02. V: Welcome to the War (2010)* / V: Pound of Flesh (2010)*

July 2
03. Predator 2 (1990)* Definitely a step below the original, but still entertaining. 6/10

Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - List Thread

Then I'll take this one

*First-time viewing

7/1
1. Star Trek 2009
7/2
2. Ponyo
7/3
3. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time*
7/8
4. Despicable Me*
5. The Time Traveler's Wife*
5.5. Defying Gravity: Pilot episode*
6. Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
7/10
7. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (theatrical)
8. Monsters vs. Aliens
9. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs*
7/11
10. The Book of Eli*
7/12
11. Planet Terror*: Missed this in theaters so bought this and Death Proof for 9.99 each, but it's ironic to have these on Blu because of the intentional scratchiness (didn't discover the "clean" play option till afterward). Not a huge zombie fan so this might not have a lot of replay value, but I do like Rodriguez and his vibe so I was entertained.
7/13
12. Soylent Green*: First time watching though I knew the "secret" years ago
7/17
13. Forbidden Planet*: Loved it! Can't believe I've watched all that Trek OS and never seen this. Anne Francis
7/18
14. Aeon Flux*: Didn't expect much other than eye candy, but the concept turned out to be interesting
7/27
15. Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (wild card)
16. Children of Men*
17. GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra*: I felt dumber after watching this
7/30
18. The Golden Compass: Nicole Kidman is so cold she's hot. Wish they had made the sequels.
19. Captain Sindbad*: Cheesball effects compared to Harryhausen but entertaining. Warner Archive DVD-R wouldn't play on my laptop's PowerDVD program but worked fine in my PS3.
20. The Golden Voyage of Sinbad: Had to pick one and went for this after the discussion in the Harryhausen Blu poll thread
7/31
21. Serenity: For the umpteenth time, but still love it and Joss's intro
22. Dragonslayer*: Effects hold up pretty well 30 years later.
23. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief*: It was pretty much the Clash of the Titans-lite I expected, but there was some cleverness to it

Giving in and adding a checklist on 7/10:

I'll give it a shot. Even though I don't expect to do very well.

July 1 -
1. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - Pilot. I looked it up on IMDB and it say "Sci-Fi." I have not seen this show since it's original viewing back in the day and it's still as fun as I remember.
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey - Yikes, been a long time (really, really) since I last saw this. What drugs, exactly, was Kubrick on?
3. Babylon 5 - A Call to Arms: I quite enjoyed it and it sets the scene for the short-lived series, Crusade. Most striking though was the lack of Christopher Franke's score. I guess you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.

July 2
4. Children of Men - What a movie! It has a place in my top 10 sf movies of all time. Chilling, brutal and unrelenting.
5. Torchwood Season 1 - Episode 9 - Saving Eugene / Episode 10 - Out of Time: Two episodes that feature no enemies and no aliens, just people (and I'm a sucker for time travel stories!)

July 4
6. Race to Witch Mountain - Well, I liked it...
7. Crusade Season 1 - Episode 9 - Racing The Night / Episode 11 - The Needs of Earth: Finally watching this after all these years and doing it in JMS' preferred order. But does Gary Cole get less wooden?

July 5
8. Spaceballs! - I see your Schwartz is as big as mine!

July 6
9. Spaceballs! The Commentary! - Mel Brooks endlessly kibitzing (at least I think that's what he's doing)
10. Torchwood Season 1 - Episode 11 - Combat / Episode 12 - Captain Jack Harkness: Combat was a riff on Fight Club (I saw that coming a mile away) and Episode 12 was more time travel....Captain Jack? Meet Captain Jack and then, y'know, get to know him better.

July 7
11. Torchwood Season 1/2 - Episode 13 - End of Days / Season 2 Episode 1 - Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang: More back story on Captain Jack, but more questions than answers
12. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms - What can I say? I loved the scenery and the Harryhausen monster.
13. Wanted - The Comic Book Adaptation that shared not much more beyond the title and the character names (but there's some good action sequences)

July 8
14. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - Episode 2 - Socrates Sister / Episode 3 - The Orb Scholar: More Brisco goodness! Guest appearance by Robert Picardo. I like the bit with the thumb.
15. Where the Wild Things Are - Annoying kid, great creatures. Yeah, I know...lots of symbolism. Still, I didn't feel like there was any real payoff.
16. Idiocracy - Finally! An accurate representation of the future.

