The Seventh Annual Historical Appreciation Challenge List Thread - June 2016

This is the List Thread.

Believe it or not, folks, but this is the seventh year of the Historical Appreciation Challenge. Travis pored over the 2013 Discussion Thread, and has made the following adjustments for future years. Any other modification suggestions are welcomed right up until the beginning of the challenge, so go ahead and toss out your ideas!

In a nutshell, here are the basics:
  • This challenge will run from dusk on 31 May until dawn on 1 July 2016.
  • Movies and TV content specifically about a historical figure, event or period are eligible.
  • Tangential content (i.e., fantasy, time travel, movies merely set in a generic "past" where the time period is not emphasized as important) is to be excluded, except...
  • The final night of the challenge, from dusk on 30 June until dawn on 1 July, you may watch Time Travel films to count double with your Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge list. However, the setting(s) must have already taken place, so you can't watch a movie set in the future that travels to a different point in the future.

Is TV Content Allowed?
Certainly! Just make sure that it's as consistent with the spirit of the challenge as the movies you might watch. We used to allow anything on The History Channel carte blanche but with the proliferation of reality TV shows there, try to remember that no matter how dangerous driving a semi across ice is, it isn't "historical"...yet!

Counting
Many of the films at the heart of this challenge have considerable run times, so even though there's always a sort of de facto goal of hitting 100 movies watched, it's not really expected here. We'd much rather you take this opportunity to finally see Lawrence of Arabia than to squeeze in two shorter films.

Since there are no prizes for this challenge, feel free to count using whichever method best suits you. The standard is that 2 TV broadcast hours or short films is equivalent to 1 movie. Some members prefer to count each episode or short as a single entry. Others tally their cumulative viewing time. Whatever floats your boat. It's your list!

Why Aren't Documentaries on the Checklist?
It's up to each participant to decide what mix of dramatizations and documentaries best suits him or her. If you want to watch documentaries exclusively, you're welcome to do that. If you don't want to watch any, that's fine, too. Some checkmarks will be easier to attain with docs, though!

Hey, What About...?
Travis is the usual host and his BA was earned in history, but he hasn't seen every movie ever made and doesn't have an encyclopedic knowledge of every historical figure, event and period. Regarding specific films, he would suggest--and this goes for any questions--that you ask about a specific film in the discussion thread and see what feedback you get from others who have seen it. If you don't get anything helpful, his rule of thumb is that if you feel that you have a sufficient reason to believe that it's an appropriate selection then go ahead and watch it. If it turns out not to really fit the nature of this challenge, still count it as a viewing but please share your thoughts with us.

CHECKLIST
Spoiler:
GENERAL
WHEN
Watch a film that takes place during five different centuries prior to the 20th Century (Note Century of setting):
--- Movie 1 (Century)
--- Movie 2 (Century)
--- Movie 3 (Century)
--- Movie 4 (Century)
--- Movie 5 (Century)

WHERE
Watch 5 movies about historical events of different countries (Note Country of setting).
--- Movie 1 (Country)
--- Movie 2 (Country)
--- Movie 3 (Country)
--- Movie 4 (Country)
--- Movie 5 (Country)

WHO _/10
Watch at least five of the ten following subcategories:

FOLKLORE & FAITH
--- Film about prehistory
--- Film about the mythology of Antiquity (i.e., Greek gods, dramatization of Homeric poems, etc.)
--- Film about religious history (based on either recorded historical events or fables arising from Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, etc.)
--- Film about a folk hero
--- Film about either the Humanities (fine arts) or Sports figure/event

HEY, THEY WERE THERE, TOO!: A LOOK AT MARGINALIZED PEOPLES
(Focus on prominent figures from history and/or depictions of their minority group's oppression, etc.)
--- Film about Women's History
--- Film about Race Relations
--- Film about the LGBTQ Community
--- Film about Religious Minority
--- Film about Immigrants

TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY
--- Watch at least two movies about the same person/event where each movie is from a different perspective (1/2)
--- Watch at least two movies about the same person/event where each movie is from a different perspective (2/2)

WAR _/10
Watch at least five of the following ten War subcategories:

