Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

My first year at this. Goal is 40.
***** = Excellent/Loved it!
**** = Great
***= worthwhile
**= poor
* = horrid

Fortunato's List:

October 1
1. The Raven (1935) **** - One of my fav Lugosi/Karloff collaborations.

October 2
2. The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) ***** - Love it, one of the best universal monster films.

October 3
3. Werewolf of London (1935) *** Found the story enjoyable. Still falls short of The Wolfman.

October 4
4. The Masque of Red Death (1964) **** One of my favorite Poe stories, the movie wasn't as good as Poe's story but Vincent Price makes this a winner for me.

October 5
5. Hellraiser (1987)* *** Cenobites were cool, story a bit bizarre.

October 6
6. Nightmare Castle (1965) *** Some good visuals, and dark atmosphere.

October 7
7. Ginger Snaps (2000) *** A bit campy in parts but a fun story, enjoyed Emily Perkins in this one.

October 8
8. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) **** I love the visuals! Creepy sets and characters, one of my favorite silents.

October 9
9. Sleepy Hollow (1999) **** Love pretty much anything Burton, great actors and story.
10. The Haunted House of Horror (1969) ** Story was drawn out too much, plenty of potential victims, not much killing.

October 10
11. Zombieland (2009) *** This film was no Shaun of the Dead, but i did get plenty of laughs from it.
12. The House That Dripped Blood (1971) *** Fun horror anthology with some great horror icons.

October 11
13. The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues (1955) * Not enough focus on the sea monster, as cheesy as it was. Movie dragged on.

October 12
14. Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) ***** I could watch this movie over and over and never tire of it.
15. Halloween (2007) **** Never being a fan of the original series, I was quite surprised I liked Zombie's version a lot. Highlight was Michael as a kid.

October 13
16. Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) *** Eerie atmosphere and soundtrack; story was alright.

October 14
17. How to Make a Monster (1958) *** Consider this a sequel to the I Was A Teenage ... movies of the 50's. It was enjoyable to see the horror make-up crew play the bad guys, surprised to see it go to color at the end.

October 15
18. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988) *** Not as scary as the first, with its rocking 80's soundtrack and witty Freddy, but fun to watch.

October 16
19. Cemetery Man (1994) *** I appreciate the black humor in this one, a bit camp at times.
20. Videodrome (1983) *** This movie was strange but slightly intriguing. Probably wouldn't have enjoyed it much if it wasn't for James Woods.

October 17
21. The Curse of the Werewolf (1961) *** Decent wolf flick but it takes awhile to actually see the werewolf. Found Chaney's version more entertaining.
22. The Brides of Dracula (1960) **** I find this to be one of my favorite hammer Dracula movies. Enjoyed the story, characters, and Cushing was great as usual. Shame Lee couldn't be in this one.

October 18

Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

Count me in! So far:

1== Paranormal Activity **** (First ever viewing/Theater)
--Authentic, creepy and well done. Simple but haunting, images that will
stay with me.
2==Zombieland *** ½ (First ever viewing/Theater)
--Extremely entertaining and slick. Well paced, gory, and funny. Didn’t knock me out though.
3==Tales of Terror *** (First ever viewing/Streaming/Hulu)
--Old school camp. The middle story was far superior to it’s brother and sister story, though Vincent Price is consistent throughout.
4==Mad Love ** (First ever viewing/TV/TCM)
--Very morbid for the day. Cute little creepy tale.

2) ANTICHRIST - WTF?! Lars Von Trier's take on the horror flick was a bit like being kicked in the stomach for 105 minutes but this story of a marriage unraveling is compelling as hell. As weird and disturbing as advertised with a couple of the bravest performances in quite a while.

3) THE HOWLING- A much needed psychic palate cleanser after Antichrist.

4) SHAUN OF THE DEAD - Probably the definitive zombie comedy. A screenplay so good it should be on the curriculum of a school somewhere!

5) MAN MADE MONSTER - Fast paced 40's fun with Lon Chaney Jr playing another sympathetic, reluctant monster. Directed by George "The Wolf Man" Waggner.

OCTOBER 2
6) WOLFEN - Definitely the 3rd place finalist in the big wolf movie trifecta of 1981. It plays better as a police procedural than a horror flick and the social commentary comes across as awkward. It almost feels like director Michael Wadleigh was embarassed to be working in the genre.

7) THE CHILD - With a budget that appears to be lower than low, this flick manages to create some genuinely creepy atmosphere.

OCTOBER 3
8) THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL - OK throwback to 70's satanist flicks. Probably a bit too much buildup and the climax seemed rushed. Lead actress (Jocelin Donahue) reminded me a bit of 80's horror ingenue Jill Scholen and it's always great to see Mary Woronov in anything.

9) BURN WITCH BURN! - Similar vibe to "Curse of the Demon" but not nearly as effective.

OCTOBER 4
10) THE THING (1982) - Rob Bottin's effects still dazzle in Carpenter's classic. One thing that always puzzled me...once it's been clearly established that each individual cell of the alien is sentient, why does Kurt Russell keep throwing explosives at it - scattering it all over the camp?

11) THE HILLS HAVE EYES (1977) - I'm not a big Wes Craven fan, but this is a great movie.

OCTOBER 5
12) ZOMBIELAND - This one was a complete suprise. I wasn't expecting much (does the world really need another zombie movie?) but I dug it. The characters are likeable and there was a heart to all the mayhem. Nice gore too.

OCTOBER 6
13) BABY BLUES - Now THIS is a horror movie! Stylishly directed and brilliantly acted, this story of motherly "love" is tense as hell and beyond disturbing. One of the scariest movies I've seen in a long time and one of the best horror flicks in ages. A masterpiece.

OCTOBER 7
14) THE NIGHT STALKER - The classic made for TV movie that introduced the iconic character Carl Kolchak. It'd been so long since I'd seen this I'd forgotten just how good it is.

OCTOBER 8
15) PANDEMONIUM - Made at the height of the early 80's slasher boom, this attempt to blend horror and "Airplane" style comedy is hit or miss. It has enough laughs to make it worthwhile, and it's funnier than the more popular "Student Bodies".

16) HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME - A pretty good slasher that really plays more like a giallo. The bizarre ending adds to fun.

OCTOBER 9
17) PARANORMAL ACTIVITY - I thought the first person camera thing had been played out until I saw this creepy gem. It works on a primal level that really gets under your skin. Truly scary.

18) ASYLUM - One of the best Amicus anthologies. The crawling, wrapped body parts are awsome and so is the little gut filled robot!

10/8

21. Eraserhead (1977)
David Lynch could have had a fine career in Special Effects if he truly created the baby. I kept saying to myself, "That baby looks real".

22. The Omega Man (1971)
The second outing of "I Am Legend". I really wish Heston would have hopped into the Opel GT instead of the Mustang.

23. The Devil's Backbone (2001) Spanish
Guillermo del Toro uses the Spanish Civil War as an effective backdrop in this roots of evil story.

24. The Grudge 2 (2006)
The Traveling Grudge's Vol. 2. Not just an Americanized version of Ju-on 2 it has its moments and reminds us to be polite at breakfast.

10/9

25. Dreamcatcher (2003)
Maybe the title is the reason this bombed at the box office. I haven't read the book so I can't comment on the transition. Good performances and special effects.

26. Cat's Eye (1985)
A decent King outing although a part reeks of Trilogy Of Terror.

27. Creepshow (1982)
Similar to multistory comics in that some stories are better than others. Proof that dancing in the movies should be limited to waltz's and other slower numbers, these performances did not pass the test of time.

