John Carpenter's The Thing: both versions anamorphic?
hi, i recently bought the new version of The Thing dvd since it had an all new anamorphic remastered picture. i've always heard that the original dvd was not anamorphic but recently discovered that on the original dvd (printed on the disc) it says anamorphic. so the new version is pretty much the exact same thing? anyone care to shed some insight on this?

There was a very interesting thread here (I thought so anyway) that compares the two DVD versions- http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...=carpenter%27s

I just checked my 1998 release of THE THING (which I've kept due to the isolated music score) and neither the packaging nor the disc itself features the term "anamorphic", so I'm not sure where everyone's confusion is coming from...

It's an error.....on the second release, or pressing, or whatever. The first disc I bought, which was over 5 years ago, says on the disc itself....widescreen. The JC collection box edition, which includes 3 other films....says anamorphic on the disc. Like djtoell said, no matter which one you want to look at, it's NOT anamorphic. Thanks to the triple-dip I had to take, now I have the anny.
So really, there are 3 versions.
Now you know.

In any case I doubt we'll see this released again until it's in an HD format.

I have the original version (paid way too much for it, back when Universal discs were so expensive ) and am passing up on the current release. My old one is good enough until the HD one comes out.
