But the BD player is mostly because we want the choice, not because we're going for the home theater thing in the bedroom. There will never be a receiver or speakers added to this.

We want something at 40-42 inches. I'm not a big fan of LCDs, but saw a Sony Bravia 40" and would consider it, but I really prefer the look of plasmas. The leader right now is the Panasonic entry level again, the Viera S1. That's going for $797 at Amazon now and I'm hoping to see it go down during a holiday sale. The next model up, is the G10 and I'd like it, but with the extra money saved by getting the lower priced model, I can pay for BD player. Budget is a major concern. It would be best if there was a Panny plasma at 40", but that's not an option.

I'm still a little lost about what's best for 24p and what to do to avoid flickering and, yes, the G10 also has the THX mode which CNET seemed to like a lot, but the reviews are of the S1 are still solid and I think it has a better chance of being discounted more.

I'm also wondering about the speakers, because they're mixed reviews...

I'm also wondering about the speakers, because they're mixed reviews about the ones on the Panny that face down. Will it, at least, sound as good as our old Sony tube tv its replacing (the speakers face out)? Because that is plenty good enough for bedroom viewing of HD cable and any kind of DVD in the bedroom.

Does anyone else have a suggestion, because I HAVE to pull the trigger this year? Anyone really think that if we go with the Panny that the speakers won't even cut it as good enough for medium bedroom use or does anyone think the entry level Panny is not as good as something else I'm not even considering? Finally, if the entry level Panny is the choice, do you think I'm right to think it has a good chance of being one of the models we see go on sale on cyber monday or around the holidays, like the entry level Panny did last year? I've seen that this might be $650 on BF, but it's a rumor.

Many thanks to anyone who helps here. And I should have listened to you last year and will listen this year.

Hey guys! I know everything about the different aspect ratios but I've come across a problem with my PS3/Blu Ray which is connected to a projector.

- 4X3 (for full frame presentations)
and
- Letterbox (which stretches a non-anamorphic widescreen picture to anamorphic proportions...sort of a pre-set zoom button)

On my previous DVD player, the "letterbox" function worked fine, but I've tried it on several non-anamorphic movies on my BD player and the picture stretches VERTICALLY. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? Thanks.

Hello,

Here's my setup -- everything is connected via HDMI
LG 52LG60 LCD TV
Onkyo 706 (bought refurbished from Onkyo store)
Samsung BDP-1600 Blu-ray player
Insignia NS-BRDVD3 Blu-ray player
Toshiba HD-A35 HD DVD player
All HD movies are played at 24p/1080p (video is passed through to the TV, not processed by the receiver. I even tried 1080p/60 to no avail - same results)

I don't know if it's coincidence, but it seems that whenever I play a movie with DTS-HD audio, I get random audio skips throughout the movie. The audio will just stop for a split second, and continue fine after that. The video will also skip slightly as well -- all at the same time. It's pretty annoying and I don't know what else to try. I've been trying to get my system setup completely, and this is the only thing that is not working properly. All random during the movie -- sometimes early on, sometimes later on.

When I play an HD DVD, it does not happen. However, this could be that all of my HD DVD movies only have Dolby TrueHD or Dolby Digital Plus.
The overwhelming majority of my BDs have DTS-HD MA audio. I've been trying all 4 of the HDMI inputs on the receiver, different cables = all with the same result. The common link appears to be DTS-HD. I even tested out my PS3 (first gen, 60gb model), which does not bitstream the HD audio, but still passes the HD audio via PCM. The movie appeared to play fine (Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor)

I'm now playing a BD with Dolby TrueHD (Eagle Eye) -- so far, so good.

Does this sound weird to anyone?

Any tips or advice, I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Thanks!

I'm at a loss -- I thought it was a problem with my HDMI cables, but that was not the case. The same cables work fine with my HD DVD player. I thought maybe it was a firmware issue with the BD players, but it happens on 2 different ones, 2 manufacturers. The same thing happened on a previous Insignia BD player (NS2-BRDVD), and that's why I exchanged it for the NS-BRDVD3 model.

Are there any DVD upconverters that will upconvert 4:3 material correctly !??!?!

my TV (Olevia 337H) does not have any setting that will help out.

My LG RC797T upconverts fine, except that it stretches all 4:3 TV shows.

I see that Oppo is out of the DVD player market altogether.

Who else makes an upconverting DVD player with an adjustment for 4:3 ?????

Upgrading from SONY XBR1 (LCOS) to Panny TC-P50G10.. questions

I'm new to Plasmas - Just purchased the TC-P50G10 and should have it on Saturday.
Upgrading from the old, green blobby LCoS SXRD: KDS-R50XBR1

A few questions -

1) Compared to the SXRD, what types of differences can I expect with the G10? Color, brightness, darks, clarity, etc?
Used primarily for Blu Ray, HDDVD, SD DVD and some games (not often on the games)

2) Is burn-in an issue still? While I wouldn't use it for games often, should I avoid 2.35:1 movies for the first so-many hours and stick to 1.78:1?

3) I see people referring to someone elses settings in other online posts. I always heard that this was a bad idea (at least with DLP's and the like) to "share" confirguration settings. Will borrowing settings give a pretty close image across all plasmas in the line?

4) Any suggestions on a remote control? I have a Sony STR receiver, Xbox 360 w/ HDDVD, Toshiba HD-A3 (HDDVD), LG HD Tuner/HD Upconverting DVD player and PS3. I like the touchscreens, but is one a 'clear winner'? I don't want to lose buttons (some don't have "top menu", BD color buttons, etc)

My first HDTV.....honest!!

I bought my first flat-panel yesterday. (first for my house) Technically, this is my first HD*TV*, although I have been enjoying HD on a fairly large screen for several years.

And, after all the recommendations constantly thrown out about Panny plasmas (including many by myself), we went out and bought a Panasonic……LCD. I know, it sounds hypocritical if you follow this forum. But they don’t actually make 32” plasmas, so what can you do?

We had discussed a 26” TV to replace our dying old 20” tube with essentially the same size screen. And then the wife says we should really just get a 32” and deal with it sticking out 6 more inches. I capitulated rather easily to the larger size, I’m afraid. I mean, she is the one paying for it, ought to keep her happy. ;) I probably should’ve ordered one from Dell, as posted in a recent thread, but we got this model (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11474659&whse=BC&Ne=5000001%204000000&eCat=BC|79|2341&N=4001374%204294967278&Mo=3&No=4&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&topnav=) from Costco, I think they are almost exactly the same model. She has this thing about Costco.

Looks and sounds good so far. Switched to the Cinema video setting and made sure no video or audio “modes” were turned on. Get this, I get it mostly hooked up, scan for channels and hit channel up a couple times just to put something onscreen while I finish fiddling around. It’s CBS and the picture is so grainy my wife actually said, "even I can tell that looks terrible." (it was a flashback scene in Cold Case,...

Get this, I get it mostly hooked up, scan for channels and hit channel up a couple times just to put something onscreen while I finish fiddling around. It’s CBS and the picture is so grainy my wife actually said, "even I can tell that looks terrible." (it was a flashback scene in Cold Case, graininess intentional) See, they claim to not notice anything, but they do!

We had gone back and forth on a few sets, then finally settled on the Panny after looking at the row of TVs from an extreme angle. It easily bested all the others on maintaining color and brightness from maybe 160+deg angle. They all claim 175+ viewing angle, but this one delivered. Not that I plan on watching it from that far off axis, generally.

So, after one evening, definitely a recommended TV.
