Re: Beneath the 12-Mile Reef
I saw this movie when it first came out, and I thought it was terrific. It told an interesting story about an unusual occupation, and the Florida location was a perfect showcase for the new CinemaScope format. Robert Wagner's likeable performance made him an A-list star and Peter Graves was excellent as an early blond villain. The rest of the cast seemed to enjoy themselves, as well.
When I first saw this film as a teenager, I knew nothing about Bernard Herrmann. Today, I can agree with almost everyone that he wrote a superb score for this movie.
For years, I've wanted a decent copy of this movie for my collection, and now Fox has given us a beautiful, almost pristine anamorphic DVD with full stereo sound. I couldn't be happier.
Forget Paul Mavis' nasty review---if you like this film, get yourself a copy.