28. Black Moon (1934)
Voodoo, Fay Wray and why horror films need to be judged according to the times. Pre Club Med, civil rights and non-mainstream religion must have scared someone in 1934.

10/10

29. Godzilla, King Of The Monsters (1956)
Somewhat of a chore compared to watching Gojira.

30. Shutter (2008)
American Japanese remake of a Thai movie. Need to see the original to compare.

31. Scanners (1981)
The late Patrick McGoohan gives a nice performance in a semi historically based film. Michael Ironside gets his breakout role.

32. Motel Hell (1980)
I'm probably going against the grain on this one but it wasn't up to the hype. Has its moments but strains too hard in the wrong directions.

10/11

33. The Haunted House Of Horror(aka Horror House) (1969)
Symbolic rock and roll played at parties should never be more than one song long.

34. The Great Yokai War (2005)
Takashi Miike presents some horror-fantasy that all but the very young can watch. This may be the biggest surprise for me this year. The version I saw had subtitles so it may require reading skills or a nice person to read aloud to the non readers.

10/12

35. I Am Legend (2007)
The latest outing of the Richard Matheson classic. In comparison to the previous movies(Last Man On Earth, The Omega Man) the adaptation is good but the special effects are disappointing, notably the infected.

10/13

36. Edgar Allan Poe's Tales Of Terror (1962)
Roger Corman's Poe series has a consistent team and therefore a consistent feel. Price looks at home but in this trilogy Peter Lorre steals the show.

37. Edgar Allan Poe's Pit And The Pendulum (1961)
Art Director Daniel Haller really deserves a lot of credit for these sets considering the film's entire budget was $300,000. Vincent Price gets a good vehicle to demonstrate his versatility.

10/14

38. Evil Dead (1981)
Raimi, Campbell and Company show you don't need a big budget to make one of the best horror movies of all time.

39. Evil Dead II (1987)
If I saw this before I didn't remember it. It's a shame that the intro couldn't be compiled from Evil Dead. More comedy less scare.

40. Army Of Darkness (1992)
I wished that Sarah Berry had gone through the tunnel with Bruce. This has always seemed to me as an homage to Ray Harryhausen.

41. Dracula II: Ascension (2003)
I liked this more than I was expecting. Solid special effects and a bit of thought.

42. Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday The 13th (2000)
Parody Popcorn. Next viewing will occur in 5-10 years.

43. Black Sabbath (1963)
Supposedly the Italian version is better than this AIP release. This movie contains one of the most politically incorrect lines ever uttered.

10/15

44. Masters Of Horror: Incident On And Off A Mountain Road (2005)
This was the first time viewing any MOH films and it got better as it progressed.

45. Masters Of Horror: The V Word (2005)
Okay but not as solid as the previous entry. A bit predictable.

Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

Part 1

October 8
Tremors has always been a favorite of mine since I was young. It's a lighthearted monster movie romp that entertains from start to finish. RATING 8/10

This movie embodies everything I love about Halloween. There was such hype surrounding it that when I first watched it I initially felt a little let down. After thinking about it more and reading more about it once my mind moved past all the hype and I really started thinking about the movie I started realizing how much I really liked it so I decided to pop it back in for a second viewing and it just clicked so much more this time. I have a new favorite Halloween movie. RATING 9/10

October 9
It's a shame Tokyo Zombie wasn't better because I actually really enjoyed it at the start. But then something happened and it just started falling flat and getting boring, ruining more than half the film. Of course it doesn't help that I watched this on netflix which forces me to sit through the goofy english dubbing track but I have a sneaking suspicion that even subtitles wouldn't have saved me from the snooze fest that this becomes. RATING 5/10

I really did not like this movie. Someone from the discussion forum told me I needed to look at it as a teen sex comedy rather than any sort of horror. My problem is I tend to hate teen sex comedies and even then I have seen far better than this. The immature, dumbed down humor just never did much for me and this movie has plenty of it. Maybe I'm biased but I hated this movie RATING 4/10

After watching Tokyo Zombie and Night of the Living Dorks I was very reluctant to put on another foreign horror movie tonight so I decided to browse my own collection rather than rely on netflix again. What I came to was Boxer's Omen, a movie I had been meaning to watch for ages and never got around to. All I can say is thank god because this movie saved my night. It's a very simple good versus evil tale but the plot isn't really the star of the show here anyways. This movie is bizarre and boy is it a whole lot of fun. All the black magic is weird as hell and the effects look great. RATING 8/10

October 10
I really liked Joe Dante's entry into MOH, I suppose that could be because my political stance lies closely to the one taken in the film. While this movie isn't straight horror it was a breath of fresh air in the series and I have to hand it to Dante to put out something like this, which few people in Hollywood would dare to do. RATING 7/10

It's a bad thing when a movie almost entirely about lesbians can't even keep me interested. The characters are downright annoying and the story is boring. I will admit the final act can be a little fun but why is it such a chore to get there? RATING 4/10

Thank you Don Coscarelli for saving my MOH marathon, after watching Sick Girl I wasn't so sure about this anymore but you changed all that. While it's not exactly paving new ground in the genre it does a damn good job at what it is. I really like the whole survivalist training, fighting back angle. The thing that really helps push the movie through is the performances. Bree Turner is fantastic as the lead. She has a sympathetic look to her while at the same time you believe it when she gets up and has to kick a little ass. Embry and De Santis also do a fine job with their roles but the most enjoyable person to watch was Angus Scrimm playing a crazy old man. Everything just fit so well together in this movie, it's the first from the series I feel like I would actually go back and watch again. RATING 9/10

The best thing about this movie is the atmosphere, it does a fantastic job in that regard. The basement where most of the movie takes place is downright creepy. It's a good thing for that because I can't say the story did a whole lot for me. Pulsipher and Haddock save the story for me a bit as they both are excellent in their roles. RATING 6/10

It really is a shame that the series creator came up with the absolute worst entry. This movie was not tense, not scary, not really much of anything but a bore. An interesting enough premise but it is just executed so poorly. 3/10

I was going to end my night after Chocolate but it was so terrible that I decided to push through on to another one. My next choice was John Landis and thankfully he didn't disappoint. This movie is goofy, really goofy but I loved every minute of it. Nice gore, nice performances, good laughs. It was just a good time and after it was all finished I felt like the terrible Chocolate was finally washed out of my head and I could get some sleep. RATING 8/10

October 11
I didn't have high hopes for this one because I'm really not into the whole period films but this one gave me a pleasant surprise. The performances are excellent, everyone in involved does a great job. It takes a little while to get things really rolling but once they do it's a pretty twisted little tale. RATING 7/10

Wow, this movie has everything. Necrophilia, gang rape, dismemberment, melting people. I almost feel ashamed that I haven't seen this till now. The effects in this movie certainly have a special way to them and I don't think i've ever seen anything quite like them. RATING 9.5/10

Do I really need to have a write up for this? Oh well, Dexter isn't quite what it was when it first aired but I'm still always glad to have it back every year. It's great to see John Lithgow joining the cast. RATING 7/10

October 12
I own a few of his movies and I can't really explain why because I've never liked Takashi Miike all that much. I think his movies are shot beautifully but I always feel like something is missing. Like he tries to hard to push the envelope on whats on screen that certain other aspects go a little unattended. I don't know, maybe they just don't click for me. Anyways on to Imprint, I can see why this movie was never aired. It's a pretty brutal and strange tale and even with how completely desensitized I feel towards horror some parts had me cringing. It's not an easy film to watch. Next up, the acting. Which is pretty terrible. Most notably Billy Drago does a absolutely horrible job. He hams it up so much that in scenes where it's supposed to be serious and tense I just want to laugh instead. RATING 5/10

