The 8th Annual Criterion Collection Challenge List Thread

LIST THREAD - 30 Days of Criterion
August 31st (dusk) - October 1 (dawn), 2016

This thread is for LISTS ONLY. Discussion of films, questions about the challenge, etc., should be directed to the Discussion Thread. You are; however, encouraged to provide reviews and comments within your list.

Many people put their checklists in spoiler tags, to allow easier browsing of the list thread by others.

Also, if you are planning to reveal key plots points/endings in your mini reviews, you should put them in spoiler tags. To apply spoiler tags, you can click the spoiler button on the toolbar or use the text below:

[ spoiler] Remove the spaces to really hide something, like this
Spoiler:
The Criterion Collection is a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films on home video.
[ /spoiler]

The challenge officially begins August 31 at dusk in whatever location you are in at the time, and ends on October 1st at dawn in whatever location you are in at that time. Also, feel free to time your final Criterion film(s) to coincide with the start of the Horror Challenge.

Optional Checklist

The checklist is completely optional. It is just a "fun" inclusion to give one a sense of accomplishment, to help one diversify viewing, or to use as a guide on what to watch next.

Each film can count for multiple sections, but only one check mark per section. Example: Pierrot le fou could count for the 1960's in Decades and Jean-Luc Godard in People, but it could not count for Godard and Anna Karina in People. You would need a separate film for Karina.

Re: The 8th Annual Criterion Collection Challenge List Thread

2016 Criterion Challenge

Sept. 1
1. McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971). TV. Robert Altman. #827. Probably Robert Altman's greatest film, this elegiac not-quite-Western plays out like a Greek tragedy, seeing each character led to destruction by their own weaknesses.

Sept. 3
2. Rififi (1955). TV. Jules Dassin. #115. A brutal film to watch and one of the best caper films ever made.
3. The War Room (1993). Hulu. Chris Hegedus & D.A. Pennebaker. #602. Fascinating documentary about the men behind Bill Clinton's successful election in 1992, from the Gennifer Flowers scandal during the primaries that threatened to derail his campaign to the vicious head-to-head fight against Daddy Bush, and to a lesser extent, crazy Ross Perot. Seeing a younger Hillary stoically enduring the fallout from her husband's infidelity and how she connects with the voters instills even more confidence in her election chances this year.

Sept. 4
4. Downhill Racer (1969). TV. Michael Ritchie #494. Gene Hackman and Robert Redford are terrific in this character piece about a champion skier who is an unlikable jerk.
5. The Manchurian Candidate (1962). Blu-Ray. John Frankenheimer. #803. Who could imagine a blowhard politician who uses fear and intimidation to gain notoriety to be in fact a puppet of the Russians? Pure sci-fi! Lawrence Harvey's inability to register emotion serves him well here as a brainwashed pawn of the Communists, and Angela Lansbury is fantastic as the ultimate Mommy Dearest.
--- Essay: "The Manchurian Candidate: Dread Central" / Howard Hampton
--- Video: Interview with Angela Lansbury, 2015

Sept. 8
6. Speedy (1928). TV. Ted Wilde #788. After a rough day at work, there's nothing like relaxing with a glass of wine and a classic Harold Lloyd comedy.

Sept. 9
7. Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (1990). DVD. Akira Kurosawa. #842. Even on a DVD-R from Warner Archive, this movie pops on screen. Kurosawa uses color like a master painter. The stories are fragmented, incomplete and preachy, but the visuals.. . oh. . . the visuals

Sept. 10
8. Valley of the Dolls (1967). DVD. Mark Robson. #835. OK, why did Criterion chose this movie to include in the collection? Yes, it's a camp classic, but even though I love it, it's a deeply flawed film that in no way contains any lasting artistic merit. I'm going to heat up the lasagna.
--- Video: "Gotta Get Off This Merry-Go-Round: Sex, Dolls, and Showtunes"
9. All That Jazz (1979). Blu-Ray. Bob Fosse. #724. Bob Fosse was not just a master choreographer, but a fantastic director who could stretch cinema to its limits.

Sept. 15
10. The Asphalt Jungle (1950). DVD. John Huston. #847.A fantastic caper film with a dream cast.
11. Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964). Blu-Ray. Stanley Kubrick. #821.Another terrific Sterling Hayden performance, this time in a legendary black comedy that, thankfully, is less relevant than it was back in the day. Putin is a dictator, but nowadays there is far less fear of an accidental nuclear war than when I was a young'un. Although Peter Sellers deserves the praise he won for playing multiple characters in this fim, but the entire cast is amazing.

