May 2010 "Make-Your-Own-Challenge" Challenge ***Lists Go Here***

The May 2010 "Make-Your-Own-Challenge" Challenge

May 1 - May 31, 2010

This thread is for lists only.
For discussion, go to the May 2010 Make-Your-Own-Challenge Challenge Discussion Thread.

You're in charge of your own Challenge, so you make the rules. There are a few guidelines however.

Challenge Guidelines:

The Challenge runs from May 1 through May 31.

Since the 31st day of the Drive-In Challenge overlaps with the first day of this one, if you're still watching B-Movies and they qualify for your personal challenge, go ahead and include them on both lists.

Please state your challenge theme and your challenge goal and rules (if any) at the top of your list(s) in this thread so others can tell what you're up to.

Don't duplicate an existing "Official" DVD Talk Challenge.

The "Official" Challenges as of now are: Horror, Holiday, Academy Award, Sci-Fi, Criterion, and B-Movie/Exploitation/Drive-In. With Animation and Historical upcoming (see Trevor's "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium thread for details and links to individual challenges).

The main purpose of this guideline is to encourage participants to focus on genres not already covered by a Challenge, and to not subtract from participation in any other Challenges. However, as with other challenges, you may watch stuff that qualifies for one or more of the other challenges. With this in mind, if you want to narrow the focus of one of the broader existing challenges to a specific sub-genre, you can.

The "no duplication" guideline only applies to "Official" challenges. More than one participant may do the same (or similar) challenge(s). If you see a theme you like, feel free to "borrow" it, or contact the creator and see if he or she wants to collaborate on Challenge rules and "compete" toward a goal.

Darth Maher's "Make-Your-Own-Challenge" Lists

_____________________________________________________________________________

* = First Time Viewing

May 4, 2010
1. Sixteen Candles [1984, DVD]

May 5, 2010
2. Friends: "The One Where They All Turn Thirty" [2001, DVD]
3. 13 Going On 30* [2004, DVD]
4. Happy Birthday To Me* [1980, DVD]

Not much of a "marathon" but who's really counting anyway? For the record, I turned neither 16, 18, nor 30 this year. I guess I could have watched To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday to be accurate, but that one was kind of a downer if I recall correctly.

Anyway, onto the next one...
_____________________________________________________________________________

May 7, 2010
5. The Running Man [1987, DVD]

May 10, 2010
6. Last Action Hero [1993, Blu-ray Disc]

May 12, 2010
7. Total Recall [1990, DVD]
8. Imagining Total Recall* [2001, DVD]

May 14, 2010
9. True Lies [1994, DVD]

Didn't get to Commando and The 6th Day like I had hoped, but these are the movies I felt like watching at the time. I'll save Terminator for the Sci-Fi Challenge.

Anyway, onto the next one...
_____________________________________________________________________________

May 26, 2010
10. Mr. & Mrs. Smith* [1941, DVD]
11. Mr. Hitchcock Meets The Smiths* [2004, DVD]

May 27, 2010
12. Suspicion* [1941, DVD]
13. Before The Fact: Suspicious Hitchcock* [2004, DVD]

In all actuality, the Hitchcock Marathon should have been my whole month-long challenge. I'll probably just look at it as a sneak preview to the next MYOC.

_____________________________________________________________________________

It's been hectic the past few weeks so the challenge was put on hold for periodically throughout the month. I watched the first 20 minutes of Iron Man last night just so I'd have something to put here, but the kids got crazy so I turned it off. By the time the chaos was brought to an acceptable level, it was too late because I had to wake up early for a new job.

Maybe I'll try and add some SuperHero movies to the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge.

Had a great time with all the stuff that I did get to this month though. Can't wait for the next one.

Re: May 2010 "Make-Your-Own-Challenge" Challenge ***Lists Go Here***

Why not? I'll go here.

For the first part of the month I'll be going through the directorial work of....

David Lean
(And if I feel up to it, maybe I'll watch some of the films that he edited afterwards)
Also does anyone know where I can find Lost and Found: The Story of Cook's Anchor?

I notice that I'm in the top 15 for the Deuce list and there's only one person that's checked them all. I'm shooting for the number 1 spot. I start off by thinking I'll only watch the movies for that list at work and to the top entries at home. I quickly changed my mind. I want that #1 spot.

I started The Usual Suspects on the 25th after City of God, so I want to finish that off before completely switching over to this new challenge.

There's also a few movies I needed to buy and/or rent, depending on the price which I did by the 26th. I plan on completing the list by Saturday.

