June 30 (dusk)
1. Passengers. (2016)-Blu-Ray-- I laughed at a man with no pants, until I realized I have no legs.
Passengers was much better than the reviews had led me to believe.

July 1
2. The Arrival (1996)-TV-- The greatest danger facing our world has been the planet's best kept secret...until now..
The real science fiction twist here is believing Charlie Sheen as an astronomer who discovers that global warming is a plot by aliens to transform our climate into one suitable for their colonization of our planet.
3. Viral. (2016)-Streaming--Keep your mask on!"
Despite the low budget, Viral is an effective sci-fi/ horror film about two teen sisters trying to survive a parasitic disease pandemic that has destroyed civilization.

July 2
4. The Neverending Story (1984)-TV-- Say my name!
This hasn't aged well, but the underlying message is eternal.

July 3
5. The Thing (1982)-Blu-Ray--I dunno what the hell's in there, but it's weird and pissed off, whatever it is.
The new Scream Factory Blu looks spectacular on my TV. It's odd to reflect that this is a beloved classic, yet I remember when it was released tons of SF fans moaned that Carpenter was "ruining" the 1951 original.
6. The Abyss (1989)-TV-- Oh no, look who's with them. Queen Bitch of the Universe.
Cameron needs to get off his ass and get this and True Lies released on Blu. It's a crime that these movies are only available on non-anamorphic DVDs. The extended edition of The Abyss adds so much more to the film, IMO.
7. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961)-Streaming-- Voyage to amazing atomic adventure!
A fairly tame adventure flick, and amazingly sexist toward the female characters.

July 7
8. Hanger 10 (2016)-Streaming--"Based on a true story"
A found footage UFO flick that uses the Blair Witch template but is more of a tedious slog toward a lame payoff.
9. Shadows on the Wall (2015)-Streaming--"What about Palmer?"
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this micro-budget flick. Three friends create a device that can see beyond the observable universe, and something signals back.

July 8
10. Men in Black II (2002)-TV--Why did you put them rats in my locker, man?
A step down from the original, but still entertaining.

July 9
11. Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970)-Stream--This is World Control speaking.
Great suspense film with a downer ending. Supposedly, Ron Howard was going to remake this, but it went nowhere.

July 10
12. Logan's Run S1 E1: Pilot/ Logan's Run S1 E2: The Collectors

July 12
13. Logan's Run S1 E3: Capture/ Logan's Run S1 E4: The Innocent
14. Logan's Run S1 E5: Man Out of Time/ Logan's Run S1 E6: Half Life

July 14
15. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)-TV-- He says the sun came out last night. He says it sang to him.
The spaceship effects are too toylike, but this old classic still works for me.
16. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)-TV-- Klaatu Barada Nikto!
Classic film. How anyone could watch this and then make that Keanu Reeves abomination is beyond me.

July 15
17. Quatermass and the Pit (1967)-TV-- Martians!
My favorite subgenre is ancient magic meeting modern science. Lifeforce clearly borrowed from this film.

July 16
18. Game of Thrones S7 E1: Dragonstone/ The Strain S4 E1: The Worm Turns

July 17
19. Rewind (2013)-Stream--You want us to save New York!
A TV-movie that is a failed pilot.

July 19
20. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)-Blu-Ray--!Mola Ram! Prepare to meet Kali... in Hell!
I think not doing this in 3-D was a missed opportunity for Spielberg.
21. Cloverfield (2008)-Blu-Ray--!Beth!
Who knew the dumb best friend would end having the most successful career after this movie?

July 20
22. The Confederate States of America (2004)-Streaming-- Learn the nature of freedom diseases!
A low-budget, yet cleverly made, Ken Burns-style faux documentary about an alternate universe where the Confederates won the Civil War.
23. The Philadelphia Experiment (1984)-Streaming--[i] You know, I got it all figured out... Navy owes me 40 years back pay/i]
One of the more entertaining time-travel movie of the 80s.

