Re: "Forget Me Not" Reviews/Discussion - 2012 Horror Challenge: Day 13

Oh, but I thought that I was going to like this one. There’s a moment in most films that hooks me, and I know precisely at that moment that I’m going to like the film. It’s not usually a big plot point, either--the majority of the time, it’s a tiny little inconsequential thing that suddenly gives me the feeling that I’ve got a personal connection with the filmmaker and that I’ll gladly go wherever he or she leads. It happened with Polanski’s Repulsion, it happened with A Tale of Two Sisters, and I thought that it had happened with this film. The moment in question occurs very early in the film, at the big party scene near the beginning. There’s a long involved shot that starts in one room on one teenaged couple, then moves to another room and another couple, and ends up on yet another couple. My thought was that this was a pretty ambitious camera move for a low-budget horror film, so my expectations went up mightily. But my instincts were wrong this time, and the film came crashing back down to earth pretty quickly. For me, there were two main factors that finally killed my interest in the film: an overly-complex script, and a stupid game chant that all the characters knew as children. I wasn’t totally down with the whole “One, two, Freddy’s coming for you” rhyme in A Nightmare on Elm Street, because it seemed a little far-fetched…but the chant in this one was waaaaay unbelievable. “Release the one ignored by heaven”…really? “Forgotten souls erased by time?” No way. Kids just don’t play like that. My final verdict: There’s nothing in Forget Me Not that you won’t forget…and soon.

Re: "Forget Me Not" Reviews/Discussion - 2012 Horror Challenge: Day 13

This was my pick and I was unsure going in. Early on I felt the characters kind of unlikable in the way that most teens are depicted in horror. Soon enough, though, I found myself enjoying the hell out of this film. It's more ambitious than much of the teen horror flicks that I see being released theatrically and I was pleasantly surprised that characters got to develop a bit more. Only tweeners would likely find much scary in the film, but the script is surprisingly thoughtful and inventive. Acting is also pretty solid.

Enjoyed the start of teen scream day, which began with The Final a revenge of the nerds meets torture porn flick that is fast-paced and entertaining, and also streaming on Netflix. It was part of one of those After Dark Horrorfests, which can be hit or miss, but this was a nasty good time and captures the teen zeitgeist pretty well. I recommend both of these if you're looking for something contemporary for this theme night.

Re: "Forget Me Not" Reviews/Discussion - 2012 Horror Challenge: Day 13

I LOVED this movie. I seriously thought it was going to suck so I had low expectations going in, and I admit that when the first person died and the characters didn't seem to remember who he was, I honestly didn't get it at first and even suspected that maybe the filmmakers were really incompetent and didn't remember their own character, but after the second death, I got what was going on and it really held my interest after that. I loved the nasty little ending, too. It's pretty ambitious for a "dead teenager movie" and it tried some original ideas that I really liked. It reminded me a bit of a movie called "Reeker" that I saw a few years ago, where at first it seems like a regular slasher movie with maybe a hint at the supernatural, and then as the movie goes on more is revealed and there's something deeper going on.

I agree with rbrown about the chant, though. I actually burst out laughing when all these kids knew all the words to this 16 paragraph, overly complicated chant that was supposedly part of this favorite childhood game that they all still wanted to play at 18 (and how this huge, important, terrifying event happened to them when they were kids and they all forgot...talk about a plot contrivance...though I suppose you could argue it's more of the supernatural at work making them forget like they forget each person who dies later in the movie).

Glad you liked it. I was pretty surprised it was this good. Really thought the ending was solid and uncompromised. Since heaps of praise are directed toward films like Paranormal Activity, which is relatively simple, I'm happy to see a teen-oriented pic that has loftier ambitions.

Re: "Forget Me Not" Reviews/Discussion - 2012 Horror Challenge: Day 13

Didn't care for this movie. The ghost were tired been there done that a hundred time types. The acting was ok. The story was a little to silly or maybe I couldn't shut my brain down enough to enjoy it. I guess the idea of being erased from time and space by a ghost or magic chant was to much for me. The amount of reality that would have to be changed is staggering. Also didn't care for ghost that had to chase you but also had the ability to pop up any place they like. Why jump into the car when the ghost could have just popped into it. And once I got on this road of nitpick city I couldn't get off.

Also there are no boobs in this movie. A few boobs could have saved this movie for me.

I was surprised by this movie; normally I'm not into this suspend disbelief type of movie but it was entertaining throughout and came along at the right time in the challenge for me. Plus I've seen much worse and it was a nice break from all the torture type horror movies that come out nowadays.

I read on imdb message board how this movie can be interpreted (can't link because I haven't posted 100 posts yet)
As an alegorical lesson. Sandy is symbolic of some young people who leave their true friends behind in order to be popular, even to the point of bullying former friends. In the end, it is Sandy's conscience who is torturing her, in the same disguises her friends were wearing.
I like this theory, kind of makes sense.

It's funny you should mention that because I kept complaining about that, too. who keeps their bra on during a SEX SCENE? Freak. Seriously.

Re: "Forget Me Not" Reviews/Discussion - 2012 Horror Challenge: Day 13

I really wasn't feeling this movie. None of the characters stuck with me at all, although a few times I was struck by their apparent stupidity. Like the people in the movie, I quickly forgot each one shortly after they were killed. I agree with others that it was pretty funny how ridiculously complicated the chant was.

I had a really hard time taking seriously the ghosts that were pursuing the characters. If Marilyn Manson were to create a lavishly cheesy Vegas show, I would expect him to have people made up to look like these ghosts as his backup dancers. They would probably use the same choreography, too. If they weren't backup dancers, they certainly looked to me like they were taken from some music video. Maybe it was meant to be an homage to Thriller. It just didn't work for me.

Re: "Forget Me Not" Reviews/Discussion - 2012 Horror Challenge: Day 13

I agree this was a forgettable film. If anything it worked better as a "slasher" movie than a ghost film since all the murders happened as soon as a character was alone, and even the party college kids vibe is more of a slasher convention. At times it was silly how they would patently take turns venturing off one by one to not come back. Forgetting the dead was a nice twist but it only helped exaggerate the redundant "wonder off alone, die, interlude showing that person was forgotten, next..." repeat cycle.

Although I didn't enjoy Forget Me Not as much as you these are good points. The state of the horror genre must be kind of sad when movies have to be dissected on the basis of being thoughtful but not scary. Maybe parts went over my head but I felt a lot of the potential depth crashed at the end.

I wish there had been more atmosphere or the "ghost" character was unique. Unoriginal as it was the "ghost" was initially curious but seemed to morph at will suggesting a type of omnipotence that hurt tension. This was especially weak when the end reveals the vengeful girl was not even dead.

Sure there was no nudity but the revealing clothing didn't hurt. All together I wish Forget Me Not has been more explicit especially with the "ghost"/horror elements.

I never expect much from modern teen slashers, and it took me a little while to get into this one, but I really enjoyed it. It'd multi-quote and respond to some of the comments, but am not on my computer today.

I seen this before, and enjoyed it on both viewings. I like the twist of everyone forgetting the victims.

Re: "Forget Me Not" Reviews/Discussion - 2012 Horror Challenge: Day 13

I watched this last night and thought it was just so-so. Started interesting but seemed to get a little tedious by the end. Several hot, horny women, R-rated horror movie and no nudity. WTF!

The movie had an ambitious idea but the execution lacked something for me. And the "trying to be Japanese ghost creepy" is kinda old by now. It's been done long before and in much more interesting ways.

Like I said, I thought this was okay but I was definitely ready for it to end, and not because I was scared or disturbed unfortunately.

My rating: **1/2 out of *****
