Re: The Eighth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2017

I'm trying to decide just what to watch to finish the month... At the moment I'm coming up short on just what to use as I can't find any unopened movies or TV shows that fit my theme...

I completed my full viewing or Gilligan's Island sometime last week. It was still a very enjoyable show and the quality of the DVDs is very good.

I finished S8 of Newhart last night. Many of those last 10 or so episodes were just as rough a slog as during the original airings. They were mostly episodes fully featuring Stephanie and Michael and baby Stephanie. Since I don't particularly care for Michael or Stephanie, I found most of those hard to sit through - just as I did during their original airing. Considering how Newhart feels about babies/kids on shows I'm surprised he put up with it. Maybe knowing it was the final season and wasn't his and Joanna's kid made the difference. Anyway... Even knowing what was coming, I got just as much of a laugh from the final scene as I did during that original airing.

I've been unable to locate where I put my copy of Heart's Afire to use as a filler. I know it's in the house somewhere - just not exactly where. I pretty much went through everything last week while looking for the Rifleman sets to get all of them in a single location and didn't run across that one. The bad part is it's not where I recall it being - but I sorted and moved that pile ~8 months back so there's no telling just where it wound up. I still have a couple of harder to search locations I may dig through later...

I've never seen
Spoiler:
Rules of Attraction
. Is it good, and worth watching before the commentary?

Finally watching The Umbrellas of Cherbourg--I didn't realize it's entirely through-sung. Why else would you sing lines like "He hasn't done his military service" and "I don't have the courage to face my troubles and my debts."?

Have you listened to the Dodgeball unrated commentary? I used to listen to commentaries while I was working, and that was one of the most memorable.

I've started working my way through the Discovery nature documentary series, North America, and have so far watched the first two episodes. It's not the first time I've seen it, but I'm enjoying revisiting the show. Tom Selleck is a pretty good choice for the narrator in my opinion.

Just finished season 1 of Candle in the Tomb. Well worth the time invested. Happily there's going to be a second season, Candle in the Tomb - The Weasel Grave, a prequel adventure. I don't think it's been released yet, so it's probably going to be a while before it shows up on DramaFever. Tomorrow I'll catch up with Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor and then movies for the rest of the weekend, probably.

Watched Swiss Family Robinson, Treasure Island and Treasure Planet tonight. A bit of a nautical theme going on. Depending on how I feel, I may continue on with Shipwrecked tonight as well. Though, I'm not sure if that quite qualifies as a "classic" Disney film.

Had a bit of surprise, though, didn't realize I hadn't watched Treasure Island since I bought it and when I opened it, it actually had DMR points in it.

I think I'm going to end with ten movies, one serial, and a handful of television episodes. This month has been very, very busy!

I've done a Newsies double feature with the original movie and the Broadway version that just came out digitally last week. I could've also done this for the historical challenge.

I've somewhat slowed down the last few days, between the Historical Challenge, and just watching what I normally watch. Still been having fun though.

I have slowed down the last few days (wife's birthday and then she felt sick) but I managed to exceed my goal by one which was just random chance. The good thing was that there were a lot of very good finales this year so it was a very fun challenge. Dimension X did a great job running things and since I don't do the Historical Challenge I am already hard at work on preparations for the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge!

I hope she feels better soon. I'm still going to be watching my documentaries and sports next month when I feel like it, but mainly because they are part of my normal routine. I'm planning to watch some Tolkien documentaries and a Harryhausen documentary for the Historical Challenge and maybe some shows on ancient astronauts to prime me for the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge myself.

I'm not not going to hit my goal of 31 films, but I won't miss it by too many (depends on how many I can squeeze in tonight).

I was planning to do the Hamilton Books prize drawing around midnight, but I'll probably be in my HT watching movies around then, so it'll be later in the morning before I get to it.

Thanks, but this is easily the easiest challenge to host. I just start a couple of threads and stay out of the way.

How was the Broadway version? Worth the digital price for it?

I finished up with 25 watches, which I'm happy with. I agree that it was a busy month!

Thanks for hosting, Dimension X.

Haven't commented much in this thread, but enjoyed another MYOC.

I looked through the list thread a few times this month. I'd always see titles of favorites or yet-to-be seen films that others were watching that looked interesting. Perhaps that's a future theme--only watch something that someone else has watched.

Didn't do too much, but was nice to crank out movies I have yet to see yet. Next year going to try to do something fun with actor's name and the 2nd degree or something like that.

Re: The Eighth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2017

I ended my Challenge with some episodes of Super Dimension Fortress Macross, on Amazon Prime. I normally wouldn't have started a new series on the last night of a Challenge, but with the Sci-Fi/Fantasy coming up in July, I plan to keep watching this show when I'm not watching normal TV, or working on the Historical Challenge. I started to watch it last year, but stopped when after the first couple episodes, there were no more English subtitles. At least on PlayStation 4, that seems to be fixed now though.

Dimension X, I thank you as well. This one turned out to be a breeze. Binging on all my favorites was incredibly fun.

The three winners have been chosen by random.org. The winners are

wishbone
Trevor
Indy24LA

Check your PMs (unless your name is Trevor, who needs to delete some PMs because his inbox is full).

Congrats to the winners, and to everyone else - if I don't hear back from all three winners, there will be a second-chance drawing for any unclaimed prize(s), so keep your fingers crossed.
