Are there still nights with 2 hours of uninterrupted comedy programming? Because of commercial glut and "bugs" I gave up regular watching of live TV a few years ago and don't keep up any more.
Thursday nights on nbc are decent with the exception that you have to sit through the very horrible Whitney. Keep in mind it doesn't have to all be on the same night. For instance you could watch Parks and Recreation live all 4 times that it airs this month and use that. Mix and match, whatever. As long as you eventually equal out to one entry of live viewings you can use that as your bonus.

I've been catching up on 30 Rock again mainly because I never have more than a half hour free at a time. I really don't see all the praise for the show. Don't get me wrong it's a good show but I just don't see why people go crazy for it. I really don't have a drive to go back and rewatch episodes I've seen before which is something I usually do with most comedy tv shows I enjoy.

@ indy2003: much has been made that the movie 'Beginners' had comedic elements to it, IMDB includes 'comedy' but having seen it, I didn't find it funny in the least, I thought it was far more dramatic not to mention depressing and sad.

Do documentaries about creators of comedy qualify? Right now I'm watching an old tape of a show that offers a 2-part interview with animation genius Chuck Jones.

They absolutely count. I know I have a few lined up I've been meaning to watch.

I used the stand-up comedy theme night to revisit a classic I haven't seen in years: Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip. I'd forgotten how funny it was.

I'm doing a lot of revisiting...

I guess thinking about this Challenge entered my dream life last night. Very boring work-related dream with no laughing, but the name of the town that we all matter-of-factly used throughout the dream was Sgt Bilko.

Strangely, I don't think I've ever really seen the show, and definitely not the movie.

Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread

I asked a co-worker yesterday for a recommendation for last night's theme, and he mentioned Adam Sandler's "Going Overboard" - boy, did that suck! It was based on stand-up comedy on a cruise ship so I guess it still counts regardless of how BAD it was, though I do want the 1.5 hours of my life back.

Tonight should be a lot better with an AIRPLANE! Double Feature.

as my stand up comedy theme I watched Leslie (Will & Grace) Jordan's stand up schtick - it was insanely funny.

Would Will Hay be slapstick? Wikipedia says "The Goose Steps Out for Ealing (1942) was an effective anti-Nazi piece of slapstick" but this one isn't on Internet Archive. Is "Oh, Mr. Porter!" or "Windbag the Sailor" or "Where's That Fire?" slapstick? Or any of the other Will Hay comedies on IA?

Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread

I heard on another board that Ricky Hui died. He's a Hong Kong comic actor who often teamed with his brothers Michael and Sam back in the '70s and '80s. I had pulled a bunch of Hong Kong comedies out to watch for this challenge. Well, it turns out that one of them, PLAIN JANE TO THE RESCUE (1982), directed by John Woo(!) co-stars Ricky, so I'll watch that one. I've got other films with him (PRIVATE EYES, MR. VAMPIRE, TO HELL WITH THE DEVIL), but they're boxed up in my closet and I don't know when I'll have the energy to dig for them.

I'm sorry to hear of Ricky's death, which I learned of through your post.

I first encountered him in horror comedies, but didn't really get a sense of who he was until I began watching the classic Hui brothers comedies of the mid-1970s through mid-1980s. I got a better idea of what he could do from The Pilferer's Progress and Plain Jane To The Rescue, where he wasn't in Michael's shadow.

I thought I might be watching mostly Korean and Hong Kong comedy during this challenge, but at the last minute decided my main focus should be on Pedro Almodovar and American silent comedy. The only sure thing from Hong Kong in my plans is Who's the Woman, Who's the Man, since I watched He's a Woman, She's a Man recently.

What are some good suggestions for the "Made for TV" theme? Struggling to find something that fits.

I watched Animal House and Some Like It Hot for the first time yesterday, that alone makes this challenge a success for me

Here are a few I *highly* recommend:

The Rutles: All you need is Cash with Eric Idle as narrator plus Michael Palin, Neil Innes, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Bianca Jagger, Ron Wood, Mick Jagger, George Harrison, Paul Simon, and more. If you're any type of Beatles fan you should see this at least once. Highly entertaining. A Mocumentary as good as This is Spinal Tap. Written by Eric Idle and directed by Eric Idle and Gary Weis.