Sept. 24
12. Nashville (1975). Blu-Ray. Robert Altman. #683. Altman perfectly captures the zeitgeist of the 70s, using Nashville as a nexus where politics, showbusiness, race, and sex collide.
13. The In-Laws (1979). Blu-Ray. Arthur Hiller. #823. One of the funniest comedies of the 70s.
--- Video: "In Support of the In-Laws"
--- Video:: Interview with Alan Arkin
--- Trailer

8th Annual Criterion Challenge

*= first time viewing
blue= personal BluRay
purple= personal DVD
green= streaming
orange= borrowed BD/DVD

August 31st
1. Akira (Katsuhiro Ôtomo, 1988 / Japan) --- LD #151 (watched non-Criterion BD)
Kaneda and Tetsuo are members of a biker gang who run into a psychic child, unlocking powerful mutations in the latter. Both become enmeshed in a secret government program. As Tetsuo becomes uncontrollable, it's up to Kaneda and the many other players in Neo-Tokyo to bring him down. This second viewing made me fall in love with the film even more.

--- Video: "Hidden Meaning in Akira - Earthling Cinema" (Wisecrack, 2015 / YouTube)*
--- Video: "107 Akira facts YOU Should Know!" (CartoonHangover, 2015 / YouTube)*

September 1st
2. Throne of Blood (Kumonosu-jô) (Akira Kurosawa, 1957 / Japan) --- Spine #190
Triumphant warriors Washizu and Miki encounter a spirit who gives them prophecies that play on their ambitions. Egged on by his wife, Washizu descends down a murderous path. This is the third time I've seen the film, and every time I'm more and more intrigued with Lady Asaji and Miki whose motives seem both simple and murky.
--- Essay: "Throne of Blood: Shakespeare Transposed" / Stephen Prince
--- Essay: "Throne of Blood" / Donald Richie
--- Video: "Throne of Blood: Noh Shakespeare, No Problems!" (Kyle Kallgren, 2015 / United States / YouTube)
--- Original theatrical trailer

3. I Love Lucy: 2.1, "Job Switching" (William Asher, 1952 / United States) --- CTC #1000L

September 3rd
4. The War Room (Chris Hegedus & D. A. Pennebaker, 1993 / United States / Hulu)* --- Spine #602
Documentarians follow the campaign of Bill Clinton from primary and Presidency. It was a very interesting look at the political process and contrasts well with the earlier Primary which follows JFK. In those thirty years, the process changed drastically in a number of ways. Clinton's campaign managers have a cornucopia of information at their fingertips. Of course, modern elections have even more information, opinions, and voices clamoring for attention.
--- Essay: "The War Room: Being There" / Louis Menand
--- Video: "Three Reasons: The War Room" (Criterion.com, 2012 / United States)*

September 4th
5. The Freshman (Sam Taylor & Fred Newmeyer, 1925 / United States / Hulu)* --- Spine #703
Harold Lloyd stars as Harold Lamb, a college freshman who dreams of becoming the Big Man on Campus. Of course, his path is fraught with perils, misunderstands, and plenty of slapstick. I'm a huge fan of Lloyd's short films. This is the second of his features that I've seen, and it was utterly delightful.
--- Essay: "The Freshman: Speedy Saves the Day! A Harold Lamb Adventure!" / Stephen Winer

6. The Palm Beach Story (Preston Sturges, 1942 / United States) --- Spine #742 (watched non-Criterion DVD)
Everything about this film is absolutely delightful! Claudette Colbert dispenses witty banter with the tenacity of the MicroMachine Man and is only matched when Mary Astor breezes into the film. I watched due to participating in the TCM Slapstick class.
--- Video: "Three Reasons: The Palm Beach Story" (Criterion.com, 2015 / United States)
--- Video: "Mick Garris on The Palm Beach Story" (Trailers From Hell, 2014 / United States)*
--- Essay: "The Palm Beach Story: Love in a Warm Climate" / Stephanie Zacharek