July 9
17. Crusade Episode 11 - The Memory of War / Episode 2 - The Long Road (JMS Order)
18. A Boy And His Dog - Worth it if only for the ending.
19. Hydra - Truly horrible HBO movie

July 10
20. Torchwood Season 2 - Episode 2 - Sleeper / Episode 3 - To The Last Man: Great episodes, Sleeper was particularly chilly.

July 11
21. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - Episode 4 - No Man's Land / Episode 5 - Brisco in Jalisco: I feel like I'm cheating including this on the list but what fun! There's a great shootout scene between at least a couple of dozen opponents where NO-ONE gets shot but there is more flying lead than you can shake a stick at! Very A-Team!!

July 12
22. Jurassic Park - Hadn't seen this in years but still remember the awe when I first saw it in theatres (no, it's not art...I know)

July 13
23. Crusade Episode 12 - Visitors from Down The Street / Episode 3 - The Well of Forever: Episode 12 had a great twist on the Abduction/Conspiracy thing and Episode 3 left me scratching my head as to what went on between Babylon 5 and Crusade. I should be getting into this show just as I run out of episodes.
24. Jurassic Park II - The Lost World - Not as good as the first but still great fun.
25. Virtuality - Pilot: Sadly, it didn't go beyond there. I think it shares a lot with Defying Gravity and I suppose only one could be a go. The bombs for propulsion was a cool effect.

July 14
26. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - Episode 6 - Riverboat / Episode 7 - Pirates: Continues to be implausible and slightly ridiculous and yet I love it more and more!
27. Jurassic Park III - Another popcorn movie.
28. Torchwood Season 2 - Episode 4 - Meat / Episode 5 - Adam: Creepy, great and imaginative. I'm lamenting there not being a hundred episodes of this show.

July 15
29. Star Trek: Insurrection - Fun. Played like a souped up episode of the series.
30. 2010: The Year We Make Contact - Great ending, certainly more watchable than 2001 (I know...sacrilege!)
31. The Black Hole - Judd Nelson saves the world! It doesn't get much more implausible than that...
32. Crusade Episode 13 - Each Night I Dream of Home / Episode 5 - Patterns of the Soul: The first featuring B5's Tracy Scoggins and Richard Biggs and more insight into the plague. The second featured Canada sitting in for Theta 9 and Brian Thompson not playing some psychotic killer.

July 16
33. Superman/Batman - Public Enemies: I wasn't sure what to expect going in but this thing rocked beginning to end barely giving the viewer a chance to catch his breath...might have to try the other DC stuff.
34. Logan's Run - Every few years I watch this I keep expecting it to be kitschy and out-dated but it holds up really quite well.
35. Logan's Run (commentary) - I noticed on the back that there was a commentary track with the director and Michael York and the costume designer, didn't know they recorded them at separate times. York is dryer then I expected him to be. Did you know Jon Voight was supposed to play Logan and Lindsay Wagner Jessica?

July 17
36. Torchwood Season 2 - Episode 6 - Reset / Episode 7 - Dead Man Walking: Martha Jones from Dr. Who in these and it looks like things are ramping up.

July 18
37. X-Men - Is this now the "early days" of new superhero movies? "You're a dick." is still a great line.
38. The Book of Eli - Wasn't everything I was expecting it to be.

July 19
39. The Last Sentinel - Katee Sackhoff in a completely pointless and poorly written post-apocalyptic story.
40. The Matrix - Still rocks!! And Carrie-Ann Moss....hubba hubba!
41. Crusade Episode 4 - The Path of Sorrows / Episode 6 - Ruling From The Tomb - Some background into the Psi-Corps War which was interesting. But JMS' order is leaving me cold as Lochleys and Gideons relationship gets all time-weird.

July 20
42. Star Wars - "Don't act so surprised, your highness. You weren't on any mercy mission this time." Gave rise to freeform quoting of Star Wars in order to establish your geekdom. Unbelievable this was done pretty much at the same time as Logan's Run and the effects are night and day.
43. Torchwood Season 2, Episode 8 - A Day in the Death / Episode 9 - Something Borrowed

July 21
44. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - Episode 8 - Senior Spirit / Episode 9 - Brisco for the Defense: Interesting that Brisco can likely "get the girl" but he doesn't always
45. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Just a beautiful movie. The fight sequences, wirework notwithstanding, are just brilliant!