Evil Roy Slade (1972) with John Astin, Dick Shawn, Henry Gibson, Edie Adams, Dom DeLuise, Mickey Rooney, and more. Directed by Jerry Paris.

Blackadder's Christmas Carol (1988). It's Blackadder and Christmas... what more needs to be said?

Magical Mystery Tour (1967) - Mainly if you're a Beatles fan, but a very surrealistic experience for anyone. Watch it for the music and enjoy it for the insanity.

And a few not so great but fun diversions:

Get Smart, Again! (1989) - One of the better post series TV movies.

The Munsters' Revenge (1981) - Typical post series made for TV movie attempting to recapture the majic. Not bad, but not that good. Mainly for fans of the original. Munster, Go Home! (1966) is better but it was a theatrical release.

The Parent Trap II (1986) - A fair revisiting of the concept. Nowhere as good as the original, but what film of this ilk ever is?

Rescue from Gilligan's Island (1978) - Another typical post series movie. Mainly for fans but not *too* bad.

A Very Brady Christmas (1988) - but *only* if you are *BIG* fan of the series.

The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones (1987) - I find it somewhat contrived and only a passable attempt to meld the two franchises, but many people like it.

Too many Scooby Doo movies to list (not a big fan but they *can* be somewhat fun even though very formulaic)

And finally:
Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure (2003)
***KIDDING ABOUT THE ABOVE!!!!*** Just seeing if you're paying attention! Avoid this film at all costs even if someone wants to give/loan it to you! The IMDB rating of 2.8 is 3.0 above where it should be! You've been warned!!!

Good suggestions. And I own a couple of these, not sure why they didn't come to mind.

I'm thankful I've never seen this one. I'll continue avoiding it and convincing those that I love to do the same.

^ If you've never seen Christmas Vacation 2 than you would never know whether it's truly bad or not. Don't just go by the ratings on IMDb, I stopped using that as my "buying/watching guide" years ago. I found it to be enjoyable as a one time watch and am glad I watched it.

Re: First Ever November Comedy Challenge discussion/suggestions/comments thread

^I've seen it. It's *truly* bad. I dropped $3 for a copy from BL and after I watched it felt like I overpaid. I guess if you like the character it'd be OK. I find him too annoying to use for an entire film and struggled to finish watching. The only reason I *did* watch the entire film is I was watching for one of the challenges. If you alter the ratings and only use "made for TV" as the barometer the IMDB rating is more accurate but still a bit on the high side.

I, too, do not use IMDB "ratings" as they tend to aggregate "professional" reviews with "reviews/ratings" from anyone who'll register. I generally trust them about as much as those from Amazon - not at all. I use allmovie (now allvrovi with an "improved" site [wanna buy a bridge?] that's much worse than the original) for "trusted" reviews and combine that with reviews from professional reviewers who appear to have similar tastes to mine. Roger Ebert is one I can trust almost 100% of the time. However, he does not review "made for TV" fare. Allrovi does not have a "pro" rating for CV2 but the "user" ratings are 1/2 star out of 5.

I plan on watching Some Like It Hot for the first time as well. I can't wait.

Today is the first day off I've had during the challenge where I didn't have something else to take up my whole day. I'm really looking forward to getting in a bunch of views today and tomorrow. With how crazy everything has been I can't think of a better genre to unwind to.

I started my day off with I'm a cyborg but that's ok for my theme day qualifier. It's great to see Chan-Wook Park try something a little different. I really enjoyed it but I wish I spoke Korean. There was so much going on that I feel like I missed out on a lot of the subtleties by focusing on the subtitles.

I figured out how to get a listing of these from IMDB.

Comedy rated "M" - 62 titles in the list.

Comedy rated "GP" - 57 titles in the list.

That last one brings up another multi-checklist item. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) can get you 7 checklist items:
Rating Approved (Certificate No. 20469) (original rating)
Rating GP (re-rating) (1970)
Rating PG (re-rating) (2004)
Decade: 1960
Comedian: Peter Sellers
a British Film
A Format watched

I visited my grandparents over the weekend, and we gorged ourselves on episodes of Psych and Monk - two of their favorites. Much fun was had by all. My grandfather even took some time out from building a chicken coop in order to watch with us, though Columbo is more his vibe.
