On April 1st, the guys from "Mystery Science Theater 3000" and RiffTrax are adding their very own commentary to classic National Geographic Channel programs, featuring excerpts from "Honey Badgers," "Unlikely Animal Friends," "Man v. Monster," "Swamp Men," "Alpha Dogs," and more!

Yeah, I noticed in the comments section of the Screenrant article that there was erroneous info about the 'bots. I wonder if this is going to be a one-off April Fools Day thing, or if they're going to do more?
The 3 episodes are in my cable guide and set to record!

I remember that Mythbusters started out as a handful of specials as well.

I feel funny, I missed most of this show during it's original run so almost every set is something new. I'm pretty sure I've seen way more episodes via DVD than I ever did "live".

Wired has a new article with an oral history of MST3K, with most (all?) participants in the show interviewed:

Right at the end of the article is this little tidbit:

But this year Mystery Science Theater may finally get a long-rumored, heavily anticipated reboot. This spring Hodgson is hoping to start a new online incarnation of the show, one that will feature a fresh (and as-yet-unannounced) host and cameos from many MST3K alumni.
Hodgson: I’ve talked to a bunch of fans about their lives and what MST3K means to them. I’m overwhelmed by how people took to that show. It really affected them. I thought, if enough people still love it, maybe we can bring it back.
Even avid viewers sometimes don’t realize that every major role in the show had been swapped out over time. So in my mind, the show is built to be refreshed with new people and new ideas. It’s like Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle as it applies to MST3K: If it doesn’t change, it’s not the same show. And fortunately for us, as long as there are movies, there are always going to be cheesy movies.

Also, slightly older news, but TV channel RetroTV is going to start running MST3K reruns starting in July:

I read elsewhere that they have the rights to 22 episodes.

Matthew Golden, Luken’s Vice President of Production, said “We are absolutely thrilled to return Mystery Science Theater 3000 to the airwaves. With its marriage of sharp humor and vintage films, MST3k is tailor-made for Retro TV, and our audience will fall in love with it all over again.”
Mystery Science Theater 3000 will make its Retro TV debut in the “not-too-distant future”: Saturday, July 5th, 2014.

Re: Official MST3K / Rifftrax / Cinematic Titanic DVD Thread
I just purchased Manos The Hands of Fate for the third time. And Rifftrax just put it on DVD as well, so I might end up with a fourth copy. I may have a problem.

Shout! is selling the slipcover for the DVDs that were in the 25th anniversary tin, it's free but $5.99 shipping.
I bought one.

Just click on the link for the slipcover and don't add anything else to your cart.

I know that Shout Factory mixes the hosts up in the sets so that fans can see both. But I DON'T see why they don't also put out individual episodes so that you could pick and choose. They have the rights for the episodes, but are they only for sets?

Because they don't want you to pick and choose. They want you to buy everything.

There's also probably rights costs to consider. When negotiating movie rights, it's likely that some cost more than others. With the box sets, they can even out the costs by mixing together a few cheaper episodes with a really pricey one; if they were released solo, they'd have to be priced differently or charge a higher overall price per disc.
Shout has released a few solo titles. I'm guessing they don't sell as well though since only people wanting specifically that title will get that disc. And while I personally want to collect every episode, I tend to lean towards buying the sets as they seem a better value.

The individual releases are re-releases of titles from box sets that Rhino put out. Usually those went out of print due to one problematic title, so Shout started putting out the ones they could.
But they didn't sell well, so they stopped.
Hasn't Shout made individual episodes available for release on iTunes? I know they had been, but it's been a while since I checked.

Re: Official MST3K / Rifftrax / Cinematic Titanic DVD Thread
The sets aren't a good value if you only want one host or the other. I only want Mike episodes. So 40 or 50 dollars for a set that has, at best, only two watchable episodes is a waste of money for me.
