Collecting Hammer Horror
#26
Borders has the Anchor Bay 2-pack of Satanic Rites and Dracula Prince of Darkness and also the single disc Anchor Bay of Satanic Rites of Dracula. Isn't the single release really hard to find? Both are on order, but are still in print. I'm thinking about ordering it.

While SCARS OF DRACULA is not top-shelf Hammer, the Anchor Bay release has a supplemental disc of Christopher Lee music videos (!) and a great interview which ends with a sincere and heartfelt tribute to his friends Peter Cushing and Vincent Price. That disc alone is worth searching out.

I have a question that hopefully you Hammer experts can answer
According to this link Elite had the Laserdisc rights to the following Hammer movies.
Dracula - Prince of Darkness
Plague of Zombies
Rasputin the Mad Monk
The Reptile
The Witches
Frankenstein Created Woman
Quatermass and the Pit
The Mummy's Shroud
The Vengence of She
The Devil Rides Out
The Lost Continent
Slave Girls
I've been collecting them for fun and have all but the ones in bold. I can't for the life of me figure out whether these two actually were released by Elite. I've been looking on Ebay for months and they haven't shown up and the LDDB database doesn't list them either. Does anyone know if Elite actually ever released these two?

They aren't in print you know. If they haven't got 'em, it's unlikely they'll be fulfilling backorders.
These two are the hardest to find of the AB Hammers.
Quite a lot of places have stock of some of the other doubles (such as Franeknstein Created Woman/Golden Vampires).
The rights have gone to Blue Underground, who have "no plans" to reissue them.
Some of them were released in r2 UK, from Warner, and they've just gone OOP as well, the rights from Studio Canal have lapsed.
Still hoping for a decent r2 of Satanic Rites!

I haven't had time to watch all of the Hammer Dracula films, but Horror of Dracula (the first entry in the series) is quite good. Scars of Dracula is relatively abysmal, but like someone else said, the DVD is worth it for the extras alone.
I have Vampire Circus, Twins of Evil and Countess Dracula on R2 DVD with nice anamorphic transfers (they were released a few years ago as a box set). Vampire Circus is very entertaining in spite of some cheesy effects.

I'm wondering if WB is gonna release another Hammer horror dbl feature ala Curse of Frankenstein/Taste-Dracula. Anyone know?

Taste the Blood of Dracula - 5
Scars of Dracula - 5
Dracula AD 72 - 4 if you want to take it seriously, 8 if you like cheese
Satanic Rites of Dracula - 6.5 (sort of Avengers meets Dracula, more interesting than good)

AFAIK you can still get them in R4 though.

Progressive transfers aren't really a factor for those of us in PAL territories, but your point is well taken, especially as HD sets will be less tolerant of incorrectly-flagged transfers. If there are any discs with particular transfer issues, I'd be happy to add the information to the Guide.

Hammer
What really sucks is that three of my favorite Hammer films VAMPIRE CIRCUS, HANDS OF THE RIPPER and TWINS OF EVIL, can never come out on DVD due to Sony buying up the MGM library. All reports show that Sony has absolutely no interest in releasing these, so unless they license them to another company, we'll never see 'em on DVD here.

I know this is probably never going to happen, but I would like to see someone acquire the license to a lot of Hammer Horror titles and start releasing them in box sets.

I bought it and love it. Have to be region free, though - which isn't a big deal considering you can get an R0 player for $50 these days.

Does anyone know how the transfers in that Australian boxset compare to these:
