Not sure if it's "allowed" here, but have you guys considered bootleg versions of the show? Either d/ling eps online and making your own DVD's, or buying them from a site with custom made cover art, etc? You'd get syndicated eps, and lesser picture quality to a degree, but you'd get all original music.

I must be the only person that generally doesn't care about licensed music in a TV show, particularly in shows that OVER use it, such as the recent My Name is Earl. To me, it usually gives off a pungent sign of "trying too hard," such as.. oh look, she's rubbing fish and cheese on herself to disgust Randy when they have sex, let's play "Love Stinks!" I cringe at the person that thought that was actually clever.

The music was really vital to The Wonder Years, though.

I agree. The music needs to be the original music. I don't care if I have to pay extra for it. Much like with Freaks and Geeks, the music really helps to add to the show. I just hope they work something out soon.

Here are two great examples of just how important the music is to The Wonder Years:

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UV8dW_TU1d4"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UV8dW_TU1d4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Z7aq6EFq_38"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Z7aq6EFq_38" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

It just wouldn't be the same if they replaced this sort of stuff with generic instrumental music, or even with other songs.

Well at this point, it looks like our choices are replaced music, no DVDs, or MSRP of $119.95, which won't happen because 80% of people won't buy it.

Wish they'd follow the video game market and release two SKUs if that's the only way we'd get original music.

Whatever measure necessary should be taken to preserve the music on this show. I haven't seen every episode, but what I've seen is enough to know that the music is virtually a supporting character on the show. Of course, that didn't matter with WKRP, but we can hope...

I agree completely with the second example. It just wouldn't be the same without Seger's "We've Got Tonight".
Another one I think of often, and have seen in a much less effective bastardized version, is a tremendously poignant scene from the episode in which he graduates fron junior high. Just before he is picked up by an imminently expecting Mrs. White, he walks past a school playground. As he has visions of himself, Winnie, and Paul playing there as small children, Randy Newman's wrenching "I Think it's Going to Rain Today" plays. It's possibly my favourite scene from the entire series, and much of its impact depends on the music.

Maybe someone can post a video of it. I don't know how.

Thanks Brent L, that's the proper version. I'm pretty hard, but that depiction of the sad side of memory - such as the moment one realizes one is no longer a kid - is almost a tear-jerker.

Another great one that just occurred to me, where the music is essential, is the end of the episode in which Mr. Collins dies. "Goodbye, My Friend" (don't know the musician) plays over photos of the deceased math teacher.

I would pay a higher price for the original music. Make it available only on the net to save money. I don't care. Just give me all of the damn seasons with music intact soon.

After watching some reruns of this, I would probably buy it for $100/season. I mean, that's what TNG was going for when it came out.

Can we please change the thread title? I get excited every time I see this thread until I remember that there's actually no new news about this.

it's the 'depth of field', or lack thereof, that really makes it look like video to me. i don't see how speeding it up would affect the way i perceive that.

Actually, what I want is a music*less* version.

Then I can just play the damn proper song at the correct time on my cd player, etc.

I did actually buy a bootleg set of the show. The picture quality, as to be expected, is sub-par, but I at least have it.

And with that said, I would buy the show if ever legitimately released. Even if it was $119.99 a season, if it meant all the original music was on there.