July 22
46. The Empire Strikes Back - the best of the Star Wars movies, never lets up! I don't know how many times I've seen this but it just commands my attention beginning to end.
47. Torchwood Season 2 - Episode 10 - From Out of the Rain / Episode 11 - Adrift
48. Crusade Episode 7 - The Rules of the Game / Episode - War Zone: The Babylon 5 Lurker's Guide tells me this is the order to watch this stuff in but it has really made no sense!
49. Crusade Episode 8 - Appearances and other Deceits - So that's that. It was definitely JMS but jumbled, could've been a combination of Network interference and the goofy order I watched it in / The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - Showdown: Okay, he got the girl this time.

July 23
50. Torchwood Season 2 - Episode 12 - Fragments / Episode 13 - Exit Wounds - The End...with James Marsters! Or Torchwood origins just like Firefly - Out of Gas.
51. Predator - More testostorone (sp?) than you can shake a steroid at!
52. Babylon 5 - The Lost Tales - Or Babylon 5: The Stage Play. Could this have been done on more of a budget?

July 24
53. Firefly - Serenity Part 1 and 2 - Like wearing a comfortable pair of slippers, it doesn't get any better than this!
54. Firefly - Episode 3 - The Train Job / The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - Deep in the Heart of Dixie - Brisco gets the girl again! But he's stuck with this one. Soc gets the girl too!

July 25
55. Firefly - Episode 4 - Bushwhacked / Episode 5 - Shindig - Still the best that ever was on television. The fan's lament: 14 episodes and a movie....Full House was on for 7 years!

July 26
56. Invaders from Mars – Cute, old. I like the old flicks with actual real scenery footage rather than just studio lots.
57. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - Episode 12 – Crystal Hawks / Episode 13 – Steel Horses – Sheena Easton! Hubba-hubba....now I don't ever need to see that “Strut” video again (but I probably still will)
58. Battle Royale – The Japanese flick. Still the most brutal (violent) movie I've ever seen. Maybe it's a Japanese thing.

July 27
59. Firefly – Episode 5 – Safe / Episode 6 – Our Mrs. Reynolds: Featuring Christina Hendricks as Saffron...so pretty and so cool! Inara high on drugs is also a treat.
60. Cloverfield – I liked this movie better the second time around. The camera holder is a douche but at least we know that. I'm not sure what the SF community or Abrams lovers thought of it but it did seem to garner some scorn.
61. Survivors (2008) Episode 2 / Episode 3 – It's The Stand without all the supernatural hoo-haw. I hear the 1975 version is better but I haven't been able to get my hands on it yet.
62. Hot Tub Time Machine - Hey! The girl from Cloverfield was in this too! Completely unplanned. It was a low brow timewaster and that's okay.

July 28
63. Torchwood - Children of Earth - Day 1 / Day 2
64. Torchwood - Children of Earth - Day 3 / Day 4
64.5 Torchwood - Children of Earth - Day 5: Once I got started I couldn't stop. Great story and unlike just about every other Torchwood ep. it was big enough for the time allotted and the story and characters had time to breathe.
65. Firefly - Episode 7 - Jaynestown! Another classic Firefly episode. Mind you, I suppose they all are.

July 29
66. Aliens - Special Edition - A. It's long B. Unlike the theatrical release, it gives you a little time to breathe. Still a great movie but not tight anymore.
67. Independance Day - A great American flag-waver! Stupid, overlong and great fun. But (and I guess it's been a few years) it features a young Adam Baldwin right in line with another watching of Firefly.

July 30
68. A.I. Artificial Intelligence - Visually pretty darn stunning.
69. Firefly - Episode 8 - Out of Gas / Episode 9 - Ariel - "I noticed when I was on my back..." Great line.

July 31
70. X2 - X-Men United. With everything they learned from the first movie and no need for exposition it rocked (but at least partly filmed in Toronto and I couldn't pick out a single location! I live in Toronto)
71. Batman - Hmmm, Jack Nicholson as the Joker...at no point did I see him as a viable threat. I would've shot him in about two seconds and ended that problem (and Batman killed plenty in that movie so that's really not an issue). Kim Bassinger...did she have to scream that much? She was snapping photos in some guerrilla war, you'd think she wouldn't freak easily. To say nothing of the long-lasting effects of a one-night stand ("I think I shall now tell you my greatest secret because we had sex once"). Come on!
72. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - Episode 14 - Mail Order Brides / Episode 15 - AKA Kansas - Why I like this show: A bull ran through a China shop (Ye Olde China Shoppe). That's comic gold!
73. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - Silly, CGI fun!

Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - List Thread

I'll give it a try, but I think 25-31 is probably where I'll end up. Three movies a day is a bit much for me.
