Theme Night Movies

October 01
01. Death Curse of Tartu (1967)*
The mummy of an Indian medicine man protects his burial mound in the Florida swamps by turning into various animals (snakes, alligators, a shark ?!?) and destroying intruders. A bunch of horny archeology students intrude. Very low budget but the mummy makeup and the burial chamber cave set actually look pretty good. The movie does drag in places with a lot of swamp slogging so although I thought it was fun it only gets a 4/10.
02. Death Curse of Tartu (1967) with commentary*
The commentary with director William Grefe moderated by director Frank Henenlotter was great -- laugh out loud funny at times. Lots of stories about low budget film making.
03. The Evil of Frankenstein (1964)* (Hammer Horror Series)
The doctor finds his missing monster but then loses it again to a conniving hypnotist. Features a well done and necessary retelling of the original creation scene which results in a more Universal looking monster. An interesting and different take on the Frankenstein series with rich sets and nice labs and more emphasis on the monster than in the first two films. The monster is quite scary in some of the rampage scenes and there is an action filled end. 7/10
04. Dracula Has Risen From the Grave (1968)* (4 Film Favorites * Dracula)
OK but typical Hammer Dracula movie. He is seeking revenge on a priest who locked him out of his own castle. Chris Lee is still brutal as the vampire but I missing the pure snarling rage seen in earlier films. Some nicely shot scenes and good use of colors. 6/10
05. From Beyond the Grave (1973)*
Five stories, one very very short, of the supernatural. None are perfect but all are well done and based on objects from an antique store. Two of the stories were outstanding and two were good with the short one counting for nothing really. Some predictability was balanced by some real creepiness and a few jumps in the two best. 7.5/10

October 02
06. The Dreaming (1988)* (Aussie Horror Collection 2)
A doctor experiences strange dreams and visions after a patient who was injured in a museum robbery dies mysteriously. Starts out strong with some genuinely eerie moments but eventually gets a bit repetitious and begins to drag a little although an atmosphere of menace remains. The end makes sense but doesn't really seem connected to the rest of the story. 6/10
07. Patrick (1978)* (Aussie Horror Collection 1)
Pretty good story of a nurse who gets involved with a patient who has been in a coma for three years and the strange things that begin to happen to her. Almost medical science fiction the mystery is gradually revealed and there are a few good jumps along with a bit of gore. Well paced with a good climax. 6/10
08. The Survivor (1981)* (Aussie Horror Collection 2)
Strange events occur after a terrible airplane crash which only the pilot survived. Outstanding sense of mystery and mood of increasing menace. The tension never lets up. Only the resolution is mildly disappointing, not for the expected twist, but rather for the why of it all, which just seems a little flat. Its possibly nothing could really live up to the great build up. 8/10
09. Messiah of Evil (1973)*
A woman goes to a small coastal town looking for her father and becomes involved with a terrible secret. A strange, creepy, and slowly paced movie with strong visuals. A general feeling of unease is well established but the whole thing never quite came together for me. 6.5/10
10. Terror Is A Man (1959)
Standard but well made and acted mad scientist on an island yarn. A shipwrecked sailor finds himself on an island with a doctor and his experiment. Its a bit talky and when the experiment finally gets out its not all that terrifying. First of several Blood Island films. 5/10

October 03
11. Frogs (1973)*
Eerie events, spearheaded by a big jump in the frog population, take place around a mansion in the swamp. This is a great cheesy movie! Its very predictable but also very well done. Some of the kills are a bit silly but others are quite suspenseful and there a lots of shots of all kinds of reptiles and amphibians. Many creatures join in but remember, its the frogs who are in control. 7.5/10
12. Deep Rising (1998)*
Big underwater beasties pig out on a cruise ship and then take on some mean MFs with big guns. Ugh. So many things I dislike about modern action movies wrapped up in one film. A few nice gore scenes and pretty good looking cgi beasts can't compensate for galactically stupid plot points, unlikeable characters, and way too much running, shooting, smoke and noise. Cutting about twenty minutes would have helped. 5/10
13. Day of the Animals (1977)
UV rays pouring through a hole in the ozone layer cause animals to attack humans. A group (a typical disaster movie cross section of western civilization) on a survival hike run into more than they expected. Tension is steadily built and nicely edited camera angles really make it seem like the animals are watching and waiting. The attacks are well done. Absorbing to the end. 7/10
14. Lake Placid (1989)*
A giant beastie is found living in an isolated lake in Maine. Unexpected humor balanced by good action and spiced with just a bit of gore made this a very pleasant surprise. The creature looked good and the cast was very likable. 7.5/10
15. A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989)*
Entertaining entry is nothing special but has good sets and effects and reveals a bit more about Freddy's history. OK cast and story. 6/10

October 04
16. Strangler From the Swamp (1946)*
Simple, predictable but entertaining low budget ghost story about the spirit of a man wrongly hanged seeking revenge on those who condemned him. Some nice swamp sets and excellent use of lighting provides a nice spooky atmosphere. The acting is ok although the dialog is a bit stilted at times. Fans of horror films of the 1930's and 40's should definitely check this out. 6/10
17. The Exorcist (1973)*
Its true. I had never seen this before. A very good movie, absorbing from start to finish. Some of the shocks have become well known and old hat by now. I wish I could have seen this in a theater back in 1973! 8/10

October 05
18. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)*
For some reason, probably expectations based on the first movie, I had some trouble connecting with this one. The villains seemed like buffoons, one had a very annoying voice and there was little sense of threat, despite some kills. The last 15 or 20 minutes won me over though - they were sick' depraved, and totally insane but all in a good way. I need to see this again but for now 6/10.
19. Warlock Moon (1973)*
A young couple run into sinister happenings at an abandoned health spa. Low budget drive-in fare but pretty good. The acting is ok and there are some nice plot twists. Very suspenseful ending but a few events are left unexplained. Still fun. 6.5/10

October 06
20. Humanoids From the Deep (1980)*
Super-evolved fish want to mate with human women and in doing so disrupt the Salmon Festival. Starts like a 1950's sf movie but with more sex and gore. This could be the model on which all those Syfy originals are based, minus the sex and gore. Pretty good looking mutants and ok acting with some minor name stars but overall seems routine. 5/10
21. Forbidden World (1982)
A mutation that constantly changes its genetic structure threatens an isolated research station on a distant planet. Not as by the numbers as Humanoids. Feels lower budget and the acting is not as good but the characters and story are stranger and more unpredictable. The mutant is also a bit low budget but the wtf factor makes this a fun movie. 6/10

October 07
22. Strait-Jacket (1963)* (Sony The William Castle Film Collection)
Joan Crawford plays an axe murderess who is released, cured, from the asylum. Heads begin to roll. This is a very good picture, perhaps one of William Castle's best directorial efforts. Crawford does a great job as the lead, shifting from sultry vamp to contrite child in the blink of an eye. There are a few genuine jumps and tension is built up very nicely. There are also some neat shots that really set a sinister mood. 7/10

October 08
23. The Hand (1981)*
A comic book artist loses his hand in a freak automobile accident. Bias alert: I'm a big Micheal Caine fan and he is excellent as the artist. Overall well acted and suspenseful there are some genuinely chilling and gruesome scenes. Well directed, almost perfectly paced and engaging to the end. 8/10
24. The Curse of the Cat People (1944) (Val Lewton Box)
A child's imaginary friend looks and sounds just like her father's dead first wife. No outright scares but there are plenty of eerie moments in this study of a child's fantasy life, both light and dark. Great use of lighting effects to indicate other-worldliness. Good acting jobs all around and a genuine sense of threat at the end. 7.5/10

October 09
25. Frankenstein 1970 (1959)* (Karloff and Lugosi Horror Classics)
The last of the Frankensteins seeks to prolong the line using atomic power (well atomic steam really) to revive the creature created by his ancestor. Karloff does his usual good job and has several monologues which show off that wonderful voice. The lab has a 50's vibe to it, lots of dials, gauges, and switches. We only see the monster wrapped in bandages. Standard mad scientist stuff which drags a bit. 5/10
26. The Last House on the Left (1972)*
While there were uncomfortably brutal scenes and cringe worthy moments the two clown cops and the vocals in the bgm often pulled me out of the story. The villains seemed too broadly drawn at times. Once payback started things got more interesting. Well paced but sometimes I just wasn't that involved with the story. 7/10
27. Marauders (1987)* (Savage Sinema From Down Under)
Two brutal thugs commit several crimes in a small town culminating in a rape. The townspeople take (a very poorly planned) revenge. Strong indie low budget vibe. OK effort for a first film with some interesting camera work and good pacing. Still, its just not that good of a movie with somewhat amateur acting and a script that leaves much to be desired. 4/10
28. Dead and Gone (2007)*
A man and his comatose wife are forced by finances to move into a haunted cabin in the middle of nowhere. A blind buy and a pleasant surprise. The viewer is kept wondering what's going on until the very end -- this could have almost fit into psychological horror but there is a lot of blood. Gore effects sometimes really cheesy but makeup is very well done. Rapid succession of weird and gory scenes is almost too much but it all works pretty well. 7/10
29. The Centerfold Girls (1974)*
A slasher/serial killer is murdering a year's worth of centerfold models from Bachelor magazine. Interesting take on serial killer movies -- basically an anthology movie of three stories tied together by the murderer. Andrew Prine is good as the killer and the rest of the cast works well together. Suspenseful and more breasts than even Joe Bob Briggs could count. 7/10
30. Manhattan Baby (1982)*
An archeologist and his family return from Egypt and start experiencing strange phenomena. I'm pretty burned out so I'm not sure if its me or the movie but I don't always understand why people are doing things. Seems kind of dreamlike. I think Fulci films need several viewings to really make an impact so for now a 6/10.

October 10
31. Dead Clowns (2003)*
Unappreciated clowns return from the dead just to get some respect. A strong idea not fully explored. Very good build up and setting (coastal town during a hurricane) but serious lack of tension, first clown reveal is a non-event. Wish there had been more done with clown aspect, mostly we just get shots of big clown shoes tramping, tramping. Gore level high and its nice to see zombies that stop to enjoy a kill but lingering shots of gut munching slow things down. Clever resolution negated by final scene. I was uninvolved most of the time. 6/10
32. Night of the Living Dead (1990)*
Bias alert -- I am a big Patricia Tallman fan (from B5 days). Excellent remake. I'm glad they made some changes to keep it fresh and for the most part I liked what they changed. The redneck stuff is pretty heavy handed though. Not better than the original but very good. 8/10
33. Dawn of the Dead (1978)* (U.S. Theatrical Version)
How do you follow up one of the most influential horror movies ever? Add some social commentary. Some of the satire just hit you over the head but some was subtler. The zombies seemed less of a threat and less individual in appearance. The film could have spent a bit less time on housekeeping and other domestic activities but all in all enjoyable. 7/10
34. City of the Living Dead (1980)
A reporter, a psychic, and a psychiatrist try to stop an invasion of the living dead. Creepy, eerie, gory all just at the right times with enough plot to keep things moving. This is my third or fourth viewing and I've liked it more each time. Its been three years since I last saw it so some of the surprises still worked. Perfectly paced. Incomprehensible final scene. 9/10

October 11
35. The House of the Devil (2009)*
A college student takes a babysitting job in a big old house way, way out of town on the night of a total lunar eclipse. Well acted, especially by the lead, and great bgm but the film is somewhat unbalanced. An excellent, although perhaps just a little bit long, build up but, for me anyway, the payoff just wasn't there. What happens is OK but it all seemed so standard. 7/10
36. Demon Summer (2003)*
American Graffiti with just a touch of demonic possession. Teens in a small town attempt to deal with the effects of an evil book. Likable indie film which rises above a low budget. The acting is all over the place but there are some good characters, the story is engaging and the pacing is good. Makeup and gore effects OK but low budget. Some good, intentional (I think) laughs. 6.5/10

October 12
37. The Old Dark House (1932)*
Five travelers are forced by a storm to take refuge in an eerie old mansion inhabited by a very dysfunctional family. Creepy, fast moving, atmospheric, and fun with a bit of sly humor if a bit old fashioned. Great sets and the family members are wonderfully bizarre and very unsettling. The fierce storm is almost another character. Well acted and directed. 7/10
38. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
My second viewing, the first was a couple of years ago and I think I feel about the same about it, very good but not great. I do like the build up and the hitchhiker is really creepy. The clanky sound track mixed with screams does stick in my memory. The chainsaw really isn't revved up all that often -- just enough I think. I don't really see anything wrong with the movie; it just doesn't grab me as much as it does others. 7/10

October 13
39. The Incubus (1981)* (Based on novel by Ray Russell)
A doctor, the police chief, and a newspaper owner attempt to find the perpetrator of a series of brutal rape/murders in a small town. Nice sense of tension and unease maintained throughout with some graphic murders and crime scenes. OK looking monster but I didn't care for the ending. It seemed too abrupt and although the main plot points were resolved too much was still left hanging. 7/10
40. Calling Dr. Death (1943) (Inner Sanctum Mysteries)
A neurologist or what we would consider a psychiatrist today, thinks he may have murdered his wife since he has no memory at all of the night in question but another man is convicted of the crime. Good cast for a B movie. More of a psychological thriller with touches of horror. Kind of convoluted resolution. 5/10

October 14
41. The Pit (1981)*
Odd movie about a twelve year old boy with an overactive libido whose only friends are his teddy bear and some carnivorous trogs who live in a nearby pit. This kid is just plain weird. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously and is better for it. A bit of gore pops up now and then. 5/10

October 15
42. Night of the Creeps (1986)*
Great mix of 50's SciFi and horror with a distinct 80's vibe and just a dash of noir. Ninety minutes of sheer fun. 7.5/10
43. Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988)*
The title says it all. This movie takes the clown concept and just runs amok with it. Total silly fun and lots of pretty colors. Great looking clowns and good effects. 7.5/10
44. Critters (1986)* (4 Film Favorites * Critters Collection)
Alien creatures on the run stop off on Earth for a bite to eat. Took a while to get going and I didn't really care for this particular kid hero. Rest of the cast was OK and once the critter action began it was entertaining but I preferred the alternate ending. Creatures looked very good. 6/10

October 16
45. Rasen (1998)* Japanese
A doctor helps investigate the death of one of his med school friends. Strange sequel to The Ring provides a scientific explanation for the killer tape. Absorbing, slightly unsettling mix of scifi explanation and horror. Nothing really graphic just an overall sense of unease which intensifies quite a bit at the end. The more I think about it, the more I like it. 7/10
46. Mystics in Bali (1981)* Indonesian
An American author goes to Bali to learn the black arts of the leyaks and gets more than she bargained for. Wild and bizarre with exotic locations, good makeup, and decent monsters along with very cheesy special effects. A few scenes don't seem to have any point and there are few real scares but there's plenty of jaw dropping fun. Not inherently a great movie but I liked it a lot. 7.5/10
47. Hex (1980)* Chinese
After a woman and her maid murder her brutal husband strange apparitions begin to appear. Well done ghost story, atmospheric with some scary scenes and a nice icky factor. Typical Shaw Bros. sets. Good build up of tension at the end along with a very sexy cleansing ritual. 7/10
48. Jun-ka-Por: The Crying Tree (2003)* Thai
A series of brutal murders which involve the victims heart being cut out occur around a country resort. Kind of a Thai giallo with a mysterious cloaked and hooded murderer. Pretty good kill scenes very suspenseful at times. Nothing wrong with this movie but nothing special either. 6/10
49. The Blood Drinkers (1966)* Philippine
Surprisingly good Philippine take on vampires. Mixture of full color and tinted bw, even the tinted scenes can be effective. Story is a bit choppy, possibly due to cuts for US version. Strongest aspect is the lead vampire Marco played very well by Ronald Remy. There are many atmospheric scenes with good use of light, shadows and camera angles. The bizarre henchmen and the giant pet bat are just icing on the cake. 6.5/10

