King of the Hill Season 3 packaging change...for the worst

Got home with Season 3 of King of the Hill and opened it up...they have gone to double sided disc. Three dvds that are double sided.

good news is the MSRP is 39.99

season one was 3 one sided disc the MSRP is 39.99
season two was 4 one sided disc the MSRP is 49.99
season three is 3 double sided disc the MSRP is 39.99

not a deal breaker, just a bad ided

They also used double-sided discs for Reba season 1, which only had 22 episodes and could easily have fit on 3 sides (KotH season 3 is 25 episodes).

At least KotH season 3 seems to be selling better at amazon.com than season 2 did, which is a hopeful sign. The reason for the lack of extras on the new set is that the second season sold poorly and Fox didn't want to release season 3 (between the poor sales and the high-ish music licensing costs for some of the songs in season 3). Finally they agreed to release it bare-bones, at a lower price, and see if they could make money on that. Hopefully they will make money and we'll get the other seasons, but even that won't make up for the fact that KotH has been very badly marketed on DVD. (They apparently thought that KotH's audience would be the same as Futurama and -- ycch -- Family Guy, and it just isn't the same audience. Plus they said nothing in the promotions about KotH being from the creator of Office Space, thus doing nothing to tie it in with Fox's biggest DVD hit.)

Yeah, I was very disappointed to see this change. But, no loose discs, and no scratches on them. So, that's a plus.

Whoops, I didn't even read all of that, heh. They BETTER release all of the seasons, they just better. If they are all bare, I'll be ok with that as long as I at least get to own all of them.

That said, I want my extras.

If Fox stops releasing them, I'll be pissed as hell.

I picked up MadTV Season 1 today, and it is on 3 double-sided discs. Of course there are 19 1 hr. shows, so I guess it was either that or 6 discs, and 3 is more cost-effective, I believe.

I'm hopeful about future seasons. Season 3 seems to be selling much better at Amazon than season 2 did.

If you want some good news, all the songs in season 3 -- and there were, surprisingly, quite a lot of episodes that used pop songs in some way -- are intact. So at least Fox got that right: "Life in a Northern Town," Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride," Hank Williams, "Takin' Care of Business," "Free Falling," the Dallas Cowboys fight song, "Love Hurts" and many others are all there.

If memory serves me correctly, most seasons didn't have as much original music as Season Three did, so maybe the remaining sets will be easier for Fox to release. Even if music clearances are an issue, I hope they will just cut the songs in question if they're deal breakers.

I'd rather have extras than the original music. I mean syndicated episodes are cut as it is. I'd rather have the full length episodes with extras than ones with mostly crappy music left in tact.

These music companies need to stop holding these DVD's for ransom. The only way to do that is to support the DVD producers and purchase the DVD's you want regardless of the music. Look at what happened with Married With Children, Season 3 was held up for nearly a year because of the theme song! It's stupid. I can't wait to hear that new theme song next month, because it's 1000 times better than having to pay more to get something I already have on 2 Season sets and a compilation disc.

If it ever comes down to music vs. extras...I'll take extras everytime.

I'm fine with it. I'd rather have the low price point anyway.

I just read the review here and it says episodes are presented in airdate order, when they should be in production order. Anyone have that order handy?

The correct order (if you want to see Luanne's hair growing back as intended, etc) would be:

Death of a Propane Salesman
And They Call It Bobby Love
Peggy's Headache
Pregnant Paws
To Spank With Love
Good Hill Hunting
Next of Shin
Jon Vitti Presents: Return To La Grunta
Peggy's Pageant Fever
Nine Pretty Darn Angry Men
The Wedding of Bobby Hill
Pretty, Pretty Dresses
A Firefighting We Will Go
Three Coaches and a Bobby
Love Hurts and So Does Art
De-Kahn-Structing Henry
Sleight of Hank
Escape From Party Island
Dog Dale Afternoon
Hank's Cowboy Movie
Revenge of the Lutefisk
Death and Texas
Wings of the Dope
Take Me Out of the Ball Game
As Old as the Hills

They just chose to go with original airdate rather than production order. I think it was a mistake, as far as continuity is concerned, but it was their choice.