A good horror remake? I couldn't believe what I was seeing but this was actually a good movie. The cast all plays their parts perfectly and the movie is well unflinching and unnerving at time. I admit I haven't seen the original so I'm not sure how it stacks up, but on it's own right this is a great little horror movie. RATING 8/10

October 13
This movie really surprised me. It's just good ol lowbrow fun. If you can go into thinking that you might enjoy it. All the actors play their roles fine enough, it helps that Chris Kattan has never annoyed me. I know that might be a problem for some people. Most notably though is Brian Posehn as a zombie, just simply awesome. RATING 7/10

I love Re-Animator and From Beyond so I was really looking forward to this one. While it didn't quite live up to either of those films it's still one of the best entries in the series. I really admire that they opted out of using CG. Most of the MOH that imply cg just end up looking cheesy and cartoony, completely ruining any kind of tension they had going. RATING 7.5/10

A direct to dvd sequel and it's good? I never really thought I would be saying those words but right from the opening sequence the movie was a blast. I didn't really buy in to the whole reality tv survival show but at least it did set up a premise for why they were there. Sure the characters are all pretty stereotypical but the movie is fast paced, gory, and best of all has Henry Rollins which more than makes up for it's most by the books presentation. RATING 7.5/10

October 14
I really don't get the fuss behind Tobe Hooper. Other than the influential Texas Chainsaw Massacre I think he has had far more misses than hits. I'll be placing this with his big list of misses. While it's not terrible it really isn't all that good. RATING 5/10

Again, not bad for a direct to dvd sequel. This one did not live up the excitement of Wrong Turn 2. I really enjoyed the premise though and the action was good but some of the cg gore broke the feel of it and just seemed out of place. Honestly it's not so bad but the last minute of the film is so stupid that it completely brings down it's rating from me. RATING 5/10

Holy crap it's great to have Raimi back. I haven't had that much fun with a horror movie in quite some time. I'm sure there's not to much I need to write here because just about everyone that likes horror should see this movie. My only gripe is with the CG but it's not really that bad and not all that often. This is one hell of a movie. RATING 9.5/10

I always liked dry humor. It's weird trying to explain why something is funny even though I'm not necessarily laughing. That's what this movie is to me, basically the dry humor version of Shaun of the dead. Well not plot wise, but you know in terms of quality new zombie comedies. Billy Connolly is cast perfectly as Fido and the rest of the actors all do an excellent job. I know I bring up performances a lot in my reviews and it may seem silly since horror isn't known for the best but it can still make or break a movie for me. Luckily the cast hits on all the right notes especially Tim Blake Nelson who is always fun to see in any role he plays. It's not the perfect movie and it's not as laugh out loud funny as Shaun but I think it ranks up there. RATING 8/10

Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

Damn it... I'm in!

EDIT: Added titles 25-40 10-26-2009; tweaked a few reviews
EDIT: Added titles 41-50 11-01-2009; minor tweaking

