It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like The 5th Annual Holiday Movie Challenge (11/23-1/1)

This is the discussion thread only, a lists thread can be found a little ways down.

Past Year's Winners

2008 Winner: Dimension X (250)
2007 Winner: Trevor (509)
2006 Winner: RobCA (128)
2005 Winner: FantasticVSDoom (35)

OFFICIAL RULES

-Movies, TV shows/specials, Short Films & Cartoons Count

-The movie or TV show DOES NOT need to be holiday oriented. It could simply take place during the holiday season (i.e. Batman Returns, Gremlins, Die Hard, etc.)

-Although the movie doesn't have to take place during the holiday season, a MAJORITY of the film HAS to take place during the holiday season. No movies with just one scene during the holiday season. If you're not sure, ASK!

-Any holiday from Thanksgiving through New Years Day may count

-A film can only be viewed once, UNLESS you watch it and then watched it again with a commentary

-There is no global goal, shoot for a personal goal. Whatever you want your goal to be go for it. For returning participants maybe your goal should be to beat a previous year's goal.

-Again, like last year there will be a THREE Wild Car option to include movies or TV shows you might watch during the holiday season that is not holiday oriented. My family used to watch Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory every Christmas. So anything is allowed, up to 3.

-PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE number your lists!

It doesn't matter how you see the film, VHS, DVD, Laserdisc, Theatrical release, it will be counted. Just have fun.

The challenge begins at 12:00am CST on November 23, 2009 and ends at 11:59pm CST on January 1, 2010

I am so in! The best thing about this challenge is that unlike Halloween where you really only watch horror/Halloween related movies (not that there is anything wrong with that) in this challenge you can watch 3 holidays worth of titles plus a few random titles like Die Hard or whatnot.

This is the earliest I've put it up, but last year I put it up on October 3rd so it's not as early as you think.

I'm just playing, I am the one person that doesn't mind Christmas starting up early. Not saying I'm listening to Jingle Bell Rock yet, but I do walk around the X-Mas area of the local craft store months ahead of time.

I always love this because, much like the horror challenge, even the worst of the worst (here's looking at you ABC Family) can be entertaining.

And just recently I picked up my favorite Christmas special ever at Big Lots - Opus & Bill in A Wish For Wings That Work.

Re: It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like The 5th Annual Holiday Movie Challenge (11/23-1

I have to start putting together my list pretty soon of all my stuff to watch on dvd, since this will be my first year with cable I know there will be plenty of channels flooded with Christmas viewing (ABC Family, and many others I will figure out). Anyone have any advice about navigating the cable channels? Thanks for keeping the three wild card challenge, I got so burned out on watching my shows by the time christmas was actually here I forgot about adding the Lord of The Rings for my list. Hope its another fun year.

I don't mind people getting into the holiday spirit early, but UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES can you put up holiday decorations before November 1st. My neighbor put up a blow-up snowman in her front yard the 2nd week in October. C'mon!!

As for the challenge. I rocked it 2 years ago, but last year I struggled. I'm going to try and do much better this year. I bought something like 4 DVDs just for this challenge last year and didn't even watch them.

I do have a few christmas decorations and a small christmas tree, and the best time to buy that kind of christmas stuff is early(September and October) before everyone starts thinking about it.

I might have to get down on this one. My gf and I love watching Xmas films, might as well count them towards something. Though with her obsessive need to watch vertain movies over and over I'll prob have National Lampoon's Xmas Vacation listed a bajillion times.

Remember you can only count it once, again if you watch the commentary.

Exactly.

I'm as much a collector as a film lover, and I've always been drawn to collecting Christmas stuff and horror stuff. So these two Challenges are perfect for me and my OCD.

Curse Bless you and The Monkees for running these Challenges.

The only reason I started this was because I love watching holidays movies/TV shows at that time of the year. It IS my favorite time of the year. I figured, why not? Give me more of an excuse to watch as many as possible.

And Kudos goes to Chad mostly because I got the idea from his horror movie challenge idea. And then the Academy Award one too.

I am in for this one as well this year. In the past year I have done the Academy Award challenge and the Horror challenge. Missed the Sci-Fi and Criterion, but will get those next time. Looking forward to it, but I need to start forming a list of things to watch.