--- Anti-War film
--- Military Comedy
--- Prisoner of War/Escape film
--- Resistance Movement/Civilians film
--- Submarine film
--- War Spy
--- War film that was produced *during* that war
--- Film about war criminals
--- Film about veterans after the war (framing a "flashback" film doesn't count, so no Saving Private Ryan for this one)
--- Wartime propaganda film OR a film produced by the military

WESTERN _/10
Watch at least five of these ten Western subcategories:

--- The Union Pacific story. (The plot concerns construction of a railroad, a telegraph line, or some other type of modern technology or transportation.) Wagon train stories probably fall into this category.
--- The ranch story. (The plot concerns threats to the ranch from rustlers or large landowners attempting to force out the proper owners.)
--- The empire story. (The plot might involve building up a ranch empire or an oil empire from scratch, a classic rags-to-riches plot.)
--- The revenge story. (The plot often involves an elaborate chase and pursuit, but it may also include elements of the classic mystery story.)
--- The cavalry and Indian story. (The plot revolves around taming the wilderness for white settlers.)
--- The outlaw story. (The outlaw gangs dominate the action.)
--- The marshal story. (The lawman and his challenges drive the plot.)
--- "Export Western" - a Western not actually set in America. There have been numerous Westerns set in Australia, for instance. Samurai films could count for this, too, given the relationship between the two genres.
--- Western movie with a direct connection to a TV show, since Westerns were part of TV's golden age before the Space Generation
--- Neo-Western (i.e., a Western set in more contemporary times, to demonstrate the genre is still alive)

ZEITGEIST WILD CARDS
Because an argument can be made that some movies which fall outside the "obvious" scope of our challenge really are consistent with its spirit, you're permitted to watch and check off up to three optional movies of your choice.
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #1
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #2
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #3

2016 Historical Appreciation Challenge

2010 = 37 items
2011 = 15 items
2012 = 26 items
2013 = 7 items
2014: did not participate
2015 = 30 items

* = First time viewing
DVDs unless otherwise noted

May 31
01. Pearl Harbor: The View From Japan (1994)*
Time: 1938-1945 Interesting Japanese made documentary is an overview of much of the war in the Pacific focusing on The Japanese Combined Fleet which existed from before Pearl Harbor to April 7, 1945 when the battleship Yamato was sunk. Gives high marks to Admiral Yamamoto for realizing the importance of air power in naval warfare, having a realistic view of war with the United States, and developing innovative strategies which were often ignored by higher ups. 6/10

June 03
02. The Iron Sheriff (1957)* TV
Time: Old west Plot: An express wagon is robbed and the driver is killed. All the evidence points towards the sheriff's son as the guilty party. Part courtroom drama and part mystery with decent performances. 5.5/10

June 04
03. The Tall T (1957)* (The Films of Budd Boetticher)
Time: Old west Plot: A newly wed couple and a ranch owner are kidnapped by three outlaws who find out that the woman is the daughter of a wealthy mine owner and then decide to demand a ransom for her safe return. Gritty and tense with a great cast (Randolph Scott, Richard Boone, a young Henry Silva, and Maureen O'Sullivan). Boone is especially good as an outlaw who doesn't regret his ways but also wants more out of life. 7/10
04. Budd Boetticher: A Man Can Do That (2005)* (on The Tall T disk)
Very good feature length documentary about the life and works of Budd Boetticher includes interviews with Clint Eastwood, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Stack, Peter Bogdanovic, Boetticher and others. I think this was made for TCM.

June 11
05. Along the Rio Grande (1941)* (WB Archive Tim Holt Western Classics Collection Vol. 1)
Time: Old west Plot: Three ranch hands pretend to be outlaws so they can infiltrate a gang hiding in Mexico. Stars: Tim Holt, Robert Fiske 5/10
06. Decision At Sundown (1957)* (The Films of Budd Boetticher)
Time: Not long after the Civil War Plot: A man, poisoned by the desire for revenge, finally tracks down the man who he blames for his wife's death. Interesting story, plays with several western conventions which results in a satisfying but somewhat dismal conclusion. Stars: Randolph Scott, John Carroll, Noah Beery Jr. 6.5/10

