Re: J.J. Abrams Star Trek Due Out Nov. 17th!

The only beef i have with upgrading to blu, is that my current surround sound system can't do looseless at all, and i really can't afford a new 700 buck system plus another 2 or 300 for a decent player, so i'll stick w/ dvd for now

If that's your only beef it's hardly worthy of keeping you from upgrading.

First, a decent Blu-ray player will now cost you $150 or so, not $200 or $300. And you can connect the BD player via analog and let the player decode the lossless (not looseless) formats.

Re: J.J. Abrams Star Trek Due Out Nov. 17th!

I bought this for $18 at Future Shop - $8 less than the advertised price on Amazon - so I'm happy. The special DVD was $8 more, but appeared to just be extra cut scenes and making of bits that I will never have time to watch.

I wish threads would stop devolving into DVD vs BR debates - neither side can win, really, so everyone just gets frustrated or has their threads spoiled.

i always thought that you needed a more modern surround sound system to have lossless audio come through your system

Not necessarily. If your receiver has analog inputs and your Blu-ray player has built-in decoders, you're good to go.

I have an Onkyo receiver that's a few years old that can't decode the lossless formats. I love the receiver and currently have no great desire to replace it. My Oppo Blu-ray player can decode DTS-MA and Dolby True-HD internally, so I have it connected to my receiver via analog cables. It sounds fantastic.

Sure, somewhere down the road I'll upgrade my Onkyo to a receiver with HDMI capabilities just for convenience's sake. In the meantime, I'm enjoying Blu-ray, including the lossless audio tracks.

Re: J.J. Abrams Star Trek Due Out Nov. 17th!

Preordered the Blu-Ray for this at Amazon along with The Hangover and Terminator Salvation which enabled me to get free shipping.

Initially the price was $21.49 when I placed the order, then it dropped to $20.99 when it shipped and that is what Amazon charged me. Got it yesterday (Only took 1 day to ship from Nevada to California) and looks like a phenominal set.

Then today the price dropped to $19.99 and Amazon sent me another e-mail crediting me the Dollar.

Love Amazon.com!!

Question, when I visited Target yesterday, I checked out the Enterprise 2-disc DVD and it says there is 90 minutes of bonus material. When I looked at my Blu-Ray, it says there is over 3 hours of material.

Does anyone know what is not on the DVD's? Just curious.

I can't tell from that. There are some unused connections on the other side of the mass of cables, but I can't tell what they are. If you can post a model number for your receiver I can find out for you whether it was the inputs you need.

As far as HDMI on your TV is concerned, if you're really out of them you can get an HDMI switcher for not much money that would allow you to connect multiple sources through one input on your TV.

Yes there is much more extra content on the blu. Which is really crappy of paramount and the primary reason for my dilemma.

Re: J.J. Abrams Star Trek Due Out Nov. 17th!

I know this is off-topic, but what did you guys think of the movie?

I blind purchased the DVD - hadn't even seen a trailer, just heard the movie was great - and finally got to watch it last night.

I have a few minor complaints with the ways characters were changed, but all in all this was a good movie, and I am already looking forward to the next one. This movie never could have been done as a TV show, but I wish it had been, as we likely have to wait quite a while longer for the sequel.

I like the new cast, and the new ship design is cool too. Replacing phasers with laser blasts was a good choice, and having ships shoot it out with more than one energy or torpedo weapon makes a lot more sense.

Spock is the one thing I can't adjust too, and having Nimoy on screen to highlight the differences didn't help either. The new guy is just too much of a tool, and made mistakes required for the plot but not keeping with the character, but hopefully that will be improved in the next movie.

All in all a great movie; it join Iron Man and Dark Knight as one of the rare new releases I will be re-watching for years to come.

So - anyone else seeing this for the first time?

Re: J.J. Abrams Star Trek Due Out Nov. 17th!

Total blind buy for me.

I'm not a rubber-ears wearing Trekkie by any means, but I did grow up with the original show. So in a way I'm feeling a little resentful that the series I enjoyed now 'never happened'. (I feel the same way about BSG. But thats another thread)
But the way everyones tripped over themselves to praise it, I decided to swallow my pride and give it a look. We'll see.

Oh I know what you mean. Everytime I see the actor I can't shake the feeling that its someone doing a Spock parody in a Saturday Night Live skit. Unfortunately seeing the actor in the leaked blooper reel, he does come off as kind of a 'valley guy' in RL.
And thats another thing that bothers me. Will any of these actors be willing to stick with Trek over the long haul? Or is it just 'A part we decided to take until something better comes along'?

Apparently you need to go back and watch it again, as you're missing the point to their explanation as to why things are different....there is no need to feel resentful, as everything that has previously happened canon-wise still applies to the "original/prime" time line and everything from the original shows and movies DID happen....this new movie, and all events going forward from the time Nero appears in the past creates a new, off-shooting alternate time line.....

Admittedly, the transfer left me a bit underwhelmed considering Paramount did such a great job with the Transformers 2 image. But as far as standard def goes, there's really nothing to complain about. Trek looks very good on DVD. Will definitely upgrade once I get a BD player.

Paramount currently does the best DVDs (and Blurays) at the moment. I suspect that had it not been for that stupid 'digital copy', the extra featurettes probably would've been included.

That's what I appreciate about Star Trek - infinite timelines are handled by the science fiction genre, so they can kick off a new one any time they like. If you don't rationalize it that way, then I completely understand any feeling of resentment.

Time travel stories are not my favourite, but since they've been part of the series since the beginning, complete with alternates crossing over (Evil Kirk etc), I've gotten used to them.

In a way, I appreciated the effort they put in to justifying the changes, and doing so as part of the main plot. Respect was paid to the audience and the material - this wasn't a brash upstart telling the world how it should have been done the first time, as we see in so many badly-done reboots.

They just have to fix Spock ... it'll be hard to see him as the genius he was when he argues silly positions like he did in the first movie.

Actually I haven't seen it yet. Just going by little snippets of info I've heard. But as you said, we'll see. I may change my tune once I watch the disk.

Kinda like after seeing the Enterprise dvd case, I've decided the new Enterprise design isn't so bad after all.

When you watch it, you'll probably appreciate how it was done. I didn't even clue in to the time travel part until well into the movie.

If you don't think that every lead actor here has a multi-film agreement in their contract, you're a crazy person. Also, I'm sure they HATE being paid millions to star as characters known the world over in one of the most high-profile, financially and critically successful franchise reboots in recent history. Let me know when "something better" comes along compared to that.

Not to stereotype, but he's not exactly a fan of the ladies, if you catch my drift.

It happens. Actors bail out of sweet roles or ask for insane amounts of money because they want to 'expand their horizons', or don't want to be typecast. I'm sure they'll be around for 3-4 movies. But what then?

Quote:

Ahhh gotcha. You're right about sterotypes, but I see what you mean.

And with that I'm gonna hush. I think I'm just pissing folks off.
