The Man with the Golden Doujinshi

I thought the first one was ok at best and didn't care much more for any sequels. I know I've had to sit through the second one a few times and I've seen the third at least once but it was completely forgettable. I recall people saying the 4th was good but based on the imdb rating, that sounds like a vocal minority.

If you like this, check out Barefoot Gen. It's not as highly rated but I liked it too.

A Bullet for a Stranger was pretty average. I choose it because I was working on a top 50 Spaghetti Westerns list at icheckmovies.com and it had bumped another movie off the list. It also didn't help that my copy had some bad distortion in the audio but I don't think better audio would have made it any more interesting. It was one of those films where it didn't follow the two sets of heroes all that well and should have focused on one or the other.

After putting it off for over a week, I finally sat down and watched Grave of the Fireflies. The film earns its reputation as the ultimate tearjerker, and I found myself crying a lot. (The last time I lost it that hard was watching Selma.) The story and the animation are both beautiful and moving. The characters really felt like children working through horrific circumstances with childish logic and naivete. I thought the juxtaposition of those directly effected by war and those not was shocking. The main characters' aunt cannot really understand what they are going through and can only think of the war through the lens of food rations.

Anyway, I'm glad that I finally watched it. Hopefully the next film won't reduce me to tears!

The Housemaid, The Housemaid! You're going to watch The Housemaid! I watched this early this year and want to get your opinion.

On my own list, I've replaced Grave of the Fireflies with Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise. I've been meaning to see it for quite some time. Apparently, part of it was filmed in a cheap hotel my parents stopped at during their Honeymoon road trip.

With history like that don't put it off any longer!

Gold Diggers of 1937 was a pleasant diversion. Who knew there's a "The Life Insurance Song" with lines like: "You'll get pie in the sky when you die, die, die if you buy, buy, buy Life Insurance" and "You'll be in gravy when you're in the grave"! Hilarious! For a minute I felt like I was watching a Mel Brooks film! In spite of being cast alongside Dick Powell in *10* musicals Joan Blondell does *not* sing but "talks" her lyrics! I don't know if I've ever heard her sing but that was odd. Normally they'll just use someone else to sing for you if you can't do it (Like Zsa Zsa Gabor in Moulin Rouge who I think was dubbed and didn't sing herself). Overall it's a fairly cliche film, but may not have been in 1936. It was still enjoyable in spite of essentially knowing how it'd all work out in the end. The flag sequence with the girls standing on blacked out pilars is quite interesting.

Prizzi's Honor (1985). It's the only one I've seen on the list.

So I watched, Prisoners today and it was very good. The acting is top notch and the characters are portrayed realistically for the most part. It's an intelligent film that probably demands to be seen more than once. I missed a bunch of stuff that I ended up reading up on at the imdb board.

There were several from your list I wanted to pick, but had to go with Alien.

I managed to watch Avatar tonight and enjoyed it very much. I think the reason it sat in my unwatched pile for so long is the length. For some reason, when I pick a movie to watch, I rarely pick one longer than 2 hours much less one that is longer than 2 1/2 hours.

The Housemaid was easily one of the best films I've seen this year. I got a glimpse from comments about it that the ending was unexpected but it still caught me off guard.

I choose Scream 4 for you for one because it's the only movie on your list that I have heard of! The Scream films are different from a lot of other horror films/franchises in that they don't try to take themselves too seriously. Have fun with this one! It's not as good as number 1 but still a fun ride!

I tried to watch Blade Runner but I could not for the life of me get into it. I don't know if it was because I was tired from a long day at work or what but I just couldn't stay engaged in the story. I'm counting it as watched and taking it off the list but I will leave it on the DVR for another day to see if I like it more.

Have you seen any of the sequels yet?

As for Scream 4, I'm not big on the whole meta horror thing, this isn't something I'd watch again. I thought it was dull and went on too long but I thought it was better than any of the sequals, even though that isn't saying much. Having a knife go into and out of people sure is noisy. I think part of why I didn't care for the series is because I was raised on 70s and 80s horror and Scream comes off as a more serious horror parody than a real horror film. There's no real terror in them, for me at least. I can't believe this is the start of a new trilogy unless the reason is that they're really lazy in coming up with something that isn't just horror movie rules over and over.

