DVDs that have extras, at times tons, but do NOT list it on the box!
For the past few months, I had been debating picking up 12 Monkeys or not. The reason that I was holding off for so long, is that I could not find any mention of any extras at all on the back of the box. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a 100% "extra whore" or anything, but I didn't want to pick this one up and then have a big SE or something come out. I felt the film deserved it, as I love it that much.
Well I decided to really research it, and at almost every DVD review site I noticed that they gave the DVD high marks, especially in the extras department. I went out and looked for the DVD again, and still only found the same one with no mention of any extras. I bought it anyway at a pawn shop after I found it for only $8. Sure enough it had some great extras on it, and I love the DVD. This brings me to this question...
...what DVDs do you know of that have no mention of any extras at all on the box anywhere? Why would a company do this in the first place?

DVD Talk Limited Edition
LOL, before I even opened this thread, I was thinking of 12 Monkeys.
I think Universal used to do this with a lot of their DVDs. Field of Dreams is another one that comes to mind. The back cover doesn't mention the featurette or audio commentary.

Most of the old Univeral collector's edition's never mentioned the special features. I was amazed when I saw the special features for Psycho, when I thought I paid $29.99 for just the movie.
Another title that comes to mind is Jacob's Ladder. Although Artisan called it a "special edition", there is no mention of the audio commentary, deleted scenes, etc.

Jacob's Ladder.
I held out on this for a couple of months till I read reviews for it. Lo and behold it's pretty packed. I guess it would be silly to sell a special edition that only had a trailer. Still the features oughtta be indicated on the box.

This brings me to my question. Why would someone release a DVD without any of the information on the back? Is this something that they just did when DVDs were "new", not thinking how much of a big deal that extras would become?

Yeah, most DVDs that don't have the features listed came out in the early days (read: years) of DVDs.
K
Edit: The Beatles: A Hard Day's Night is a recent one that does not list the special features on the back. But I think it came with one of those paper ones, like the Buffy sets.

I keep hearing all this surprise about the special features on the early Universal releases... but keep in mind, all the mentioned titles, which don't list special features on the back, are all COLLECTOR'S EDITIONS...
Universal hasn't really just thrown that banner/title around...they only use it on the discs that usually feature a decent amount of extras etc.... even in the early days, they had titles that were just standard (no banner etc.) but always reserved the gold COLLECTOR'S EDITION seal for the quality titles! Anyone who was hesitating, pick these titles up! Many of them are excellent!

I just bought "The Touch" with Michelle Yeoh and there is a commentary track on disc 1 that isn't listed on the box. Can't tell you if the track is in english or not, but since the movie is english i would say the track is.

Univeral Collector's Editions used to have a sticker on them listing the special features....I still have them for Dante's Peak, Apollo 13 (which spells Jim Lovell's name incorrectly), and Psycho.

Dang, I didn't know Gattaca had any special features. I went with the Superbit (which I got for $13.99, not bad), but would have rather had some nice special features. Maybe someone will trade with me...