Re: May 2010 "Make-Your-Own-Challenge" Challenge ***Lists Go Here***

I'm going to do an Iberian and Latin American (including Caribbean) challenge.
My rules will be:

1. A film that is from any of these countries and in its native language
2. films that are from out of the country but that take place entirely in one of these countries i.e. Turistas, Man On Fire, Girl from Rio, Westerns based on the Mexican Revolution or before the Mexican-American War (so old Mexican territory)
3. Film from one of these countries but not on the countries native languages due to dubbing or intentionally done in another language but with at least 70% crew from native contry. i.e. Kovak Box
4. TV shows are allowed if completely from one of these countries and in native language i.e. Epitafios
5. Concerts are allowed if longer that 60 minutes and by musician from one of these countries or foreign musicians in concert in one of these countries.
6. Territories are considered autonomous so a movie from France or the UK would not count unless one of the rules above applies
7. documentaries about a one of these countries or person/s from these countries allowed with no location restrictions.

Rob's Big Gay Challenge

I'm going to watch as many of my LGBT-themed DVDs as I can, both movies and TV shows.
For TV shows, I'll count two hours' worth of episodes as one entry, like we do for the sci-fi

Re: May 2010 "Make-Your-Own-Challenge" Challenge ***Lists Go Here***

Theme: Comedies from the 1970's and 1980's

Rules:
1. Movies only, no television
2. Comedy must be listed as a genre on IMDB
3. Release date must be between 1/1/70 and 12/31/89

Goal: 30

* = First time viewing
DVD
Blu-ray
HD DVD

May 2
01. National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) Started out with a classic and there's good reason it's a classic. Just as good today as it was the day it was released. 8/10
02. Brewster's Millions (1985)* I'm a big fan of Richard Pryor, but I must say John Candy stole the show here. Not sure how I missed this all these years. 7/10

May 3
03. Strange Brew (1983) First time watching this in many, many years. Held up better than I expected it to. 6/10

May 4
04. The Twelve Chairs (1970)* Early, unheralded Mel Brooks gem. Very good. 7/10

May 5
05. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) Another timeless classic. May be my favorite John Hughes film. 8/10

May 6
06. Blazing Saddles (1974)* Can't believe I waited this long to see this. Worthy of all the accolades it receives and then some. 9/10

May 10
07. Lost in America (1985)* Very good, another hidden gem. 7/10
08. Silent Movie (1976)* I had reservations about this going in, but I loved it!!! Highly underrated. 8/10

May 11
09. Bustin' Loose (1981)* Another pretty good Richard Pryor film. 6/10
10. Airplane II: The Sequel (1982)* A few laughs, but not as good as the original. 5/10

May 12
11. High Anxiety (1977)* Mel Brooks tribute to Alfred Hitchcock. Not bad at all. 7/10

May 13
12. Fletch (1985)* Another classic that I had somehow managed to miss all these years. 7/10

May 14
13. Doctor Detroit (1983)* The first real stinker I've run into during this challenge. Just not very good. 3/10

May 15
14. Funny Farm (1988)* I know this is not considered one of Chevy Chase's better films, but I liked it. As far as I'm concerned, it's very underrated and on par with the Vacation movies. 7/10
15. 48 Hrs. (1982) Another classic. This was when Eddie Murphy was funny!!! 8/10

May 16
16. Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986)* Pretty good coming of age story set in New York in the late thirties. 6/10
17. Spies Like Us (1985)* Another good Chevy Chase movie from the eighties. He was on a roll then. 7/10

May 17
18. History of the World: Part I (1981) Another Mel Brooks classic. I had seen this one before, but it had been many years. Holds up well. 7/10
19. The Money Pit (1986)* A little predictable but I liked it anyway. 7/10

May 18
20. Valley Girl (1983)* Good soundtrack, movie not so good. Same story that's been told a million times before. 4/10
21. Wise Guys (1986)* Not bad at all. Good performance as always by Danny Devito. 6/10

May 19
22. Dragnet (1987)* Pretty decent. Kind of odd to see Aykroyd in the lead and Hanks in a supporting role. I think if it were cast today, those roles would be reversed. 6/10

May 20
23. To Be or Not to Be (1983)* A different feel than most Mel Brooks films, but still entertaining. 6/10
24. Casual Sex? (1988) I had seen this many, many years ago, decent, but nothing outstanding. 5/10

May 21
25. The 'burbs (1989)* Not at all what I expected. 6/10

May 22
26. Romancing the Stone (1984) I always liked this movie. Kind of Indiana Jones light. 6/10

May 23
27. The Jewel of the Nile (1985) Another one of my favorites. I think I like it a little more than Romancing the Stone. 6/10
28. Beverly Hills Cop II (1987)* This was actually really good. Almost as good as the original. 7/10