I thought my list was obscure, but Scream 4 was the last one on your list I'd heard of. But it's hard to go wrong with a Western, so let's say Ambush Valley.

I liked watching Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. I'd seen the Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend number, of course (and Madonna's tribute), but it was even longer and more elaborate than I realized, with a feel similar to Singin' in the Rain's Broadway Melody number. The film also had a strong similarity to White Christmas, I guess with the buddy angle, singing each other's number, etc. I was a little disappointed with the ditzy Marilyn persona. I know the character says she just does it for men (which doesn't make it right), but it kind of reinforces many people's image of Marilyn, which is probably based on just a few clips. I don't know a ton about her myself other than a few films and the My Weekend with Marilyn feature, but I know she's taken on meatier roles than what we're accustomed to seeing.

I only know a little about a couple of mine. Warrior came out within the last few years and I can recognize the cover.

Threads was some 80s Soviet invasion film with nukes that freaked out and scared a bunch of people in England when it aired on BBC. I saw some shows talking about the reality of it that aired shortly after it was shown, over on youtube, so I might check some of those out when Threads get's picked.

I've seen it twice. And have come to the conclusion that you have. I hated it the first time I saw it. Well the second time I liked the second half of the film a lot more than the first half. The first half nearly put me to sleep though for some reason. I just find it overrated and will probably just watch it for challenge purposes. The Rutger Hauer character is probably the best thing in the film aside from the cinematography.
I haven't seen any of these but this is the only film on the list that I own, so I picked it.

I watched Alien today and found it a lot more interesting than Alien II which I saw on DVD a few years ago. There's a lot more suspense in this one and there's are interesting little side plots (i.e. Ripley challenging the predominately male authority of the ship and human survival vs scientific discovery) that make the film multi dimensional.

I watched Back To The Future this morning and again am finally glad I got around to it. Being a movie fan my whole life I can't believe this was my first viewing of it. I really enjoyed Fox's and Lloyd's performances and can't wait to add the other two onto my list at a later point!

Threads was doom and gloom. While it seemed pretty realistic with how a nuclear war could go down, and the decade that follows, I was getting bored by the end. I can see why people were getting upset about it at the time.

I was all set to say "What!?!?! You've not seen Night of the Living Dead!?!?!" when I see it's the remake and not the original. SO with *that* in mind I choose for you Mr. Vampire as it sounds like a incredibly fun film.

Once again I watch a film expecting more than what was delivered. A film I purchased mainly due to the lead actors, Prizzi's Honor was not bad but just not my thing. I know it's supposed to be a dark comedy, possibly a spoof of sorts, of the "Mafia" genre and maybe that's why I didn't get into it as much. I generally do not care for or watch "Mafia" movies. It's also possible that it's not really as funny as I was expecting. It *does* have a few nice twists and turns but frequently feels cliche' (but then it's a 30 year old film and may have been fresh in 85) - then it just ends rather abruptly. It also felt overly long and I kept checking the clock the last hour or so. I'm glad I've seen it but it'll not be high on the rewatch list.

You get La Cage Aux Folles but *only* if you watch in the original language with subtitles. If you'll not do that then it's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The first time I saw La Cage... I thought I was going to hurt myself laughing! I watched the dubbed version later and it's not nearly as funny but still better than the remake.

American Beauty... what can I say. I tend to dislike many "highly rated" films and this one was no exception. The blurb on the back of the case said it's "wickedly funny" but I disagree. There was *some* humor but nothing made me laugh out loud and it most certainly was *not* funny, much less wickedly so. I found it mostly depressing. It *did* have some good acting but the best thing about the film was the rock music used as a "score." Yet another acclaimed film that goes in my "probably won't watch again" pile.

I actually picked this one up and put it down several times over several months before I finally made the purchase because it won "Best Picture" for the year in which it was released. Since 1966 there have been only a dozen or so "Best Picture" winning films I've seen that I'd willingly give a second viewing. In the majority of those years I vastly prefer many of the losing films over the winners I've seen and have gotten to where I rarely bother watching the winning film unless it's of a genre I enjoy. I should have trusted my instincts.