Bold indicates first-time viewing
** = Wildcard
(.)(.) = "Palm'ed Orbs" Prize for Female Frontal Nudity
  1. My Dear Killer - A giallo film only notable for music by Ennio Morricone, decapitation by heavy construction equipment and one particularly effective kill involving a power saw.
  2. My Bloody Valentine (1981) - I'm not sure why I waited so long for this one. The practical effects look surprisingly good even in this day.
  3. Critters 2 (.)(.) - I'm a little shocked that this movie is rated PG-13.
  4. Zombie Honeymoon - I didn't identify with either of the newlyweds. Also, asking us to believe that this young, nonconformist, anti-establishment couple would still respect the vows of marriage for some reason is a little too much.
  5. Doomsday - It got a fairly bad rap when it was theatrically released. However, I think the movie improves upon subsequent viewings.
  6. Rabid - Classic Cronenberg. A pretty inspired low-budget re-imagining of the vampire myth for the "Free Love" era.
  7. Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks - The filmmakers attempt to put a new spin on the "Frankenstein's Monster" by making it a revived Neanderthal man, but it's just not enough to rescue the film from horrible pacing. Also, the voyeuristic rapist dwarf character was pretty annoying.
  8. Spooky Encounters - Hopping vampire kung-fu. You're either going to love it, or you're going to be left scratching your head. The incredibly politically incorrect ending is a real howler.
  9. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit** - I'm not sure Nick Park and Aardman Animation can do wrong (when it comes to stop-motion).
  10. Gotham (.)(.) - Tommy Lee Jones plays a gumshoe hired by a wealthy man to get rid of the man's wife (Virginia Madsen). The trouble is that she has been dead for ten years. The movie plays like an extended homage to old noir films with a supernatural twist, which isn't to say that's a bad thing.
  11. Piranha II: The Spawning - It's solely interesting as one of the first indications of James Cameron's fascination with shipwrecks. The rest of it is more like a trainwreck than anything else.
  12. Andy Griffith Show, "The Haunted House" ** - Perhaps not the best episode of the series, but it's seasonally appropriate.
  13. Fright Night - I've always liked Roddy McDowell's performance as the aging horror host, but I don't think I've ever given Chris Sarandon what's due to him for his performance as Jerry Dandridge. Also, knowing what happened to Amanda Bearse and Stephen Geoffreys after this movie was made really increased the inescapably homoerotic tone that many vampire stories have.
  14. Blue Sunshine - Zalman King plays a man wrongly accused of throwing three women into a roaring fireplace. Desperately attempting to prove his innocence, he uncovers the secret of a up-and-coming politician. It turns out the politician used to manufacture a form of LSD called "Blue Sunshine" when he was in college, and it's turning whoever took it into crazed, bald killers. Far more entertaining than it deserves to be.
  15. The Disturbance - A hopelessly confused film about a mentally-ill young man who may or may not be killing young (and frequently naked) women. Decent practical effects, and a textbook example of a low budget working in a movie's favor.
  16. War of the Gargantuas - The timeless tale of a war that pitted brother against brother, Frankenstein against Frankenstein... Gargantua against Gargantua! Ishiro Honda and his regular collaborators bring the goods for this non-Godzilla offering. Russ Tamblyn is frequently shown wondering what he's doing in this movie.
  17. Razorback - VHS. I was expecting something closer to Jaws, but the film does look pretty slick. Some great shots of the Outback.
  18. Mausoleum - Bobbi Bresee frequently bares her breasts when not turning into a rubbery demon (upon which, the aforementioned breasts turn into shriveled heads with working teeth). Pretty hard to watch, even with Marjot Gortner's 100-Watt personality.
  19. Blood Song - Frankie Avalon ditches Annette to stalk a chubby teenage girl who develops an unwelcome psychic bond with Avalon after receiving a life-saving blood transfusion. Avalon plays a hatchet-wielding flutist. Richard Jaeckel earns a paycheck playing the girl's belligerently overprotective father.
  20. Posed for Murder (.)(.) - Playboy Playmate Charlotte Helmkamp plays a pin-up model and aspiring actress who's being harassed by a mysterious killer who is dispatching her numerous admirers. The only thing that keeps this movie from being utterly forgettable is a couple of "movie-in-movie" moments.
  21. The Oblong Box - On television. Vincent Price plays a nobleman who locks his cursed brother up in the family estate. The brother hatches an overly-complicated escape plan and winds up in the custody of a grave-robbing doctor played by Christopher Lee. The brother then proceeds to exact his revenge, wearing a crimson hood to hide his disfigured face. The kills seem rather tame, even in comparison with other films of the period. The killer slits his victims' throats with all the urgency of a woman shaving in a Lady Gillette commercial. Some anti-Imperialist sentiment, but otherwise not much else going on beneath the hood of this story (apparently based on a story by Edgar Allen Poe).
  22. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Fool for Love" ** - I know there are a few episodes specifically set during Halloween, and the episode where Buffy fights and defeats Dracula seems like a no-brainer. However, "Fool for Love" is one of my favorite episodes of the series, as it seems to hallmark changes in direction for two main characters.
  23. Carnival of Souls (Theatrical Cut) - It's shorter but no less spooky. I can't really recommend the shorter version, but I can't say that one would be missing much if they never see the extended director's cut.
  24. R-Point - 1972: A unit of Korean soldiers fighting in the Vietnam conflict are sent into the titular R-Point to find the source of radio transmissions apparently coming from a battalion that was supposedly killed in action. While far from perfect, it's a perfectly serviceable ghost story. A bleeding radio is involved.
  25. Evil Dead - VHS. A deserved classic. A true feat of low-budget filmmaking.
  26. Evil Dead 2 - VHS. If the first film is a master class in scares and tense moments, then the second film is the first film screened in a funhouse mirror. Lots of gore, but the scares are less satisfying the second time around.
  27. Army of Darkness - VHS. I'm not sure how I feel about the final installment of this trilogy. It's amusing. In some aspects, it verges on being narcissistic. Bruce Campbell gets some killer lines.
  28. Murder Party - The back of the case exclaims that Murder Party is "Napoleon Dynamite Meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre!" However, the movie is more like the abortive product of a union between Napoleon Dynamite and Chainsaw. It's not really a comedy; it's not really a horror flick. Also, many of the actors could work as celebrity impersonators and probably do.
  29. Biozombie - Director Wilson Yip delivers a fairly solid zombie flick and manages to incorporate footage from the "House of the Dead" video game in a way that makes sense.
  30. Monster House ** - I'm not a fan of CGI motion capture films, but the art direction in this film is top-notch. Decent performances from the celebrity cast.
  31. Resident Evil: Degeneration - Japan continues to stare into the chasm of the Uncanny Valley with this extended video game cutscene. It's still head-and-shoulders above the live-action renditions. I can't believe there's going to be four of them!
  32. Night of the Living Dead (1968) - I've seen this film multiple times, and it still manages to maintain a certain tense energy.
  33. Dawn of the Dead (1978) - My favorite of Romero's first three "Dead" movies. Some wonderful social commentary.
  34. Day of the Dead - Maybe it's the change in location from Pittsburgh to Florida, but the final picture in the original "Dead" trilogy left me feeling a little cold. Some of the characters were a little too cartoony for my tastes. Also, this movie is where the whole "Zombies are people, too!" idea is planted. Incredible special makeup effects by Tom Savini.
  35. The Hidden - Kyle MacLachlan and Michael Nouri team up as an FBI agent and a cop (before Twin Peaks!) in this thriller about an alien criminal with the ability to move from body to body. Modest creature effects. Directed by Jack Shoulder (Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge).
  36. The Return of the Living Dead - The film that rewrote the zombie genre. Great performances from Clu Gulager, James Karen and Don Calfa. Lots of fun.
  37. Werewolf of Washington - Dull political satire involviing a werewolf (played by Dean Stockwell) working for a Nixonian administration. There's not much to recommend this film. Never has the interior of the White House looked so tacky.
  38. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark - This film admittedly leans to the comedy side of the horror-comedy spectrum, but there are a couple of special effects (and I'm not talking about Cassandra Peterson's chest). Aside from a couple of badly aged gags involving Flashdance and Rambo, the movie is campy, trampy fun.
  39. Night of the Comet - An all-time favorite of mine. A completely unaffected performance from Kelli Maroney, as well as solid turns from Catherine Mary Stewart and Mary Woronov.
  40. The Monster Squad - It's up to a gang of kids to protect the world from the classic movie monsters. Dracula! Frankenstein's Monster! The Mummy! The Wolfman! The Gill Man! An early effort from Fred Dekker and Shane Black, it's a strange, occasionally dark film. In this age of PG-13 remakes of horror classics, there's not a studio today would greenlight a film like this without yanking its fangs.
  41. The Munsters, "My Fair Munster" (pilot) ** - It's strange to think that this is what the actual series might have been. The pilot episode's rendition of Eddie Munster is profoundly disturbing.
  42. Swamp Thing (Non-Anamorphic) (.)(.) - Wes Craven delivers a schlocky, low-budget adventure yarn based on the character from DC Comics. All the long-distance shots of Swamp Thing stalking around in the swamps made me think that Craven was inspired in part by the infamous footage of Bigfoot walking into the woods. The original, non-anamorphic pressing of this film included additional footage of Adrienne Barbeau's bathing scene and other unessential (but appreciated) nudity.
  43. Happy Birthday to Me - By the end, I wasn't sure if director J. Lee Thompson had intended the movie to be some sort of slasher parody. The trailer promises "Six of the Most Bizarre Murders You Will Ever See," but they're not all that unusual.
  44. Legacy of Blood (A.K.A., Blood Legacy) - Not the Andy Milligan film, but a cheap, plodding slasher flick about a group of siblings that must live together in the family estate for a week in order to inherit the patriarch's (John Carradine) fortune. The ending will either have you chuckling or groaning at its awfulness.
  45. Night of the Creeps - This is the film that I've been waiting all month for. Slug-like extraterrestrial parasites crash on Earth, and it's up to a weird-looking kid and Tom Atkins to exterminate them. The script and direction by Fred Dekker is continually changing in tone, keeping the viewer pleasantly off-balance. An incredibly charismatic performance from Steve Marshall as J.C.
  46. The Devil's Wedding Night - Another Italian schlocker that squanders a novel premise. The Schiller Twins discover that the Wagnerian Ring of the Nibelung exists and resides in Transylvania at Castle Dracula. They encounter the comely Countess Dracula, who uses one of the Schillers to become the vessel for her late husband. There are bared breasts aplenty and softcore lesbianism on display, but it isn't enough to keep this film from dragging. The film is curious in that it's a vampire film, and it's largely devoid of Christian iconography.
  47. The Lost Boys - Jason Patric gets involved with a bad crowd of bloodsuckers, and it's up to Corey Haim to save him. Like The Monster Squad, the film plays like two worlds colliding. However, the results are vastly less rewarding in this case.
  48. Ghostbusters
  49. Ghostbusters II - I haven't seen this one in a while. It's definitely sillier than the original, but it still manages to entertain.
  50. Shaun of the Dead

Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

Sorry; I'm a bit behind on logging these. It's tough because I'm trying to squeeze in every last bit of baseball I can, which obviously cuts into horror movie watching time. Plus, we've had younger extended family members around a lot. My cousin is mature enough to get into horror, but she won't watch anything older than she is (at 14). My niece is seven, so when we had her over, we talked her into watching Monsters, Inc. which at least knocked out a G-rated movie (as well as one that won an Academy Award!). There's no way we're hitting 100, unless the kids stay away and the remaining baseball series are all sweeps.

Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

Part 1
Part 2

October 15
Well the plot's not all that exciting but thankfully the execution is fantastic. My fiance had told me how much she disliked it when she saw it so I was a little weary to check it out but boy am I glad I did. It was a real nice change of pace to have a zombie film set in the Carribbean rather than an inner city and the gore was over the top which is exactly how I like it. One scene in particular even had me squirming a little which doesn't happen often anymore. Also this movie has probably the most memorable zombie fight I have seen. Zombie vs. shark, absolutely amazing. RATING 8.5/10

I went into this movie with the notion that it at least couldn't be as bad as the Tobe Hooper movie of the same name. Luckily it wasn't, but not by much. Now that's not to say I didn't enjoy this movie. I actually liked it a whole lot but I know it's extremely cheesy and some things are a little to off for me. I can buy the whole zombie running aspect, even though I understand how it's not possible I don't let it ruin a good zombie movie for me. What did irk me a little is how the zombies were running and yet they show them as being easily dismembered as if they were made of jelly which to me shows that they are heavily decayed. And if they are heavily decayed how can they run? Anyways I'm rambling to much, the movie is actually a lot of fun if you're okay with overly cheesy dialogue. RATING 7/10

October 16
This movie is everything I had hoped for and more. It does exactly what it sets out to, be a fantastic representation of old grindhouse exploitation movies. It is campy in every way and the gore deliveries nonstop. I don't think this movie held up or slowed down once. RATING 8.5/10

Maybe it's just because I liked his earlier entry, Deer Woman, so much that this felt like a letdown. Deer Woman was a fantastic little black comedy and Landis aims for that again and sadly falls a little flat. It's a shame too because it's a real treat seeing George Wendt. It's not bad it's just lacking the same substance that Deer Woman had. The twist at the end is a nice touch and livens up the final act a little. RATING 5.5/10

As I stated in an earlier review I love Re-Animator and From Beyond so I was really looking forward to this. It was a little different from what I thought it would be but still fantastic. Not quite the calibur of the two films I listed but still a great horror flick. One scene in particular was pretty crazy and memorable. RATING 7/10

Other than the original I never really liked Saw. And seeing how Bousman directed all of them except the original I wasn't sure how I was going to take Repo! Luckily Repo! hit's all the right notes, literally. From the very opening scene keying us in on the story with it stylish comic book panels I was hooked. From there the movie only gets better. The thing that really struck me was the visual style. From someone who couldn't decide whether to go to school for cinematography or Special FX this movie was just a blast to lay my eyes on. RATING 8/10

October 17
I've never really been a fan of slashers. I'm more of a supernateral horror fan. My tendencies lean towards zombies, vampires, werewolves, things of that nature. That's why Laid to Rest was such a pleasant surprise. I loved this movie. It pretty much follows Slasher 101 to a T but it pulls it off in the best of ways. The gore is great and the movie is paced perfectly. Before watching it I thought the whole chrome face thing was pretty stupid but once you see the villain in action it actually makes him look pretty creepy and memorable. My only gripe with the movie is that logic is apparently no where to be found. I know that's common in slashers but I mean there really is no logic whatsoever. RATING 8/10

A mash up of Frankenstein, Re-Animator, and 28 days later. To me that sounds like a hell of a movie, sadly when it's all said and done it falls flat. With the exception of the last 20-30 minutes almost nothing happens. Even when all the action is on screen during the ending it just falls flat. I wasn't expecting much out of this movie but even then I can't help but feel a little disappointed. RATING 4/10

I found out about this movie only a few weeks ago, when I read the description on imdb I couldn't wait to see it and went straight to tracking it down. Sadly the movie just doesn't live up to it's potential. The real problem for me is that the horror is dumbed down to take back seat to the comedy which sadly just isn't all that funny. That's not to say it doesn't have it's moments, it can be funny at times and luckily the films two stars do an excellent job. All I can really say is that I wish this had been better. RATING 6/10

This is my second time watching this movie and my fiance's first. When it ended she said to me "I thought that was going to be a horror comedy." And that's exactly what I remember expecting the first time I watched it. What I found instead was a tragic and heartbreaking little horror film. It surprised the hell out of me and I loved it. On my second viewing it's still as every bit heartbreaking. While there is gore the film doesn't rely on it and I think that's what I love so much about it. The most tense moments in the film happen when the gore isn't present. It might not be everyones cup of tea but I loved it. RATING 9/10

October 18
The tension is high, the suspense is overwhelming, and the gore is at a minimum. It takes a lot of courage to create a splatterless horror film these days which is why I commend David Moreau and Xavier Palud for their shot at horror. I was wondering why the runtime was so short at a mere 77 minutes but after seeing Them I completely understand. The movie works well but any longer and it would have been pushing into tedium. RATING 8/10

I always thought From Beyond was a little underrated. Most people I talk to have seen Re-Animator but have never heard of Gordon's From Beyond. While not as good as Re-Animator, From Beyond still hits on all the right notes and combines great performances, the right ammount of weird, humor, and effects. RATING 9/10

Episode 2 of the new season. RATING 7/10

I just commended David Moreau and Xavier Palud's Them(Ils) for being generally frightening without any of the splatter a few reviews up. [REC] creates the same dread, the same fright, and has all of the good splatter and make up effects. I've never been fond of the whole found tape horror but [REC] aims to change my mind. This movie is one hell of a ride, I haven't been this freaked out by a film in quite some time. Coupled with the amazing camerawork and that damned surround sound I found myself jumping constantly. You feel thrust into creepy apartment complex with all the characters, you freak out when they freak out. The whole movie is excellent and the final act is still creeping me out days later. A damn good movie RATING 10/10

October 19
The Goones mixed with classic horror monsters. Sound like the perfect movie? It was to me growing up. I can't count how many times I've seen this movie as a kid and now at the age of 23 it still holds up great. I might be blinded by nostalgia with my rating but I have a feeling most people would love this movie. RATING 9/10
"Wolfman's got nards"

Episode 3 of the new season RATING 7/10

Essentially Carrie for a new age. This movie didn't do much for me aside from the eye candy of Jenna Dewan. There were some somewhat creative kills but mostly the picture was just to boring for me. RATING 6/10

Episode 4 of the new season. RATING 8/10

October 20

Dante's last entry, Homecoming was a great little satire that I enjoyed quite a bit. The only problem was it never really delivered on the horror aspect. Well Screwfly certainly does. The story is intelligent and the performances are fantastic. RATING 7/0

One of my all time favorite horror movies. I don't think there is much to say here as most people have seen it and love it. You feel claustrophobic and the paranoia seeping in just like the characters. Not to mention Russel is just a badass. This is Carpenter at his finest. RATING 10/10

Another one of those movies that I can't quite believe I haven't seen. I have loved Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness for years and yet it took me this long to see where it all started. While the two sequels stray more into the horror/slapstick territory the original just stays straight creepy. And for a film it's age it sure did a damn fine job. The effects are aging but still gruesome. There is just so much energy put into this film I can't help but love it. RATING 9/10

As with The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 just exudes energy in every way. In it's short run time it never lets up. Combing horror and comedy perfectly. Both Raimi and Campbell are putting there all into this film and it shows. It's just one hell of a thrill ride and one that I'm always happy to revisit. RATING 9/10

George Sanders is the quintessential ball buster of cinema. No wonder Angela Lansbury got everyone to appear in Murder She Wrote, quite the looker in this film.

47. The Nanny (1965)
This ain't Mary Poppins, or is it?

48. Masters Of Horror: Dreams In The Witch House (2005)
Not familiar with the Lovecraft story so I can't comment about the adaptation. Was lacking something, just not sure what.

49. The Son Of Kong (1933)
Reminded me of Snowflake(the gorilla) and Rudloph The Red Nosed Reindeer.

50. Audrey Rose (1977)
I've never cared for Marsha Mason or John Beck although both are competent in their roles but Anthony Hopkins shines and Susan Swift really acts like she doesn't know what is going on(that's a compliment).