May 24
29. Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment (1985)* Nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. 5/10

May 25
30. Mystic Pizza (1988)* I don't think I'm the demographic this movie was aimed at. 5/10
31. Easy Money (1983)* I like everything I've ever seen that Rodney Dangerfield did. 6/10

May 26
32. The Bad News Bears (1976) Doesn't hold up quite as well as I remembered, but still decent. 6/10

May 27
33. Every Which Way But Loose (1978)* Paper thin plot, but entertaining none-the-less. 6/10

May 30
34. The Nude Bomb (1980)* I liked it. Pretty funny and entertaining. 6/10

May 31
35. The Frisco Kid (1979)* 6/10
36. Heartbreak Ridge (1986)* 8/10
37. City Heat (1984)* 5/10
38. 1941 (1979)* 4/10

Re: May 2010 "Make-Your-Own-Challenge" Challenge ***Lists Go Here***

2010 Foreign Language Film Challenge

May 1
1. Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky
Lucky for me, I was able to combine the B-Movie challenge with my foreign challenge. Riki-Oh is so awesomely badass.
2. Samaritan Zatoichi
More Zatoichi. I watched a bunch of these during the B-Movie Challenge.
3. Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman (1989)
Shintaro Katsu's farewell appearance as Zatoichi. One of the best of the series, with some really solid production values. It's been interesting to watch the character age from one movie to another.

May 2
4. The Taste of Tea
My friend loaned me a copy of this. Had never heard of it. Very frustrating film, but I thought individual scenes were quite striking. Lately, I find that is often enough to sway my opinion, even if the overall film doesn't quite come together.

May 3
5. Ponyo
I had seen this in the theater but thought the English dub was awful. As much as I like Matt Damon and Tina Fey, I don't think they're known for their voices. The Japanese track is much better and really improved my opinion of the film immeasurably.
6. Samurai Spy
Part of the Criterion samurai box set. Very complex and I wasn't able to follow everything, but this is one I will definitely revisit at some point.

May 4
7. Sword of the Beast
More Criterion samurai awesomeness. This one is much more straightforward but still a very powerful film. This may be the best film in the set.
8. Ghost in the Shell 2.0
This is my first time seeing the 2.0 version. Had mixed feelings about the new animation, but it's still Ghost in the Shell and it holds up amazingly well.

May 5

May 6

May 7
9. Early Summer
Ozu. I had seen Tokyo Story and Late Spring and loved them both. This one is equally beautiful. I read an article a few months back that said the greatest special effect in film is the camera's ability to focus on the human face. This movie is proof of that.

May 8
10. Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
Not as accessible as the first one, but I find new things to like each time I see it. The animation is stunning.
11. Wings of Desire
I had seen this probably ten years ago on VHS and didn't quite connect with it. I think I was still "learning" how to watch films and grew impatient with it. What a difference a decade makes. This is now easily one of the best films I've ever seen. So heartbreaking and beautiful, this will be probably be the highlight of the challenge for me. Criterion's transfer is perfect.

May 9

May 10

May 11
12. The Wages of Fear
Again, Criterion's transfer is flawless. This is another movie that I've revisited only to find that I liked it much better upon second viewing. It's amazing how the film is able to maintain so much tension and suspense throughout their journey.

May 12

May 13
13. The Sea Inside
Had never seen this. Mixed feelings, but overall thought it was solid. A perfect example of a movie that I liked and admired but will probably never revisit.

May 14
14. My Neighbor Totoro
Totoro might be my favorite Miyazaki. It's so playful and fun, but it's overall themes are quite dark and sophisticated.

May 15
15. The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser
One of my favorite Herzong films. Bruno S. is so heartbreakingly sad.

May 16
16. Samurai Rebellion
Another from the Rebel Samurai box. Toshiro Mifune plays a much different kind of samurai than he does in the Kurosawa films. Very restrained and more of a drama, at least until the end when he unleashes hell on everyone that gets in his way. Directed by Masaki Kobayashi, who also did Kwaidan.

May 17
17. Kill!
Based on the same novel that Sanjuro was made from. Much different take on the material, but equally cool.

May 18
18. Pauline at the Beach
I had seen Rohmer's Six Moral Tales and was interested in checking out some more of his stuff. His movies have a lightness to them that masks their complexity. Really liked this one.

May 19

May 20
19. Appleseed (2004)
I've never really embraced motion capture, but I find myself liking this one the more I see it. From a design standpoint, it's a really good looking film, and some of the action scenes are outstanding.