7. Fantastic Planet (La plančte sauvage) (René Laloux, 1973 / France & Czechoslovakia / BD)* --- Spine #820
A friend watched this and enthusiastically recommended it to me. We decided to watch together, and I was just as enthralled by it. The animation is so unique, and the unusual processes used give it an even more unworldly feel. The character design is both brutal and bizarre.
--- Essay: "Fantastic Planet: Gambous Amalga" / Michael Brooke

September 6th
8. All That Heaven Allows (Douglas Sirk, 1955 / United States) --- Spine #95
Jane Wyman plays a widow who falls for Rock Hudson, a much younger outdoorsman. Of course, her two kids and society friends loss their shit. Douglas Sirk does melodrama like no one else, and the over-the-top theatrics and setting (at times a deer wonders in at just the right time) heighten the story without pushing things into camp.
--- Interview: "Contract Kid: William Reynolds on Douglas Sirk" (2007)*
--- Documentary: Behind the Mirror: A Profile of Douglas Sirk (BBC, 1979 / United Kingdom)*
--- Essay: "All That Heaven Allows: An Articulate Screen" / Laura Mulvey (2014)
--- Original theatrical trailer

September 7th
9. Early Spring (Sôshun) (Yasujirô Ozu, 1956 / Japan) --- Eclipse Series #3
A dissatisfied company man starts an affair with a coworker, putting his marriage in jeopardy. While this small family drama drives much of the plot, Ozu constructs an entire world around his love triangle, giving us a sense of the toll white collar work takes on people.

September 8th
10. The Return of Bulldog Drummond (Walter Summers, 1934 / United Kingdom / Hulu)* --- Hulu exclusive
Tenacious, patriotic Bulldog Drummond takes on both domestic and foreign war-profiteers in this fun little mystery. This is a Hulu exclusive, and I wish I had a bit more context for this one. While I enjoyed it, the film feels a bit slight.
11. Vanya on 42nd Street (Louis Malle, 1994 / United States)* --- Spine #599
A group of actors gather in a dilapidated theater to rehearse an adaptation of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. The play follows a Russian family dealing with their estate and the visit of the "golden child", an aging academic who never quite measured up.
--- Essay: "Vanya on 42nd Street: An American Vanya" / Steven Vineberg (2012)
--- Video: "Three Reasons: Vanya on 42nd Street" (Criterion.com, 2012 / United States)
--- Original theatrical trailer

September 9th
12. Bulldog Drummond's Revenge (Louis King, 1937 / United Kingdom / Hulu)* --- Hulu exclusive
When dangerous explosives are hijacked, Drummond is on the case despite the pleas of his bride-to-be. I enjoyed this one more than the 1934 film, but it still feels slight. This reminds me a bit of Basil Rathbone's later Sherlock Holmes films.

September 11th
13. Secret Honor (Robert Altman, 1984 / United States / Hulu)* --- Spine #257
A disgraced, exiled Richard Nixon rants into a tape recorder. He reveals the real reasons behind Watergate as well as the many, many people behind his ascent and fall. It's a beautifully executed monologue, and very engrossing.
--- Essay: "Secret Honor" / Michael Wilmington

14. Trafic (Jacques Tati, 1971 / France)* --- Spine #439
M. Hulot works as a designer of a "camping car" set to debut at an automobile expo. On the way to the expo, Hulot along with a driver and a public relations director are beset with myriad problems. I love Jacques Tati, and his deftly staged gags had me laughing.
--- Television episode: Omnibus - 9.27, "Monsieur Hulot's Work" (1976, United Kingdom)*
--- Original theatrical trailer

September 12th
15. ... And the Pursuit of Happiness (Louis Malle, 1986 / France & United States)* --- Eclipse Series #2
Malle travels around the United States and interviews many immigrants. They span all walks of life and situations. I feel that the documentary is just as important today since political talk about immigration has been dominating a lot of news.