10/17

51. 20 Million Miles To Earth (1957)
The beast was great, the Italian fisherman were good and the rest so so.

52. Videodrome (1983)
This made a lot more sense when it came out due to its dependence on time. If you are old enough to remember lesser channels that showed off the wall programming it works.

53. Eaten Alive (1977)
I would have enjoyed this a lot more if it didn't have that Super 8 feel.

10/18

54. Hallucinations Of A Deranged Mind (1978) Brazil
This movie went much faster than I realized although I could have done with a few less screams of Tania.

55. Terrorvision (1986)
This could almost be a kids movie and probably should have aimed for a lower rating. Diane Franklin is almost unrecognizable.

56. The Lodger (1944)
A well done twist/theory on the Jack The Ripper murders. Laird Cregar's story is rather sad and unfortunate.

10/19

57. The Pumpkin Karver (2006)
I thought the beginning was great, as the title implies it's a slasher.

58. Cruel World (2005)
It only gets a thumbs up for making fun of reality shows but suffers from its vapid inspiration.

10/20

59. The Beast Of Hollow Mountain (1956)
Take a B cowboy movie, add a beast and voila. This would most likely be an A picture today.

60. Day Of The Dead (2008)
Lots of zombies, some as fast as Speedy Gonzalez but Speedy has better acting skills.

61. House Of 1000 Corpses (2003)
I'd watch this movie over just to hear Sheri Moon laugh. One guy somehow survives and ends up on The Office.

62. The Devil's Rejects (2005)
Who doesn't like a movie with a clown? Captain America, Col. Sanders and Emmett Kelly all rolled into one.

63. High Tension (2003) French
Worth a second viewing, it still holds up.

10/21

64. The Howling (1980)
Why do some werewolves end up with over-sized yorkie ears?

65. Desert Of Blood (2006)
I bet watching the audience during the test screenings was hilarious during the opening scene. Some people were watching the screen and some were watching those people.

66. It's Alive (1974)
I bet the FDA hates this movie. Sadly the re-release ad is not on the dvd.

10/22

67. It Lives Again (1978)
More little tykes mayhem.

68. It's Alive III: Island Of The Alive (1987)
All newborns are ugly but these babies never hit a cute stage.

69. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Polaroid should have done some tie ins at Halloween with the creepy camera sound. The original company might still be in business today if they had.

70. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)
The American way to enter a man's home.

71. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) thumbs up
Another oil and gas mix remake but this time the inbreeding has been more active.

  4. Zombie Honeymoon - I didn't feel any attachment for the newlyweds.
  5. Doomsday - It got a fairly bad rap when it was theatrically released. However, I think the movie improves upon subsequent viewings.
  6. Rabid - Classic Cronenberg.
  12. Andy Griffith Show, "The Haunted House"** - Perhaps not the best episode of the series, but it's seasonally appropriate.
  24. R-Point - 1972. A unit of Korean soldiers fighting in the Vietnam conflict are sent into the titular R-Point to find the source of radio transmissions apparently coming from a battalion that was supposedly killed in action. While far from perfect, it's a perfectly serviceable ghost story. A bleeding radio is involved.

Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

Personal Goal: to watch at least one movie a day for the month of October

Bold = first time viewing
WC = Wild Card

001. Alice, Sweet Alice (AKA Communion or Holy Terror)
1977, Directed by Alfred Sole

An effective and creepy little movie. The camerawork is amazing throughout the film. It feels Hitchcockian in spots. Paula Sheppard is well-cast as the troubled Alice. The killer's motivation could have been a bit clearer but overall, this movie brings the goods. And is that mask ever spooky! Grade: B

002. Coffin Joe--At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul
1963, Directed by José Mojica Marins

I appreciate that Marins gave Brazil its first-ever horror film and has nutured the franchise, but I couldn't get into this one. I appreciate it for what it is and realize that is was controversial in its time, but nothing else. My biggest gripe is that Coffin Joe really needed an adversary to make this more convincing. Dracula had Van Helsing--Coffin Joe needed someone who would stand up to him. And that movie set was postage stamp small. Marins was like Godzilla towering over it. Grade: C

003. April Fool's Day
1986, Directed by Fred Walton

A fun movie, though you can figure out everything 15 minutes into it. Still, it was well-paced and while the re-watch value is practically zero, it doesn't take away from things if it's the first time you're watching it. Just have fun with this one. Grade: B-

004. The Hearse
1980, Directed by George Bowers

In light of movies like Halloween and TCM coming out before this one, The Hearse feels rather quaint. It really came out 10 years too late for its own good. Trish Van Devere is solid as the haunted woman and the build-up of suspense is okay. The music is pretty good. It's too bad that the ending doesn't match up with the rest of the film. Grade: C+

005. The Lost
2008, Directed by Chris Siverston

Hated this one. It's such a mess. It felt like five decades bled into the movie--half the cast was dressed like Brady Bunch extras and the other half wore modern clothes. Ray's makeup was distracting. WTF was up with that eyeliner mole? And what about the beer cans in his boots? They needed a better explanation. Ray came off as a Twilight reject. I could never figure out what they were going for with this one. Terrible movie. Grade: D

006. Black Christmas
1974, Directed by Bob Clark

Loved it! I can't believe that I've gone for so long without seeing it until now. The ending was great--what you can't see is a lot more frightening. And someone using your phone as a weapon against you--for them to be that close to you--is super scary. The precursor for all unseen/masked psycho killers. Grade: A-

007. Who Can Kill a Child?
1975, Directed by Chicho Ibáñez-Serrador

A very creepy movie where children, without provocation, begin acting like adults and go on a murdering rampage. The concept is well-executed and it results in a thought-provoking film that stays with you after the credits roll. A good flick. Grade: B+

008. Blind Beast
1969, Directed by Yasuzo Masumura

A story of obsession taking people to the most dark and depraved of places. It makes you question how far would you go to achieve happiness and fulfillment. Not sure if I like the movie that much because of the chuvanist undertones, but it makes you think and I do like that. Grade: B

009. Scream Bloody Murder
1973, Directed by Marc B. Ray

A B-movie about a momma-obsessed boy who becomes ifriends with a hooker and thenkidnaps her. I thought this was a pretty good little movie. The main actors are solid and while the plot is a bit rushed, there's some sense of character development and the movie works hard to present its story. It's pretty decent. Grade: B-

010. Martin
1977, Directed by George A. Romero

A story about a young woman whose family believes that he carries the vampire curse--but is Martin just a deeply troubled young man in need of medical help? Shooting the film in gloomy Pittsburgh adds to the film's depressing tone. It makes you question whether it's worth holding on to the old wives' tales that we learn as children or if those tales cause us to not see things clearly. I liked this one. Grade: B

011. Pulse
2001, Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa

A new website promising interactions with ghosts has captured the attention of Toyko's residents. And now many of those people are either killing themselves or disappearing altogether. A good film about how we've become obsessed with technology and how that has isolated us from each other, that we don't notice when someone is gone much anymore. No gore in this film, but thought-provoking in showing how we can create terror in our own lives. I liked it. Grade: B+

The Call of Cthulhu (WC)
2005, Directed by Andrew Leman

A 47-minute film based on a HP Lovecraft story; released by the HP Lovecraft Historical Society. They did it as a black-and-white silent film. It's pretty cool. Grade: B+