May 21

May 22
20. Ashes of Time Redux
Had been wanting to see this for years. Big Wong Kar Wai fan. I like how it is very much like his other movies, despite the setting. I was expecting more of a Crouching Tiger kind of thing, but this was a nice suprise. One of my favorites of the challenge.

May 23
21. Variety Lights
Fellini's first movie. A sort of prototype for what could come, it has a lot of his hallmarks.

May 24
22. The Bride with White Hair
Another one I had been wanting to see for years. Liked it a lot, but I don't think I could watch a lot of wiu xiu.

May 25

May 26

May 27
23. Sing a Song of Sex
Part of Eclipse's new Oshimi set. It's...it's interesting. I don't know if this is something I'll revisit often, but it has its moments.

May 28

May 29
24. The Dinner Game
A friend of mine had recommended this to me a while back and I finally got around to seeing it. Some really funny moments. It will be interesting to compare the remake when it comes out.
25. The Milky Way
Bunuel. Really odd film, but funny and interesting at the same time. Parts of it reminded me of the kind of conversations I used to have in college.

May 30
26. Ran
Saw this in the theater. Amazing movie, one of Kurosawa's best. I had seen it years ago, but like a lot of films I've been revisiting lately, it seems to have made a greater impression on me upon viewing it a second time. The battle scenes are epic, but at the same time, haunting and sad.

May 31
27. Japanese Summer: Double Suicide
More Oshimi. Again, not the kind of thing I'll likely revisit very often.
28. Pleasures of the Flesh
Another Oshimi. This one I liked quite a bit. The plot is almost like a Hitchcock film, but it plays out more like an exploitation flick.

Titles in Blue = Blu-Ray

Re: May 2010 "Make-Your-Own-Challenge" Challenge ***Lists Go Here***

"Drown Myself in Hobbits" Challenge

Goal: Watch every ounce of content on every* LOTR related DVD release.

* I don't own every LOTR documentary DVD, only a few of them. I'm obsessive, but not obsessive enough to track down out-of-print rehashings of the same info I have on several other documentaries.

Reasons:
  • I have loved Tolkein and the LOTR trilogy since first reading him back in junior high school. Loved the books, the games, the animated films, the Peter Jackson films.
  • I'm big into special features, going out of my way to obtain all DVD special features available for films that I love/collect.
  • I'm lazy and rarely get around to actually watching those special features.
  • I have a sort of save-the-best-for-last philosophy, and still haven't watched the extended editions of the films.
So combining those four things, we have my Challenge.

Rules: To roughly stay chronological by release date, and to not buy the LOTR BD set just because it has 90 seconds of advertisements that could be defined as 'new content'.

Key: Time numbers are hours spent on the Challenge, rounded to the nearest whole number, first DVD based and second other (CD, reading, this post, etc).

Saturday, May 1st

Today, I may not watch any LOTR content, still finishing up the B-Movie Challenge, but I did manage to break one of my only two rules for this Make-Your-Own-Challenge.

That bastard DVDTalker Beebs posted a great deal on the LOTR trilogy BD set, and I bought it. I really expected to be able to resist it and keep that goal, and can hardly believe that I broke it on day number one. I'm a sad sad man.

I also did some preparation for the month, putting a few Tolkien documentaries in my Netflix queue.

Time: 0/2, month - 0/2

Sunday, May 2nd

Decided to start off with all of my pre-Peter Jackson film documentary DVDs about Tolkien. All meaning both. I might order a few more and watch them later, to make my growing LOTR collection even more complete.

An Awfully Big Adventure: J.R.R. Tolkien (1998)
One hour long part of a six part television series, documenting the lives of six different child's book auhors: Roald Dahl, Dr. Seuss, J.R.R. Tolkien, Arthur Ransome, Kenneth Grahame, and Edith Nesbit. A few interesting things, but not worth seeking out or buying if it is ever released on home video. I DVRd and DVD-Rd this off cable.

J.R.R. Tolkien: Master of the Rings - The Definitive Guide to the World of the Rings (2004)
Despite the date, this seems to have been produced before the Jackson films. Fairly disappointing 80 minute documentary, seeming to consist mainly of a narrator summarizing the story of the trilogy with hazy re-enactments. A few interesting bits, and the footage of Tolkein was nice to see, if hard to understand. The man wrote beautifully, but certainly didn't speak American.

I still have the special features to watch and the 'bonus' CD to listen to, so more on this later.
Time: 2/2, month 2/4

Monday, May 3rd

The Hobbit (1977) - wiki - Decent Rankin/Bass production, especially considering they were probably under orders to keep it short. Not too many special features thankfully.