June 18
07. The Bandit Trail (1941)* (WB Archive Tim Holt Western Classics Collection Vol. 1)
Time: Old west Plot: A young man gets involved with a bank robbery due to a hot headed uncle but he soon sees the error of his ways. Morris Ankrum plays a rough and tumble outlaw. Stupid comic relief doesn't detract too much. Stars: Tim Holt, Lee (Lasses) White 5/10
08. New Mexico (1951)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 7)
Time: 1860, 1865 Plot: A small calvary troop which is trying to stop a war with Indians caused by corrupt government officials finds itself besieged on a high plateau. Exciting. Stars: Lew Ayres, Andy Devine 6/10
09. Buchanan Rides Alone (1958)* (The Films of Budd Boetticher)
Time: Old west Plot: A drifter is accused of murder and gets involved with local politics in a corrupt border town. Good acting and directing but I had some problems with the story. Stars: Randolph Scott, Craig Stevens 6/10

June 23
10. Planet Earth (2006) Episode 5: Deserts and Episode 6: Ice Worlds* Blu-ray

June 25
11. Westbound (1959)* (WB Archive Collection)
Time: 1864 Plot: A union cavalry captain is sent to the Colorado territory to set up daily stage runs to transport gold from California. Southern sympathizers try to stop him. Solid but nothing extraordinary. Stars: Randolph Scott, Karen Steele, Andrew Duggan 6/10
12. Apache Rifles (1964)*
Time: 1879 Plot: A cavalry office with a grudge against Indians tries to keep the peace with Apaches on a reservation but the greed of white men keeps getting in the way. Good story, although the end is overly optimistic, and director Willaim Witney keeps things moving. Stars: Audie Murphy, Michael Dante 6.5/10
13. Renegade Girl (1946)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 7)
Time: 1864-1865 Plot: A woman associated with Quantrill's Raiders during the Civil War, joins an outlaw gang in order to get revenge on the renegade Indian who killed her entire family. Ann Savage is OK in this mediocre film. Stars: Ann Savage, Alan Curtis 4.5/10

June 26
14. Japan's Longest Day (1967)*
Time: July-Aug. 1945 Plot: Japanese epic length docudrama focuses on Aug. 14-15, 1945, the twenty-four hours leading up to Emperor Hirohitos's announcement of Japan's surrender. The first part concerns the political maneuvering around polishing the emperor's announcement and lays the groundwork for what follows. Things get very exciting and somewhat bloody when attention shifts to a coup attempt by mid-level officers of the army. Quick research indicates what is portrayed is accurate. Stars: Toshiro Mifune, Chisu Ryu 7.5/10

June 27
15. Yamato (2005)*
Time: Mostly 1944 - 1945 Plot: The story of the last year of the battleship Yamato told in flashbacks about a group of cadets who joined the ship in 1944 and the three "old timers" who were their immediate superiors. The framing story involves the adopted daughter of one of the old timers who wants to visit the spot where the Yamato was sunk. Good film with a very spectacular and bloody final battle but also quite sentimental in many ways. The end of the film is moving when we discover the reason the daughter wanted to be taken to that spot. Stars:[/color] Takashi Sorimachi, Shindou Nakamura, Kyoka Suzuki 7/10

June 29
16. Planet Earth (2006) Episode 7: Great Plains* and Episode 8: Jungles* Blu-ray

WESTERN _/10
Watch at least five of these ten Western subcategories:

--- The Union Pacific story. (The plot concerns construction of a railroad, a telegraph line, or some other type of modern technology or transportation.) Wagon train stories probably fall into this category.
-X- The ranch story. THE MAN FROM LARAMIE
--- The empire story. (The plot might involve building up a ranch empire or an oil empire from scratch, a classic rags-to-riches plot.)
-X- The revenge story. THE DEADLY TRACKERS
-X- The cavalry and Indian story. GERONIMO: AN AMERICAN LEGEND
-X- The outlaw story. (The outlaw gangs dominate the action.) I SHOT JESSE JAMES
-X- Neo-Western BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

