Re: The Official 8th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
I finalized my list today. I ended up watching over 130 hours for 82 movies. I had a great time and saw a lot of really good movies, a whole bunch I had never heard of before. The best by far was Interstellar but I also saw a movie called Predestination that was almost as good. I can find something good in most any movie so I was very pleased with the month. Now it's on to the animation checklist for a change of pace. I'm betting I'll be watching a lot on YouTube to check off a large part of this.

I missed last year's final season of Warehouse 13 and I saw the final episode - man oh man, it was like losing friends - I got rather emotional.

Finished up with a double feature of Spielberg's War of the Worlds and Nolan's Interstellar, two film I haven't seen since I saw them in theaters. Both are spectacular and connected by the theme of deadbeat dads who eventually make good.
Family and friend obligations kept me from reaching 100 entries, but I made it to 75! This month I watched 48 films (26 FTVs), 1 complete serial, and 72 television episodes (64 FTVs). I was able to finish the first season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the second season of The Adventures of Superman. I was also able to watch all of the Harry Potter films. While I wish I could have gotten to more, I'm proud of my progress!
Best FTVs
--- Dune
--- Chappie
--- Dark City
Worst FTVs
--- Renaissance
--- The Phantom Planet
--- Killers from Outer Space
Best Overall: the spectacular, layered, nuanced Cloud Atlas
Worst Overall: the illogical, misdirected Star Wars prequels

Thanks for running a great challenge LJG. I was going through a tough time, and you did a great job.

Re: The Official 8th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
Well, I closed out my viewing with three iconic figures from Japanese sci-fi: Godzilla, Gamera, and Astro Boy.
GODZILLA VS. MONSTER ZERO (1965) is one of my favorite G films from the '60s, chiefly because it cast American star Nick Adams and brought him to Japan for the shoot. His character has an interracial--and interplanetary--romance with the beautiful Kumi Mizuno, who plays an alien disguised as a Japanese woman. The alien intrigue plot is interesting and complicated enough that it takes lots of screen time away from Godzilla, Rodan and King Ghidorah. And what screen time there is is often stock footage from earlier movies. (I recognized a shot from MOTHRA.)
GAMERA VS. GYAOS (1967) is a very good one in that series and is still in the serious vein, despite having a child hero (he's alone in this, with no other kids on hand), before the series got really over-the-top with Boy Scouts fighting brain-eating alien women in one of the subsequent ones.
One of the Astro Boy episodes I watched, "The Moon Monsters," is the only episode in that (1963-67) series that was originally filmed in color. It was released in color theatrically in Japan and I have a VHS copy of it, in Japanese only. So I played the VHS on one TV set and the English-dubbed DVD on another, so I could watch it in color and hear the English soundtrack. (It was shown only in b&w in the U.S.) Having been filmed in 1963, the color episode was the first color animation made for Japanese TV.
I only wish there'd been some overlap between the Sci-Fi and Animation Challenges so I could have counted the Astro Boy eps. in both.

I totally misread that, so thanks. But I'm glad I managed to squeeze in both GODZILLA VS. MONSTER ZERO and GAMERA VS. GYAOS before the challenge was over.

I was going to pick winners today for the prizes, but I didn't think to let people have a little more time to finalize their lists. I'll wait until Monday just to give people a little more time to update their lists if they need to.
Looks like there were a lot of good watches this month. Some of your lists are really impressive! I was just pleased to get in at least one qualifying watch per day.

Sci-fi/Fantasy and animation are my favorite types as well. I can always watch a ton without burning out or at least it's a lot harder!

That's good. It's always good to have a stress relief or something that takes your mind off things. Movies has always been a go to for me as well. (Well, maybe a bit of video games thrown in as a kid, but now, it's movies and mindless tv...)

The winners have been chosen! Please keep an eye out on your inbox for further instructions, but basically, please give me a list of which prize lot you would like in which order. The sooner you get me this list, the more likely you are to get your first choice!
Our sponsor has requested that winners do live in the United States. Please let me know if you don't. Thank you!
The winners have until Friday noon central time to get me their list, after that, I will award it to the next person in my list. I used a random number generator to pick the winners.
Last thing: If you're a winner, I do not need your address, you can send it directly to GoldenWheels. I can forward it to him as well, but either way works.
Prize recap:
1. Alien Outpost BR and Star Trek: Enterprise S. 1
2. The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec, J.R.R. Tolkien: Master of the Rings and Lord of the Rings the Animated Classic.
3. Man with the Screaming Brain, Giorgio Moroder Presents Metropolis and the book, 101 Sci-Fi Movies to See Before You Die
4. Science Fiction Theatre Complete Series
5. Thunderbirds Complete Series
Provided by HamiltonBooks! Thanks!
*Please note: Winners do have to be living in the United States to be eligible for prizes.

Thanks for the prize, LJG and GoldenWheels! I've been meaning to finally watch the only ST I haven't seen more than a few episodes of.
I might've gone for pack 2 had I not owned all of those already. Good selection.

Thank you! I'm excited to get my prize pack.
Although the challenge is over, I'm still watching Cowboy Bebop episodes. I don't know why I took this long to discover it. My wife also requested to binge watch season two of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. so I'll be going through that as well.

Thanks to everyone involved in keeping the challenges going! I always love sci-fi month.
Finishing my Babylon 5 rewatch now. Also picked up Orphan Black S3 today. Sci-fi stays strong all year for me.
Congrats to the prize winners and thanks to Goldenwheels for graciously donating the prizes!