Time: 2/0, month - 4/4

Tuesday, May 4th

The Lord of the Rings (1978) - wiki - My first blu-ray of the Challenge. After watching it I checked out the included DVD version, and while the BD is definitely sharper, I wouldn't consider it an essential upgrade for the PQ/AQ, the transfer seems pretty average. The documentary on Ralph Bakshi however, was very good, so I'm glad I 'upgraded'. Watching this, one can tell that Peter Jackson was inspired by much of it.

I also popped in my old DVD release and watched/read the menu screens and special features. The new release combo pack does not include the (minimal text) special features of the old release, either on the BD or DVD, which both contain the new Bakshi documentary. None of the three discs contain a trailer for the film, even though the old DVD release promises one on the packaging.

Time: 3/0, month - 7/4

Wednesday, May 5th

National Geographic Beyond the Movie: The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) - This was a bonus disc for buying the FOTR Gift Set. Nicely done hour doc mainly on Tolkein and his influences, but with a fair amount of footage from the new film. Minimal special features thankfully.

Creating the Lord of the Rings Symphony: A Composer's Journey Through Middle-Earth (2004) - 52 minute documentary, bonus disc for buying the ROTK Gift Set. Not a whole lot of information, but a lot of beautiful music.

The Return of the King (1980) - wiki - So despite making $30 million on a $4 million budget, Bakshi was not allowed to make a sequel to finish his version of the trilogy. Rankin/Bass stepped in again and made this film that skipped big parts of ROTK, let alone the missing half of TTT. Not as good as Bakshi's film, or even their Hobbit, but not a terrible film. Again, not much in the special features department, just a few short text lists.

J.R.R. Tolkien: Master of the Rings - The Definitive Guide to the World of the Rings (2004)
Finished off this set by watching the DVD special features, listening to the music CD several times over the last few days, and reading the included booklet, which was pretty much just a few very nice Brothers Hildebrandt paintings.

The CD was a pseudo-soundtrack of sorts, ten selections from Rick Wakeman's (of Yes fame) previously released CDs.

Special features were decent, but was just extra footage that could have been in the documentary formatted in different ways.

Writing this much later, but I did finish. Let too much time pass before updating this, moved on to the next Challenge too quickly, so I can't re-create all the discs/commentaries/etc that I watched. But every ounce of content from all 12 LOTR releases was watched, along with a bunch of other LOTR-related discs. Probably averaged at least 6 hours of day for the month.
Time: , month -

Spoiler:
Still not positive what I'll do, but probably the every ounce of content from all the LOTR releases.

Edit to add: Dimension put it in the 1st post, so I'll lock in to the above. I'll feel good when I finish it, but I'm actually not really looking forward to the chore of watching it all.

GILES’ MULITMEDIA MUSIC EXTRAVAGANZA!

- LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS - (Director Coy Middlebrook) Ford's Theatre production WILD CARD #1
---The Washington Post was quite critical in it's review that this production of the musical was 'too dark'... well duh, yes it is. The musical always has had a downer of an ending, even the original ending of Frank Oz' film version had a hysterical more over the top ending where everyone bites the dust. This production really really surprised me, the singing is ace, the set on a giant turntable and the great puppet of the plant was a visual effect treat. I had never seen the musical theatrical version of the play before and I was surprised that there were more songs than the Oz musical version, of course, the 'I'm a Big Green Mother from Outer Space' song is exclusive to the film, so it seemed like a glaring omission, but on the whole this version was still a lot of fun

Re: May 2010 "Make-Your-Own-Challenge" Challenge ***Lists Go Here***

Rules: To finally open and watch The Alien Quadrilogy. Which, unspooled, looks to be the size of the Nostromo. I'm only numbering the films themselves, not the extras. So my numbers should be extremely low, even though I'm going to list everything I watch.

May 1
"How come you guys don't freeze him?"

1. Alien: Theatrical Edition (1979) 117 min.
**** - The closest thing to just a perfect Horror movie you'll probably ever find. Everything, from the editing, to the acting, to the score, to the framing and cinematography. Just everything is perfect here. It's been a while since I watched the Theatrical (my last two viewings were the so-called Director's Cut) but it's still not a comparison. Theatrical wins, hands down. Scott's usage of silence is particularly perfect. Most directors (especially now) are a little too afraid of it and instead end up worse off because they don't have the balls to just slow the fuck down for a minute.
Deleted/Extended Scenes: 5 scenes, 16 minutes.
"Transmission"
"Kane's Weapon"
"A Slap in the Face"
"Waiting/A Quick Glimpse"
"Cocooned/Jonesy"

2. Alien: Theatrical Edition (1979) w/ Commentary
**** - Very entertaining commentary with Scott and Weaver, Dan O'Bannon, a buncha other actors, the editor and a producer. Some really good anecdotes and on-set stories told here. There's only about, I'd say, 20 seconds of dead air throughout the films just-under-2-hour running time, which is good. I fuckin' hate when a commentary has dead air and it's one of the reasons I stopped listening to them altogether. Even though Dan O'Bannon only has a few minutes of air time throughout, he says the word "finger" 16,247 times. Or so it seems.

