Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 11th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

I watched A Serbian Film the other night and it was the uncut version. Anyway, never watched it before and wanted to see what the controversy was about.

Yes, I found a couple of parts repulsive but the whole movie played more like an extremely black comedy than a real life drama. Some scenes were so ludicrous and over the top that I actually laughed at some parts where I probably shouldn't have. It was still gross but dumb as well. My rating was **1/2 out of *****. What do some of you think if you have seen it?

And yes, I am already watching some horror. It is not my mainstay for September but I was ready to start!

And stay far, far away from Bikini Swamp Girl Massacre. I watched so you wouldn't have to. Great title. Horrible movie.

lol, I just thought, since usually we are always pushing to the last few days to finalize everything, I always thought the thread list went up on like the 10th-15th.

Halloween should be a national holiday.

Haha. It's streaming on Amazon Prime. Watch at your own risk.

But then of course come back to discuss your thoughts on it!

Spider, did you really have any hope that it'd be any good?

Trevor...you should know better.

Rule of thumb, gentlemen: The more outrageous the title, the worse the movie. Tattoo it on your forearm if you're prone to forget it. If the title has no class, then there's very little hope of the movie itself having any.

There's a reason that, say, The Fly isn't called The Fly with the Screaming Human Head!...and that reason is called "class."

Well, I was expecting bad but not as bad as it actually was. What really sucked was the lack of nudity. A movie like that cries out for it and there was barely any.

It honestly played like a Troma film but on a cheaper budget. Yes...I said cheaper budget.

So no one has any thoughts on "A Serbian Film?"

Well, as long as you were EXPECTING bad....

I bought A Serbian Film about a year ago and have never worked up the courage and/or desire to watch it. Maybe I'll try to watch it during the Challenge this year.

I know, but especially with horror, sometimes films can be so bad they're good. And I'm more forgiving by nature to my favorite genre. And sometimes I just want to channel my inner MST3K and bash horrible movies as I watch them.

Didn't see the post that it was on Prime, so when I didn't find it on Netflix watched Zombeavers instead. Well, started it, will comment if I ever finish it.

It is a Troma film, isn't it? I thought I saw the Troma logo when I looked it up last night.

I was tempted to watch it last night, but I hate to not get "credit" for it.

Zombeavers has been in the Netflix queue for awhile. I'll definitely be watching it (and other crap) in October.

Zombeavers is a lot of fun. I watched it a couple of months ago.

May Bikini Swamp Girl Massacre was a Troma film. It certainly felt like Troma...but cheaper. I must have missed the logo. I just thought with a title like that, that it would a least be a little fun.

As far as credit goes, I am logging my horror watching as "negatives" as I have too much stuff to watch to stuff into one month.

I think that's true but with a lot of these bad horror films coming out recently, they know they're bad to begin with and have fun with it. Who doesn't have fun? The viewer. I was so disappointed with Citizen Toxie because of this. It's like they forgot what made him popular in the first place and now he's the Jar Jar Binks of Troma.

The bad films that end up being fun to watch are the ones where they put the effort into making something good but it just doesn't work out. Sure there's exceptions that I can't think of. I've just seen way to many because of a backlog to know that if it's a cool title, the title is the only good thing about it and the makers of the film need to learn about editing, use of music, and sound levels.

I can get over the fact that it's going to end up taking place outside and/or in someone's house and/or a warehouse where one of the crew knows a manager and got permission to film there at night. A decent enough film can get away with things like that.

Yeah, it was a Troma movie. I don't know how you could've missed the "Lloyd Kaufman Presents" and the "A Troma Team Release" title cards at the beginning. I mean, I can understand falling asleep during that film, but not during the first 15 seconds.

Yes, I watched it. All of it. It was really bad, but, sadly, I have seen worse. Usually bad acting doesn't bother me much, but that thing was so heavy with dialogue (and so very little action) that it really became hard to slug through.

It's like the director had never watched a low-budget film before.

Despite never seeing a Troma film, a friend insisted that I read Kaufman's All I Need To Know About FILMMAKING I Learned From THE TOXIC AVENGER: The Shocking True Story of Troma Studios. So far I've been enjoying it. Perhaps this is the year I rectify this cinematic blindspot.

A Serbian Film has been on my list but I prefer to watch an uncensored copy if I can find one. As far as "extreme" horror goes I enjoyed Nekromantik last year, great mix of gross out and arthouse.

Well said. It's really obnoxious when low budget films try to capitalize on intentionally being "bad." In rare cases it works (like Grindhouse, Rubber, and even some Troma) but being too full of self aware winks throughout the show can be tiresome. It's a shame that so many low budget movies forgo even trying to make a serious film and instead play for "laughs" or meta references (hello Sharknado, Rob Zombie). Style over substance is fine but method is important - I think the only way intentionally "bad" movies work is if they can go for the gusto and be so over the top with kinetic gore/nudity/etc that they are at least fun on a 'pornographic' level (like the epic exploding hookers in Frankenhooker).

I watched A Serbian Film recently. It's not as extreme as I was led to believe. Visually it's not to disturbing. To me Last House on the Left was more disturbing/depressing.

I watched the "uncut" version on Youtube. Wasn't the greatest quality but it was just as good as DVD quality. Again, I thought more of it as a very dark comedy than a realistic, disturbing movie. It is watchable though I wouldn't revisit very often if at all. It is kind of like the Human Centipede movies. One time goes a VERY long way.

As far as the quote I bolded, I watched Piranha (2010) last night and that movie is just exactly what you defined. I had forgotten some of the extreme kills that are just as disgusting as they are funny. Very enjoyable movie. I don't care what anyone says.

Maybe it will end up being weak but I'm looking forward to checking out Zombeavers next month myself; it looks tongue in cheek and crazy enough that it might be good despite the too obvious shallow humor title.

Those Human Centipede movies are awful - painfully stretching out a thin gimmick even if moments of part II were clever.

Piranha is a fun move with an energetic party atmosphere and those kills... Alexandre Aja is overlooked as a film maker probably because he does so many remakes (personally Horns was competent but disappointing from him).