ZEITGEIST WILD CARDS
Because an argument can be made that some movies which fall outside the "obvious" scope of our challenge really are consistent with its spirit, you're permitted to watch and check off up to three optional movies of your choice.
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #1
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #2
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #3

XXX The Outlaw Josey Wales Nineteenth century
--- Movie 5 (Century)

WHERE

XXX Braveheart Scotland
XXX Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto Japan
XXX Cobra Verde Brazil

WHO _/10
Watch at least five of the ten following subcategories:

FOLKLORE & FAITH
--- Film about prehistory
--- Film about the mythology of Antiquity (i.e., Greek gods, dramatization of Homeric poems, etc.)
XXX Film about religious history (based on either recorded historical events or fables arising from Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, etc.) The Last Temptation of Christ
XXX Film about a folk hero Braveheart
XXX Film about either the Humanities (fine arts) or Sports figure/event Jimi Hendrix: Hear My Train a Comin'

HEY, THEY WERE THERE, TOO!: A LOOK AT MARGINALIZED PEOPLES
(Focus on prominent figures from history and/or depictions of their minority group's oppression, etc.)
--- Film about Women's History
--- Film about Race Relations
--- Film about the LGBTQ Community
--- Film about Religious Minority
--- Film about Immigrants

TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY
--- Watch at least two movies about the same person/event where each movie is from a different perspective (1/2)
--- Watch at least two movies about the same person/event where each movie is from a different perspective (2/2)

WAR _/10
Watch at least five of the following ten War subcategories:

XXX Anti-War film Platoon
--- Military Comedy
--- Prisoner of War/Escape film
--- Resistance Movement/Civilians film
--- Submarine film
--- War Spy
XXX War film that was produced *during* that war To Have and Have Not
--- Film about war criminals

XXX The outlaw story. (The outlaw gangs dominate the action.) The Outlaw Josey Wales
XXX The marshal story. (The lawman and his challenges drive the plot.) My Darling Clementine
XXX "Export Western" - a Western not actually set in America. There have been numerous Westerns set in Australia, for instance. Samurai films could count for this, too, given the relationship between the two genres. Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto
XXX Western movie with a direct connection to a TV show, since Westerns were part of TV's golden age before the Space Generation The Magnificent Seven
XXX Neo-Western (i.e., a Western set in more contemporary times, to demonstrate the genre is still alive) Lone Wolf McQuade

ZEITGEIST WILD CARDS
Because an argument can be made that some movies which fall outside the "obvious" scope of our challenge really are consistent with its spirit, you're permitted to watch and check off up to three optional movies of your choice.
XXX The Conjuring 2
XXX Band of Outsiders
XXX The Nice Guys

Re: The Seventh Annual Historical Appreciation Challenge List Thread - June 2016

2016 Historical Appreciation Challenge

June 2
1. Roots Part 1--The new iteration of Alex Haley's saga is well made and contains more historical depth than the original.
2. Roots Part 2
3. Roots Part 3

June 3
4. Roots Part 4

June 7

5. Barbarians Rising S1E1: Hannibal crosses the Alps and a rebellion in Lusitania, today's Portugal

June 8
6. Pride (2014). In 1984, a group of lesbian and gay activists formed a group to collect money to support striking miners in Wales.

June 9
7. Old South/ New South (2014). A doc that examines the reality of slavery vs the mythology of Gone With the Wind
8. Hail Caesar--Even lesser Coen Brothers is still pretty good. The recreation of 50s Hollywood is lush and perfectly rendered.
9. Roots: A History Revealed--The history of slavery and its depiction on the show.

June 10
10. The Secret Life of . . . Alexander the Great (2012)

June 11
11. Six By Sondheim (2013)--A living Broadway legend talks about his life and work.
12. Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill (2016)-- The amazing Audra McDonald stars in a one-woman show as the iconic jazz singer Billie Holiday.
13. Everest (2015)-- Has it really been 20 years since the disastrous 1996 climbing season on Everest?

June 13
14. Barbarians Rising S1E2: Spartacus

June 14
15. The Secret Life of . . . Napoleon (2012)
16. Alexander Hamilton (1931)--Needs more hip hop.