Re: The 10th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List Thread

Title in BLACK = From my own personal DVD / BluRay collection.
Title in RED = Seen online (Netflix / Youtube).
Title in ORANGE = Seen on Amazon.com's Prime service.
Title in GREEN = Seen in movie theater during it's current theatrical run
Title in PURPLE = Seen on regular TV broadcast
* = First time viewing.

I'll be using the Horror Challenge type of listing where movies count as one entry and TV shows count 2 hour-long or 4 half-hour episodes per entry.

July 1
1. 2010
(1984) Sequel to 2001 not as lofty or ambiguous as the Kubrick film but still a very good movie in its own right. A trio of Americans travel along with a crew of Russians in their craft to rendezvous with the stranded Discovery where the sentient computer HAL lies dormant. Meanwhile, another Monolith is discovered, this one two miles long, orbiting Jupiter.

July 2
TIME TRAVEL MOVIE MARATHON BEGINS!
See all the time travel movies in my collection
2. Predestination*
(2014) Had not cracked open my DVD copy as I was waiting for the challenge to begin. Excellent movie with a very unique twist which I cannot give away here. Based on a short story by Robert Heinlein which I downloaded to my eReader as soon as I finished the movie. Recommended.
3. The Spirit of '76 (1990) Comedy movie which is a spoof of all things of the seventies. In the future all historical records have been lost so a trio of time travelers go back to 1776 to retrieve a copy of the Constitution. The time machine malfunctions and they end up in 1976 instead.
4. Millennium (1989) Totally underrated movie starring Cheryl Ladd and Kris Kristofferson. A unique looking film and an interesting plot about a dying future society who sends people to the past into airplanes they know will crash so they can steal the passengers and send them to the future to replenish the dying human race.

July 3
5. A Sound of Thunder
(2005) Movie that really tries to be interesting but fails totally. The computer generated effects have aged very badly giving the movie a cheap look. Peter Hyams directed the movie but the talent he showed in 2010, Outland and Capricorn One is nowhere to be seen. Loosely based on the short story by Ray Bradbury.
6. Time After Time (1979) A personal favorite of mine and many others, this exciting tale sees H.G. Wells pursuing Jack the Ripper in modern day San Francisco where he has fled using Well's time machine. A great movie with a charming love story at it's core as Wells befriends a beautiful bank employee who joins him in the pursuit of Jack.

July 4
7. The Butterfly Effect
(2004) One of the best time travel movies of all time with an interesting premise: it is not the body that travels in time but the consciousness and inhabits the body of your earlier self. A young man (Ashton Kutcher) discovers his gift and uses it to try to fix a trauma from his past.
8. The Butterfly Effect 2 (2006) Not nearly as good as the first one but still worth a watch. The best thing here is the stunning Erica Durance who plays the wife of the the traveler. The reason this one is not as compelling is because the reason the guy travels to the past is to improve his job opportunities.
8.5. The Twilight Zone - Episodes: The last flight / The trouble with Templeton Both of these episodes involve time travel.

July 5
9.5. The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations
(2009) Several notches better than the first sequel, this one is a pretty good watch. The story involves a time traveler who helps solve crimes by going to the past and witnessing them. But then, instead of just witnessing, he tries to stop a murder and that's when it all goes awry. Pretty good.
10.5 Lost in Space (1998) Seen with commentary by director Stephen Hopkins and writer Akiva Goldman No a time travel movie per se but time traveling does play an important role in the plot. A very underrated movie IMO with a very (overly)ambitious story that never quite gels. Listening to the commentary really helped understand the grand scope the film was trying to achieve. The early digital effects sometimes hurt the movie but the acting and the story is solid.

July 6
11. The Twilight Zone
- Episodes: Once upon a time / One hundred yards over the rim Both of these episodes involve time travel.

July 7
12. Lost in Space
(1998) Seen with commentary by the head of special effects, the editor, the cinematographer and lighting.
13. Back to the Future (1985) I read somewhere that if you don't like Back to the Future you just don't like movies. Well, I like this movie. Hadn't seen it in years but it still holds up as a timeless film (pun intended).
Time Travel Movie Marathon ends!

14. Wonder Woman
(2017) A great movie that does justice to Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot is just perfect as the Amazon. Highly recommended.