May 2

Introduction by Ridley Scott: 1 min.
3. Alien: "Director's Cut" (2003) 115 min.
**** - This DC is just the extended/deleted scenes from elsewhere on the disk spliced back into the flick. You can totally see why these scenes were cut in the first place. Some are a few seconds and the only one worth anything is when Ripley comes across Dallas cocooned and has to incinerate him. Watching this scene separately is pretty cool but in the film it's totally out of place and slows down the tempo in the final third.

Star Beast: Developing the Story. 18:12
The Visualists: Direction and Design. 16:54
Truckers in Space: Casting. 14:56
Sigourney Weaver Screen Test w/ Scott commentary. 5:45
Fear of the Unknown: Shepperton Studios, 1978. 24:06
The Darkest Reaches: Nostromo and Alien Planet. 17:29
The Eighth Passenger: Creature Design. 31:36
Multi-Angle Scene: "The Chestburster" w/ Scott commentary.
Future Tense: Music and Editing. 16:24
Deleted/Extended Scenes: 7 scenes, 15 min.
"Kane in the Morning"
"The Derelict"
"Kane's Condition"
"Brett, Parker and Ripley argue"
"Planning Scene"
"Ripley soothes Lambert"
"Airlock sequence"
"Lambert/Parker crab walk" -- not in the quadrilogy, found elsewhere --
Outward Bounds: Visual Effects. 19:13
A Nightmare Fulfilled: Reaction to the Film. 23:24

The extras from Alien were kind of a mixed bag. Some of it very interesting, like the behind-the-chestburster scene and Geiger's work on the film, but alot of it seemed like they could have explained it in 4 minutes instead of 14. Also, I fucking hate when the studio execs talk about this and call it a "Thriller" because they're so fucking afraid that it'll be labeled a Horror movie. Fuck you, you asses. This is a Horror film.

May 4
"Game over, man. Game over!"

Introduction by James Cameron: 1 min.
4. Aliens: Special Edition (1986) 154 min.
**** - I started out this disc with the SE because that's the version I prefer which is the opposite of the first film, where I prefer the Theatrical. This is easily one of the best sequels of all time. Almost every beat that Cameron hit was perfect. I'll type out more when I'm not watching Ferguson, 'cause right now it's hard to type and laugh.

5. Aliens: Special Edition (1986) w/ Commentary
**** - Terrific commentary track with Cameron, Stan Winston, a bunch of the actors and SFX guys. Listening to Cameron is like going to film school, so he's always interesting to listen to. The actors were really fun to listen to, even though actor "reunions" are usually boring on these tracks. Even with the commentary track on, you just kinda lose yourself in this film.

May 8

6. Aliens: Theatrical Edition (1986) 137 min.
**** - It's been so long since I've seen the Theatrical version that I almost forgot which scenes were added to the SE and which weren't. After seeing this version again, I don't think it even compares. The SE shits all over this.

57 Years Later: Continuing the Story. 11:02
Building Better Worlds: From Concept To Construction. 13:28
Preparing For Battle: Casting & Characterization. 17:03
This Time It's War: Pinewood Studios, 1985. 19:40
The Risk Always Lives: Weapons and Action. 15:13
Bug Hunt: Creature Design. 16:26
Beauty and the Bitch: Power Loader vs. Alien Queen. 22:27
Two Orphans: Sigourney Weaver and Carrie Henn. 13:48
The Final Countdown: Music, Editing and Sound. 15:31
The Power of Real Tech: Visual Effects. 26:17
Aliens Unleashed: Reaction to the Film. 12:32
Easter Egg: Van Ling discussion

"In an insane world, a sane man must appear insane."

w/ Text Introduction
7. Alien³: Special Edition (1992) 144 min.
** - It's been quite a while since I watched Alien³ and I don't remember quite liking it. This was my second viewing of the work-print cut and I found myself liking it alot more. It's still not "great" or anything but I didn't find the inmates quite as annoying this time and that's one of the main reasons I didn't care for the film to begin with. I just didn't give a shit about any of them.

May 14

8. Alien³: Special Edition (1992) 144 min. w/commentary
** - The commentary was pretty interesting. My only problem with it, and this was also a problem I had with the special features overall, was the lack of David Fincher. I know why he's missing, It still irritated me.

