My guess is that it's one of those marketing schemes. Miyazaki's HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE comes out in Japan in November, followed by the eventual Disney release in the States.

"Hey kids, you liked HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE? Well check out these 3 titles from Disney DVD!"

You mean smart marketing? Hey, imagine if a large number of kids/adults discover Miyazaki films as a result of this move, as opposed to his works being largely known only to film geeks and anime freaks in the US. That, of course, would get the hardcore nerds in an uproar, as the general public doesn't have the sophisticated tastes in animation and are really just posers. Haha, nerds.

Gibberish.

I plan to buy ONE product from Disney all year and they can't even get it out on time? Argh.

Pot calling kettle black on an internet site for talking about DVDs and all the obsessiveness that entails with collecting them.

Now that Pixar's a free agent, I can't see Disney using Lasseter for anything like this. The paranoid side of me bets that Disney will do a silent re-release of the earlier Miyazaki films without the Lasseter bits sometime in the future.

Unless, of course, Disney hires Lasseter away from Pixar. Then they'll milk him for all he's worth!

Anyway, count me among the really disappointed. At least these releases are not in an Ed-Wood-style limbo at the moment (although they're awfully close -- 2005 is almost as vague as you can get).

I don't care if they are delayed, as long as the release is done properly. The last thing I would want to see is a poor dvd because some deadline had to be met

Unfortunately, I'm betting on late AND improperly done. They had all the time in the world for the 1st wave, and they screwed up Kiki's sound FX and Laputa's subtitles...

Hmm... I didn't think about Pixar and Disney splitting off affecting the rest of the Miyazaki releases. Man, we might be hosed!!!!!!!

I spoke with Buena Vista about the delay. Apparently they feel there would be some confusion in the marketplace since there are still plenty of copies of the Fox version of Totoro on the shelves (Gee, I wonder why?). They feel it isn't wise to bring it out at a $30 SRP when the Fox version has a $10 SRP and is widely available. Yes, we all know the Fox version blows, but this is the Joe Sixpack crowd we're talking about here. So, they've just postponed these until early next year. They're hoping that most of the old copies will be pretty much gone from store shelves by then.

crappy reason - they're delaying ALL of them for this? and anyway, anyone who wants the $30 totoro probably knows what they are getting.

Well if JSP hasn't bought it yet, I don't think he is waiting around for the Japanese language version to be released.
Jim Bob-"Hey Billy Bob, come on over. I finally got the Japanese language version of Totoro."
Billy Bob-"Great. What beer goes with that?"

*Apologies in advance to any posters at DVDTalk with the names Jim or Billy Bob.

Also there are plenty of DVD titles out there with a cheaper bare bones version along with a more expensive Special Edition. What makes Totoro any different......?

Strangely, about two weeks ago, VHS screeners for all of these movies were shipped to video stores. And the store hadn't been told about the delay.
