WARNING: The Universal DVD release of Fearless Director's Cut

I just got my DVD of the Universal release of Fearless (the Ronny Yu movie starring Jet Li).

This release is advertised as a two disc set with the first disc being the Director's Cut of the film. However, my set has both the first and second discs being the exact same thing which is the second DVD and not the Director's Cut. This despite the fact that the first and second discs are clearly identified on the surfaces.

If my brand new copy has this then it must mean it's an error with the DVD manufacturing and there could be a whole batch that is wrong.

All of you who bought this release please report if your set is correct or not.

And does anyone here know of any contact information with Universal in order to let them know this and for them to start a replacement program for those that get stuck with the bad batch? I went to their website and hit the "Contact Us" option, but it took me to a page that said "Not Found".

This release was advertised as including 3 versions of the film. The Director's Cut, The Unrated, and the theatrical. The latter two were featured on one disc that is the exact same one as what Universal released before. The first disc is supposed to house the Director's Cut. The problem here is both discs are the same disc that was released before, in other words what's supposed to be the "second disc". Hence, no Director's Cut. Just a two disc set of the same disc twice.

Does anyone have any contact information for Universal?

Who handles QC for Universal? How does such an obvious omission of the actual reason for this release get by QC?

Great Larry C.! Thanks.

Everyone who has a defected release of this set, please go to the link that Larry provided and fill in the message field explaining your problem and to ask for a recall and replacement program to be started in order to correct this problem ASAP.

Not only should Universal be made aware of this, the pressure needs to be put on (politely of course) in order to get this all straightened out.

did they fix the lousy subtitles problems on the original R1 DVD release?...

there were some pretty serious translation issues on the subtitles of the original R1 DVD, which kept me from buying it...

Subs on the "Unrated" DVD are exactly the same as the previous release. I should point out that strangely enough, the French and Spanish subs were based on the subtitle script that translates the Mandarin dialog, whereas the English subs were dubtitles. Interesting how that occurred.

This shouldn't be a problem with the Director's Cut disc, however since there is no Director's Cut discs apparently on any of the sets I can't tell you.

I just got a reply from Universal after sending them an email about the problem. This is what it said:

Thank you for contacting Universal Studios Home Entertainment. We strive to provide the highest standard in product quality and customer care.

Please let us know your shipping address and daytime telephone number, and we will send you a postage paid envelope in which to return your "Jet Li's Fearless Director's Cut" disc #1 for replacement. In the envelope, please send the original disc #1 only, along with a copy of this correspondence.

Please allow 1 - 4 weeks to receive your replacement.

We appreciate your patronage and hope that you will continue to enjoy this and future Universal releases.

Sincerely,

Consumer Relations
UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOME ENTERTAINMENT

For anyone that has this problem with their sets, then go to the link Larry C. put up above and fill in the message field explaining your problem in order to ask for a replacement.

Right now that link is not going to anything for whatever reason. But keep trying as hopefully it will soon clear up.

I was hoping the second disc would have a nice version of Peter Weir's "Fearless."

And what the fuck is up with the cover art for the R1 release. Jesus Fearless Christ. It looks like my wannabe Asian neighbor next door with a sword. Sorry, I'm holding out on this release just for the idiotic cover. The R3 cover is much more mature.

Universal's score on this one release:

[x] Fucked up the cover art
[x] The same two discs

Can't wait for the next problem. Then they can release the Trifecta Fearless Fucked-Up Edition.

Hi. Is there a quick way to tell the first disc isn't the director's cut? Is it plainly visible on the menu? I might pick it up in Canada and see if we got the corrected disc..

I just checked my copy and . . .this is a heartbreak. I really wanted to see the scenes with Michelle Yeoh.

Hi. Is there a quick way to tell the first disc isn't the director's cut? Is it plainly visible on the menu?
Well, the obvious way is that the menu is exactly the same as the menu for the "unrated" DVD since the messed up sets have the same disc twice, despite labeling them as different.

Also, the option to watch either the "unrated" or "theatrical" cut after hitting the play option would give it away that it is not the Director's Cut disc. And finally, and obviously, the running time.