October 17
50. M (1931) (WC1 if necessary, not listed as horror)
The search for a serial child murderer by both the police and the underworld. Almost a police procedural there are still some quit chilling moments and scenes with Peter Lorre. The most disturbing is his rant/plea before the underworld which is brilliantly done. Well directed with good use of camera angles, perspective, cuts, and silence to build tension. 8/10
51. The Bird With the Crystal Plumage (1970)*
An American writer living in Italy gets involved in the investigation of a series of murders. Lots of nice directorial touches and a good score. Some suspenseful but mild kills by a sinister black garbed figure. I found my attention wandering a couple of times. 6/10
52. My Bloody Valentine (1981)*
Watched the extended version. Top notch slasher with several icky kills and lots of suspense. Very typical of the genre but well done and feels fresh. None of the characters were particularly appealing but the mine setting worked very well. Quickly paced, very satisfying. 7.5/10
53. The Red Queen Kills 7 Times (1972)*
Pretty good giallo. Very complicated situation and resolution but I liked it. 6.5/10
54. The Brute Man (1946)*
Efficient PRC B-movie about a murderer known as The Creeper, played by Rondo Hatton, who is terrorizing the city. 6/10

October 18
55. The Tomb of Ligeia (1965)*
One of the best of the Corman Poe adaptations. Price plays a widower with dark secrets who a local lady falls in love with. The build up is nicely done, never boring with a feeling of ever deepening mystery. The revelation is excellent and the last 15-20 minutes are quite exciting. 8/10
56. Beyond Evil (1980)* (Toxie's Triple Terror #2)
Newly wed couple move into an old house supposedly haunted by the spirit of a witch from 100 years ago. Strange things begin to happen. Pretty standard stuff with no real scares and poor special effects. Cast is OK but the story gets a bit muddled. The ending is pretty good though and its always nice to see John Saxon in action. 5/10

October 19
57. Hello Mary Lou Prom Night II (1987)*
Great supernatural slasher movie. Not particularly original but some great dark humor, suspense, and cool kills. While the build up is very good, once the prom starts the plot does get a bit out of control. Still tons of sexy fun. 7.5/10
58. Child's Play 3 (1991)*
Good not great. Standard stuff, nothing really clever or witty. One nice jump. Still it was entertaining and Chucky looked really good, especially the face and mouth. 6/10

October 20 Happy Birthday Bela !!
59. Dracula (1931) (Dracula, The Legacy Collection)
Amazing atmosphere is created, even without much bgm, by the sets and the architecture from Dracula's castle to depths of the abbey. Much is done with suggestion like when one of the characters says he saw large dogs running across the lawn and Van Helsing replies "... or wolves?" its just chilling. Full of touches like this. 8/10
60. Voodoo Man (1944)
Lugosi plays a man trying to bring his wife back from the dead using voodoo to transfer the will to live from attractive women to the walking corpse. This makes the movie sound much better than it is. This is more like a movie serial with trap doors, moving hedges and a weird machine that stalls cars. Wayyy too much boring voodoo chanting. 3/10
61. You'll Find Out (1940)* (Karloff and Lugosi Horror Classics)
Surprisingly fun story. Kay Kyser and his orchestra are going to play for a birthday party at an eerie old mansion. Among the guests are Lugosi, Karloff, and Lorre and the b-day girl is a target for murder. Kyser is good at comedy and the big band tunes are excellent. Could have been shorter though, there's endless wandering through secret passages which should have been cut. 6/10

October 21
62. Asylum (1972)* (The Amicus Collection)
Four story horror anthology with the best framing story ever! All the stories were at least ok and the one about the suit was really eerie and bizarre. No big scares though. 7/10

October 22
63. Bloody Pit of Horror (1965)*
The Crimson Executioner returns from the grave to torture the impure. The villain is way over the top -- I loved his smile of boyish glee as he frolics in his torture chamber. Not a very good movie but entertaining except for one really long, boring fist fight. 5/10
64. The Golem (1920)
A rabbi creates a man from clay to protect the Jews of Prague from the Emperor's purge. Some very effective scenes at the beginning and the end surround a mediocre middle involving the golem as errand boy and a forbidden love affair. 6/10
65. Bay of Blood (1971)* (The Mario Bava Collection Vol. 2)
Several people are trying to get control of a piece of land and bloody mayhem results. Quality Bava, wonderful use of colors, textures and the camera in general. Plenty of well staged killings, some quite shocking. Underlying vein of dark humor. 8/10
66. The Awful Dr. Orlof (1974)* (The Orloff Collection)
Police search for who's behind the disappearances of several young women. No big jumps but a nice consistent creepy atmosphere -- long shots of dark, wet streets, crumbling castle walls etc. Howard Vernon is great as Orlof as is Ricardo Valle as Morpho the blind killer. The very standard plot is the biggest drawback. 7/10

October 23
67. Tokyo Babylon (1994)*
Two episode OAV (total time 95 min.) featuring the Emperor's medium and spiritual protector of Japan. In the first story he helps find the cause of a series of fatal accidents in a construction company. In the second he helps another psychic track down a serial killer that attacks subway passengers. No big scares but occasional sense that there are forces that exist which are beyond human control.
68. Cut and Run (1985)*
Two reporters go to the jungles of South America to interview a survivor of the Jonestown massacre who is trying to corner the cocaine market. A surprisingly entertaining film has lots of gory jungle kills and a good amount of suspense. Most of the actors do a good job and Michael Berryman is great in his rather small role. 7/10
69. She Beast (1966)
An ancient witch returns for vengeance by taking over the body of a newlywed woman. Pretty good witch makeup in this not so scary movie. The broad humor and satire just don't work for me. Lots of running around and a seemingly endless and silly car chase don't leave much time for a real climax. 5/10
70. Revenge of the Creature (1955) (Creature From the Black Lagoon, Legacy Collection)
First sequel has the Creature captured, taken to civilization and trained using a really big electrified prod. He manages to kidnap a blond and escape. Pretty standard 50's monster fare doesn't have the mystery of the jungle setting of the original. Good cast. 6/10
71. Voodoo Man with rifftrax*
Very good riffing thank goodness. The movie got a 3, the riffing gets at least a 7.5/10
72. The Night of the Werewolf (1980)*
A vampire-witch and her werewolf are brought back from the dead but this time oppose each other. Similar to other Naschy films but more polished with a more coherent story but a bit less action. The werewolf looks very good and the vampire women are really cool. Although the final battle seems a bit abrupt, overall a very satisfying movie. 8/10
73. The Curse of the Werewolf (1961)* (Hammer Horror Series)
Slightly different take on werewolves. Moderately paced, the main character isn't even in the first twenty minutes or so. Werewolf action is somewhat limited and it tends to move stiffly although the makeup is OK. The end seems a bit rushed. 6/10

October 24
74. Elvira's Movie Macabre: The Satanic Rites of Dracula* Television
I never thought Satanic Rites was as bad as Elvira claims. The jokes are typical Elvira, moderately amusing and fairly obvious. Still fun and a joy to behold she gets a 5/10.
75. The Evil Dead (1982)
A classic that never fails to entertain. I still get caught by a few jumps and gross outs. So basic yet so compelling. 10/10
76. Dead & Buried (1981)*
A small town sheriff investigates a series of murders of transients. Nicely photographed, at various times weird, creepy, and disturbing. Atmosphere and tension maintained throughout the film. No big shocks, just quietly tense. I thought I had it all figured out about halfway through but there were a couple of unexpected twists. 9/10
77. The Beyond (1981) (Fulci Collection Vol. 1)
When an attempt is made to reopen an abandoned hotel a doorway to hell is opened up. Many striking images some of which are the most horrible and creepy I've seen. The end is excellent but the movie as a whole doesn't always work for me. Still it lingers in memory. 8/10
78. Xtro (1983)*
A man returns to his family after being missing for three years but he's changed quite a bit. Starts out strong but things get kind of odd but in a silly way. It's not always clear why things happen. Just a bit of thought shows much of the plot doesn't make sense. 4/10
79. Bedlam (1946)* (Val Lewton Box)
Boris Karloff plays the cruel head of an insane asylum who helps commit a woman who opposes his policies. Not a traditional horror story although the treatment and conditions of the inmates is pretty terrible. Karloff's final fate does have a touch of Poe about it. BK does his usual fine job and the rest of the cast is equally good. 7/10

October 25
80. Q The Winged Serpent (1982) (The Larry Cohen Collection)
A huge flying creature terrorizes NYC. Its linked to a series of ritual murders. A grittier take on traditional giant monster movies. The creature effects look a bit dated but are usually OK. Seen in a theater when it first came out the gore was quite shocking but not its not that much. Good acting but some of the scenes with Michael Moriariy go on a bit too long. 6/10
81. Leatherface The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)*
Leatherface has a new family but the same basic lifestyle. Plot similar to the first movie but adds a weekend warrior to the mix who can fight back and allows the heroine to be changed at the end. 7/10

October 26
82. [Rec] (2007)*
I usually don't like shaky cam and I didn't care for it here either but this is without a doubt the creepiest thing I've seen in a long time. The last five minutes are just awesome and I liked that fact that only hints were given as to what's going on and you had to put them together in one mind shattering Lovecraftian realization. OK, maybe not so much but still pretty darned good. 10/10
83. Christmas Evil (1980)* (aka You'd Better Watch Out)
What a strange movie! This is not really a horror movie, its a Christmas movie with just a little bit of murder. Instead of the expected massive bloodshed you often get reminded about the true spirit of the season although with just a bit of dark humor. A total surprise but I really liked this. 8/10

October 27
84. Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957) Streaming
A planeload of scientists go to a small Pacific island which was engulfed by a radioactive cloud after the first H-bomb test. They are searching for a previous expedition which has totally disappeared. Pretty darned cool looking monsters for a low budget 50's flick. Acting is OK and there are some clever if probably absurd ideas kicked around. Must see for fans of 1950's monsters or cheesy stuff in general. 6/10
85. Race With the Devil (1975)*
Four people traveling in an RV see a ritual murder which leads to a series of car chases and other incidents. Great cast and very exciting action but relies too much on one of my pet peeves which is that the cult just seems to know too much about what our heroes are doing. May be supernatural intervention but it is a bit annoying. 7/10
86. The Fly 2 (1989)*
The son of Brundle is a chip off the old block. Pretty good sequel with great looking fly monster. Good cast, a couple of cringe worthy moments, and satisfying conclusion but nothing really new here. 6/10
87. Sick Girl (2009)*
No plot to describe. Pretty much a character study of a sick, twisted individual. There are gross and disturbing scenes but its not a constant barrage, though less might have been better. I found the lead to be kind of charming in her non-psycho moments. Has a low budget feel with some acting problems to match but it all works in a sad kind of way. 5/10

October 28
88. Streaming shorts mostly but not all silent. all * (around 105 min) Streaming
I want to thank alyxstarr whose list I shamelessly followed for most of the silent shorts. It was fun and a bit amazing to see these early special effects. I put a + by those I particularly liked. The two modern shorts were both very well done. I've really started to appreciate the short film form over the past few years and hope to do more of these in next years challenge. All of these were on youtube except for Judith.

Modern
Treevenge (2008) (16:12)
Judith: The Night She Stayed Home (2010) (around 27:00)
89. The Changling (1980)
An almost perfect ghost story. Several months after the death of his wife and daughter, a composer moves into an old house. Strange happenings cause him to try to find out what occurred in the house almost 80 years ago. Moderately paced but always engaging story with fine acting and several truly chilling moments despite the fact there is no gore and very little bloodshed. 8/10

October 29
90. The Return of the Living Dead (1984)*
OK story about zombies in a can; when one breaks out mayhem ensues. A few chuckles here and there. Generally fun but not outstanding. Some of the zombies look very good and can converse. The main characters are a bunch of total goofballs. 5/10
91. The Comedy of Terrors (1964)*
Broad, silly humore usually isn't my thing but it works pretty well in this story of undertakers who need to provide their own clients. Richard Matheson provides a witty script and Price delivers his lines with relish. Lorre, whose comedic talents I've noticed before, is also fine as are Karloff and Rathbone in smaller roles. 6/10

October 30
92. Curse of the Voodoo (1964)* (The British Horror Collection -- Elite)
A hunter kills a lion on sacred ground and is cursed by the lion worshipping natives. He goes to London but suffers terrible nightmares and seems to be stalked by African warriors. Pretty good, told in a straight forward manner with little atmosphere but good suggestions of witchcraft. The climax does get a bit spooky though. 5/10
93. Tower of Evil (1972)* (The British Horror Collection -- Elite)
Three mutilated bodies and a raving girl are found on a small island that has an abandoned lighthouse on it. One of the corpses was stabbed with and ancient gold spear. A party of scientists goes to investigate. A nice surprise. The island and lighthouse make for an eerie, atmospheric setting that is well used and some of the sets are very imaginative. Good acting and a growing sense of menace lead to an exciting if not unexpected conclusion. 7/10
94. The Mummy's Shroud (1967)*
Typical but well done mummy hokum takes place in Egypt in the 1920's. The mummy attempts to kill all those who desecrated his master's tomb. Good acting and pacing. The monster looks OK, a little different but not as scary as some. Good effects in the climax. 6/10
95. Val Lewton: The Man in the Shadows (2008)*
Good documentary but I would have appreciated more info on the man. Lots of movie clips, it was good to see some from the non-horror films. Common themes are discussed. Martin Scorsese is not the best narrator, he has a rather dry approach. 5/10
96. Halloween 2 (1981)
A second viewing. The first time was right after the original which was a big mistake. Taken by itself this is a good movie -- scary, suspenseful and satisfying -- it just can't compare to the original. I really like the way Michael Myers just seems to fade in from the shadows sometimes. 7.5/10
97. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Still a fine movie and I think better than the remake. There's something about the black and white film that adds a lot to the atmosphere and there is a great feeling of claustrophobia. 9/10

October 31
98. Weird Woman (1944)*
Politics, backstabbing, and witchcraft in the Sociology Department of a local college. Good script and cast. Is it black magic or just our own fears? 6.5/10
99. Son of Frankenstein (1939) (Frankenstein, The Legacy Collection)
The son returns to claim his father's legacy with the help of Ygor (one of Lugosi's best roles). Kind of talky but wonderfully strange castle interiors and the post apocalyptic nightmare look of the surrounding country side provide plenty of atmosphere. The monster doesn't really do all that much but is frightening when necessary and a little sympathetic as well. 7/10
100. Trick 'r Treat (2007)*
A great set of four interwoven stories. Creative, well written, very fresh and scary at times, this is almost the perfect Halloween movie. May become a yearly tradition. 10/10
101. Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981)*
Very good revenge story with a mystery of who or what is behind it all. Good script and acting but no real surprises. Nice build up to the kills and the scarecrow is very scary looking. Hard to believe this was made for TV. 7/10
102. Halloween 4 (1987)*
M. Myers returns, this time to go after his niece (and everybody else for that matter). I think Michael has become too strong, too substantial in this movie. He's missing the mystery and some of the creepiness. He also seems to be able to teleport when necessary. Still its an OK sequel and does entertain, its just missing some of the atmosphere. 5/10
103. Open Graves (2010)*
A game from the time of the Spanish Inquisition grants the winners a wish but gives the losers only the deaths predicted by the cards. A bit like Final Destination and I generally don't like fate movies. This one didn't change my mind. Its kind of stupid and has a predictable twist ending. 4/10
104. Sting of Death (1966)*
The other half of the double feature I started with. A man sized jellyfish is terrorizing a research center located on a small island in the Everglades. Even cheesier than Death Curse of Tartu it has one of the worst monsters ever -- a guy in a wetsuit covered with tubes and wearing a big blown up plastic bag on his head! Really! I do love this stuff though. The acting is below par but there are several buttock jiggling dance numbers. 3/10

Re: The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread

This year, I'm incorporating the challenge into another personal goal I've been striving for on my blog. But to still make this month special, I'm aiming for the majority of this month's movies to be from prior to 1995 rather than aiming for first time viewings. I'm hoping to recapture the feeling of watching these movies as a child growing up and by watching these older movies I think I can do that. I'll make allowances for remakes or older entries when doing whole series runs, as well as select other titles, but I'm hoping to keep it as retro as possible. Also, since I'm just going to have to do reviews for them later on my blog (in months when I'm able to get to them) and instead of repeating myself, for this challenge, I now present you my October Horror Movie Challenge...in haiku!

October 1st:

1. Halloween (2007): Count me in the (small) camp that liked this film. The first half of the film where Rob Zombie explores a possible back story for Michael Myers, is interesting and paced pretty well. Unfortunately, when Rob Zombie goes for the mirror of John Carpenter's original film in the second half of his version, things get sluggish and almost boring.

2. House of 1,000 Corpses (2003): Even though it wears it's influence (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) very clearly on it's arm, this is still an extremely fun film that has a lot going for it. My absolutely favorite thing about the film is it's visual style. Falling somewhere between Rob Zombie's music video work and Grindhouse films, you can't even blame this film for ever having a boring visual moment. Also worth mentioning is Sid Haig, Sheri Moon-Zombie and Bill Moseley are all amazing in their roles.

3. The Devil's Rejects (2005): Easily Rob Zombie's best film thus far in his career and one of my favorite Horror films of the past decade. Honestly though, it would be unfair to just call this a Horror film as it melds Horror, Exploitation and Western all in a tasty concoction. Dialogue is king in this film. All my favorite roles from the film before are played to perfection yet again by Sid Haig, Sheri Moon-Zombie and Bill Moseley.

October 2nd:

4. Halloween 2 (2009): This film wasn't as awful as almost every review said it was. The problem here is that there are so many different pieces/ideas that don't have a focus and in the end don't fit all together. Another thing that bugged me about this film was Scout Taylor-Compton. Her portrayal of a tortured Laurie Strode was more grating/annoying than anything else. The film's sometimes exceedingly violent tone oddly might be it's only shining light.

5. The Strangers (2008): On the surface what seems like just another "jump-scare" film, ends up being a fantastic slow-burn of a Horror film. Atmosphere and Sound Design are used extremely well here. My absolute favorite thing about this film is the explanation to why the couple is at their vacation home in the first place. It's a brilliant yet simple scheme to bring an air of sadness way before even the first masked lunatic makes an appearance.

October 3rd:

6. Martin (1978): Extremely underrated Horror film Directed/Written by George A. Romero. The concept is great and I enjoyed the constant mash of Vampires and Religious Fervor. The film does drag a bit in a couple spots but luckily John Amplas (Martin) and Lincoln Maazel (Cuda) play their parts well enough to push it through the muck. Definitely check out this unique gem if you haven't already.

7. Grace (2009): Paul Solet's 2009 film, with it's influences such as Rosemary's Baby worn on it's sleeve and it's constant respect to it's subject matter, easily made it on my favorites list of 2009. The film is extremely slow-paced, opting to worm it's way under your skin rather than dig in for the all flash, no substance approach to Horror. Jordan Ladd (Madeline) plays a mother who slowly descends into madness in a subtle yet emotionally effective manner. Not to be outdone Gabrielle Rose plays Madeline's Mother-In-Law to levels of near insanity/annoyance. Great film for those who love Psychological Horror. My only qualms with the film come with 1.5 completely unnecessary sub-plots that do nothing for the film other than slow it's pace even further. Much respect to Director/Writer Paul Solet, for the film's choice of fantastic Cinematography, Score and the decision not to have a crazy CGI-baby.

8. Orphan (2009): It's amazing really. Take all the normal conventions of the Horror Genre, replace them with children, then watch the insanity, intensity and creepiness sky-rocket through the roof. In what should have been just another "Creepy Kid" film, turns out to be something a little special. Namely because of the film constant intensity, tension and it's extremely insane lead character Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman). Even though the film runs a little longer than it should at 123 minutes, it pays off with white-knuckle tension, great atmosphere and a incredibly violent tone. The final act may or may not turn first time viewers off to the film, but it alone definitely shows how many boundaries this film is willing to cross.

9. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996): Not much needs to be said about this Robert Rodriguez film. It's complete and utter fun, from beginning to end. George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Harvey Keitel, Danny Trejo, Tom Savini, Fred Williamson, Vampires, Boobs, Blood, Booze. What else do you really need?

10. The Collector (2009): Writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (of Saw IV, V, VI fame), try their hand at giving Horror fans a new icon. Their attempt is sort of a coin flip. The film excels at creating a completely pitch-black tone and revels in it's bleak nature. It also excels in creating a claustrophobic environment which is further helped by the idea of a booby-trapped home (Saw II comes to mind). Where it fails are it's characters, which are 99% forgettable. Unfortunately, this also means our killer is pretty much run of the mill. His motives are definitely out of the ordinary, but this is no Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers. I almost feel that any villain could have been put in this script and been just as bland. This film is definitely worth a look for the traps as well as it's Cat-and-Mouse aspect during it's 90 minute run time.

October 4th:

11. Smash Cut (2009):
How far is Able Whitman (David Hess) willing to go for his art? This film is a clear tribute to Herschell Gordon Lewis and Schlock Cinema. Though it isn't always a 100% success, it does end up being fun because of how much it's actors put into it. David Hess is fantastic in the main role as Able Whitman and surprisingly Sasha Grey is better here than she was in Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience. The film's laughs are spread throughout the film but the scene featuring Sasha Grey reading Hamlet, is worth the price of admission alone.

12. The Final Destination (2009): I've always loved this series. It cares very little about character development and overall plot because it knows exactly what it is. It's not ashamed in the fact that this film exists only for the reasons of creative death scenes and body count. The supposed final film in this franchise definitely delivers on the body count, but this time around death scenes are a little less creative and more basic/visceral. Chalk that up to a possible lack of new ideas (the second film had my favorite death scene of the series) or the pressure to make death scenes that fit the 3-D format. Either way, the film is still a ridiculous amount of dumb fun and isn't hiding the fact that the series has pretty much cloned itself since the first film.

13. His Name Was Jason: 30 Years Of Friday The 13th (2009): A documentary I was extremely excited about, ended up being one the biggest disappointments I've viewed as of late. The documentary spends almost half it's time having Directors, Writers, and Actors of the various films, speak about Jason Voorhees as a character and summarize the plot of each film. It's only when the documentary shifts into the personal stories from the set and personal experiences of those involved, that it starts to peak my interest. There is too much unnecessary filler here and not nearly enough for hardcore fans.

14. The Slumber Party Massacre (1982): Though it seems relatively slow and tame compared to many other Slasher Films, I really enjoy this film. Maybe it's the part of me that enjoys a good cheesy themed Slasher Film, or maybe it's because Russ Thorn (Michael Villella) is so damn creepy. You have to give credit to a film (of this genre) that has it's first contact of nudity dropping at the 1 minute and 47 second mark. Also randomly find it hilarious that our killer's weapon of choice is a phallic-shaped one (a particular shot in the garage is genius). Recommended to anyone who loves cheesy Slasher Films, pass if you don't.

October 5th:

15. Body Melt (1993): This little Australian Splat-Stick film was constantly being compared to other films in the genre, such as Dead Alive and Bad Taste. Unfortunately, this film is nowhere in the same league as those films. I came into this film looking forward to something similar to the two mentioned before with maybe a sprinkle of Street Trash. I got maybe 3% of that. Yes, the film is gory (selectively) and completely dripping with neon goop. The problem is that there clearly isn't enough of it and the films characters as well as it's plot aren't nearly strong enough to hold it up on their own. By the time the goop starts to really make it's mark, there is maybe 10-15 minutes left in the film. In the end, a film that shouldn't seem dull or boring on paper, actually is.

16. The House Of The Devil (2009): Believe the hype. This is a perfect example of a film that is just as much a 1980's Horror Throwback film, as it is a great film of it's own identity. Everything is picture perfect here. The film is extremely well cast from top to bottom (Lead played by Jocelin Donahue is my favorite). Costumes and set design reflect the time period perfectly. Last but not least the score is fantastic. This film will reward your patience as the last 15 minutes of the film are a dizzying amount of chaos, for the 1 hour and 15 minutes of skin peeling tension before it. Patience is a virtue, enjoy this film.

17. Quarantine (2008):
The American Remake of the Spanish Masterpiece, [REC]. Not much is different here, which is good and bad at the same time. Bad, because the film really doesn't have it's own identity, essentially being Visual and Verbal subtitles for movie-goers who don't like Foreign Films. On the other hand Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza's [REC] was so incredibly perfect, why would you change anything? There are a couple of name changes, scenes that drag on longer or are slightly different, but folks you are looking at a mirror image here. Either way, the film is still extremely kinetic and lots of fun. Fans of the original will find things to like here.

October 6th:

18. The Burning (1981): A Slasher Film with Fisher Stevens and Jason Alexander? Even though this film is mentioned in the same breath as Friday the 13th (for many reasons), it does a decent job at slightly separating itself. Though the kills feel far and few between, FX work by Tom Savini is fantastic here. Nudity also rears it's head here and there in this flick. Blood and boobs? That's all that's needed for a decent Slasher right? Well, the setup for the film's villain is great (first 15 minutes) but somewhere along the line the film starts to drag and nothing interesting happens. Unfortunately in this viewing, I felt the film was a little too dull for something that seemed to have all the ingredients for a great time.

19. Dr. Giggles (1992): This film is far from perfect, but holy hell is it a lot of fun. Larry Drake (Dr. Giggles) is 100% to thank for that. The things I love about the film are it's mythology (which is pretty rad) and also the fact that it rarely takes itself too seriously. It also sticks to it's Medical/Doctor theme (which is further enhanced by Drake's performance) in both it's death scenes as well as it's humor. The film might rival Bad Boys II, as containing some of the funniest one-liners ever. Way too much fun in this little underrated Slasher. Seriously, who even has a Band-Aid that big anyway?

October 7th:

20. Big Bad Wolf (2006): What a complete surprise. This film was more random and schlocky than I could ever imagine. Take the slimiest guy (Richard Tyson), throw him in a Werewolf film, sneak in the typical Slasher formula, sprinkle in some Comedy (talking Werewolves?) and you have a fun time. Wait, did I mention that Richard Tyson plays a Werewolf that rapes women? Yes, you heard me right, a Werewolf that rapes women (multiple times actually). I thought I had seen it all and this film decides to shit on my brain. Great gore effects/death scenes and enough random fun for all to enjoy.

October 8th:

21. Stagefright (1987): It might be blasphemous to say but Michele Soavi's Italian Slasher film is a little on the dull side. Atmosphere/Environment (Old theater/constant storm) is great, there are some inventive/gory kills and there is half a boob's worth of nudity. The problem is that this film takes too long to get interesting. It sees it's tension peak a little past the 1 hour and 10 minute mark. Don't get me wrong it's a decent entry into the Slasher genre, but for a market that is already flooded with clones, I was hoping for a little more in this one. Luckily for Horror fans, 7 years later, Michele Soavi would go on to direct the genre classic, Dellamorte Dellamore (aka Cemetary Man).

22. Crawlspace (1972):
Great Made-For-TV Horror/Thriller, that manages to never overstay it's welcome (74 minute run time). Without the solid performances by Arthur Kennedy (Albert Graves) and Tom Happer (Richard Atlee), the film would have definitely been pretty awful. Teresa Wright's (Alice Graves) character was pretty annoying though, which would be my only downside to the film. Extremely simple, yet effective premise that creates tension in a multitude of ways.

23. Return Of The Living Dead: Part II (1988):
Plot-wise, this film screams deja-vu, but ends up being a fun, yet extremely cheesy Zombie romp. FX work by Kenny Meyers and Williams Munns is great, though sometimes a little too cartoon-like for my tastes. Even then we still get screwdriver stabbings, Zombies getting blown in half, and scalps endlessly getting munched on. Not as great as the first film in the series, but still enjoyable. Worth the price of admission for the random Michael Jackson Zombie and late-80's electric shock FX work.

24. Hostel (2005)
**{with Audio Commentary with Eli Roth, Scott Spiegal, Boaz Yakin & Quentin Tarantino}**: Once this film's commentary track gets off the Ego-Stroking early on, it's very enjoyable. There are a lot of personal stories about the filming, writing, FX work and many other things you would expect in a commentary such as this one. I did enjoy Scott Spiegal's puns (hand brake!), Roth's stories about filming in Prague and also a great bit about being called a Gorilla by Slovakian girls. Yakin doesn't do too much here, since he clearly gets talked over by the rest of the Producers and Director Eli Roth. Later moments of the film are nice on this track since the commentary starts to reflect set design, or what is actually going on the screen. Love the entire crew's verbal reaction to a particular shot in the film's ending.

25. Cannibal Ferox (1981):
Although it contains some really great gore set-pieces (namely one involving Zora Kerova), Umberto Lenzi's attempt at the Cannibal film, just seems too similar to Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust. I'd almost be inclined to say that it feels like a more drawn out and watered down version of the said film. Lenzi's film contains almost all the elements that made Deodato's film great, but ends up being extremely boring. Oddly enough the cause of it might be Lenzi's need to top all the Horror/Gore elements of Deodato's film.

26. Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008): Whether you love this film or hate it really depends on how you feel about the film's musical score (obviously). I instantly fell in love with the score, so everything else was icing on the cake. Anthony Stewart Head, who plays a great Jekyll/Hyde character (Nathan Wallace) steals every scene that he is in. Also even though Bill Moseley (Luigi Largo) and Ogre (Pavi Largo) are used sparingly in this film, when they are on screen, they are also fantastic. This might be one of the few times I've seen Paris Hilton and not been annoyed. Then again it's probably because seeing her face fall off on-stage is pretty hilarious. My only qualm with the film comes with the need to sing every line of dialogue (even when it isn't leading into a song).