June 15
17. The Secret Life of . . . the Borgias (2012)

June 16
18. O.J. Made in America Part 1
19. O.J. Made in America Part 2
20. The Secret Life of . . . Caligula (2012)

June 17
21. O.J. Made in America Part 3
22. O.J. Made in America Part 4
23. O.J. Made in America Part 5

June 20
24. They Died With Their Boots On (1941)--a ridiculously sanitized bio of George Armstrong Custer, starring Errol Flynn. Despite the historical inaccuracies, this movie is still a lot of fun.
25. The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939). More Error Flynn with a dyspeptic Bette Davis as the Virgin Queen (that's her story and she's sticking to it)

June 21
26. All Things Must Pass (2015). A fascinating doc on the rise and fall of Tower Records.
27. Barbarians Rising S1E3: Arminius wiping out Varus's legions, Boudicca's rebellion, and the Goths destroying Roman legions at the Battle of Adrianople in 378, opening up the path to barbarian invasions of Europe and the fall of the Roman Empire in the West

June 22
28. The Trials of Oscar Wilde (1960). Peter Finch is excellent as poor doomed Oscar Wilde in this surprisingly sympathetic depiction of Wilde's trial and conviction for homosexuality.
29. The Secret Life of . . . Mata Hari (2012)
30. A Man for All Seasons (1966). More of a hagiography than a biography, A Man for All Seasons shows Thomas More in an extremely generous light as he goes to his death for refusing to accept the Act of Supremacy that divorced England from the Catholic Church.

June 23
31. The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade (1967). a multi-leveled masterpiece--the inmates of an insane asylum during the Napoleonic era performs a play about he French Revolution, punctuated by satirical musical interludes and philosophical dialogues between Sade and the madman playing Marat.
32. Tab Hunter Confidential (2015). Tab discusses his life as a closeted movie star in the 1950s.
33. The Last Man on the Moon (2015). Eugene Cernan looks back on his career in the space program. Fascinating profile of an amazing life.

June 24
34. The Walk (2015). I remember seeing the news photo of Philippe Petit's walk between the Twin Towers back in 1974 when I was a kid. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is terrific as Petit planning his coup de theatre, and the FX are fantastic.

June 25
35. The Queen (2006).Helen Mirren's performance as Queen Elizabeth II coming to grips with the changes in British society in the wake of Diana's death is amazing; I wish I had gotten the chance to see her play Her Majesty on stage in The Audience.
36. The Secret Life of . . . the Marquis de Sade (2012)
37. The Sting (1974). 40+ years, later, this grifter classic still rewards.

June 27
38. The Comancheros (1961).Very entertaining late-period John Wayne Western with a terrific cast.
39. Barbarians Rising S1E4: The Sack of Rome, the Hun invasion, and the Western Empire falls to the barbarian tribes, including the bloody conquests of the Vandals

June 28
40. Shenandoah (1965). Jimmy Stewart plays the patriarch of a large Virginia family who wants to stay out of the Civil War. Events overtake him and he has to get in the fight. The Cinemascope photography gives Shenandoah the feel of an epic.

June 29
41. Song of the South (1946). On the one hand, SotS is a classic Disney film that pioneers the blend of live-action and animation with a catchy score, including the Oscar-winning "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah", and on the other its whitewashing of slavery and use of plantation dialect is appallingly racist.
42. Sahara (1943). Stirring action movie as Bogie commands a tank crew who are trying to outmaneuver the Germans in North Africa.

June 30
42. Start the Revolution Without Me (1970). You don't find too many comedies about the French Revolution. Gene Wilder and Donald Sutherland star as two sets of twins, one aristocratic the other peasant who get involved in a comedy of errors.
43. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2015). The pleasure of the book was the mashup of Jane Austen's comedy of manners and bloody zombie action. The film doesn't quite capture the delicate Regency romance or the gory zombie action, and it really missed some opportunities to hit both well, but overall it was entertaining.
44. Atlantis: The Lost Continent. (1961). For some reason, MGM cut the budget for this movie, even after the wild success of Pal's previous film, The Time Machine. Consequently, it looks really cheap, and is padded with stock footage from other MGM pictures. If Pal could have had another pass at the script and a decent budget, this could have been a classic.
