Simpsons comes to mind. I bought the box set, but barely watched any of it. That series was so much better by season 2 and on that I have a hard time watching that first season.

I think it's silly to buy just certain seasons. If I like a series, I'm going to want every episode, regardless of how bad they may be.
If for no other reason, it would be to see how a series progressed (or regressed) over the years.
Then again, I own Superman IV, Smokey And The Bandit III, Robocop III, and Speed 2.

Yeah - I don't understand that mentality either particularly when most television series have a JTS point.

The shows I buy, I'll always start with the first season. Most I continue on consecutively until I lose interest for whatever reason. I loved Oz S1, hated Oz S2, so I stopped there. I liked the West Wing S1 but not enough to want to see any more of it, so that's probably the end of that. Buffy and Angel I'll stick with through the end. Plan to go with S3 of Alias, though I've heard some bad things about it. I was ready to stop with the Sopranos after S3, mostly because I was sick of the exhorbitant pricing, but I ended up winning S4 in a giveaway over at DVD Town. Not sure if I'll go with S5.
Watching La Femme Nikita S1 right now, just finished the fourth episode. Man, that sucker is much better than I thought it would be. But I got it for $5 from Columbia House. Don't know if I'll pay full price for S2 whenever it reappears.

Probably my favorite show, and I own seasons 2-6, and will buy S7. But I hated S1, and can't imagine I'll ever own it, unless I receive it as a gift or something.

I found S2 and S3 of West Wing to be better than the 1st.

I'm half-way through the 1st season of The Kids in the Hall and so far only about half the sketches are making me grin. No real belly laughs yet. I never saw the 1st season, but I loved the later seasons (5 in all). I figure that at $25 a pop, it's not too much to be a completist.
For The Simpsons, I plan to stop after season 7, with the resolution of the Who Shot Mr. Burns cliffhanger. I am a completist, but not when there are 15-20 seasons and the last 5 have sucked.

I will probably skip Simpsons Season 1 and maybe 2 and 3, 4 is where it starts to hold it's own IMHO.
As for series that have "very different" first seasons, Lexx Season 1 would be one you could just not miss, or the other seasons just dont make sense.
Oh yeah, hi everyone (think this is my first post)

I wish they'd release a Best of Seinfeld before the season sets, but I don't think that's gonna happen. The first season was not that funny.

I would skip the first season set of I Dream of Jeannie, even though I love the show. Reason being, the black-and-white first season seemed like they still didn't know what the show was supposed to be - and they had one episode where Roger Healy stole the lamp and became Jeannie's master. The problem with all this was, Roger made some terrible decisions and, in the end, wished to Jeannie that he could go back and undo the mess he was in. In a blink, everything was back to the way it was, with Tony Nelson as Master.
Now, if it was as simple as that to get out of the troubles Tony and Roger got into, where's the stress and tension coming from in the later seasons? So I'd skip Season One for that reason.

Star Trek: The Next Generation. Seasons one and two were very poor. I have Seasons 3 through 7, but couldn't bear to sit through 1&2 again.

I own the first season of Buffy but I'm having problems, it's a really bad season. I like seasosn 2, 3, and 4 (and I own 5) I'm trying to figure out if I should sell seasons 1 and 5 or keep just season 5 and sell the first. If I owned seasons 1-5 it would be a sort of complete tv show set (seasons 6 and 7 do not count) Also, I don't own the first season of the simpsons but I guess that's what happens with older shows that have gone on for so long, they've changed so much from where they started off, in fact I started collecting simpsons at season 4 adn I only plan to get seasons 5, 6, 7, and 8.

Eventhough I didn't realy care for season 1 of Buffy I keep it around because a) its the beginning of the show and B) NIghtmares, Angel, & Prophecy Girl are all really good episodes...
Shows that I'll skip seaons on are a) Smallville (no season 3) and b) survivor (I'll buy 2,3,and 8)