July 8
15. Creatures the World Forgot*
(1971)
16. Ender's Game (2013)
17. 300: Rise of an Empire (2014)
18. Spider-Man: Homecoming* (2017)

July 9
19. The Twilight Zone*
Episodes: And when the sky was opened (1959) / In his image (1963) / The last night of a jockey (1963) The middle episode is an hour long (broadcast time).
20. WILDCARD 1: House of Flying Daggers (2004)
21. Red Sonja (1985)

July 10
22. The Man in the High Castle*, S2
(2016) Episodes: Duck and cover / Kintsugi

July 11
23. The Man in the High Castle*, S2
(2016) Episodes: Land O' Smiles / Loose lips

July 12
24. The Man in the High Castle*, S2

Re: The 10th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List Thread

Brainee's 2017 DVDTalk Summer Sci-Fi Challenge List

Goal: 31
Total:
First Time Views:

= first time viewing

July 1st
1. ☼ Arrow (Season 3): "Nanda Parbat", "The Offer"

July 2nd
2. ☼ The Venture Bros. (Season 3): "The Buddy System", "Dr. Quymn, Medicine Woman", "What Goes Down Must Come Up", "Tears of a Sea Cow"

3. ☼ Despicable Me 3 (2017): Pretty much what I was expecting (and what I would anyone familiar with the series would be expecting).

4. ☼ Okja (2017): Like other Joon-ho Bong movies, you can't really have any expectations except to know you're going to get something really good I intentionally went into this not knowing much, and it turned out to be less fantasy/sci-fi than I was expecting (the giant GMO pigs aren't a stretch from today's world).

5. ☼ The Flash (Season 1): "Out of Time", "Rogue Time"

July 3rd
6. ☼ The Flash (Season 1): "Tricksters", "All Star Team Up"

7. ☼ For the Love of Spock (2016): For the most part very good, especially when not trying to be too cutesy and just let the stories and footage speak for themselves.

8. ☼ Get Out (2017): I know it was OK'ed in the other thread, but this really feels like it's appropriate to use a wild card to count this one. Fortunately I was able to watch this with exposure to minimal spoilers. Wildcard #1

9. ☼ Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: "Reptilicus"

July 4th
10. ☼ Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: "Cry Wilderness"

11. ☼ Arrow (Season 3): "Suicidal Tendencies", "Public Enemy"

July 5th
12. ☼ Arrow (Season 3): "Broken Arrow", "The Fallen"

13. ☼ Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: "The Time Travelers"

July 6th
14. ☼ The Flash (Season 1): "Who is Harrison Wells?", "The Trap"

15. ☼ The Girl with All the Gifts (2016): Thought for sure this would have a sci-fi tag at either imdb or allmovie. But it doesn't so that makes it Wildcard #2

16. ☼ Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: "Avalanche"

July 7th
17. ☼ Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017): A huge improvement over the last two "Amazing" movies (whose lead I never bought as Peter Parker). I'm just sorry we didn't get to hear Captain America's advice for those going through the changes of puberty

18. ☼ Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: "The Beast of Hollow Mountain"

July 8th
19. ☼ The Flash (Season 1): "Grodd Lives"; ☼ Doctor Who(Season 10): "The Doctor Falls"

20. ☼ Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: "Star Crash"

July 9th
21. ☼ Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: "The Land that Time Forgot"

July 10th
22. ☼ Arrow (Season 3): "Al Sah-him", "This is Your Sword"

23. ☼ The Flash (Season 1): "Rogue Air"; ☼ Arrow (Season 3): "My Name is Oliver Queen"

July 11th
24. ☼ A Monster Calls (2016): Reminded me a lot of Bridge to Terabithia, using a fantasy backdrop while mostly being concerned about a real-life coming of age drama about dealing with tragedy.

