I second the recommendation for Run Lola Run. I also enjoyed the recently released Goodbye, Lenin! which should be easy to find. Das Boot is also a classic, as is Wings of Desire. I also enjoyed Europa, Europa.

Viel Glück!

Bridge, The ( Brücke, Die ) (1959)

Link?
I thought this was only available through Belle & Blade video (for big bucks, I might add).
I just checked DDD's website for this under "Bridge", "The Bridge" and a few alternate spellings of it's German title and found nothing. I even did an advanced search by decade and genre and it didn't show up.

Don't buy Das Boot then. The world's cinema is Americanised because cinema is usually whatever the most people will accept (ie dumb). That's not bad or good it is just how it is.

If you want something edgy then try Der Totmacher (called The Deathmaker on Anchor Bay).

If you are learning German you should try and watch all types of German cinema/TV because you will pick up new intonation and slang. The making of any good student.

I loved The Princess and The Warrior (Der Krieger und die Kaiserin translated more like the emperor and the empress perhaps) and highly recommend it.

I second:

Run Lola Run, Princess & The Warrior, The Experiment

...also, Anatomy is a good one as well and can be found for $5.50 in the Walmart bin.

I don't know if Netflix offers Criterions, but I highly recommend The Marriage of Maria Braun and The Tin Drum.

Well, not necessarily a "good" movie .... but you might have some fun with KILLER CONDOMS which is a German-language movie set in New York. It's a Troma release, which should give you some indication of what it's like.

Oops... My bad. DDD used to carry it (sorry, I should've checked). Belle & Blade have it listed @ $30 + shipping.

Amazon has it listed for $45.

Let us not forget Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre, the Wrath of God. or anything by Fassbinder.

The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (Criterion) - one of Fritz Lang's finest films in a beautiful DVD presentation.

Would? Is? Why?

Because I said it is. Tell my why you think it isn't an Americanised TV show (massively cut down and turned into a 'cinema film') and I'll try to reply.
