Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

I guess I'm feeling confrontational, because I'm curious as to everyone's opinions on the genre of thrillers. I know we've probably had slight arguments about horror vs thriller every year, but how do you generally feel about counting them?

I'm pretty sure we've had at least subset choice, Silence of the Lambs that technically isn't listed as horror anywhere.

The main reason I ask is that because I keep all of my Horror Challenge content organized separately from the rest of my collection. I've generally been putting my thrillers in with my horrors, but now I'm second guessing myself.

I've always thought they should be counted because a lot of thrillers really fit in line with the horror genre. I think counting them should be a personal choice that goes unchallenged.

With that being said, I have a "Thrillers" section in my media collection.

Also, with my OCD I can't take you seriously until you fix that underlined dash between, "BD Digibook Thread - Free Daily Android App" in your signature. I just got glasses to help with reading from a computer monitor so I must have never noticed it before. But now it's all I see.

I don't understand how Silence of the Lambs is not listed as horror.

To answer your question... in my opinion, most thrillers would fall into the horror category.

Doh, sorry Dick. It bothers me too actually. I just fixed a different similar error yesterday, never saw the one you mentioned though. I'll fix it.

And I really agree with your line that I highlighted up there. I think most of us go that way. Im just slowly realizing (as I've been bindering my horror discs) how many "pure thriller" films I own, and almost feel like I'm "cheating".

I see myself having a lifetime of internal conflict by keeping all my thrillers with my horror, but only considering certain ones eligible for this Challenge.

Yeah, a lot of thrillers seem more cop action drama to me, but I agree that SOTL should have the horror tag as well.

Depends on the thriller. The Silence of the Lambs definitely has horror-related content. Hitchcock's The 39 Steps doesn't. De Palma's Dressed to Kill doesn't have much in the way of horror-related content, but the film is shot-through with the look and feel of a horror film, as is his Blow Out. Breakdown with Kurt Russell cranks up the tension level to 11, but there's nothing in there that is blatantly horrific.

Like I said--it depends on the thriller.

Yeah, Dressed to Kill and Blow Out were the two that were on my mind as I was writing my opinion. I guess I probably classify the non-horror ones as "action/thrillers"

A sure sign that the Horror Movie Challenge is getting close, is I was able to get my first bottle of Pumpkin Coffee Cream of the year today, and just finished my first pumpkin spice latte.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

There needs to be a better distinction between 'psychological thriller' and 'psychological horror'. Lumping Psycho into the same category (the former) as Rear Window, or The Sixth Sense and The Talented Mr. Ripley together is off-putting.

Yeah, I've got some major cleaning to do on the first post. Quite a few of them either ceased to exist or changed their URL. It's currently on the back burner while I'm figuring subsets, but I'll get to it soon. The same goes for the TCM Schedule.

Yep. They don't belong in this one unless they have a horror tag as well.

...which can make it hard to pre-judge. I read that th Rathbone Holmeses use the 'look' of the Universal Horror films (which already umbrella in a lot of 'not even slightly "horror" films'), but presumably aren't; also I got flak for counting creature feature episodes of non-horror TV shows... which should surely be fine. Halloween Peanuts is fine, but obviously neither scary nor "horror"... there's a lot of grey area. (Not sure I'd consider Silence of the Lmbs "horror," either: thriller & crime films/shows feature serial killers consistently - are they all automatically close enough?)

Anybody here know about the Tales From the Darkside TV series? Specifically what - if any - differences between original (Amazon says Paramount, 12 discs) and re-release (ditto)?

[Also, is it any good? And/or is it "horror" enough...]

I don't know the differences between releases, but I've seen episodes on Chiller. I enjoy the show, and would personally consider it a horror anthology series.

To my knowledge the re-release (including Friday the 13th: The Series) is just new packaging with a cheaper MSRP. Basically a box set as opposed to the individual season releases.

And it's easily the best horror anthology series of the 80s, IMO. The Twilight Zone by way of George A. Romero. Movie's good too.

But then you get into the grey areas of gialli, which are just Italian crime thrillers and not really horror IMO, but they have always counted. If we allow gialli, why not American gialli like Dressed to Kill, which is tagged as Mystery/ Thriller, but slap an Italian soundtrack on it and you have Mario Bava crossed with Hitchcock. I'm not advocating for it, because IMO horror has to have a supernatural element, but it's a topic worth discussing.

