WB Western Classics Box Set: 8/26/08

Didn't see a thread on this one. Info from dvd times:

"Warner Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of the Warner Home video Western Classics Collection on 26th August 2008. Celebrating the western genre Warner brings 6 titles – each newly remastered for this release – to DVD.. Priced at $59.92 SRP for the collection or available individually at $12.97 SRP each, the only extras are original trailers.

The films…

Escape from Fort Bravo (1954)
Union officer William Holden contends with Confederate prisoners inside Fort Bravo…and fierce Indians outside. John Sturges (The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven) directs.

Many Rivers to Cross (1955)
Trapper and resolute bachelor Bushrod Gentry comes to Kentucky, where a marriage-minded lass is waiting. Robert Taylor and Eleanor Parker team in a comedy/adventure.

Cimarron (1960 remake)
Oklahoma is theirs…if they can tame it. Glenn Ford stars in the decades-spanning tale of the famed land rush and of settlers sinking deep roots. Anthony Mann (Winchester ’73) directs this two-time Oscar® winner.

The Law and Jake Wade (1958)
Lawman William Holden is sworn to uphold the law but destined for a showdown with his
outlaw past when former partner Richard Widmark resurfaces. Directed by John Sturges.

Saddle the Wind (1958)
Blood for blood; brother against brother. An ex-gunslinger’s attempts to go straight meet a fury of violence ignited by his brother. Robert Taylor stars in Rod Serling’s taut tale.

The Stalking Moon (1968)
A suspenseful manhunt saga. A relentless foe tracks Army scout Gregory Peck as he attempts to lead a woman (Eva Marie Saint) once held captive by Apaches to safety."

Looks like a solid set of films. More Mann is always a good thing, although Cimarron is supposed to be one of his lesser works. Cassavetes in a Western sounds interesting.

I am getting more and more into classic westerns like Yellow Sky/Alvarez Kelly. So I might pick this up.

I wish WB had used the original poster art:

There is also a Errol Flynn Western collection coming out on the same day.
Includes: Virginia City, San Antonio, Rocky Mountain, and Montanna.

I have not seen any of these, but if they are sold seperately I might try out Rocky Mountain

Virginia City is worth a buy for the cast alone. In addition to Flynn, it's got Randolph Scott and Humphrey Bogart in it.

Randolph Scott

Sorry to change the subject but since you brought up Randolph Scott, I was wondering if there were any Randolph Scott Indians vs. Calvary Westerns out on DVD that I could pick up? I think I remember watching a few on tv over the years.

JOE29, I'd bet the Randolph Scott movie you are recalling is 7th Cavalry. It isn't yet available on DVD. TCM actually showed a nice letterboxed print of it just last month I believe; it isn't currently listed for re-airing in the next few months. It had also been shown on Cinemax, or maybe it was Encore Westerns, on and off these last few years...but the broadcasts weren't OAR. Other than 7th Cavalry, I don't really recall any other cavalry vs. Indians type films that he did.

Yes, 7th Calvary rings a bell. Thank you.
I'll have to put that on my wish to be released on DVD list along with Rio Conchos, El Condor and The Battle at Apache Pass

What ever happened to THE HANGING TREE? I thought had been announced by WB some time ago as being in the hopper....

Off-topic I suppose, but perhaps of interest to readers of this thread...if you have access to TCM in the U.S., then you can catch MONTE WALSH (1970) starring Lee Marvin tonight at 8pm (EST). The TCM schedule is indicating a letterboxed print. If you read this too late, it is slated to air again August 18th.

And for the curious, the Hammer horror film THE GORGON (1964) is screening earlier in the day (announced for a DVD release coming later this year I believe).

Apparently there's something of a rights problem; seems Cooper's daughter owns it, and talks are on-going. The French release is dire.

DVD Beaver on Cimarron. I wish these films had commentaries, but the transfer seems fine.

Did WB drop the ball on Escape From Fort Bravo? The transfer is really bad. Like VHS bad. What the heck happened? Quality-wise, this is their worst DVD since some of those initial releases in '97....Very disappointing! Can't comment on the others in this set.

Oh boy, I ordered that seperately from the set. Thanks for the warning.

That's rather shocking, considering that WB are usually the best company other than Criterion for R1 catalog releases. Also, JOE29: The quote button makes reading posts far less confusing for other forum members.

Okay, I 'll have to remember that from now on
Also ; Just watched my DVD of Escape from Fort Bravo, very poor transfer as other people have said. Good movie though.
