Wasn't there a huge argument between Tony Kaye and New Line regarding this movie? It's been awhile, but I remember Kaye wanting nothing to do with this movie after New Line edited it.

/\ Yeah, I think Kaye and New Line are so distanced from one another that if there were ever a SE, it would be without Kaye's involvement.

In the doc "This Film is Not Yet Rated" Tony Kaye is interviewed about American History X (about it's subject matter I believe) and I thought he said the final film worked better than what he originally had in mind. He didn't seem angry about it.
I always thought his main beef was with Edward Norton (wasn't he the one who wanted to reedit it?).

There was even going to be a documentary about the controversy. It was when Kaye was working on a new movie for the studio (Black Water Transit?), and he said it was going to be on the Blu-Ray, at least. I didn't buy the eventual BD because it wasn't this SE Kaye was talking about.