012. Hatchet
2007, Directed by Adam Green

A 1980s slasher flick done in this decade. I liked it a lot. Tons of humor, but when it's time for killing, nothing is spared! A likeable cast with appearances from horror icons Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, and Tony Todd. A lot of people won't like it in this post-Scream era, but enjoy it for the blast of fun it is. Grade: B+

013. The Blood Splattered Bride
1972, Directed by Vicente Aranda

Barely average Eurotrash horror flick based on LeFanu's novella Carmilla. Alexandra Bastedo is solid and Carmilla/Mircalla but everyone else's acting is pretty stiff. There are a couple of decent stab-em-up scenes. If you're a fan of this kind of flick, it's worth a watch. Everyone else can skip it. Grade: C-

014. Who Saw Her Die?
1972, Directed by Aldo Lado

A giallo starring George Lazenby who chases after whoever killed his young daughter. As expected with giallo, the movie is beautifully shot and Ennio Morricone's musical score is really good. The movie is fairly run of the mill, but the subject of child murder gives it an edge. Gotta say that Lazenby looked awful in this movie--gaunt and sickly. Not very 007-like at all. Grade: B

015. My Bloody Valentine
1981, Directed by George Mihalka

Fantastic! A well-done 1980s slasher film with likeable characters. The kills were creative and the gore is solid even after 28 years. The Family Tree of Terror special feature is a great touch on the SE. Well worth to put this one in your DVD collection. Grade: A-

016. The Killing Kind
1973, Directed by Curtis Harrington

A creepy flick about a young man returning home after spending time in prison for rape, with the people who helped send him to the slammer coming up dead. Disturbing on a number of fronts with Ann Sothern giving a dirty performance as the over-protective mother trying to keep her son out of harm's way. A sleazy little number with dark undertones. A solid movie with a stabbing edge. Grade: B

017. Cravings
2006, Directed by D.J. Evans

This was a disappointing film because it had so much potential and it went to waste. A therapist whose wife commits suicide takes on the case of a teenaged girl who he comes to discover suffers from Renefield's Syndorome (clinical vampirism). It could have been a probing look into how something like being a vampire can be more about disturbed state of mind as opposed to the traditional folklore, but it just isn't dealt with in this movie. The acting is solid and the ending is okay, but I thought this one missed the mark, which is really too bad. Grade: C

018. Vampyr
1931, Directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer

Just goregous. Dreyer packed so much into just over an hour's time. The storyline is flimsy, but the art direction more than makes up for it. Everyone should watch this one at least once. Grade: A-

019. Scarecrows
1988, Directed by William Wesley

A group of ex-military outlaws rob a base and hijack a plane for their getaway. One of the outlaws decides to parachute out of the plane and take all of the money with him. The others quickly follow him. They wind up at an abandoned farm that has dozen of scarecrows scattered in a corn field. A run-of-the-mill B-movie that could have been better with some explanation concerning the missing farm owners/scarecrows. Comes across as just a group of friends who wanted to make a movie for kicks. Not that good but not too bad, either. Grade: C+

020. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
2007, Directed by Scott Glosserman

A good movie enhanced by its mockumentary style as a camera crew follows a supposed slasher as he plans his next big kill. Nathan Baesel is fantastic as the the title character and I bought into the crew's initial nonchalant attitude about Leslie's plans. Watching Leslie go through his process to prepare for his big night was funny, as was how past slasher Jason, Freddy, and Michael Meyers were portrayed as being real people. A blast to watch. Grade: B+

021. The Host
2007, Directed by Bong Joon-ho

Someone described to me as Godzilla meets Little Miss Sunshine. That seems about right. A family goes searching for their missing member--a little girl--who has been taken by a water monster whose existence is brought about because of careless dumping of chemicals into the river. It's cetainly a horror story in that searching for a lost child amid national chaos and dealing with a government that doesn't care about its people must be scary. But I enjoyed it more as a family-sticks-together saga. The only thing that bothered me was the monster's look. Being an overgrown tadpole isn't that scary. Good movie, nonetheless. Grade: B

022. Isle of the Dead
1945, Directed by Mark Robson

Boris Karloff is a tyrannical Greek general trapped on an island with a small group after a mysterious plague braks out. A housekeeper among the group thinks that a young servant girl is an evil spirit and is causing the death. This is an exploration of reality vs foklore with Karloff being the best thing about the movie by far. The actess is who plays the sickly wife is pretty good--everyone else is just kind of there. An average film, but pleasant enough to watch. Grade: C+

023. Bedlam
1946, Directed by Mark Robson

Karloff again, this time as a spiteful mental ward superintendent who has Anna Lee's Nell thrown into the hospital for demanding better treatment for patients. The supporting cast does a better job of holding their own against Karloff and the script for this one is much stronger. A good mixture of humor and pathos. Grade: B

024. Frontier(s)
2007, Directed by Xavier Gens

Basically The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with a French twist. Yasmine is pregnant and alone during the Paris race riots. She leaves the city with her ex-boyfriend and his two friends, who have just robbed a bank and have the police on their tail. The group finds their way to the French countryside, where they take shelter at a small inn. All hell breaks loose, of course. This is a brutal movie to watch and gave me a headache. It's non-stop violence and some of what the characters go through is just so over the top. A seriously bloody affair. An interesting movie, but not one you'll watch repeatedly. Grade: B

025. Eden Lake
2008, Directed by James Watkins

A young couple go to a reclusive quarry to spend a quiet weekend, which is disrupted by a group of local children who are just ready to explode with violence. An absolutely vicious film with one of the cruelest endings I've seen on film. So brutal, so realistic, so painful. There's a few holes in the plot, but nothing terrible. Admire the decent script and good acting, but you won't enjoy it in any normal sense. Grade: B or B+, depending on my mood

026. Day of the Dead
1985, Directed by George A. Romero

Not as groundbreaking as NIGHT. Not as socially informed as DAWN. But still, a very good movie with the war vs peace argument being the focus. A likeable cast helps push along the story. Tom Savini's special effects were great. Grade: B+

027. Black Sunday

Very gothic and gloomy. It really plays well with atmosphere. Acting is fine, but with her good looks, it's easy to see why Barbara Steele became a star. Grade: B

028. Dead Birds

What a disappointment. Set during the Civil War, a group of outlaws rob a bank and hide in an abandoned farmhouse where the former owner's sins are coming back to the surface. Solid idea, lousy execution. The pacing is slow and the acting is almost non-existent. Stay clear of this one. Grade: D

029. Wilderness

After the dath of a fellow inmate, a group of young criminals are taken to a remote island for character building, but find themselves being hunted down by a mysterious marksman. OK movie, but would have been better with a few less characters and a better explanation on the killer's preparation. Grade: C

030. Cello

The story of a music teacher being haunted by the death of a classmate. I was really into this one until the last 15 minutes or so, when it became too convoluted. They went for one twist tooo many in an attempt to set up a 'real vs fantasy' argument, but it kind of fell flat. Too bad, because the reast of the movie is pretty good. If you're into Asian horror, you may find this appealing. Grade: B-

031. Sleepaway Camp

How has this gem gotten past me for so long? Shy Angela is still reeling from the freak boat accident that killed her dad and brother when she is sent to Camp Arawak along with her cousin Ricky. Suddenly, people from around the camp start dying in grisly ways. Who's the killer? It's a solid film with a likeable cast, but watch this one for no other reason than the last 60 seconds. It will blow your mind to see this in a teen slasher flick. Holy smokes, I didn't see THAT coming at all! Grade: B+

