Of all the digital copies I have, the only one that I have ever personally redeemed is for The Dark Knight, since I bought the Blu-Ray and I don't have a Blu-Ray player yet.

I'd rather have a DVD, but in this case the digital copy did sway my decision to buy blu for the first time, rather than double dip in the future.

Bonus DVD of course. Hate those Digital Copies and the ugly "Digital Copy" labels on the slipcases/slipcovers.

Kind of difficult to carry my 52" HDTV with me everywhere I go.
I have been using the digital copies and love them. I honestly would never use the extra DVD and would probably just give it away. Having the movie on my iPod Touch is something I would use. I'm definitely down for more of these. The digital copy can also be used on my laptop if I have that with me.

For blu-rays, I'd much rather have a SD copy as a bonus. I can then make my own digital copy for my portable.

The correct answer, of course, is Managed Copy.

That wouldn't help many of us now because we don't have BD drives yet.

BTW, do you know if Managed Copy would have had a way to downconvert the copy for portable use? I know you could make a perfect copy, but it wouldn't be an "open" copy (although I imagine it would get cracked).

I thought that the Managed Copy was supposed to work through the PS3 - it can create a digital copy and transfer it to the PSP with DRM intact (sort of how the PS3 movie store titles can be transferred to the PSP). I think it would be really nice to have, but I don't know how they could "lock it down" unless they go the same route as Digital Copies with unique codes to enter. I was a big fan of UMD Movies (and I'm probably the only one!) so I'd love to see the option to transfer to a PSP.

I'm also really enjoying Digital Copies and I do consider it a selling point. For the topic title - I think most would probably prefer a DVD, but I don't think the studios are doing this as a "favor" for us, rather using it as a way to get us used to the idea of digital downloads so we're not afraid to purchase digital copies in the future instead of DVDs. If they were to give away a DVD copy with each Blu Ray, I could guarantee it would hurt sales as people would give away (or sell) the DVD.

Well, they obviously couldn't copy the movie as it is on the disc, because it would be insanely huge, and the PSP probably doesn't have the horsepower to decode it. Managed Copy would not have been limited to the PS3. There was talk about HD DVD getting it as well.

There would need to be a system where the movie is downconverted to a format the PSP can handle. The way I understood it, Managed Copy was going to allow you to make a perfect, authorized copy of the disc to a media server. I don't know if it also had a feature to allow you to create a portable version.

Re: would you rather: bonus digital copy or bonus Blu/DVD?

I finally downloaded a digital copy just to see what it was like. I don't think I even have many but I grabbed Mamma Mia just to try it and see how it works. The process was pretty painless and because it's music I can leave it playing in the background, but I would still prefer an SD bonus disc. I don't have an iPod and anything like a PC or laptop I'd be able to play it through the DVD drive.

Upon further review an SD would be much nicer. Digital copies do not have chapter stops and in the case of musicals or concerts chapters would be most helpful.

I'd take the bonus digital copy.

I didn't think that they did at first until I noticed them on my iPod. The Digital Copies (at least itunes versions) have chapter stops (and when played in itunes, even include timecodes and an image from the chapter):

To get to it, move the mouse over the picture (so the play, pause, next, prev. buttons appear, and select the icon that looks like a book)

Bonus Disc for me!!!! I can't stand the digital copies at least with a Bonus Disc it wouldn't be as useless because eventually if you switch to blu-ray then you'll get to use it.

Re: would you rather: bonus digital copy or bonus Blu/DVD?

Just picked up South Park Season 12. Comes with a download for a "digital copy". The catch? Won't play on a PSP or iPod.

Uh... where/how else would one play a digital copy!??!?!

Re: would you rather: bonus digital copy or bonus Blu/DVD?

If I was buying a Blu, a SD-DVD would be far more enticing to me than a Digital Copy.

There are many more laptops than both of those devices combined.

And I imagine many more non-ipod video players than PSPs.

Who wants to carry around all their DVDs when you can have dozens on the hard drive? Plus less battery use, which is a huge issue on laptops.