9. Alien³: Theatrical Version (1992) 114 min.
** - While I found myself liking the Special Edition work-print alot more than I remember, the Theatrical Cut was still weak to me. I liked it more, yeah, but it just feels like a colossal wasted opportunity to me.

May 17

Development: Concluding the Story. 16:58
Tales of the Wooden Planet: Vincent Ward's Vision. 13:11
Pre-production, Part III. 18:01
Xeno-Erotic: H.R. Giger's Redesign. 10:20
Optical Fury: Visual Effects. 23:18
Music, Editing and Sound. 14:51
Post-Mortem: Reaction to the Film. 6:07
Production, Part I. 18:01
Adaptive Organism: Creature Design. 20:32
Production, Part II. 14:39
Production, Part III. 8:53
Furnace Construction: Time Lapse Sequence. 4:34
E.E.V. Scan Multi-Angle Study with Optional Commentary

May 19
"I thought you were dead?"
"Yeah, I get that alot."

Introduction by Jean-Pierre Jeunet
10. Alien Resurrection: Special Edition (1997) 116 min.
*** - This was actually my first time watching the "Special Edition" of Resurrection and while I didn't hate it, I didn't find it that necessary. If I never watch it again, I don't think I'd miss it. The biggest addition to the SE is the brand new beginning of the film. While it was good, the effects looked pretty shotty. Still like the film though.

May 20

11. Alien Resurrection: Theatrical Cut (1997) 109 min.
*** - This film gets alot of hatred on the internet, but I've always liked it. It's a nice little action flick and unlike Alien³ I happen to like most of the cast outside of Sigourney Weaver. Winona Ryder looked hot, even with short hair and Ron Pearlman's character was one my favorites.

12. Alien Resurrection: Theatrical Cut (1997) 109 min. w/commentary
*** - The commentary track for Resurrection was quite informative and there wasn't at much downtime as I was expecting. I had given up on commentaries for quite a while and the ones featured in this set were much better than I had expected with some good behind-the-scenes (some that were repeated in the extras) and stories.

May 24

From the Ashes: Reviving the Story. 10:04
French Twist: Direction and Design. 26:07
Under the Skin: Casting and Characterization. 2:43
Test Footage #1: Creatures and Costumes. 9:49
Test Footage #2: Hair and Makeup. 4:39
Death from Below: Underwater Photography. 31:35
In the Zone: The Basketball Scene. 6:41
Unnatural Mutation: Creature Design. 26:21
Genetic Composition: Music. 13:08
Virtual Aliens: Computer Generated Imagery. 9:52
A Matter of Scale: Miniature Photography. 22:49
Critical Juncture: Reaction to the Film. 14:26
Easter Egg: David Prior discussion

The amount of Extras on these discs is fucking staggering.

May 26

Aliens In The Basement: Bob Burns featurette. 16:57
Alien Evolution: Documentary. 64:21
Experience in Terror: 1979 Promotional featurette. 7:08
Ridley Scott: Q & A. 15:39
Alien: Theatrical Teaser and Trailer
Alien: 2 TV Spots

I've always loved the trailers for Alien so I was glad they included them on the set. The Alien Evolution is a nice little extra as well.

Aliens: Theatrical Teaser and Trailer
Aliens: Domestic and International Trailer
Aliens: TV Spot (Now Playing)

Alien³: Advance Featurette. 2:55
Alien³: 5 Theatrical Trailers
Alien³: 7 TV Spots

Alien Resurrection: Theatrical Teaser
Alien Resurrection: 2 Theatrical Trailers
Alien Resurrection: 4 TV Spots

May 30
-- bonus feature --

13. Alien Legacy (1999) 68 min.
**** - I figured since I made it through the quad, I might as well break this out since it's been sitting on my shelf since I found it at a Gamestop. This was a terrific behind-the-scenes doc with a nice amount of unused footage and cut scenes that I have never seen before. Definitely worth a watch if you can find it.

Who Watches The Unwatched?
I finally settled on going through the Unwatched Pile as my inaugural challenge theme. It's not very creative, which disappoints me, but at least there's a checklist to guide me. I have excluded discs in cases where I have seen the feature (on a previous edition, in a theater, etc.), but I have included a few titles where I have seen the feature, but don't really recall much about it.

Reserved... going with Comic book movies. Goal will be 20 and the only rule is the comic book/graphic novel had to have come before the movie.