October 9th:

27. Frozen (2010): In the tradition of films like Open Water, Adam Green's film plays on some of our most primal fears. Heights. Being stranded. Feeling helpless. Pacing is great and the film felt a lot shorter than it's run time suggested. Also surprisingly our three main actors, Shawn Ashmore (of the X-Men franchise), Kevin Zegers and Emma Bell are all solid in their roles. So suspend a little belief and enjoy this frightening little Horror/Thriller. I'll probably never look at a Wolf or Ski Lift the same way again.

28. Let Me In (2010): Even though there are strong performances by Chloe Moretz (Abby) and Richard Jenkins (The Father), this remake of the 2008 film "Let The Right One In", is a little too much like a "Greatest Hits" album for my tastes. I did enjoy the slight changes to the script on a couple scenes (including a connection between Abby and The Father), but I felt the film had trouble gaining it's own identity, opting to just following the motions. CGI work here is pretty poor as well (think fight scenes from Blade II) and comes off too cartoon-like. One our leads Owen (played by Kodi Smit-McPhee) is pretty dull and seems to read off the cues/notes of the original film. With all that said, the film is still enjoyable and should be checked out.

October 10th:

29. Piranha (1978): Breeding mutant Piranha to fight the North Vietnamese? Awesome! Joe Dante's Jaws-Rip-Off film is fantastic. It purely delivers on everything you would want from a film like this. Bubbling red water everywhere. I absolutely love the scene where Heather (Maggie McKeown) plays the Jaws video game at the airport.

30. The Ugly (1997): Neat little Serial Killer/Psychological Horror film out of New Zealand. Casting (minus the odd choice of Orderlies) is solid all around especially Paolo Rotondo (Simon Cartwright), who pretty much carries this entire film. Where this film excels is it's visual cues and there are some fantastic shots in this film. From the appearance of the "Visitors" and an amazing silhouette of Simon Cartwright's Mother one night, are some highlights. The film doesn't necessarily do anything we haven't seen before (see Silence Of The Lambs) but has enough interesting visuals and a solid performance by Paolo Rotondo, to keep it from being another film in the pile.

31. Wicked Lake (2008): So much fun in this little low-budget film directed by Zack Passero. I've always enjoyed seeing the tables turned in Horror films and seeing Women as the hunters. A good group of inbreed hillbillies, decide to prey on a group of young girls, unknown to them that they are indeed a Coven of Witches. Surprisingly, there are splashes of the Rape/Revenge genre here, which makes this entire film that much more interesting. Pacing is solid and there is definitely enough buckets of blood to satisfy. Brain Slurpees, Microwave-Ready Decapitated Heads and possibly the hottest Coven ever?

October 11th:

32. Friday The 13th: A New Beginning (1985):
A Friday The 13th film without Jason Voorhees? Well sort of. What we get here is a Pseudo-Jason, but all the things that make the series fun. Lots of boobs and creative kills (belt across the eyes!). We also get somewhat of a cliffhanger concerning our (not so little) grown-up, Tommy Jarvis (John Shepherd). Who kills a man when he's trying to take a legitimate dump?

33. Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986): This is more like it. The real Jason Voorhees returns in hilarious fashion to take care of business. I only wish that Tommy Jarvis (this time played by Thom Mathews) didn't annoy the shit out of me in this film. The one instance of 80's Dance Sex almost had me in tears.

34. Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988): The MPAA completely ravaged this film. I feel robbed. This film has one of the most annoying cast ensembles in the Friday The 13th series and I don't get the joy of seeing most of those tools get snuffed. Minus our lead Tina (Lar Park-Lincoln) and her awesome showdown with Jason Voorhees at the finale, this film is a complete bore-fest.

35. Friday The 13th (1980):
Genre Classic. Not much to say here other than that. I've seen this film more times than I can count and I still love it. Score by Henry Manfredini is great. How ridiculously creepy is Betsy Palmer in this film?

October 12th:

36. Friday The 13th Part II (1981): Great pacing and just as fun as the first film. The second film contains some of my favorite kills in the series, including one that is lifted straight from Mario Bava's 1971 film, "Twitch Of The Death Nerve". Last 20 minutes of the film are gold. Poor Mark (Tom McBride), the guy had brown silk panties in his near future.

37. Friday The 13th Part III (1982): Jason Voorhees finally gets his Iconic Hockey Mask. Andy (Jeffrey Rogers) gets an awesome death scene. Fox (Gloria Charles) seems to be in awe of a barn. That's it. Incredibly boring film with hilarious 3-D format cues. It's like the Yo-Yo is actually in your face!

38. Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter (1984): Easily my favorite film in the series (besides the first). Part 4 also contains my favorite version of the Tommy Jarvis (Corey Feldman) character. It also has Tom Savini returning to do FX work, which is great here. The series started to do sort of a slippery-slope in terms of quality after this film, but Part 4 still remains one of the strongest entries. Someone please tell me how a hammer sticks to a wall like that?

October 13th:

39. Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993): Not even great FX/Gore from KNB can save this steaming turd of a film. The film has more in common with Jonas Quastel's 2008 film, "Scourge" than it does with any film in the Friday The 13th series. In 91 minutes time, we are expected to throw out all the mythos that had been built in the 8 films before this one and gladly ingest new ones?

40. Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989):
Very boring. The film runs 100 (!) minutes and I have to wait for more than half of it to see Charles McCulloch (Peter Mark Richman) die. In essence, that means I spent a long time being highly annoyed during this viewing. Minus some really cool shots of Jason Voorhees in Manhattan (last 40 minutes of the film) and Julius (Vincent Craig Dupree) losing a hilarious boxing match, the film is awful. Apparently Jason Voorhees looks sort of like a Muppet when he's covered in toxic waste. Don't even get me started on the awful film score.

41. Jason X (2001):
Too much fun crammed into one film. Different enough (Sci-Fi?) to stay interesting but Director James Isaac and Writers Victor Miller/Todd Farmer know what this series thrives on. Jason Voorhees, boobs (removable nipples!), and gore (smashed face anyone?). The addition of an Uber-Jason as well as a hilarious holographic simulation of Camp Crystal Lake are only icing on the cake. "Jason-Fucking-Voorhees, that's what's going on!".

October 14th:

42. Freddy Vs. Jason (2003): To be honest, I'm not really sure when this film stopped being fun to watch. Maybe I finally realized the dialogue is horrendous and the acting is embarrassing. Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) and Ken Kirzinger (Jason Voorhees) seem to be the only two in this entire film who are having fun. Can't say much about the rest of the cast, who seem to have constant trouble acting their way out of a paper bag. Also, how did anyone allow Kelly Rowland (of the Pop/R&B group, Destiny's Child) to last almost 90% of the film? Sorry, not even Monica Keena's boobs can save this one.

October 17th:

43. Friday The 13th (2009): Director Marcus Nispel takes another stab at a beloved Horror franchise. Unlike his work with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), which took me a little bit to warm up to, I really enjoyed his work with the lore of Jason Voorhees. There are plenty of things here that make the film fun (including a new twist). Enough nudity and interesting kills (a great take on a old goodie!) to keep the film moving along. Our lead Jared Padalecki (Supernatural) is solid here, even though the rest of the cast (minus the entertaining Aaron Yoo) is awful. Derek Mears (The Hills Have Eyes 2) is fantastic as Jason Voorhees and is more like the classic Jason than Ken Kirzinger (Freddy Vs. Jason) was. My only negatives about the film are the highly annoying Trent (Travis Van Winkle) and Nispel's shooting style. Many shots in this film are beautiful, the problem is 98% of the film is poorly lit and it does get trying when you can't really see anything. The film ends up being a new take on the first 3 films in the series, but is definitely a fun addition.

44. Black X-Mas (2006): Completely unnecessary remake of the 1974 Canadian Classic. This film is terrible. All the creepiness of the original film is gone. Glen Morgan's script is boring, extremely tedious and runs on one-note for 94 minutes. The constant flashbacks and explanation of our villain, help make the film even more of a chore to sit through. A yellow-skinned killer, really? Only positive thing I can say about this film was the decision to cast Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) as eye candy. Honestly, I think I had more fun getting my Wisdom Teeth taken out than sitting through this garbage.

45. Leprechaun (1993):
Cheesy and slow-paced. Hardly the worst Horror film I've ever seen, but not as fun as the later entries in the series. Yes, Jennifer Aniston (Friends) is in this. Average film, but worth watching if you want to see Warwick Davis (Harry Potter series) act completely silly and insane. Apparently a Go-Kart can flip over a Pickup Truck.

46. The Deaths Of Ian Stone (2007): What I thought would end up being a Horror/Thriller version of "Groundhog Day", morphs into something completely different. Ian Stone (Mike Vogel) is dying every day but is being reborn into a different life each time. As the film progresses, we follow him as he searches for answers. Definitely more of a Thriller/Mystery than a full on Horror film, this Stan Winston produced film is DTV fun. The story is very interesting and the film is kinetic enough to keep things at a fun pace. Some of the makeup is unintentionally laughable, but overall fits the vibe. The film gets extra points for casting the extremely gorgeous Jaime Murray (Dexter) as one of the lead roles. Recommended for those who like their Supernatural Thriller/Horror films a little unique.

October 18th:

47. Tenebre (1982): Great Giallo and easily one of my favorite Dario Argento films. Soundtrack by Goblin is awesome. Some really great kills (the finale is ridiculous!) in this one as well as Bullmer's (John Saxon) fantastic hat. This one is a whole lot of fun and will leave you guessing until the bitter end.

48. A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010): Platinum Dunes gets their mitts on another beloved Horror franchise. The results are just average. I really enjoyed the fleshing out of Freddy Krueger's Origin (minus his Occupation), since it goes places the Original film sort of hinted at. The opening credits I also thought were fantastic. That's where the positive marks end. Though he's clearly trying, Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) is no Robert Englund. The new makeup isn't quite right and Haley doesn't quite have the physical presence that Englund had in the Original film. The pacing is quite sloppy here and drags it's way along as the mystery unfolds. Also whereas the Original film masterfully blurred the lines between dreams and reality to the viewer, the lines are almost too defined in this version. It's a good attempt, but Platinum Dunes' remakes of Friday The 13th (2009) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), were so much more fun. Someone please tell Thomas Dekker (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), to ease up on the guyliner.

49. 30 Days Of Night: Dark Days (2010): Being a huge fan of the Novels as well as the 2007 film, I was excited to see a DTV sequel rear it's Vampiric head. I was even more excited when I found out that Steve Niles (Writer of the Novels) would be involved in the script of this film. This sequel is not nearly as good as the first film, but is easily one of the better DTV Horror films I've seen in a long while. I appreciate the film's completely pitch-black tone, opting to stay in a pool of depression rather than add spikes of One-Liner Comedy to lighten up the mood. The film is extremely slow-paced (which matches it's mood perfectly) and filled with good amounts of action/gore. Also have to mention that I loved the opening sequence (so much levels of bad ass).

50. Night Of The Demons (2009): Adam Gierasch's (Autopsy) take on the 1988 Classic. For most of it's run time, this remake is pretty fun. There are enough ample boobs to go around and enough gore to fill up a swimming pool. I have to also acknowledge the new version of the infamous "Lipstick Gag", which in this 2009 version had me laughing for well over 5 minutes. It has to be seen to be believed. The film is also fun because the cast is pretty solid. Edward Furlong (Terminator 2) and John F. Beach (Fear Clinic) are surprisingly likable. The rest of the cast, including Shannon Elizabeth (who plays Angela) are obviously all eye candy but interestingly enough are not as annoying as these roles tend to bring out. Drac Studios does a fantastic job with FX/Makeup work, even though it's hard to appreciate once the film's lighting takes a severe backseat. My only negative here is the casting of Monica Keena (Freddy Vs. Jason). Her acting ability is that of Vanilla Ice Cream and it only gets worse once the script forces her to be sort of a Nostradamus of Demonology near the end of the film. Not as potent as the 1988 film, but still fun nonetheless. Demonic Possession through Anal Sex?

October 19th:

51. Reeker (2005): Solid film with great atmosphere and cinematography. Unfortunately, those things don't help make the movie fully enjoyable. The problems here are it's villain and script. Our villain (we are to believe) is a version of Death that smells. The idea is a little goofy and doesn't trade too well on screen. The script is solid in it's first half, but shows in it's latter half that the film would be stronger had it been a short. We get too many instances in the film where our characters are wandering and not doing much of anything. Did this film really need a twist ending?

52. Going To Pieces: The Rise and Fall Of The Slasher Film (2006):
Great documentary. Lots of great personal stories about on-set experiences, pitches and production. I love the attention being paid to the Slasher genre as a whole, as opposed to just it's most popular ones. Even April Fool's Day (1986) gets some hilarious attention here. Also it's interesting to see Directors such as John Carpenter, Wes Craven, and Amy Holden Jones speak of Slashers as a reflection of the times. Highly recommended to all Horror fans. R.I.P Stan Winston

53. My Soul To Take *3-D* (2010): Lord, I've been waiting for so long for Wes Craven to make a triumphant return back to Horror. Sure, he's Written/Produced some fun flicks, but it's been a long wait for the Director/Writer in him to come back to the fold. It's been 14 years since Scream and unfortunately it looks like it might be a longer wait. This film is so messy it's confusing. Not sure if it wants to be a "Coming-Of-Age" film, or hold the fingerprints of A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984). There isn't much of anything here other than mass confusion. Things get even worse when a chaotic flurry of explanations come at the end of the film, which do nothing more but inject more confusion into our veins. Too many things are wrong here (Cast and Script being the major part) and unfortunately fans of Wes' previous work will have to lay dormant for a little while longer. At least Emily Meade is easy on the eyes.

54. Sick Girl (2007): Plot, dialogue and acting aside, this Low-Budget flick has a couple of solid gore set pieces. That's pretty much all it has going for it. Sitting through the film was sort of like nails on a chalkboard. At least the viewing yielded Nuns getting urinated on, corpses being sewn together and a completely new meaning to the words, Strap-On Dildo.

October 20th:

55. Wishmaster (1997): So much fun! Solid story and good pacing. FX by KNB (Robert Kurtzman directs the film) are amazing and you know what you are in for within the first 5 minutes. I love the design for the Djinn (Andrew Divoff), though he does look better with a shroud on. Snake people, skeletons coming out of bodies, visual Cancer, face peeling. Just a small taste of what's in store in this fun gore-fest.

56. Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies (1999): Sequels are rarely good and this film is more proof of it. Though it's nice to see Andrew Divoff reprising his role as The Dijinn, not much else here is worth writing home about. FX this time around are handled by SOTA FX. Even though their update to the Dijnn costume is appreciated, it comes off a little too cartoon-like. Our leads played by Holly Fields (Morgana) and Paul Johansson (Gregory) are quite annoying. Also didn't like all the Religious thumping the writers soaked in this film. I was also disappointed with the gore. Most of it starts pretty solid (early scenes in the prison) and then for some reason just sort of dissipates. The film is hard to sit through when the first film was so much more fun.

