OOP Cleo from 5 to 7 Criterion - is my copy legit?
The CC of Cleo from 5 to 7 has been out of print for some time now and has been climbing in price steadily. So I decided to pick up a copy from Amazon marketplace, seeing as no new releases are on the horizon, and there was someone that had a copy for 15 bucks, new. That's half of what it's going for now. <--first red flag.
It arrived today and it looked fine, but when I opened it a strong smell of burned plastic hit me. I've heard that bootleg DVDs have this odor from the cheap quality discs they use. Everything looks legit and high quality, but I know that Criterions are bootlegged a lot so I wanted to be sure.
Does my copy look like yours? Is this a title known to be bootlegged?

I don't know how to help you regarding the bootleg possibility, but Cleo From 5 To 7 is not out of print.
It looks like you have the 1st release which is out of print, but that's because it was updated for the Agnes Varda set.

According to Michael's Movie Mayhem it's out of print and has been for a long time. There are 0 single releases of this title out there. + Those prices on Amazon + Ebay scream OOP to me.

Have you ever used a DVDR disc and had it make that smell? Bootleggers use the same discs that we can buy.

Mine is still factory sealed, otherwise I'd help you out. Usually, a good indication of bootlegs, to me at least, is the cover art. How does that look? Clear and crisp? Does the insert fit properly into the plastic slip on the case? Maybe that helps.
The disc itself looks pretty legit to me.

I can tell just from the label side that it's not a burned disc. It was made by Sony DADC.
