Re: Criterion Newsletter - August 2009

The fine folks at the Criterion Forum (.org) seem to have it figured out.

Spoiler:
The horse is from the cover of Kagemusha, and 2010 is the 100th anniversary of Kurosawa's birth. So, expect more Kurosawa next year!

A few possibilities: Hidden Fortress re-issue, The Most Beautiful, Sanshiro Sugata, Those Who Make Tomorrow, Seven Samurai on Blu-ray

Re: Criterion Newsletter - August 2009

It's this. No Blu-rays, and apparently none of the pre-existing extras, though these new extras are listed:
# "The Warrior's Camera: The Cinema of Akira Kurosawa", a book by Stephen Prince
# Book features an introduction and notes on each film by Stephen Prince
# "Films of Akira Kurosawa," a remembrance by Donald Richie
# Includes 4 films never released on DVD
# All films have new digital transfers
# Deluxe linen-bound collector's set includes 25 films plus illustrated book
The four new films are The Men Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail (1945), The Most Beautiful (1944), Sanshiro Sugata (1943) and Sanshiro Sugata, Part II (1944). Hopefully those will be available separately down the line, or at least to rent from Netflix. Either way, this is a definite pass.