October 21st:

57. Demons 2 (1986): For a film that has all of the elements (including the Film-Within-A-Film) that made it's predecessor a good time, this film sure is dull. Sergio Stivaletti's FX work is clearly the highlight of the entire film. From the ridiculously rad transformation scenes, to just the Demon makeup in general. The sequel definitely needed a dose of the "less is more" ideal. Sure there are more Demons and more pedestrians, but what good are they if they literally have nothing to do? Hank's (Bobby Rhodes) indoor voice is pretty hilarious though.

58. The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976): Love this film. Maybe because it's premise is very basic. Maybe it's because I love the setting of the film (1940's). It could also be that the film opts for creating chills and mood instead of being overtly flashy (minus the thrills of the finale). Really appreciate the Pseudo-Documentary style the film pops in an out of (with Narrative by Vern Steirman). Even though it's marked as a Cult Classic, this film is still criminally underrated.

59. Night Of The Demons (1988):
Make no mistake about it. Kevin Tenney's (Witchboard) film is 80's to the bone. The film is also a whole lot of fun. FX (which were done by Steve Johnson) are great. One of my absolute favorite things about this film is that the house is just as an important character as anyone in the cast. I also love the random bits of bad dialogue for comedic moments. Also for some reason Linnea Quigley's (The Return Of The Living Dead) lower half is utterly hypnotic in this film. "Eat a bowl of fuck! I am here to party!"

October 22nd:

60. Don't Answer The Phone! (1980): I wonder if Nicholas Worth (Kirk Smith) knows how creepy he played his character? This film is completely mediocre, but (oddly enough) saved by the fact that it is ridiculously sleazy. It's pretty much 94 minutes of topless women, writhing around and being strangled. There is also a hilarious scene involving two cops and a massage parlor. Even though the film does have it's bits of comedy, don't be mistaken, this film is definitely mean-spirited at heart. Whether it influenced it or not, it's interesting to draw comparisons between this film and Nick Palumbo's 2004 film, "Murder-Set-Pieces".

61. Feast (2005): Written by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (of Saw IV, V & VI fame) this Horror/Comedy is a great time. I love how the film is only concerned with Character Archetypes (no names in this one!) and constantly cranks up the fun factor. It definitely delivered on everything I would want from a film like this. Cheesy, fun, campy, gory, and the inclusion of Krista Allen (The Final Destination). Monster cocks everywhere!

62. The Blob (1988): This remake of the 1958 film of the same name, is a whole lot of fun. Honestly, it wouldn't be nearly as good as it was without fantastic FX. Credit goes to Tony Gardner (Darkman) and John Caglione Jr. (Salt). Look no further if you need your blood and gore (sucked down a sink!) to run plenty. Might be blasphemous to say, but I find this film holds up so much better than the Original. Also who decided to give Kevin Dillon (Entourage) a Fabio-like haircut and shirt to match?

63. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986): One of the few Horror sequels I love. Caroline Williams (Stretch), Bill Moseley (Chop Top) and a Chainsaw-Wielding, Religiously Crazy, Dennis Hopper (Lefty) all make this film for me. I also like the idea of moving the Sawyers out of the house and into a place a little more interesting (Nam Land!). Fantastic FX work by Tom Savini (Maniac) also doesn't hurt either.

October 23rd:

64. Puppet Master (1989): Full Moon Entertainment's pride and joy. Unfortunately the film hasn't aged well and shows that some of it's sequels are much better. Aside from the great Puppet designs, the film is really boring. Not much happens aside from the solid gore in the final 15 minutes. It's almost if the idea to have Psychics as the main characters in the plot was to stretch the length of the film. There is a lot of random nonsense in the film because of it. Psychics having sex is way awkward and it never gets boring to see Leech Woman puke leeches on people.

65. Puppet Master II (1991): The plot is still silly but this film is easily better than the first. Chalk that up to good pacing and the script opting for more Slasher fodder. No Leech Woman in this one, but we get the introduction of a new Puppet named Torch (annoying kids beware!). We also get more of Andre Toulon (this time played by Steve Wells), which was a nice change from the 10 minutes the character was in the first film. The obvious homages to The Invisible Man (1933) are well appreciated here.

October 24th:

66. Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge (1991): This prequel is easily the best film in the entire series. Andre Toulon (Guy Rolfe) taking on the Nazis? Sign me up! Pacing is not so bad here and the story is solid enough to keep things moving along. The plot is still silly in this film, but it's so much better than the two films before it (Psychics and Paranormal Investigators?). The introduction of the new Puppet, Six Shooter is great. Also it's nice to see more of the gore shown on screen as opposed to off to the side, like in the previous films. Origins of some of the Puppets are appreciated here, as well as the random bits of nudity.

67. Retro Puppet Master (1999):
What an awful and boring film. Was creating a prequel like this even necessary? The origins of Andre Toulon (Guy Rolfe/Greg Sestero) and his Puppets had already been addressed in the third film (also a prequel). To make matters worse, this film is rated PG-13. Even the great Puppet design for Dr. Death isn't a saving grace. Puppets chasing Mummies? It's even worse than it sounds.

68. Rabid (1977): David Cronenberg's (Videodrome) mish-mash of a Vampire, Zombie and Outbreak film. Aside from scenes of attacks, the film runs pretty flat after it's solid opening. This outing reminds me much of a stranger version of George A. Romero's 1973 film "The Crazies". Not much goes on here other than waiting around to see who gets infected next. Marilyn Chambers (Together) sports some really odd looking sores, but that won't stop (supposedly) every guy in Canada from creeping on her.

October 25th:

69. Saw II (2005): I remember for a while not liking this sequel very much. Over time I learned to enjoy it. Pacing is extremely quick and this entry doesn't suffer too much from "Flashback-Syndrome" that plagues it's later sequels. The film follows sort of the Slasher genre formula, making it a little more enjoyable. Like all the Saw films, it wouldn't be worth watching without Tobin Bell (who is great/wicked here) and some great traps (Needle Trap!). The Last House On The Left reference was also nice.

70. Planet Terror (2007): This film is almost un-reviewable for me. Casting and pacing are perfect. FX by Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger (KNB minus the K) are also great. It's impossible to watch this film and not have a huge grin on your face. Splashy blood and a good time!

71. Saw III (2006): Crispy on the outside, gory in the middle. Yet another fun sequel in the Saw franchise. Pacing in this one is a little uneven. Mostly because of the introduction of continuous flashbacks. This sequel has a little more of everything. More Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), Amanda (Shawnee Smith) and a lot more gore. The traps in this third film are amongst some of the best in the series (Pig Carcass and Crucifix Traps). The film also shares a similar structure which is later mirrored in the sixth film. Solid entry in the series, though 15 minutes could have been trimmed off.

72. Saw IV (2007): From the opening scene it's clear, Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is missed. This entry in the series introduces many new characters and sheds more light on others. Problem here is there is just too much going on and it affects the film entirely. This is the point in the Saw franchise where time lines get shuffled with and puked on. It's almost too twisty for it's own good. Negatives aside we do get some great traps once again, Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) in flashbacks and more screen time for the gorgeous Jill Tuck (Betsy Russell). Far from the worst in the series (that belongs to the next film) but not as strong as previous films.

October 26th:

73. Saw V (2008): Worst film in the series. The logic and time lines get even sillier in this one. Also let's be clear, Costas Mandylor is no Tobin Bell. The idea of a "group trap" return in this film, but the execution is a tad bit better in the second film. What's even more frustrating is that the film feels like 95 minutes of Agent Peter Strahm (Scott Patterson) having "aha!" moments. The writers clearly dug themselves in a hole with the funky time lines and are clearly trying to write themselves out.

74. Saw VI (2009): The series returns to some fun! Some loose ends in the Saw time line are tied up in this one. More Jill Tuck (Betsy Russell) is always appreciated. Flashbacks are still here but show up as much as they did in the fourth film. Great traps in this, including what can be described as a "Merry-Go-Round-Of-Death". The only negative here is the plot. I dislike the Health Care system as much as the next person, but to base a film around it is a little silly. Did anyone else want to scream "Eddie Winslow!" when watching this film?

75. Saw (2004): I'm not really sure why this film is my favorite in the series. It owes it's look to David Fincher's 1995 film, "Se7en" and isn't nearly as refined as some of the later entries. Maybe it's because it has Cary Elwes (Robin Hood: Men In Tights) and Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon) in it's cast. It also might be because the film feels extremely straight forward compared to it's sequels. Either way the film is solid outside of it's shortcomings. It's also interesting to see how much the mythos of Jigsaw has changed since the first film. Have to admit that I laugh a little bit when Cary Elwes gets a little whiny.

October 27th:

76. Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984): I love Themed-Slasher Films. This one is no exception. The 1984 film that became the enemy of all parents when it was released is too much fun. Some great kills in this one (Sledding Accident!), Linnea Quigley's (The Return Of The Living Dead) boobs, annoying Nuns, and an Axe-Wielding Santa Claus. It's also possibly the only film where a woman gets upset after being saved from attempted rape.

October 28th:

77. Alice, Sweet Alice (1976): Solid film with an incredibly creepy looking killer. I have to applaud Paula E. Sheppard (Alice) for playing her character to an almost delightfully demented level. That was probably my favorite thing about the entire film. The first half of this film is fantastic, but I felt that my interested waned in it's second half. This is mainly because of a plot twist that almost seems unnecessary. It's introduction takes a lot of the sting out of the first half of the film. Also the film is a little long, made longer by slow pacing. Also have to mention that the score is fantastic and really makes this feel like an American Giallo film.

78. April Fool's Day (1986): More of a "Funhouse" type Horror film than the Slasher genre it constantly gets lumped into. This could have been a straight-up Themed Slasher film and been fun. Problem here is that it's not and ends up being really dull. On the positive side, there is one hilarious scene featuring two friends and a water well. The ending didn't bother me, it was that the film felt like a Mystery-influenced Teen Sex Comedy that did.

October 29th:

79. Wrestlemaniac (2006): Average Stalker/Horror film. Only made sort-of fun by it's ridiculously goofy concept and short run time (75 minutes). Gore is pretty solid (face tearing!) here as well. Where the film does shine are it's great location/sets (the "Wrestling" ring is a great visual) and it's interesting mythos. It's hard not to laugh seeing legendary wrestler Rey Misterio Sr. (El Mascarado) stalk a handful of dumb-asses.

80. Body Bags (1993): Showtime Television Horror Anthology, along the lines of Tales From The Crypt. The film contains 2 segments Directed by John Carpenter (Halloween) and 1 from Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). Carpenter's segments, "The Gas Station" and "Hair" are both straight-to-the-point with the latter film being pretty funny. Hooper's segment, "Eye", is a little more drawn out/slow-paced but comes to an awesome conclusion. It's one of the great things about Horror Anthologies. The time limit is short, so they are always direct and don't meddle around with unnecessary characters/plot devices. Also worth mentioning is that John Carpenter is great as "The Coroner".

81. Faces Of Death (1978): The now infamous Mondo/Documentary series is pretty ingenious. Mixing stock footage with FX work (Allan A. Apone/Douglas J. White), the film constantly blurs what is real with what is not. Sometime it's pretty successful (Monkey Brain Dining) and sometimes it's pretty laughable (Bear Attack). By far the most disturbing aspects of the film are it's legit stock footage. Images from Concentration Camps as well as group Seal Clubbing are particularly chilling.

82. Shaun Of The Dead (2004):
It's insane to think that Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg's now Cult-Classic is 6 years old. The film's perfect balance of Comedy, Horror and Drama make it timeless. I seem to always catch something new every time I watch this film. CORNETTO!

October 30th:

83. Stay Alive (2006): Lord, the things you end up watching on TV during a late Saturday night. William Brent Bells' film is awful. It fails at every attempt at being scary. The only positive things I can say here are the random bits of humor are decent and the video game effects are interesting to look at. The audience (if there is any) for this film is just a little too limited. Stay awake! You might catch a glimpse at Peter Petrelli.

October 31st:

84. Daybreakers (2009): Last time the Spierig Brothers were on the scene, it was with their 2003 Zombie film, "Undead". It was extremely fun, but the writing was still suspect (especially in it's second half). Here the Spierig's return with a bang. Plot is solid and surprisingly fresh. The bits of gore (body explosions!) are extremely appreciated, though not overdone. The Vampiric World that the Spierig's create, is quite the sight. Also it's nice to see Willem Dafoe, Ethan Hawke and Sam Neill, all in a Vampire/Genre flick such as this one. They are all great in their roles, though Neill (Charles Bromley) feels limited compared to the other two. Looking for a Action/Vampire film that is a lot less Comedic (see the Blade Trilogy) and a little more fun? Here it is.

85. Dexter S05/E01 & E02 (2010):
It's hard to see early on where this season is headed only 2 episodes in. Most of their run time feels like an extension of Season 4, with a lot of questions, closure and blaming running rampant. It'll be interesting to see what void the "Kyle Butler" mystery will go to, as well as the "Roadkill" employee. I'm sort of hoping the cult angle goes somewhere. Not a fan of Christina Robinson (Astor), who has taken her character to near annoying levels so far this season.

86. Dexter S05/E03 & E04 (2010): Here we go. The storyline is starting to go somewhere. I'm still a little unsure if I like how many different things are going on so far. I'm anxious to see how far this "Santa Muerta" cult plot goes. I also like the new plot introduced with the inclusion of Julia Stiles' (10 Things I Hate About You) character Lumen. Still confused on what Quinn's (Desmond Harrington) role is in this season. The writers seem to be unsure why his character is around.

