I got a bunch of those older Paramount catalog titles for $3 at a DDD sale a couple years ago... surprised they stayed in print as long as they did.

I don't think (slight) panic at this list is overreaction. With the economy still sluggish despite the Wall Street rally and the growing emphasis on on-demand downloading, studios are cutting back on production and inventory, especially a notoriously cheap studio like Paramount. Just as many titles never made the transition from VHS to DVD, I doubt that we'll see many of these titles on BR.

The Warner print-on-demand monopoly is the wave of the future, I'm afraid.

Buckaroo Banzai was never out of print. It was released in the "Astronomy 101" box set along with Spaceballs and Killer Klowns From Outer Space (which I got when Amazon had it for 10.99). MGM just held back stock on the individual disc for a while to encourage people to buy the set.

Many of the above Paramount titles (as well as the Warner titles from last week) are available in either box sets or double/triple features.

You just have to know how to look for things.

Here's my prediction for the future of classic catalog films on home video:
- The high profile films will all be re-released on Blu-Ray eventually. Knowing Warner, expect them all to be anniversary releases. Perhaps Citizen Kane in 2011 and the like.
- The decent selling films will likely continue on pressed DVD in some form, i.e. re-issued or bundled with similar films in multipacks and such.
- The lesser films that did not sell as expected/poorly when around in pressed form will either go out of print or go into a some burn on demand service a la Warner Archive.

Thanks for the tip on Buckaroo Banzai. I did know about the other set, I just wasn't interested in the other two titles. I wanted a stand alone. One of my little idiosyncrasies about my collection. I would have gotten that set if I wanted all three. Still, it is good info.

Amazon lists Pretty Baby as "Usually ships in 11 to 13 days" (as of this post). This is the best indicator. If it takes more than a few days, it is "out of print". You should be able to find it easily for a few months, then as supply dries up, the prices will go up. In the meantime, it may or may not be reissued. Also, I've seen long out of print titles suddenly reappear without warning (Funeral in Berlin: out of print, then in print, now out of print again). The used DVD market is about as volatile as the stock market.

I checked MMM, ad there are an additional four WB titles on my wishlist that, unbeknownst to me, had also been discontinued at some point. I don't see any of them coming to Blu-ray any time soon. I'm not sure if I should wait for the DD sale, or order them now at $14.03 each. Will they likely still be in stock in a month or two, or whenever the sale is? With the summer sale in July this year, I'm figuring the winter one will be pushed back to December.

Amazon is not always an indicator of whether something is available or not. I've seen occasionally where they say there is limited availability and then other sites continue to have it indefinitely. However I dont know what the case is with this particular title.

It was an "import" release by Paradox and now that the Criterion version is coming out, they have to stop distributing it in Region 1.