September 13th
16. Harlan County USA (Barbara Kopple, 1976 / United States / DVD)* --- Spine #334
Kopple's documentary chronicles the various miner strikes in the 70s and provides historical context to the trials of the striking miners. This is a devastating glimpse into the way that under regulated industries can exploit workers.
--- Interview: Hazel Dickens (singer-songwriter)
--- Essay: "Harlan County USA: No Neutrals here" / Paul Arthur
--- Original theatrical trailer

September 16th
17. Pather Panchali (Satyajit Ray, 1955 / India)* --- Spine #783
I bought this film unseen on the recommendation of the Filmspotting podcast, and I'm so glad that I did. It's a beautiful mediation on family, faith, poverty, and grief. I cannot wait to watch the other two films.
--- Interview: Soumitra Chatterjee (actor)
--- Interview: Shampa Srivastava (actor)
--- Interview: Soumendu Roy (camera assistant)
--- Excerpts from The Song of the Little Road featuring Ravi Shankar
--- Recording of Ray reading his essay "A Long Time on the Little Road"

September 18th
18. Slacker (Richard Linklater, 1991 / United States)* --- Spine #247
Richard Linklater's film doesn't really have a plot and follows a lot of Austin natives as they walk through the town, philosophizing, theorizing, and simply killing time. I wasn't as taken with this as I've been with his other films, but I really enjoyed it.
--- Selected cast interview "auditions" with introduction
--- Original theatrical trailer

19. The Producers (Mel Brooks, 1967 / United States) --- LD #36 (watched non-Criterion DVD)
An unscrupulous producer drags a mild-mannered accountant into his to scam investors with a surefire hit that ends up being the toast of Broadway. Gene Wilder is perfection as the neurotic Leo. His "I'm hysterical" bit has been quoted by me and my siblings for years.

September 19th
20. Salesman (Albert Maysles, David Maysles, and Charlotte Zwerin, 1968 / United States / Hulu)* --- Spine #122
The Maysles turn their cameras on a group of door-to-door Bible salesmen and their strapped-for-cash clientele. This reminded me too much of the three uncomfortable months I spent cold calling people about mortgages. There is a desperation and pushiness about the whole situation and everyone involved.
--- Essay: "Salesman" / Toby Miller

September 20th
21. Gimme Shelter (Albert Maysles, David Maysles, and Charlotte Zwerin, 1970 / United States / Hulu)* --- Spine #99
The Maysles capture lead up, disaster, and aftermath of the Rolling Stones free concert in San Francisco. Instead of establishing a firm timeline, they focus on the individual faces and moments that tell us how the disaster came about.
--- Essay: "Gimme Shelter: Rock-and-Roll Zapruder" / Amy Taubin
--- Essay: "Gimme Shelter: From Let It Bleed" / Ralph "Sonny" Barger

22. News from Home (Chantal Akerman, 1976 / United States & France)* --- Eclipse Series #19
Akerman's experimental film is more edifying than entertaining. She reads letters from her mother over intimate footage of New York City. The dirty streets and grimy subway harken back to an NYC that has largely disappeared in the public consciousness. I'm a fan of the director and her work, and this film definitely left an impression on me.

September 23rd
23. The Forgiveness of Blood (Joshua Marston, 2011 / United States)* --- Spine #628
An Albanian family deal with societal isolation after the patriarch kills a quarrelsome neighbor. The film shows us a country in flux, moving into the future but holding onto old customs. The situation drove me absolutely crazy!
--- Featurette: "Acting Close to Home"
--- Featurette: "Truth on the Ground"
--- Original theatrical trailer

September 24th
24. Simon of the Desert (Simón del desierto) (Luis Buńuel, 1965 / Mexico)* --- Spine #460
A devoted saint stands atop a pillar in the desert, deals with a plethora of glib visitors, and resists temptation from a voluptuous Satan. It's high satire that I didn't quite grasp.
--- Interview: Silvia Pinal (actress)

September 25th
25. Victim (Basil Dearden, 1961 / United Kingdom / Hulu)* --- Eclipse Series #25
In 1960s London a lawyer investigates a plot to blackmail homosexuals when a young man he loves kills himself. The film shows a deplorable law that ruined the lives of countless people. Thankfully, such anti-LGBT laws have been largely abandoned, but we still have a way to go.

The 8th Annual Criterion Collection Challenge
Films in blue 1001 Movies list
Films in purple First time viewing

1-150

#28 Andy Warhol's Dracula/Blood for Dracula (1974) An ailing vampire count travels to Italy with his servant to find a bride. This movie challenges the viewer to rethink the concept of a loving God.

151-300

301-450

451-600
#544 Head (1968) The Monkees are tossed about in a psychedelic, surrealist, plotless, circular bit of what the hell am I watching. This movie tries its hardest to be the drizzling shits and succeeds magnificently.

601-750

751-900

.
