   We were streaming season six anyway. It was alright, but like the rest of the season it just felt kind of weak. Andy's courtship of Erin, using the Secret Santa program to send her the actual 12 Days of Christmas gifts, was as sweet as it was misguided.

   I hate this show, but my wife had tuned into TBS and I figured if it was going to be on I may as well get a list item out of it.
3. 11/23 The Office "Moroccan Christmas"
   Spoiler:

   It came on TBS right after According to Jim, so we kept watching (it's on right now, actually). A reminder of how much funnier the show had been than last season. The intervention for Meredith was a complete train wreck!

   I'm not a Dunham fan; most of his material reminds me of people I went to school with that thought they were funnier than they really were. I know at least four guys who could have not only written "Jingle Bombs" but would have been more clever about it. Anyway, it was on Comedy Central and my wife is a fan so I figured I'd endure it and add to the list. Just waiting for it to be over so I can get back to Lego Indiana Jones 2.
6. 12/02 Scrooged
   Spoiler:

   Bill Murray stars as a TV executive in (mostly) modern version of A Christmas Carol. A first time viewing, but it's hard not to appreciate Bill Murray. I look forward to repeat viewings in the future.
7. 12/07 Seinfeld "The Strike"
   Spoiler:

   Most commonly remembered for introducing the world to Festivus, this is one of the elite episodes of the series that actually still entertains me in reruns. Crazy Joe Davola (sp?) is Elaine's boyfriend and Jerry's stalker, while Jerry dates a woman who appears to be two different people depending on the lighting. There's other stuff going on, and it all dovetails nicely in a fit of absurdity/misery.
8. 12/07 Red
   Spoiler:

   Didn't realize going into it that it was set during the holiday season. It opens with Bruce Willis having reindeer on his lawn and a lit up snowman on his porch, and wreaths and Christmas trees are seen throughout the movie. Oddly, no one ever says anything to acknowledge the time of year; it's purely conveyed through those kinds of visual cues. Anyway, the movie was a lot of fun. I called it Grumpy Old Burn Notice.
9. 12/10 Gumby: Season's Greetings "Pilgrims on the Rocks"/"Pokey's Price"/"Santa Witch"/"Scrooge Loose"/"Pigeon in a Plum Tree"/"The Golden Gosling"/"Humbug"/"Toy Crazy"/"Gumby Business"/"Toy Fun"/"Train Trouble"/"In a Fix"
   Spoiler:

   Not all of these are holiday-specific, but I hit "play all" and assumed they would be. The first two shorts focus on Thanksgiving, then comes Christmas. A witch subs for Santa in one, the sleigh led by broomsticks instead of reindeer; Scrooge escapes from his novel to run amok in two fairly insane shorts. The writing is obviously dated (check out the depiction of native Americans), but there's a sense of fun to be had.
10. 12/10 Fat Albert "Fat Albert's Christmas Special"/"No Place Like Home"/"Attitude of Gratitude"
    Spoiler:

    The Christmas special holds up very well, and the other two episodes--while not holiday specific--have relevant messages about not measuring ourselves through materialism and in showing gratitude. Good stuff.
11. 12/11 Saturday Night Live "Christmas Past"
    Spoiler:

    A compilation of holiday-themed skits from over the years, including the immortal "Schweddy Balls" and the debut of Sandler's "Hanukkah Song." A nice assortment of talent and not a lot of weak material, as one would expect given the dearth of available material.
12. 12/13 Saturday Night Live Paul Rudd/Paul McCartney
    Spoiler:

    Not a complete holiday episode, but the set was decorated for Christmas and featured a really bizarre skit in which Rudd's family does a ton of inappropriate kissing including some tongue-on-tongue licking. This was Family Guy material. Hopefully this won't appear on the next SNL Christmas compilation.
13. 12/13 Saturday Night Live Hammer
    Spoiler:

    The cold open features Dana Carvey as President George Bush addressing the nation about Christmas shopping turning around the economy and hocking goods like an infomercial salesman. I don't know if it was funny or sad that the same monologue could have been delivered today with President Obama. Ellen Cleghorne's appearance on "Weekend Update" talking about Kwanzaa was fun.
14. 12/15 Psych "Polarizing Express"
    Spoiler:

    Psych does It's a Wonderful Life, with Shawn being guided by Tony Cox through a glimpse at life in Santa Barbara without him. Is it the iconic episode of all time? Nah. But I love me some Psych and this was another fun episode.
15. 12/16 Elf
    Spoiler:

    First time viewing. Predictable Christmas story about Christmas being saved by the innocence of youth overcoming the cynicism of older people. I can see why others who enjoy the movie often admit it takes a few viewings for it to really take hold. It's not the out-and-out comedy I was led to believe it was; it spends more of its time trying to be charming than funny.
16. 12/16 Everybody Loves Raymond "The Bird"
    Spoiler:

    Another entry I can chalk up to my wife having the TV playing. It's a Thanksgiving episode in which Ray's family meets with his sister-in-law's family (I can't recall if they were actual in-laws yet or not; it doesn't matter) and they have a classic city vs. country clash after a bird flies into the house and the country in-laws dispatch of it quickly. A few chuckles, but God am I tired of TBS...
17. 12/16 Everybody Loves Raymond "Jazz Records"
    Spoiler:

    Going into Christmas, Ray commits to replacing his dad's old jazz records with their CD counterparts. Along the way, the episode highlights how his parents have just accumulated and never used any of the gifts they've ever received. They hint at the dispute between vinyl and digital, but of course the audience wasn't expected to be audiophiles so it doesn't go as far as I'd have liked.
18. 12/16 Fred Claus
    Spoiler:

    Santa's prodigal brother Nick returns, learns about responsibility and teaches his brother some humility in the process. Santa's operation is threatened by some kind of board of investors or some such, represented by Kevin Spacey. I don't claim to understand that part of the story at all, but at least we get to see Elizabeth Banks in a cute red outfit with white trim.
19. 12/17 Christmas in Washington
    Spoiler:

    Ellen Degeneres hosted this year's celebration, and even though we're only half way through it as I type this, she's done a great job. I'm utterly unfamiliar with nearly any of the artists so far (I've only heard of Miranda Cosgrove and I have no idea who the dude from Glee is), but it's been an alright show so far.
20. 12/18 Grey's Anatomy "Holidaze"
    Spoiler:

    My wife was happy to discover the sixth season is available for streaming. I was just happy that an episode I sat through qualified for this challenge. It's an anthology episode, with segments taking place on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. I didn't really get into it, but it did make me want to watch the "Holiday Knights" episode of Batman: The Animated Series.
21. 12/19 Iron Chef America "All Star Holiday Dessert Challenge"
    Spoiler:

    An episode from 2007 in which Paula Deen and Michael Irvine partnered with Iron Chefs and threw down over some Christmas desserts. I really like Irvine; don't care for Deen, and while he and his partner lost (by two points), it was nice to see him antagonize her rather than pandering to her like everyone else (all done in a humorous, friendly way, of course; nothing genuinely mean-spirited was said).
22. 12/20 Deck the Halls
    Spoiler:

    Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito feud at Christmas time when DeVito's Buddy resolves to decorate his house so bright it can be seen from space. Their back-and-forth antics alienate their own families until they learn how important it is to go to bed each night with Kristin Davis and Kristin Chenoweth. Something about families and Christmas, blah, blah, blah. Lacks the punch of Grumpy Old Men, which it clearly took for inspiration.
23. 12/20 Trapped in Paradise
    Spoiler:

    Decent guy Nicolas Cage's screw-up brothers Jon Lovitz and Dana Carvey are released early from prison for Christmas and immediately draw him into a plan to rob a bank in Paradise, PA. Nic falls for a woman there and the good nature of the simple folk win over the selfish oafs. Predictable and cliched, yes, but the byplay between the three brothers is fairly entertaining.
24. 12/23 Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
    Spoiler:

    It's been years since I last saw this. Even as a kid I thought it was even more contrived than the first one, and that made it hard for me to get into it. I always liked that look at Christmas in New York City, though; I don't care if that's what it's really like or not, that's what I envision. Also, I hate the title, since no one is actually at home.
25. 12/25 A Christmas Carol
    Spoiler:

    In 1992, I received the audio cassette version of Patrick Stewart's performance of A Christmas Carol as a birthday present (my birthday being 1 December), and it became an annual tradition for me to play the tapes, one side a night, in the dark each night leading into Christmas. I was naturally excited when, in 1999, TNT produced this telefilm version starring Stewart as Scrooge. It feels like a late 90s TV production, which detracts from the overall experience, and there are times when I cringe at the way Dickens's lines were clipped, updated or set up by awkward new lines. Still, it's a personal favorite even if it falls short of listening to Stewart's one man production.