25. ☼ Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: "The Loves of Hercules"

July 12th
26. ☼ Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: "Yongary"

July 13th
27. ☼ The Flash (Season 1): "Fast Enough"; ☼ The Venture Bros. (Season 3): "Now Museum - Now You Don't!", "The Lepidopterists"

28. ☼ Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: "Wizards of the Lost Kingdom"

29. ☼ Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: "Wizards of the Lost Kingdom II"

July 14th
30. ☼ Life (2017): This evening I'm catching up on a couple of recent sci-fi themed movies that good mixed responses. I'm setting my expectations appropriately low. And this ... was pretty much what I expected. A well-made generic sci-fi/horror time passer. It probably doesn't speak well for the movie that the ending, no doubt intended to shock and horrify audiences, made me
Spoiler:
Just the obvious way the whole thing was set up, and the overdone "Noooooooo!!!!!" by the two remaining characters.

31. ☼ A Cure for Wellness (2016): This what about what I was expecting as well (and that's just fine). It had style to burn, for sure ... and I'm a big fan of the stylish European gothic horror movies of the 60's that this is so clearly channeling. This badly needed tightening up with at least 30 fewer minutes. And maybe a more charismatic lead actor to carry things.

July 15th
32. ☼ Belladonna of Sadness (1973): I can see how the animation style (or lack of animation style, as was often the case) will be a deal-breaker for some viewers. That said, this was quite captivating. When experimental cinema works, it can make quite an impression.

33. ☼ Evolution (2015): What's it mean? I'm not sure I know. But like the director's earlier film Innocence, lack of a cohesive story is balanced out by some startling images, haunting mood, and a brief running time.

34. Journey to the Seventh Planet (1962): Good grief ... how have I subjected myself to three (so far) Ib Melchior movies this month?!?! This one didn't have the benefit of wise-cracking robots (though this movie is certainly a prime candidate for such treatment). That said, it wasn't boring (which is the real kiss of death for cheap sci-fi movies from this era). And you had a giant rat cyclops monster, which is something I never saw before. I got a chuckle out of the fact that cast members couldn't pronounce things like déjà vu (said like "view") and annihilation (left out the "hil" part).

July 16th
35. ☼ Children Who Chase Lost Voices (2011): With the retirement of Miyazaki, Makoto Shinkai is one of my favorite anime directors (it's between him and Mamoru Hosoda). This movie comes across as a Miyazaki homage. Which is not a bad thing at all, when it's done as well as this. Still, I can't wait to see his latest Your Name (Kimi No Na Wa) which by all accounts is absolutely brilliant.

36. It Came From Outer Space (1953): I must have seen this before, but it was so long ago I didn't remember anything. Certainly my first time seeing it in 3D, which was quite well done (aside the obvious meteors and aliens in our faces, the depth of the desert scenery looks great). One of the better sci-fi movies of the time, as you'd expect from director Jack Arnold (and based on a Ray Bradbury story).

37. Master of the World (1961): Nowhere near the level of the earlier Verne adaptation 20,000 Leagues, but solid entertainment nonetheless. Price is in good form and Charles Bronson is at his manly peak (so manly so cuckold's another man's fiance without even trying).

July 17th
38. Escape from New York (1981): Breaking in a couple of Shout Factory Blu Rays tonight.

39. Invasion of the Bee Girls (1973): I forgot this was the first movie Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II) worked on. Not that the writing was particularly good in this movie (in fact it was laughably bad). Still, for those who can tolerate cinematic cheese this is a fun watch. Lots of attractive women in various states of undress, and the occasional truly effective scene (such as the scene where we see how a woman is transformed in a Bee Girl). I wish that a little more effort was put into the science though.

July 19th
40. ☼ Embers (2015): Somber movie that doesn't really go anywhere plot-wise. But the image of a post-apocalyptic world affected by a memory-destroying disease through a series of vignettes was a striking one.

41. ☼ The Little Prince (2015): I thought this was really great, and a different spin on the original story. I kept putting this off because the animation in the Netflix images looked so primitive, but it turned out that was a style used sparingly in the "story-telling" sequences. I really was expecting at the end though:
Spoiler:
a scene where the girl tells off the academy for pushing the idea that the goal of all children when they grow up is to be essential (though clearly it can be interpreted beyond just being essential to the workplace).

42. ☼ Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: "Carnival Magic"

Game of Thrones (Season 7): "Dragonstone"
