First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread

Sponsored by

| Challenge starts November 1st 12AM and ends December 1st at dawn |

RULES

Much like the genre I want this challenge to be fun and relaxed so use your best judgment on whether something qualifies. If you’re unsure about a titles genre classification IMDB and Allrovi are excellent references.

There is a separate list thread where you can post what you’ve watched. Be creative and have fun with it. My only request is you must number your list. It will greatly help me tally things up once the challenge is over. Feel free to add other info such as first time viewings, format, and personal goals. It’s not required, these are just things people generally include and I plan on tallying up once the challenge is over.

WHAT QUALIFIES
Movies = 1 entry

Tv shows count according to the length they aired on television (including commercials)
  • 30 minute shows = 1/4 entry
  • 1 hour show = 1/2 entry
  • 2 hour show = 1 entry
Stand up specials = 1 entry | If they are normal running tv shows featuring stand up then they count according to the tv show guidelines. EX. Premium Blend, while standup, would count as Ό entry since it’s a half hour reoccurring tv show.

Any combination of shorts totaling 90 minutes = 1 entry

My mind is on nothing but horror and Cardinals baseball at the moment, but come November I'm really looking forward to shifting gears. Thanks for starting this up, takingchase.

Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread

For the checklist, I like the direction recent Challenges have taken by giving choices on how to fulfill the item/sections. In the Criterion Challenge for example, there were checklist subsections for directors and themes. In directors, there was a list of the ten most represented directors and to complete the checklist you had to watch something by your choice of 5 of them. Criterion has a list of 30 or so themes, and one had to watch films from 5 different ones.

In the Horror Challenge, many of the director and actor checklist categories have two listed and you choose one.

We could extend this to many of the other subsections. Watch items from 10 of the 14 decades of film history. Watch items with 5 of the 10 or so Hays/MPAA ratings in history. Etc.

sitcoms
Saturday morning shows
foreign comedy
theatrical shorts
different decades
current comedy night (watch live TV that day)
spoofs
stand-up
romantic comedies

This wiki article has 19 types with good examples.

I do very much like the idea of checklists having choices. I'm definitely going to incorporate that as much as possible. I think I'm going to try and do that with as many subsections as I can without shortening the checklist too much.

More checklist suggestions:

Memorial theme - Films starring a deceased celebrity
Vacation theme - films taking place on a vacation (e.g. National Lampoon's Vacation, The Great Outdoors)
Work humor - films taking place at work (e.g. Office Space, Intern Academy)

I'm definitely interested in this, I'd probably actually work harder to complete the checklist if this challenge happened.

Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread

I'm absolutely down for this! I've pretty much abandoned my horror list sadly, I just haven't felt it for the past year or two

But I usually watch a lot of comedy, so I have a feeling I'll be able to do this one pretty well. And since most of the holiday related stuff I watch at the end of the month is comedy it will work out well.

Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread

Anime comedy:

Urusei Yatsura ("Those Obnoxious Aliens"), starring the infamous Lum (look her up)

Ranma 1/2 - about a teenaged male martial artist who turns into a girl when doused with cold water

Dragon Ball was a straight-out comedy (before it became Dragon Ball Z), esp. the earlier episodes. I showed one of the early eps., the one that introduced Oolong, in a college course I taught on anime (the class that night was comparing different versions of the Monkey King) and the kids laughed throughout.

Pokιmon - the movies tend to be more serious, but there's sufficient comedy in the regular episodes. I would also single out the Pikachu shorts that used to run with the movies.

Tenchi Muyo - some entries have more comedy than others. I'd focus on parts of the 26-episode Tenchi Universe myself. (The movies are dead serious.)

Shinichiro Watanabe directed both Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Both series have some very funny episodes alternating with very serious ones. If I can find the time to try to make specific suggestions, I will.

So many of the high school/college series, like His and Her Circumstances , Kimagure Orange Road and Love Hina, mix comedy and drama in equal measures throughout their running time that it's hard to determine if they're funny enough to include.

There's a lot more, but this is what I can come up with off the top of my head.

I don't know if there's enough interest to include anime comedy as a checklist item separate and apart from other animated comedy, but I just wanted to let you know it exists.

I haven't forgotten about this. I'm off Thursday and I'm hoping to completely update the OP and finish up the checklist and theme night. I apologize everything is taking so long, like I said originally this is just the worst timing but I'm still determined to get everything together and on the road with at least a little heads up time for people to plan for the month.

No worries takingchase. No one expects most of these other Challenges to start off as fancy as Chad makes the Horror Challenge.

On the theme nights, if you have a horror comedy you might want to make it on the first, to allow it to work with the Horror challenge during the ~7 hour cooperation window. And if anything was holiday related, put it near the end of the month for the Holiday Challenge.

Exactly. I think I set the bar as low as it goes for any of these challenges. I'd like to do more but mine run at one of the busiest times at work.

If you also wanted to get some sponsors, it's as easy as sending an email to a company and just explaining what you're doing and if they want to contribute anything.

Doh! I told takingchase I'd email/PM some of the usual suspects of sponsors here. I better do that now.

Edit to add: Perennial Challenge sponsor Hamilton Books (via DVDTalker Goldenwheels) is definitely in as a sponsor. If you have any specific ideas from their catalog let them now Takingchase. Here are some of their items: comedies, rom coms.

Thanks for your help Trevor. Since you got them on board whatever you think would be best works for me. I'm sure you have better ideas for it than I would.

Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread

Well, I had some setbacks. For starters, my wife planned a suprise day out on Thursday so I didn't get to finish what I wanted on this. I was getting ready to post the checklist and theme night tonight but my computer decided to crash after about an hours worth of work and my dumb ass never saved the txt file. So frustrating! Luckily I'm off tomorrow and will get the necessary stuff updated then. In the meantime I've finished the banner and uploaded that.
