Question About East of Eden DVD
I have recently watched East of Eden on DVD but I was shocked that when I set my player to Dolby Digital the sound was messed up and full of hiss. One character's voice is loud when another's was low. But when I set my player to stereo, the sound was normal again. Is this a problem with the DVD or my player? I set the language to English Dolby Digital 5.1 and it doesn't work in Dolby Digital? What is going on here?

You wouldn't change settings on your DVD player, you'd change them on your surround sound receiver.
I'm beginning to suspect we won't be able to really help you until us more about your setup. What DVD player and receiver do you have, and how is your player connected to your receiver?

Be more specific. Define "home theater system," and most important, how your DVD player's audio output is connected to it. Optical or coaxial digital, or analog?

I have no idea what you're talking about. My player is set surround sound and it's in that that the DVD doesn't sound right. When I switched to only the left and right speakers, the sound was right. Is it the DVD's problem or my player's????

Is your DVD player separate from your surround sound system, or is it all one unit, like a "home-theater-in-a-box"?

I'd add...do other DVDs sound fine in 5.1?
If the OP didn't understand coax or optical, it could be that it is hooked up wrong. (RCA connections can only do Dolby 2.0 I think) But if other DVDs work in true 5.1, then that idea is out.
Back to East of Eden...I watched the majority of the rest and it was fine.
If there is no error on the East of Eden DVD, this may get more response in the Home Theater forum.

The problem is either you have your DVD player hooked up wrong, or you're using an incorrect setting in the disc's or player's menus.
I've tried to help, but you can't or won't provide the information I or anyone else needs to actually help you. If you want to look at my post above and provide the details I asked for, great. Otherwise, I'm done with this thread.

it's coaxial. I have six speakers making the surround system. When I set the player to outout the sound in all six speakers it gets weird. But when I set it to only two players, the left and right, the sound is right again.

Charlie, If you provide the make and model of your Receiver, Dolby Digital, Pro Logic, Pro Logic 2, and how your speakers are connected to your Receiver, as well as how the Receiver is connected to your DVD player AND what the audio option you've set the DVD to in the DVD option Menu, I think some of us might be able to help.