Re: The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread

Oct 1.
1. From Beyond:"Bit it off like a gingerbread man."
An underrated gem. It's not as funny as Re-Animator but it ups the gross-out factor with loads of oozing bodily mutation. The special effects are great and Jeffery Combs is always fun. B+
2. The Masque of the Red Death: "I won't kill you. I'll just cut you up a bit."
A pretty faithful adaptation of the Poe story. The color is fantastic and the atmosphere is claustrophobic and creepy. B
3. Carriers:"Sometimes choosing life is just choosing the more painful form of death."
Actual character development! A rarity for most modern horror. I liked that the virus was just a virus. Not a crazy virus or a zombie virus etc. Pet Peeve - At one point the characters are drinking what is clearly a Newcastle BROWN ale but the liquid inside is piss yellow. A small annoyance but it took me out of the film. C+

Oct 2.
4. The Brood:"Will you be my daddy?"
I love Cronenberg but this has always been my least favorite. That's not to say I don't like it, but I just don't find it as accomplished as his other works. Killer dwarf children in ski suits are surprisingly creepy though. B-
5. Cabin Fever:"Just go back inside, have yourself a big 40. Just Party"
Has some serious flaws but I still find it a lot of fun to watch. C+

Oct 3.
6. A Nightmare on Elm St. (2010):"Why are you screaming? I haven't even cut you yet."
Another needless remake. I enjoyed the Dawn of the Dead re-imagining and The Hills Have Eyes remake but those are sadly the exceptions that prove the rule. The acting is atrocious and Jackie Earle Haley's talent is wasted. D
7. Dr. Giggles:"You think that's bad, wait until you get my bill."
Good cheesy fun. The 90's weren't very good for the horror genre but this was a standout. Larry Drake is great as the doctor and the kills are inventive. B-

Oct 4.
8. The Exorcist II: The Heretic:"Do priests believe in ESP?"
Richard Burton and Max von Sydow in the same film. Shit's about to get real serious in here. Pazuzu turns into locusts and bothers Africans, mind melding machines...blah blah blah. This is a mess of a film, made even worse by how great the first one was. Oh and James Earl Jones wears a locust costume. Yep. F
9. Stuck: "People my age lose toes."
When a film starts off with an old man having shit sprayed off his ass you know what you're in for.
Gory and funny just like you'd expect from Stuart Gordon. Drags a bit in some places, but overall it's nice to watch a new idea. B-
10. It's Alive:"Lock it up, study it, but let it live."
I expected something much more over the top, but it was nice and subtle. The script is great and the acting is also top notch. John Ryan gives a terrific performance as the dad. For having a crazy subject matter everything comes off as very believable. The "baby" is the only weak point. Awful creature effects. B
11. The Exorcist III:"Jesus loves you, everyone else thinks your an asshole. "
Much much better than part 2 but still nowhere near the greatness that is the original. It was cool to see Father Damien again and George C. Scott chews up some scenery. The atmosphere is the best part of the film and for the most part the director shows restraint which really helps. C+

Oct 5. - Romero Fest
12. Day of the Dead:"Salute my ass."
Jesus I forgot how utterly unlikable most of these characters are. I realize that's the point, but man those military guys are complete scum. It's a pretty dark and hopeless film, but I love it.A
13. The Crazies:"I've got the goddamn bug!"
Romero does a good job of building tension as the film progresses. The themes are similar to what he would go on to use in the other Dead films. B
14. Creepshow:"Where's my cake!"
I've always loved Creepshow. One of the best anthology horrors around for sheer enjoyment. Sure it's not scary but it's such a good time I don't mind. Killer cast (pun intended), written by Stephen King, directed by Romero. What more could you want? B-
15. Monkey Shines:"You know me and needles, I put enough in there to bring down King Kong."
It's all fun and game 'til you piss off the helper monkey. What a great film. It builds up character and suspense during the first two thirds so that when all hell breaks loose in the final act it's that much more powerful. B+
16. Survival of the Dead:"Small towns breed small people."
Warring Irish redneck clans, really? That's the best story you could come up with for this one George? Unlike earlier Dead films, the social commentary is not subtle at all. It's way too cheesy/cartoonish. I like my Romero films bleak and dark. Just terrible all around. Also, CG and Romero should stay away from each other. The old school Savini effects were much more realistic. After watching a few of his other films today it makes me want to see a new one from him that isn't a zombie film. D-

Oct 6.
16. The Stepfather (2009):"I'm a bit of a wannabe carpenter."
Another garbage remake. I need to stop watching these. Mr. Nip/Tuck can't hold a candle to the great Terry O'Quinn. The only upside is that Amanda Heard is in a bikini or underwear everytime she's on screen. F
17. Isolation:
Killer mutant cows! This is an awesome gross out flick of the bodily horror variety. They use the less is more approach when showing the creature. This is so much better because it lets us imagine this horrible abomination slithering around. B

Oct 7.
18. Pin:"I bet you before they do it, mother washes his penis with spic 'n span."
What a strange film. A pretty good guide on how NOT to raise your children. There are lots of different psychological issues at play throughout and the incestuous undertone makes it that much more creepy. Ventriloquist dummies aren't the only spooky dummies. B+
19. Prowler:
A standard slasher. Follows the formula without much deviation. If you like slasher films, which I do, you'll enjoy it. Loses points for a stupid killer costume and the use of a shotgun by the slasher. Slasher villains do not shoot people. C

Oct 8.
20. Open House:"Tell my why every serial killer gets a cute nickname attached to it?"
Some guy is killing off real estate agents. Pretty average slasher in every way. Adrienne Barbeau is always good to see, but otherwise there isn't much to make this one stand out. C-
21. Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever:
I knew going into this that Ti West had disowned the film after the studio took it away from him and re-edited, so I'm not really surprised that it's a bit of a mess. He said he wanted to make a John Waters style movie with lots gore. That would have been great. It was nice to see Deputy Winston again and there is plenty of gore and gross out moments, but the pacing is off and the comedy moments fall flat for the most part. The final act of the film is the worst part and feel particularly disjointed. D
22. House of the Devil:
It's so nice to see a modern horror film that takes it's time and builds to a great climax. A

Oct 9.
23. Dexter S05E01/S05E02:
Season 5 is not off to a very good start for me. The storyline isn't engaging so far.

Oct 10.
24. Suspiria:
I've never been a fan of Italian horror. The overacting, dubbing and orange blood don't really do it for me. So even though Suspiria is usually praised I've never bothered to watch it. It's definitely the best Italian horror I've ever watched. It's beautifully filmed and the soundtrack is incredible. I didn't love it but I'm glad I gave it a chance. B-

Oct 11.
25. Silent Scream:
A pretty boring slasher from early in the genre. They try a bit too hard to copy Psycho with the knife stab shots punctuated with the string soundtrack. D+
26. Intruder:"I'm just crazy about this store."
A slasher that benefits from a great location. Old supermarkets are the best. Inventive kills and a cast that includes the Raimi bros. and Bruce Campbell. B
27. The House on Sorority Row:
Better than average slasher. The director has a nice camera style and the cast is relatively likable. The twist was easy to see but that's usually the case with these. B
28. Blood Diner:"This man has a meat cleaver in one hand and his genitals in the other."
Absurd film making at it's best. Ancient goddesses, faux vegetarian food, loads of gore and professional wrestling. B

Oct 12. Braaaains!
29. City of the Living Dead:
A ridiculous plot that usually gets a pass because it's a Fulci film. D
30. The Video Dead:"You might just end up gettin a nice sized bite taken out of your rear end."
B-Movie goodness all around. I really like the idea of the dead coming through your TV from old horror movies. Bad acting, bad make-up, good fun.B-
31. Dead Snow:
I enjoyed this but I felt like it just fell short of being great. Also, I don't consider the creatures in this to be zombies. Zombies don't wield knives, sprint, climb trees etc. I would have liked it better if they were just some sort of resurrected nazi super evil. C+

Oct 13.
32. Teen Wolf:"Never go out with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body."
A nostalgic favorite. I love that nobody bats an eye to a werewolf transforming on the basketball court. B

Oct 14. Carpenterama
33. In the Mouth of Madness:"Do you read Sutter Kane?"
I remember really liking this, but apparently it doesn't hold up very well. I found the dialogue and acting to be atrocious all around. There were gaping plot holes and some pretty bad editing. I find the core idea of what defines reality to be creepy but it just didn't feel that well executed. I don't know if the blame lies in the source material or the adaptation. C-
34. Prince of Darkness:"Pray for Death."
One of my faves. Donald Pleasence is great as usual and the take on satan is actually interesting. B+
35. The Fog:"We're honoring murderers."
Amazing cinematography by Cundey. A stellar cast: Jamie Lee, Tom Atkins, Adrienne Barbeau, Hal Holbrook, Janet Leigh Annie from Halloween! A
36. The Thing:"I'm a real light sleeper, Childs."
My second favorite Carpenter. The sense of paranoia and claustrophobia is perfect. The creature effects still hold up and Kurt Russell is a bad ass. A+

Oct 15.
37. Buffy S03E12/S03E13
38. Halloween II (2009)
Michael Myers becomes a dirty hobo and wanders the country with his ghost mom. The character of Loomis is ruined and the violence is overdone. F
39.Tremors(2009):"Underground goddamn monsters."
Just a blast plain and simple. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward are funny and likable. Most of the other townsfolk have decent characters and the creature effects are great. B

Oct 18.
40. Kairo:
For once a J-Horror that isn't about a long haired wet girl. Kurosawa builds the mystery up slowly with beautiful visuals. B
41.The Evil Dead(w/ Bruce Campbell Commentary)(2009):
Part 2 is one of the best horror films ever made, but if I want less comedy this is always the way to go. Just incredible. Bruce's commentary is fun and insightful. He loves to use the word cheeseball. A+
42. Without Warning:
Cheesy alien fx and some hammy acting from Jack Palance and Martin Landau make this stand out from the typical B-Movie schlock. Not great by a long shot but enjoyable and occasionally good. C-

Oct 19.
43. Buffy S03E14/S03E15:
44. Buffy S03E16/S03E17:
45. Buffy S03E18/S03E19:

Oct 20.
46. Buffy S03E20/S03E21:
47. My Bloody Valentine:
A pretty solid 80's slasher. The mine setting is great for a horror film. No nudity though. A slasher film without nudity is just wrong. B-
48. Buffy S03E22/S04E01: I really enjoyed the ending of Season 3. The mayor made a great villain. I'm interested to see where they take things now that high school is over.
49. Dexter S05E03/S05E04: The storyline is finally going somewhere.

Oct 21.
50. Buffy S04E02/S04E03:

Oct 22.
51. Splinter:
Wow. Having heard nothing about this movie I was pleasantly surprised. Great creature fx, strong character development and a decent amount of gore. A little bit of The Thing and Evil Dead 2. B-
52. Death Bed: The Bed That Eats:
What the hell did I just watch? So many random voice overs. An artist trapped in a limbo painting. A bed that digests people and chicken but not cigarettes. Gloriously bad in every possible facet. It's a much watch. B+ for fun F for the actual film

Oct 25.
53. The Thaw:
Very heavy handed with their message. It sort of reminded me of Cabin Fever without the humor. C
54. Buffy S04E02/S04E03:

Oct 26.
55. Thirst:
Other than Old Boy, I feel that Park's films are good but not great. This was no exception for me. It's beautifully filmed and mixes humor, horror and drama well with lots of gore (as you'd expect). It could have used some editing and some of the plot ideas aren't very fleshed out. B
56. Buffy S04E04/S04E05:
57. Sorority Row (2009):
A forgettable cast and a paint by numbers script. Decent gore and an R rating save it from being horrible. Also, Carrie Fisher as a shotgun toting house mother is pretty great. C

Oct 27.
58. Pandorum:
It's a cookie-cutter sci-fi horror, but I'm a sucker for scary movies set on derelict spacecraft. C+
59. Buffy S04E06/S04E07:
60. Piranha:

Oct 28.
61. Buffy S04E08/S04E09:

Oct 29.
62. The Crazies (2010):
I enjoyed this remake quite a bit. Timothy Olyphant is always great. B-
63. Friday the 13th Part 3:
64. Halloween:
As good as it gets. A+
65. The Black Cat:"Baloney, perhaps not."
Lugosi and Karloff! A-

Oct 30.
66. House of 1000 Corpses:

Oct 31.
67. Scream:
Talk of them making a fourth one made me revisit this. Matthew Lillard steals the show. B

Re: The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread

OCTOBER 1
1) LET ME IN - Competent but unnecessary remake of brilliant Swedish original. Good performances and atmosphere can't overcome major feeling of deja vu. *

2) HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY - Early 80's surrealism from Lucio Fulci. Great gore. I doubt I'll hear a better line of dialogue all month than "You really should take those pills your baker prescribed."

3) FEAR NO EVIL - Writer/director Frank LaLoggia's low budget epic about the final battle between good and evil is imaginative and ambitious. Lead Stefan Arngrim gives a good performance, but looks a bit too much like Seth McFarlane at times.

4) THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS - Icons abound in the horror genre's lone best picture winner.

OCTOBER 2
5) LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH - Creepy, weird and atmospheric. Zora Lampert is convincing as a woman unsure if the unsettling events she's witnessing is due to her fragile mental state, or supernatural events.

6) THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1921) - Cool set design help keep this early horror flick interesting. Briskly paced with a twist ending I have to admit I didn't see coming. *

OCTOBER 3
7) PHENOMENA - Dario Argento at his loopiest. Jennifer Connelly stars as an American high school girl at a Swiss boarding school dealing with the usual teenage stuff - Mean girls, entomology forensics, sleepwalking, homicidal mothers, maggots, deformed killers, psychic connections and a grieving chimpanzee hell bent on revenge. There's never a dull moment in this nutty flick. I wish "Mother of Tears" was half this much fun. *

8) PARANORMAL ACTIVITY - Dread filled, creepy and primal. The best of the verite horror films.

9) FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN - Despite the new setting, the most blandly generic of the F13 films. Bloodless and boring. The weird climax is kinda cool though. *

OCTOBER 4
I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE - Val Lewton + Jacques Tourneur = Moody thriller with brilliant black and white photography. *

OCTOBER 5
11) GRAVE OF THE VAMPIRE - Pretty good 70's vampire flick written by David (The Sopranos) Chase. *

OCTOBER 6
12) INSIDE - Brutal, unrelenting and merciless. One of the decade's best horror films.

OCTOBER 7
13) DAY OF THE DEAD (1985) - Entertaining but flawed third entry in Romero's zombie series. I still pine for the epic unfilmed original screenplay.

14) FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) - This was playing at a local theater tonight (the blu-ray menu before the movie started was a nice touch). Betsy Palmer is way cooler (and scarier) than Jason in one of my favorite horror flicks.

OCTOBER 8
15) FREAKS - Tod Browning's controversial classic is still unnerving. Thanks largely to the cast, the film works as a realistic look into life at a circus side show and as an EC style horror story. Unforgettable imagery during the rainy climax.

16) CUJO - Dee Wallace is terrific as a mother fighting for the survival of her son and herself against a rabid St Bernard in this top notch Stephen King adaptation. Grueling and intense, with great direction from Lewis Teague.

17) DON"T GO IN THE WOODS - Years ago, I was at a minor league hockey game and a guy in the stands kept yelling to one of the players..."You're terrible! You're absolutely terrible!". I thought about that guy a lot while watching this backwoods killer epic. Pretty good finale. *

OCTOBER 9
18) THE DEVIL RIDES OUT - Christopher Lee is the good guy in this Satanic cult thriller from Hammer Studios. 'Ole Scratch even makes an appearance in a cool makeup effect. *

19) GRADUATION DAY - Gialloesque slasher from the golden age isn't bad. Unusual murders and energetic editing help keep things interesting.

OCTOBER 10
20) DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK - Made for TV horror classic. The monsters are kinda silly, but the movie can still raise a few goosebumps.

21) LET'S KILL UNCLE - A kid's flick William Castle style! Pat (Horror High) Cardi plays a youngster involved in a deadly cat and mouse game with his uncle who's trying to kill him for his inheritance. Amusing, especially for Castle fans. *

22) SHIVERS - David Cronenberg's stellar debut feature. A sexually transmitted parasite invades an upscale highrise apartment complex with disturbing results. Cronenberg was already at the top of his game with this unique NOTLD riff.

OCTOBER 11
23) THE GORGON - Stylish Hammer horror from director Terence Fisher. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee are great but dont' have enough screen time together. Brilliant color cinematography. *

24) TRICK R TREAT - I could watch this one with the sound down and just soak up the rich visual atmosphere, but since the script is so much fun I don't.

OCTOBER 12
25) ISLE OF THE DEAD - Boris Karloff is good in melodrama from producer Val Lewton. Creepy climax. *

26) JASON X - After the boring "Takes Manhattan" and the depressing "Goes to Hell" this was a pleasant surprise. The gore is back and the plot is just stupid enough to be fun. F13 meets "Aliens". I had a blast with this. *

OCTOBER 13
27) HORROR ISLAND - Old dark house comedy/thriller from Universal. Some decent b/w photography, but ultimately unmemorable. *

OCTOBER 14
28) TERROR IN THE AISLES - Fun compilation of classic horror film clips. When this came out it was great to see scenes from some elusive movies, but with the easy availability of most of 'em now the impact is diluted a bit. It helps that most of the movies represented are fab.

OCTOBER 15
28) THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974) - Horror at its most primal. Tobe Hooper's masterpiece is a claustrophobic nightmare captured on film. A flawless horror classic.

OCTOBER 16
29) MAGIC - Excellent psychological horror film with Anthony Hopkins as a trouble magician/ventriloquist with the usual identity issues. I've loved this movie since seeing it in the theater back in '78. Top notch supporting cast and direction. Jerry Goldsmith's haunting score is the icing on the cake.

30) THE CHILDREN - School children mutate into zombies with a touch that kills after their bus drives through a radioactive cloud in this offbeat flick. Could be better paced, but still fun. Lots of kids are killed but it's so silly it's totally inoffensive.

31) WITCHFINDER GENERAL - Vincent Price's best movie is bitter, nihilistic masterpiece. Nothing is simple in Michael Reeves gut wrenching story of political, religious and moral corruption. One of the great ones.

OCTOBER 17
32) HALLOWEEN II (2009) - If you can get past the fact this is an unnecessary sequel to an unnecessary remake, it's not bad. Despited the flaws, I think Rob Zombie's two stabs at the Michael Myers saga are the only worthwhile entries in the mythos since the orignal.

33) ALONE IN THE DARK (1982) - Good thriller with four escaped mental patients terrorizing a doctor and his family. Interesting cast led by Martin Landau, Jack Palanace and Donald Pleasance. *

OCTOBER 18
34) CAT PEOPLE (1942) - Val Lewton potboiler with some effective scares. Cursed or crazy, Simone Simon is adorable.

OCTOBER 19
35) ONE DARK NIGHT - Pretty good 80's horror filck with high school girls trapped in a mausoleum with an evil psychic. Nice makeup effects and cool corpse filled climax. Features Meg Tilly in an early role.

36) DIE, MONSTER, DIE! - Boris Karloff in unsuccessful HP Lovecraft adaptation. Starts well, but gets silly. *

OCTOBER 20
37) APRIL FOOL'S DAY (1986) - A sense of humor and likable cast help keep this slasher entry entertaining. Twist ending, while good natured, makes much of what came before seem improbable.

OCTOBER 21
38) PSYCHO (1960) - The horror film was dragged kicking and screaming into the modern era with Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece.

39) HALLOWEEN 4: THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS - This so bad, it's almost good sequel is starting to grow on me. Ludicrous story but good atmosphere.

OCTOBER 22
40) PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 - Disappointing sequel to one of the best horror films in recent memory. A few good scares can't compensate for a repetitive script and needless exposition that contradicts the original. *

41) BASKET CASE 2 - It couldn't have been easy to cook up a sequel to BC, but Frank Henenlotter managed to make a doozy. Witty script and good performances.

42) TROLL 2 - I've managed to turn showings of this craptacular into a bit of a family event (who needs "The Wizard of Oz" anyway?). While watching, my 9 year old son did an impression of director Claudio Fragrasso. I've never felt more proud as a parent.

OCTOBER 23
43) JAWS: THE SHARKSPOLITATION EDIT - Clever reedit of Spielberg's classic turns the film into even more of a drive-in movie than it already was. Very cool, especially for viewers familiar with original. *

44) A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984) - After the sequels, TV series, toys and remake it's easy to forget what a gritty and creepy flick Wes Craven crafted to begin the series.

OCTOBER 24
46) THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW - Tim Curry almost bursts from the screen in Richard O'Brien's loving musical tribute to our beloved genre. Not a single bad song or performance in grand poobah of midnight movies.

47) FRIDAY THE 13TH: A NEW BEGINNING - Time has been kind to the fifth film in iconic series. Director Danny Steinman adds a sleazy atmosphere and dark humor that elevates the flick above some of the more generic entries.

48) PSYCHO IV: THE BEGINNING - Good performances and stylish direction can't overcome feeling that this is one sequel too many. The back story of Norman Bates was better left to the imagination. *

49) ARNOLD - Groovy black comedy details bizarre murders following marriage between woman and corpse. Roddy McDowell and Stella Stevens headline good cast. Twisted and funny - from Bing Crosby Productions.

OCTOBER 25
50) THE BODY SNATCHER - Superb Val Lewton production with great performance by Boris Karloff. Climax is unexpected and creepy. *

OCTOBER 26
51) CHAMBER OF HORRORS - Feels like the failed TV pilot it is, but still entertaining. Movie is interrupted by silly "Horror Horn" gimmick, warning of G rated mayhem to come. Would probably have been a decent TV series but lacks as feature film.

OCTOBER 27
52) PROPHECY (1979) - Director John Frankenheimer and writer David Seltzer could learn a thing of two from Bert I. Gordon when it comes to making giant monster movies.

OCTOBER 28
53) KILL, BABY...KILL! - Style oozes from every frame in Mario Bava's spooky ghost story. The spirit of a young girl haunts the residents of a small town, killing all she encounters. Creepy imagery. *

OCTOBER 29
54) A SERBIAN FILM - Rather than exploitive, film comes across as an uncompromising howl of anger and pain. Transgressive doesn't begin to describe atrocities unflinchingly depicted. Well made with a touch of political allegory. I expected to hate this, but have to admit I actually liked it. I can't recommend the movie to anyone, will never watch it again, but won't ever forget it. Powerful if you're up for it. *

55) FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD - Despite telekinetic twist, pretty generic entry in series. Great Jason makeup helps. A needed mind cleanse after SERBIAN gut punch.

56) BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR - Surprisingly good sequel to one of best horror flicks of 1980s. Not on par with original, but lovable characters and general wackiness make for an enjoyable watch. Unrated version has nice gore.

OCTOBER 30
57) THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE - Creepy haunted house flick with great 70's vibe. Resolution gets silly but otherwise top notch.

OCTOBER 31 HALLOWEEN
58) INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978) - A rare horror remake that readily surpasses original. Director Phillip Kauffman ups the paranoia and style as alien vegetation invades 1970's San Francisco. Well acted, stylishly directed, and great practical effects.

59) THE BOOGEY MAN (1980) - Ostensibly a ripoff of "Halloween" but actually not very similar at all. Writer/director Ulli Lommel's film is surreal and silly, with a genuine dream like atmosphere.

60) THE CHANGELING - Creepy haunted house flick with good performance from George C. Scott. *

61) THE EVIL DEAD - Sam Rami's goofy, gory demon fest is still just as much fun as it was 25 years ago.

62) NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) - George Romero's masterpiece gets better every year. No Halloween would be complete without it.

63) HALLOWEEN (1978) - John Carpenter's classic is damned near perfect. 'Nuff said.

Re: The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread

Goal of 31, same as last couple years. Started strong, but usually only ended up with like 10 flicks. I'm planing on starting Buffy on Oct. 1, so I think I may have a chance of reaching my goal this year.

Re: The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread

First Time Viewing in italics

October 1
1) I Sell The Dead (2008, Movie Channel HD) - "Never Trust a Corpse"...A convicted grave robber tells his story to a priest before execution. An enjoyable horror comedy. Not nearly as good as it could have been but entertaining enough. Movie 3/5 Disc N/A

2) Pontypool (2008, Movie Channel HD) - Silly story about certain words turning people zombies. I read good things about this movie but I didn't dig it. Other than a couple of good moments I found it a bit boring. Movie 2/5 Disc N/A

October 2
3) Horror of Dracula (1958, TCM) - Hammer classic! Movie 5/5 Disc N/A

4) The Crazies (2009, Blu-Ray) - Re-make of Romero original gets it right. I like this flick a lot. Good story, good pacing. Movie 4/5 Disc 4/5

5) Van Helsing (2004, DVD) - Over blown "blockbuster". There are things I like about this movie & things I hate. Very frustrating because it could have been so much better. Movie 3/5 Disc 4/5

6) Brides of Dracula (1960, TCM) - Another Hammer classic! Actually my personal favorite of all the Hammer films. Movie 5/5 Disc N/A

7) Devil's Den (2006, ShoHD) - Kelly Hu & Ken Foree battle she demon strippers....Seriously....Rip off of From Dusk Til Dawn manages to entertain, especially when Kelly Hu starts karate kicking the demon chicks! Movie 3/5 Disc N/A

October 3
8)Night of the Living Dead (1968, DVD) - "They're coming to get you Barbera"...The grand daddy of all zombie movies. Movie 5/5 Disc 4/5

9)Dawn of the Dead (1978, Blu-Ray) - "When there is no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the earth"...Still fun after all these years. One of my favorite horror movies. Movie 5/5 Disc 4/5

10) Return of the Living Dead (1985, Blu-Ray) - "More Brains" ...Classic flick! Looks good on Blu-Ray. Movie 5/5 Disc 4/5

October 4
11)30 Days of Night: Dark Days (2010, Blu-Ray) - Story takes place 1 year after the events of the first film. Stella trys to convince the world that Vampires exist. Based on the graphic novel by Steven Niles (who also writes the screenplay here). This movie has a much darker, grittier tone than the first. Not great, but still very enjoyable and recommended for fans of the book. Hopefully they will complete the trilogy. Movie 3.5/5 Disc 3.5/5

October 5
Nothing tonight.......Went to see Slash rock the House of Blues

October 6
12)The House of the Devil (2009, Blu-Ray) - Finally got to see this one. I am happy to say all the hype was true. Slow build up but the tension remains high. Definate throw back to 80's style horror. The Blu-Ray is PQ is nothing special. Movie 3.5/5 Disc 3/5

13)Dracula, Prince of Darkness (1966, TCM) - Another classic from Hammer. The first true sequal to Horror of Dracula. C. Lee returns but Cushing is absent. A good example of Hammer's gothic style. I have the disc but elected to watch the TCM version (via DVR). Movie 4.5/5 Disc N/A

October 7
14)Splinter (2010, PPVHD) - Modern Frankenstein story. This time with a pair of gene splicing scientists, Clive & Elsa (wink wink). Kind of a cross between Cronenberg's The Fly & Species. Enjoyable but I wouldn't feel the need to see it again anytime soon. Cool "creature" design. Movie 3.5/5 Disc N/A

15)Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (1969, TCM) - Hammer sequal to Dracula Prince of Darkness. Christopher Lee returns in another Hammer classic, Filmed at the height of their success. The Dracula movies started to go down hill a bit from here. Movie 4/5 Disc N/A

October 8
- Nothing -

October 9
16) The Gorgon (1964, TCM) - Peter Cushing & Christopher Lee elevate this Hammer film. A Hammer take on the "Medusa" mythology. Creature Feature fun! Movie 3.5/5 Disc N/A

17)The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb (1964, DVD) - Fun Hammer follow up to the Mummy. Originally released as a double feature with the Gorgon. Movie 4/5 Disc 3.5/5

18)Hatchet (2007, Blu-Ray) - Not sure how this one flew under my radar for so long. Old school slasher. Only complaint is I would have ended it a bit differently. Movie 4/5 Disc 4/5

19) Day of the Dead (2008, ShoHD) - "Loose" remake of the Romero classic. Fun movie with Zombies that are more consistant with the 2004 version of Dawn of the Dead. Very entertaining if you get past the Romero remake bit & accept it for what it is. I will probably pick up this one up for my library. Movie 4/5 Disc N/A

October 10
20)Descent 2 (2009, DVD) - Entertaining follow up to Neil Marshal's original. Marshal served ony as producter for this sequal. This film trades more creatures and more action for the claustrophobia of the first film. Fun flick but I'm not sure about the ending....Movie 3.5/5 Disc 4/5

21)A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010, Blu-Ray) - I liked this better the second time around. maybe it's because my expectations were much lower. Of the "big 3" re-makes (Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers), this is my least favorite. I know many people hate Rob Zombie's take on Halloween (I was one who liked them), but at least he tried something original. Even the Friday the 13th movie changed things a bit. Jack Earle Haley did a descent enough job as Freddy, but so much of what we identify as Freddy is due to Robert Englund. Tough shoes to fill. Movie 3/5 Disc 4/5

22) The Reptile (1966, TCM) - Classic example of mid 60's Hammer horror. Movie 3.5/5 Disc N/A

October 11
Two from the zombie master George A. Romero.....

23)Survival of the Dead (2009, Blu-Ray) - Sarge Crocket, briefly seen in Diary of the Dead, and company get in the middle of a family feud on a remote island. Who is right & who is wrong? Typical Romero humor & message. Disc has a couple of pretty good interviews with Romero. Movie 4/5 Disc 4/5

24)Land of the Dead (2005, Blu-Ray) - Big budget zombies....Movie 4/5 Disc 4/5

October 12
25)Slumber Party Massacre (1982, DVD) - A prime example of an early 80's slasher. The picture on this new DVD release shows its age at times, but for me that's part of the charm. Movie 4/5 Disc 3/5

26)Slumber Party Massacre 2 (1987, DVD) - Released right in the middle of the direct-to-video horror movies and MTV revolutions. This one plays out like an extended episode of "Freddy's Nightmares" TV show (that should give a hint as to the quality). Just replace Freddy with a dude that looks like a rocker version of Andre Dice Clay & you got it. So bad its good......Movie 2.5/5 Disc 3.5/5

October 13
27)Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981, Blu-Ray) - Easily my favorite of the series. Jason was just plain scary in this one. Movie 4.5/5 Disc 4/5

28)His Name was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th (2009, DVD) - Descent, but not great retrospecitve of the series. I did rather enjoy the interviews of the "men behind the mask" on the first disc. Movie 3.5/5 Disc 4.5/5

October 14
29)Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982, Blu-Ray) - Jason gets his hockey mask. The picture quality of this blu-ray is slightly lower than part 2. Not bad & I will certainly take it over having it ruined with DNR. Movie 4/5 Disc 3.5/5

October 15
Two absolute classics from the 80's.....

