FOOD OF THE GODS and Spaghetti Westerns on DVD in Japan Only

All Cinema in Japan has released FOOD OF THE GODS, RETURN OF SABATA, ADIOS SABATA and NAVAJO JOE (Burt Reynolds) in Japan through a deal with MGM. I emailed them about purchasing the titles, but they nicely replied "By the agreement between we and MGM,
we can only sell the product to the people in Japan and
are prohibited to export the products out of Japanese territory."

Ok, I want these films on DVD, so why hasn't MGM released them here? Any plans to? These are American films and/or films with American actors. These Japanese-only DVD releases are also OAR and 16x9.

Wow, Food of the Gods, now that is a movie I have not heard mention of in a very, very long time. I also seem to remember a movie that came out around the same time where all the animals on earth started to go crazy and attack people. Anyone remember what that movie was?

The movie you are thinking about is called DAY OF THE ANIMALS, and I believe it was out on DVD (horribly panned & scanned) from a budget company.

...more on Food Of The Gods... and on Gnaw - Food Of The Gods II...

NOTE: I'm not thread-crapping at all! I'm actually providing a public service for those people who might think they want these movies, and then be angry or disappointed to discover that they were utter, but really utter crap... lovers of these movies excepted, of course!

NAVAJO JOE is actually very good and the Sabata films have a large following. I enjoy FOOD OF THE GODS very much, and regardless of what you think, these should be out Region 1 if MGM went through the trouble to do new transfers.

...note: I didn't say a word about (nor against) the Sabata movies... but since you mention them, here's a review I found of Adios Sabato...

Did you happen to notice the price of Food Of The Gods?? It's listed at 5,800 Yen. At today's exchange rate that's approximately $53. Is it really worth THAT MUCH to you??

Return of Sabata - 4,800 Yen = $43.20
Navajo Joe - same!
Adios Sabata - same!

How many copies do you want? I'll pick them up for you, add on postage and a 10% shopping charge (my time is worth $30/hour, so 10% is cheap) and ship them off to you!

if interested then post your e-mail address. I'm not posting mine for the world to see. Or visit my website and e-mail me from the link at the bottom of the page. geocities/com/danwiz47

He he, I never made mention as to the quality of these films, just suddenly hearing it transported me back to when I was a kid. Would I but it? Not even if they were in the $5 bargain bin.

Hopefully, MGM will include "Food of the Gods" in their Midnight Movies releases. I happen to LOVE this cheese fest

I love FOOD OF THE GODS too, and I would pick up the westerns in a heartbeat as well. But I think the original point of the post is to why these are not released in Region 1? There's no reason they shouldn't be.

That certainly is what I meant Alan. I really hope that FOOD OF THE GODS is being primed as a Midnite Movies selection, and the other titles as part of their Western Legends seriies.

It would be perfect for a Midnight Movies release. Too bad it was not on a double feature with "Empire of the Ants" or "Frogs" (more cheese classics).

My favorite line in "FOTG" is when Pamela Franklin tells Marjoe Gortner that she wants to make love to him-----this while being attacked my giant rats

I saw FOOD OF THE GODS at a drive-in with THE DEVIL WITHIN HER, which I now see is turning up on some premium cable channel. Since it was released by AIP as well, maybe it's now owned by MGM. THE DEVIL WITHIN HER is ridiculous fun which would also make a great Midnite Movie DVD.

Navajo Joe - for some odd reason, I've always wanted to see this one. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait a bit longer to see it on DVD.

One should also note that Food of the Gods was also the very FIRST inductee by CineSchlock-O-Rama's Most Wanted.

Maybe they can campaign MGM to get these out in Region 1! I hope the studio has some rare gems in the works for next year. Aside from the "soul cinema" titles next month, there's not much from them that I'm looking forward to.

I'm always emailing MGM with Midnite movies requests but I never get a response. Bummer.