032. Sleepaway Camp II

Not as good as the original, but entertaining nonetheless. Pamela Springsteen (Bruce's sister) does OK as Angela, though her take on the role is too cheerful as opposed to the more layered nuance of Felissa Rose in the first film. Grade: B-

033. In the Mouth of Madness

John Carpenter meets HP Lovecraft. Beautiful imagery, solid story. It won't be one of my favorites, but it was a decent movie with Sam Neill rocking it in his role. Grade: B

034. Inside

France is going for the gold when it comes to horror movies that mess with your head in the worst ways. The bloodflow in this one is jawdropping. Good movie and so damn disturbing. Grade: A-

035. The Devil's Backbone

Very good. Not as strong as The Innocents, but a well-told ghost story with several spooky moments. Del Toro's eye for imagery is magnificent. Grade: B+

036.The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

I really like this movie. Very creepy. If you want to learn more about German Expressionism, consider picking up this title as part of the Kino 4-film box set. Grade: A

037. Prom Night II

Caught it on THIS-TV. Typical 1980s teen horror flick. It was fine. Grade: C+

038. [REC]

One of my favorites from the month. Deserves all the praise it gets. Grade: A

039. Ils (THEM)

Another well-done French number. If visit France, I'm sticking to the cities. No countryside for me. Too many murdering weirdos and pyschotic freaks, based on their movies. Grade: A

040. The Nanny

Joey Fane returns home after spending two years in a mental hospital for killing his sister. Joey has always maintained that Nanny, played by Bette Davis, was responsible for his sister's death. But who did it? This is an effective who done it thriller with Davis giving a strong performance and a cast that rises to the challenge. Watch for Pamela Franklin, the little girl from THE INNOCENTS, as the upstairs neighbor. Grade: A

10/23

72. Ginger Snaps (2000)
This was kind of a sad werewolf movie. Didn't realize Mimi Rogers played the mom. Kris Lemche's moralistic drug dealer sets him up to later play God on Joan Of Arcadia.

73. Phantasm (1978)
There's a reason to use jack stands. May have increased sales of garbage disposals.

74. Audition (1999) Japan
Someday I'm going to either find the original novel or timeline and tree branch this movie to try and figure out what really took place.

75. Dragonwyck (1946)
Gothic horror somewhat akin to Rebecca. Some nice supporting roles from Harry Morgan and Jessica Tandy in their early years.

10/24

76. The Return Of The Living Dead (1985)
This was a fun one, sadly a censored AMC version. Will have to get the real thing for next year.

77. Jack The Ripper (1959)
Interesting Ripper motivation.

78. The Brain Eaters (1958)
It was great to see Leonard Nemoy(Nimoy) doing mannerisms that seem so associated with Mr. Spock.

79. The Fly (1958)
A great makeup job. Solid all around.

80. Poltergeist (1982)
I gave this movie another viewing and still don't like it. The loss of some of the younger actors is sad though.

10/25

81. An American Haunting (2005)
Gimme that old time religion.

82. Doctor X (1932)
This pre code two strip technicolor has some great moments and one of the funniest endings ever filmed.

10/26

83. The Beast Must Die (1974)
The shocker of this movie is that it wasn't made for tv. Absurdities abound.

84. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
Cheech being Cheech, but Tom Savini almost steals the show.

10/27

85. Underworld: Evolution (2006)
A tad confusing having not seen Underworld but enough action to keep you occupied.

86. Sisters (1973)
The story of Brian De Palma meeting with Bernard Herrmann always makes me laugh. Herrmann's sinister score is perfect for this sinister movie.

87. Frankenstein (1931)
The little girl should have had the biggest paycheck for that walk through town with her head bobbing all around.

88. The Mist (2007)
Patience - sometimes too much, sometimes not enough.

10/28

89. The Haunting (1963)
A coincidence that the wall shows up in The Evil Dead?

90. Village Of The Damned (1960)
Obviously inspired many directors and writers, still one of the best horror films to feature children.

10/29

91. The House Of The Devil (2009)
A little judicious editing could have made this better. I would not recommend this as a blind buy, it needs a viewing first.

92. The Thing (1982)
John Carpenter's remake is one of the best horror remakes out there. I almost wish Carpenter had done the soundtrack because it had a Carpenterish feel but not as good as his own work.

Killer Vultures? Really? The dvdtalk review of this states that it's not taken seriously but I couldn't help but get the impression that it was, although gallons of fake blood helped wash some of that feeling away. The acting is terrible and the plot is borderline retarded. The only saving grace was the gore which honestly I still didn't find to much to write home about. RATING 3/10

I actually like Severance quite a bit. I know some people think it's a bad mash of horror/comedy, sure it's no Shaun of the Dead but it's still a lot of fun. I know the characters are cliche but isn't that the point? RATING 7/10

I'm not one to write off a director(which is why to this day I'm still giving Tobe Hooper chance after chance)and it really payed off this time. After seeing Lucky McKee's Sick Girl I couldn't imagine I would like May whatsoever but after hearing good things I decided to give it a shot, boy was I surprised. Where I found McKee's direction and Bettis acting rather boring in Sick Girl they both were on their game in May. Maybe it's because I actually found the story before the horror parts in May interesting. RATING 8.5/10

Well the name certainly fits, this is one hell of a sick movie. Unrelenting at times and some scenes will just make you queasy. It's a shame the performances nearly ruined the one thing for me. It's a shame when the child actor shows up mostly everyone in the film. Leslie Andrews comes of as a stale Juno wannabe, which is another character which I absolutely detested in the first place. I've know kids like this my whole life, they aren't smart and they aren't hip, they are just douchebags and it's no fun to see them on film. RATING 6/10

I don't think any movie will ever quite have the effect on me that The Shining had the first time I saw it. Quite possibly one of the creepiest movies I've seen. The cinematography is absolute beautiful and the performances are just about as perfect as you can get, well Jack Nicholases at least. RATING 9/10

Retirement home Elvis and black JFK, what's not to love? I might catch shit for this but I think I actually enjoy Campbell more as Elvis than I do as Ash. He plays the part absolutely spot on and for what it is somehow manages to not overdo it. From the performances to the story to the over vibe this movie just oozes charm. It's nice to see something original coming out of the genre now and then. RATING 9/10

October 23
Come on it's Bill Goldberg playing a rampaging Santa Clause, if you can't find that awesome you take the horror genre to serious. This movie is just plain fun, sure it's not the best movie but again it's Goldberg playing a killer santa, and his viking adorned sleigh is powered by an ox! It's not possible to not have any fun whatsoever with this film. RATING 6.5/10

I really didn't get into this one as much. The characters were all annoying to me and the setting was pretty boring. Not exactly terrible for a remake, just the worst in the series RATING 5/10

This is essentially the original From Dusk Till Dawn just set in the wild west and you know what? After seeing FDTD2 I am more than okay with that. It brings back a lot of the fun that the first one had and the second was sorely missing. RATING 7/10

October 24
Cheesy and filled with all kinds of campy goodness. I love Army of Darkness, there is just something about the combination of Raimi and Campbell that can do no wrong for me. RATING 9/10

This is my third time watching Dead and Breakfast and I'm still not entirely sure what exactly to think of it. There are some parts that work really really well and are a whole lot of fun but others that just push it into the "were trying way to hard to be off the wall funny" for me. Overall a fun movie. RATING 7/10

Ah Slither, thank you for showing me that just doing a genre right is good enough some times. Not original at all and really more of a love letter to the genre slither works quite well. It's not the best movie in the world but it's a great escape into a fun little world of horror, comedy, and plenty of gross out moments. RATING 8/10

October 25