What about movies like The Fury, which IMDB classifies as Drama/ Thriller, but which is definitely horror to me-- teens who use telekinesis to kill? What's the difference between that film and Carrie?

For me, October means witches, ghosts, demons, vampires, zombies, and so forth, but YMMV.

I agree. I don't equate gialli with horror... at all. Neither do I think "slasher" films are horror films and that includes *lots* of films widely considered to be horror.

I'd say none, but I don't consider Carrie to be a horror film in the truest sense of the word.

Yes. These are the ones I also gravitate towards. I think that's a lot of why I prefer pre-70s horror films as the majority seem to include those elements.

I'm wanting to *finally* open that Thriller set I picked up several years back but much of the first season is more crime/mystery with the horror/supernatural stories coming later. While it all qualifies I'd feel like I were cheating with those non-horror stories. That's also why I've not watched episodes of The Twilight Zone as they can run the gamut of mystery/horror/SF and I know I'd see several non-horror episodes were I to watch a season.

I find most gialli to just be graphic cop films. If there's a horror tag, then there's usually some horror going on.

Rotten Tomatoes tags The Fury as horror https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1008015-fury/ , so I'd count it. Same deal if I find a movie in the horror section at Netflix/Amazon/Hulu. Since the novel is a horror/thriller, I figured one of these places would call it horror.

When in doubt, check a few sites until you find the horror tag you're looking for.

Same here. I don't want to watch a series like that and then worry about which episodes count and don't.

I have both Thriller sets because I think it was Trevor that recommended the other series too. https://www.amazon.com/Thriller-Comp...RJU/ref=sr_1_2

The plot says supernatural horror but there's no horror tag on it, so I'll save it for later. I still have Tales from the Darkside, Friday the 13th and Poltergeist tv shows if I need to take a break from movies.

This. Allowing general thrillers opens the door for too many films that are not in the spirit of the challenge.

Also, don't we still allow wild cards? If something is borderline, you can still count it.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

I'd like to suggest revamping the counting scheme. It's just too onerous for my tastes and frankly I'm bored with it. Currently:

Movies 1 movie = 1 entry

TV:
30 minute shows = ¼ an entry
1 hour shows = ½ an entry
90 minute shows = ¾ an entry
2 hour shows = 1 entry

Mini-Series = 1 entry for each day it aired

Stuff like 90 minute shows = ¾ an entry or two 1 hour shows = 1 entry and a 68 minute (or less) movie = 1 entry always struck me as unbalanced. Simplest would be 1 watch = 1 entry. I mean, sure, it's tradition, but as W. Somerset Maugham said -- "Tradition is a guide and not a jailer."

Anyone have any helpful suggestions?

That takes way too much of the challenge out of it. Watching 100 Tales From The Crypt episodes would be 50 hours and under this suggestion count the same as watching 100 90minute movies or 150 hours of content.

So? Even if I kept track of how many hours I watch (I don't and I know a lot of other people don't either), you're talking quantity over quality. And anyway, there's no prize for how much you watch anymore. Purists can do a traditional count and the rest of us can do a simplified count. I want to have fun watching halloween/horror movies/tv, not slog my way through a bunch of accounting. It doesn't have to be trick or treats it can be trick and treats.

Oh, and I suspect watching 100 episodes of Tales From The Crypt would still be plenty challenging.

I'm also not a fan of revising the counting rules.

Most movies are not less than 68 minutes and TV shows are counted by original air time (so a 44 minute episode counts for an hour) already; personally I think that's a reasonable system for comparing TV and film content (already biased towards giving more 'credit' to TV). If someone really wanted to 'game' the system by watching a bunch of really short movies then that's technically possible - but I don't think there's been m/any cases of this actually happening and it'd be a lame way to enjoy the season (watching dozens of turds just because they're short).

It's true there's nothing more than bragging rights for watching more and it's up to us to decide how to count our own lists but since this is a challenge simplifying it across the board would seem detrimental to me. If we did that then it might negate any point to 'counting' at all. You're right it should ultimately be about just having fun so better not to just stress the numbers; but secondary to that the numbers do matter.
