whats the best version of His Girl Friday?

I recently saw His Girl Friday in a film course and absolutely loved it. I did a pricesearch for it and found there were about 8 different releases of it (i thought double-dipping was bad for films today!). Which version is the best?

The Columbia-TriStar version is pretty much universally agreed to be the best...and most expensive version... of His Girl Friday out in R1. The best way to get this one is through Columbia House (it's available as an enrollment title); otherwise, it's going to cost you around $20. Vidcaps available at the link below:

This is a public domain movie. Columbia was the original releasing studio. In some cases, if there is another production company involved, they can be the party responsible for renewing the copyright; this is what I understand happened with Penny Serenade, another public domain title, which was released through Columbia but produced by George Stevens's company. Stevens's company failed to renew the copyright in 1969 or whenever and the movie is now PD.

Does anyone know the story of why His Girl Friday is in the public domain?