30)The Thing, John Carpenter's (1982, Blu-Ray) - Nothing really needs to be said here. Great flick! Movie 5/5 Disc 4.5/5

31)Re-Animator (1985, DVD) - I never tire of watching this one! We need a blu-ray version Movie 5/5 Disc 4/5

October 16
32) The Mummy (1959, TCM) - Hammer classic...Their first film after forming an agreement with Universal for access to their monster properties. Christopher Lee becomes the only person to play Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Mummy. A must have disc for fans of classic horror. I have this disc, but watched it this time on TCM. Movie 5/5 Disc N/A

33)Halloween, Rob Zombie's (2007, Blu-Ray) - I went to a local Horror fest today & met Ken Foree & Sybil Danning so I decided to watch this one tonight. Both actors has small parts in this film. I have said this before, but I like this film. Sure it's not perfect, but Rob Zombie tried to do something different. Judged on its own merits (not compared to the original masterpiece), this is a descent flick IMHO. I like it more each time I watch it. Michael Myers here is brutal & relentless. This will probably always be one of those "either you love it or hate it" films. For me I fall into the former category. Movie 4/5 Disc 4.5/5

October 17
34) Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (1972, TCM) - One of the better films from 70's era Hammer. Based on a story from Bram Stoker. Movie 3/5 Disc N/A

35)Halloween 2 (2009, Blu-Ray) - Again, Rob Zombie trying to do something different here. Some things worked here and others missed the mark. The film feels a bit "rushed" at times. Say what you will, but he has an eye for imagery. I'm a little disappointed that the blu-ray didn't include the theatrical cut of the movie. Movie 4/5 Disc 4/5

36)The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue (1974, Blu-Ray) - Tense movie with great atmosphere. A different spin on what caused a zombie outbreak. Movie 4/5 Disc 4/5

October 18
37)Friday the 13th (2009, Blu-Ray) -

38)The Masque of the Red Death (1964, DVD) - One of the more mediocre flicks from the Price-Coreman collaborations. Vincent Price is always worth watching though. Movie 3/5 Disc 3.5/5

October 19
39)The Wolfman (2010, Blu-Ray) - I really like the theatrical cut of this movie. It moves along at a much better pace than the extended version. The wolfman design is great. It resembles the original only more ferocious. Del Toro was an ideal choice for larry Talbot. The story isn't perfect, but again this is where I say at least they tried something a little different. This flick gets even better with multiple viewings. Now we need a sequal like "Return of the Wolfman" or "Revenge of the Wolfman". What do ya say Universal? Movie 4/5 Disc 5/5

40)The Wolfman (1941, DVD) - The orignal is still the best. Kind of fun to watch after & compare it to the 2010 version. The PQ on the legacy collection disc is a little disappointing. A lot of digital noise. More so than I remember from the Dracula or Frankenstein discs. I'll have to compare it to some other versions of the movie I have in my collection at some point. Movie 5/5 Disc 3.5/5

October 20
41)Night of the Demons (2009, Blu-Ray) - A fun movie that was definately a labor of love for the director & producer. It makes a difference when the people involved are fans of the genre. A really good soundtrack also! As a side note, according to the producer, they will be remaking another horror flick from the 80's called Witchboard. The original starred Tawny Kitaen......Movie 4/5 Disc 4/5

October 21
42) The Frighteners (1996, DVD) - This movie always reminds me the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland for some reason. Looking forward to the Blu-Ray upgrade. Movie 4.5/5 Disc 4/5

October 22
A night of classics....
43)Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman (1943, DVD) - My favorite as a kid! Great opening sequence in the graveyard. Here's hoping Universal will re-visit the discs for their "lesser" monster flicks. Movie 4.5/5 Disc 3.5/5

44)House of Frankenstein (1944, DVD) - See above. Made ven better with the return of Boris Karloff!...Movie 4.5/5 Disc 3.5/5

45) The Raven (1963, DVD) - Boris Karloff squares off with Vincent Price. Also starring Hazel Court, Peter Lorre, and a very young Jack Nicholson. This movie has always been a favorite of mine. Hopefully some of these Poe/Coreman classics will get a disc upgrade Movie 4/5 Disc 3/5

October 23
46)Freddy vs. Jason (2003, Blu-Ray) - The horror fans dream match up. Freddy is much meaner with less wise cracking. The actor that played Jason did a pretty good job, but the role should have went to Kane Hodder. I'm surprised we never got a sequal. Movie 4/5 Disc 4/5

47)Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988, DVD) - Probably my favorite version of Jason. Kane Hodder does a great job here as Jason finds new ways to use garden tools! Movie 4/5 Disc 4/5

48)Going to Pieces: The Rise & Fall of the Slasher Film (2006, EncoreHD) - An average documentary. Includes interviews with Tom Savini, John Carpenter, and Wes Craven among others. Movie 3/5 Disc N/A

October 24
49)Laid to Rest (2009, TCMHD) - Bad flick. Made no sense & just plain boring. Movie 1/5 Disc N/A

50)28 Weeks Later (2007, Blu-Ray) - Great follow up to Danny Boyle's original. Action is kicked up a couple of notches. Movie 4.5/5 Disc 4/5

51) Return of the Living Dead Part 2 (1988, DVD) - A classic! Movie 4/5 Disc 3/5

October 25
52)Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988, DVD) - Danielle Harris debut. Follows similar formula to the original. Movie 4/5 Disc 4/5

53)Inside Story: Halloween (2010, A&E HD) - An interesting & up-to-date documentary. probably nothing groundbreaking, but covers movies through the Rob Zombie flicks. Movie 4/5 Disc N/A

October 26
54)The Grudge (2004, DVD) - Still a very effective & scary movie. I watched the unrated director's cut. I didn't notice a lot of differences except a few subtle additions during the final act. Movie 4/5 Disc 4/5

October 27
55)Halloween H20 (1998, DVD) - Jaimie Lee Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode set 20 years after the original movie. It was supposed to be the diffinitive swan song for Michael Myers. She wanted John Carpenter to direct but he declined for some reason. Steve Miner does a descent job closing out the Laurie Strode trilogy (not counting her brief appearance in resurrection). The disc I have is not anamorphic. I checked but it doesn't seem like one is available. An upgrade to this disc is needed. Movie 4/5 Disc 2/5

October 28
56)Night of the Creeps (1986, Blu-Ray) - An 80's classic! Movie 5/5 Disc 4.5/5

57)Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986, DVD) - Great entry in the series. Movie played a little tongue & cheek. The "James Bond" openining title credits is classic. Movie 4/5 Disc 4.5/5

October 29
58)Fright Night (1985, DVD) - Another 80's classic! Hopefully the remake will do it justice. Movie 5/5 Disc 3.5/5

59) The Curse of Frankenstein (1958, TCM) - Hammer Classic! Movie 5/5 Disc N/A

60) The Revenge of Frankenstein (1959, TCM) - Peter Cushing returns as the mad doctor. Another great one from Hammer. Movie 5/5 Disc N/A

October 30
61) White Zombie (1932, TCM) - An underrated zombie flick with Bela Lugosi. Movie 4/5 Disc N/A

62)Trick r' Treat (2007, Blu-Ray) - Great film that will be a yearly staple for me. Movie 5/5 Disc 4.5/5

63) Halloween (1978, DVD) - I watched the television cut of the film that adds the sister backstory. Pretty good version & fun to see it a little differently. Movie 5/5 Disc 4/5

64)Frankenstein (1931, amc) - A classic for Halloween! I have different versions of this on disc, but couldn't resisit the amc Fear Fest showing. Movie 5/5 Disc N/A

Halloween
65)The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003, Blu-Ray) -

Re: The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread

Final count: 37 films.

Goal: 50 films
FTV=First Time Viewing
All titles viewed on DVD!

Oct 1:
1. Flesh & Blood: The Hammer Heritage of Horror (1994)--It had been a while since I had seen this, so I thought that this documentary would be a good way to start things off. Overall, it's an excellent look at the history of Hammer, with the necessary interviews and comments from the appropriate people (Cushing, Lee, Sangster, etc). Not much to complain about here, except for the 4:3 AR and the poor condition of many of the film clips. 8/10 stars.
2. "Pigeons from Hell", Thriller S1-- Starting my first-time-viewings off with one based on a Weird Tales story by the great Robert E. Howard. A lot of people consider this the best Thriller episode, but it lost a bit of impact for me since I was already familiar with the story. Still, it was very well done, and surprisingly bloody for 1961 television. FTV, 8/10 stars.
"Pigeons from Hell" commentary-- A good analysis of the episode and its participants. They pointed out a few things that I didn't notice on the FTV, but I noticed that they didn't point out the influence that this episode probably had on The Birds.
3. "The Grim Reaper", Thriller S1-- Imaginative direction from Daugherty and an excellent script by Bloch pushes this one way above average. FTV, 8.5/10 stars.
"The Grim Reaper" commentary-- It's a shame that Shatner couldn't have been present for the commentary, but since he wasn't, the commentators get to make fun of him.

Oct 2:
4. The Curse of the Werewolf (1961)--I love the look of the monster, but I remain disappointed with the film. Too much about the curse and not enough about the werewolf. I've never seen a film try harder to gather sympathy for the main character--it's almost like a chick-flick. Sorry, I didn't cry at the end. 6.5/10 stars.
5. "The Return of Andrew Bentley", Thriller S2--I'm just skipping around on the Thriller set as there's no reason to watch them in order. This particular episode was a bit too cheesy for my tastes. The "special" effects for the demon were awesomely bad, and the way the demon acted was even worse. The plot was absurd, like a bad comic book story. , 6/10 stars.
"The Return of Andrew Bentley" commentary--Yep, I liked the commentary better than the episode itself.
6. "Dialogues with Death", Thriller S2--Fairly entertaining, especially with Karloff in the cast of both stories. FTV, 7.5/10 stars.
"The Remarkable Mrs. Hawk", Thriller S2--A great cast (Carradine, Dern, van Fleet) makes this wacky story a good watch. FTV, 7/10 stars.

Oct 3:
7. The Witches (1967)--This is one I had put off viewing for quite a while. Overall, I think Fontaine was good with her part, but I could have done without the witchdoctor opening scene, especially since it left the viewer with more questions than answers. The ritual scene was both weird and funny, which isn't a bad thing...but it would have been better if this film had been made in the '70s, for obvious reasons. FTV, 6.5/10 stars.[/

Oct 4:
8. Four of the Apocalypse (1975)--Spaghetti Western Horror...not just because Fulci directed it, but because it has torture, rape, cannabilism, and a guy who talks to dead people. I enjoyed the film somewhat, although it was certainly tedious at times (Massacre Time was much better!) The most profound horror element was the terrible soundtrack, yet I can't rate the film too low because of some great acting (mostly Milian). FTV, 6.5/10 stars.

Oct 5:
9. Cemetary Man (1996)--I watched this because I thought The Church was a pretty good film (and the main reason I watched it was because Keith Emerson did the soundtrack). But, I was mostly bored by this one. The sets looked good enough, but the special effects were hardly special--visible strings on floating/flying objects? C'mon, it had the values of a no-budget student film at times. FTV, 6.0/10 stars.

Oct 6:
10. The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959)--Still going through the few Hammers in my collection that I have never seen all of. I thought this one was good enough; it certainly had a Hammer feel to it, but stayed true enough to the source...as least Cushing's Holmes wasn't a mentally ill action-hero. It's a shame that Hammer didn't make a series of these, and not leave this one as a solitary oddity. FTV, 7.0/10 stars

Oct 7:
11. "The Incredible Doktor Markesan", Thriller S2--The perfect episode for fans of Karloff. FTV, 8.0/10 stars
"The Incredible Doktor Markesan", commentary.

Oct 8:
12. "Cousin Tundifer", Thriller S2--This one was more like an episode of The Twilight Zone, but went on too long. FTV, 6.5.0/10 stars
"Masquerade", Thriller S2--One of the funny episodes, and actually pretty good. FTV, 8.0/10 stars

Oct 9:
13. "Man of Mystery", Thriller S2--One of my favorite episodes so far, based on an interesting concept. FTV, 7.5.0/10 stars
"Man of Mystery", commentary.

Oct 10:
14. "Waxworks", Thriller S2--I've seen this story done too many times to appreciate it. FTV, 6.5.0/10 stars
"Waxworks", commentary.

Oct 11:
15. "La Strega", Thriller S2--A good-enough episode, but the casting of Andress and Rey makes it a must-see FTV, 8.0/10 stars
"La Strega", commentary one.

Oct 12:
16. "The Last of the Somervilles", Thriller S2--Not a great episode, but the inclusion of Karloff in the cast makes it worthwhile. FTV, 7.0/10 stars
"La Strega", commentary two.

Oct 13:
17. "The Storm", Thriller S2--Plenty of old-house atmosphere...maybe too much. FTV, 6.5/10 stars
"The Storm", commentary.

Oct 14:
18. "A Third for Pinochle", Thriller S2--This one just seems too familiar. FTV, 6.5/10 stars
"A Third for Pinochle", commentary.

Oct 15:
19. "Letter to a Lover", Thriller S2--Just too slow-moving for my tastes. FTV, 6.0/10 stars
"The Closed Cabinet", Thriller S2--Apparently not a fan favorite, but I liked it. FTV, 7.5/10 stars

Oct 16:
20. "Guillotine", Thriller S2--I've come to really like Rey's appearances on various shows of the era. FTV, 8.0/10 stars
"What Beckoning Ghost?", Thriller S2--Wow, was this ever hokey!. FTV, 6.0/10 stars

Oct 17:
21. "The Premature Burial", Thriller S2--A nice remake of the classic story, with Karloff in the cast too. FTV, 7.0/10 stars
"The Premature Burial", commentary.

Oct 18:
22. "The Weird Tailor", Thriller S2--This has to be my favorite episode of the whole series...very well done and especially violent for the era. FTV, 9.0/10 stars
"The Weird Tailor", commentary.

Oct 19:
23. Inferno (1980)--This one was in my collection for various reasons, including the fact that Keith Emerson did the score. For once, I have to totally agree with the accepted critcisms of this film. Emerson's score was excellent, but totally inappropriate for this movie and made even worse by the poor editing of it. The mood and atmosphere slip away, and nothing about the film seems right. FTV, 6.5/10 stars.

Oct 20:
24. Let the Right One In (2008)--Despite all the praise for this film, I found as many things wrong with it as right. Most of the movie was lit brighter than a '60s sit-com...I've seen ABBA videos with more atmosphere. The script was childish, mainly because kids did most of the talking. Important plot points were absent, requiring the viewer to research the book to make sense of things. Good enough movie for the genre, but hardly great. FTV, 7.5/10 stars.
25. Splice (2009)--Lovable nerds cause problems at work and spout techno-babble...it's like a John Cusack film. I'll give it an extra star for not actually having Cusack in it. FTV, 6.5/10 stars.
26. Predators (2010)--Some people die. Some predators die. Is there a point to any of this? FTV, 5.5/10 stars.

Oct 21:
27. "Dexter"/"Crocodile", Dexter S1
28. "Popping Cherry" / "Let's give the Boy a Hand", Dexter S1
29. "Love American Style"/ "Return to Sender", Dexter S1
30. "Circle of Friends"/ "Shrink Wrap", Dexter S1[/B] --My second viewing of the first season of this great show. The first time around, I didn't really notice all the ways that Dexter's father groomed him to be a killer for a good cause. It was almost like a superhero's origin story. 9.0/10 stars

31. Little Shop of Horrors (Rifftrax) (1960)--I had never seen this all the way through, and now I remember why. 3 stars for the film, 7 stars for the Rifftrax commentary.FTV, 5.0/10 stars.

Oct 26:
32. Psycho (1960)-- The more I see it, the more I realize what a great film it is. 9.5/10 stars.

Oct 27:
33. Psycho II (1983)-- A fairly good film, it just faces the reality that it can never compare to the first one. 8.0/10 stars.
34. Psycho III) (1986)-- Not terrible, but suffers from sequelitis. 6.5/10 stars.

Oct 30:
35. The Abominable Snowman (1957)-- I enjoyed the snowbound shots, and the story was fairly rich. I thought the buildup whimpered out though. FTV, 7.0/10 stars.
36. The Abominable Snowman commentary

Oct 31:
37. Jonah Hex (2010)-- A spaghetti western with horror elements mixed in, and there was nothing terribly wrong with it. I'm amazed that it ran only 76 minutes and had an incredibly long end-credits sequence to get the running time over 80 minutes.FTV, 7.0/10 stars.