May 1- Free Comic Book Day
1. Watchmen- Not bad, but there are some pretty big misses (Nixon and most of the soundtrack).
2. Green Lantern: First Flight- Very good introduction to Green Lantern's world, I would love to see an on going Green Lantern cartoon show.
May 2
3. Road to Perdition- What you get when a great story meets strong acting and good directing.
May 7
4. Hellboy- Good, not great. Just didn't strike me like it did others.
5. Justice League: New Frontier- Very nicely done, more adult take on the heroes we are all familiar with.
May 9
6. 300- Completely stylistic and fantastic vision of Miller's graphic novel.
7. Superman/Doomsday- Should be called Superman/Clone, Doomsday's in it for like 15 minutes. Good solid movie, but rather unspectacular.
8. 30 Days of Night- This is the way vampires should be done, not the whole WB's Gothic Creek trend.
May 14
9. Iron Man 2- Not as good as the first one, but still very enjoyable. Rockwell ruled, but it seemed Rourke was wasted.
May 30
10. Spider-man- Great, great film... BUT the stain of Spider-Man 3 does negatively impact it a little.
11. Wolverine- Much maligned origins film, I found it interesting and fun (you want a truly bad movie, watch Punisher War Zone)
12. V is for Vendetta- Good flick, might have been much better had they made it 20 years ago when its ideas hadn't become cliche.

Commentary Challenge

The commentary track is one of the main features that got me interested in collecting DVDs, but alas, I have neglected that feature for several years.
Goal: 30+ commentary tracks while watching the feature. Of course, this will have to be features that I have viewed before, but will strive for commentaries I haven't listened to before.
TV rules (if I may borrow from lisadoris): 30 min shows = 1/4 entry, 1 hour shows = 1/2 entry, 2+ hour shows = 1 entry

May 2
1. Cannibal! The Musical - Drunken commentary by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Jason McHugh, Dian Bachar, Andy Kemler. There are two themes running through this commentary, as the group consumes scotch, beer and wine, getting progressively drunk. Predictably, one is the group mocking their amateurish (and sometimes, life-threatening) efforts, but giving props to some well-done instances. The other is the inspiration for this movie: a woman named LeeAnn, who was supposed to marry Trey Parker, but started cheating on him a couple of months before the wedding with some "a cappella guy". About two-thirds into the commentary, the well-soused group burst into uncontrollable laughter as they discuss that Trey is worth seven million dollars, while the a cappella guy sells insurance.

May 3
2. The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.: Pilot episode - Bruce Campbell and Carlton Cuse. Bruce Campbell is always a great commentator, being the saving grace of the Evil Dead commentaries. He and Carlton have a great rapport and there's hardly a lull during the whole episode. I was left with the feeling that this is the last real television western, in terms of sets and stunts. If a television western were to be attempted today, the sets would have to be green screen recreations and I have the feeling that stunts like Bruce trick twirling a pistol would be done with CGI, as well. Over ten years had passed since the pilot episode and Bruce's and Carl's DVD commentary, but they express real appreciation for this show being the last of its kind, as well as the opening of opportunities for Bruce, Carlton and much of the crew.

3. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs - writers/directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord and actor Bill Hader. This is movie is one of my four-year-old son's favorites. How would he react to a commentary track? Well, he wasn't riveted, but he didn't run away either. The commentary mostly acknowledges the efforts of a lot of people that worked on the film that otherwise wouldn't get noticed, including, according to Bill Hader, huge rooms filled with animators that were tired of his voice. Bill throws out enough quips to keep it interesting along the way, but it's not really one for repeat listenings.

European Crime/Polizia Films

5.1.10:

Contraband

Lucio Fulci, Fabio Testi, and shootouts galore! Does it get any better than this? I dig crime films. I also dig Fulci films, in fact, he is actually one of my favorite directors. I rate the late Mr. Fulci up there with Umberto Lenzi and the late Stanley Kubrick. Fulci was a master at creating some of the most memorable gore scenes in cinematic history. Unfortunately not many people were too keen on his abilities with respect to gore, chalking him up as a one note wonder, a man who was out simply for shock value. Contraband is proof that this isn't so, here we have a well made film. It is also nice to see Ajita Wilson in a supporting role here. Contraband isn't exactly well-reviewed among many genre film fans but I think this is quite the underrated film. I was quite pleased to revisit this film.

5.2.10:

Cop In Blue Jeans

This Bruno Corbucci directed film, starring Tomas Milian and Jack Palance, is a truly awesome film. Boasting some great action sequences, it really is a fun ride from start to finish. I watched this on a R2 PAL DVD. I'd love to see this get the deluxe DVD treatment but this DVD will hold me over nicely until we can get a R1 release.

5.4.10

Gambling City

5.5.10

Emergency Squad

5.7.10

Convoy Busters
